To those who are just new and wants to mix and master on your own, learn about 'panning'. You're welcome! 💕
mono is usually drums, stereo for 'instruments' like guitar, lead vocals are usually mono as well as keys and lead synths
Another basic decision is whether to record as mono or stereo. I know professional recording engineers who always record single instruments using only one microphone, but most record in stereo at least occasionally. For pop music projects, recording each instrument in mono makes a lot of sense. Using two microphones, with each panned fully left and right, can make an instrument sound too large and dominating. That might be just what you want for a solo act where one person plays piano or guitar and sings. And obviously a classical recording of a solo piano or violin benefits from a full-sounding stereo field. But a trumpet or clarinet overdub on a pop tune is often best recorded in mono, then panned and EQ’d to not interfere with the other instruments.
Yeah there are several techniques when recording instruments that can be used. Always good to have the mix in mind so it makes it fit better like you said.

I think the real question is: When might you want to use mono or stereo tracks/effects in the mix? That is, when might you want to have a stereo sound verses a mono sound in the mix for any particular instrument?
Just depends on the effect you want. Mono reverb, stereo reverb, delays can be mono or stereo as well. It's a preference thing

Hi , very good explanation, but i m still confused. If u record a bunch of mono instruments- trumpet, voice, clarinet, whatever. Now u go to do the mix, together with some stereo piano, guitar. How do u set up the stereo mix for the mono instruments?
So when using waves plugins you use all plugins mono on vocals ( eq, compression, ssl channel, reverb, delay ) ???
And what about synth vst mono or stereo waves plugins??
I use mono when it is a mono effect on a mono track like EQ and compression. Typically you want to do a stereo reverb and delay but you don’t have too, depends on the sound you want.
thanks a bunch i learnt from this video mono on your some of your vocals and some instruments depending on what you want like you can set a mono compression on a vocal and create a bus using a stereo reverb effects it all depending on what you want on your mix thanks for helping me understand better but my advice is mono on your kick drums snare bass even compression should be mono on them then you can add a stereo effects on what ever instrument you want to bring out a stereo sound like the piano when it was switched on a stereo track i could hear but the left the middle and the right range thats why its called mixing. Hey, great video. I've never come across your stuff before but you definitely know what you're talking about. Do you have a video on when to record other types of files like kick drums and bass lines? I'm in that dilemma now. I think mono? I also use a sound module and record via SPDIF. I find I'm always debating whether to record in mono or stereo (for certain things - mostly percussion). Insight?
Thanks. For any sample of synth it just depends on the source. Some kick samples are in mono and others are in stereo. So when using samples I create mono and stereo then drag it to the one that it is. To be safe you could just use stereo tracks. A mono signal on a stereo track is still mono.

Great video. Are the principles of mono vs stereo the same when using line inputs to record? Such as a Stage Piano plugged into an interface and recorded into a DAW. Would it be better to record in stereo and then split the track in the DAW or simply choose between mono & stereo before recording? Thanks
Most line inputs from a digital instrument are stereo. So you would do a stereo track with both line inputs going to it.

I'm having some trouble with my metal mixes sounding a bit 2d.... I want a bigger wider sound, I double track mono guitars left and right with 2 different takes.... I also use ez drummer... Now, would you recommend I make the drums stereo to fill the sound up? Cheers, Ice always done every mono.
Yeah I would spread some of the drums around. Maybe a room mic and pan the cymbals around. Then to get everything wider use a stereo widener. My favorite is inside the bx_masterdesk plugin.

Intermediate learner on pro tools 12.5 just hook up new e600 drum mics some mics are picking up sound some not. Is it in pro tools setting or scarlett.. Thank you for any advice.
It could be either. Make sure the preamps are turned up and the correct channel is selected in pro tools.

It is a mono track that is moving in the stereo field. So the track stays mono but the master fader needs to be stereo so the stereo information (the paning) is heard.

You would bounce as stereo interleaved
So how would you go about putting a stereo reverb on mono vocals because you only have one mic.
reverb can be stereo and is the most common to use. You would put the reverb on a stereo aux and bus the vocals to it to blend.
Great video! Would it be wrong to bounce all my vst to mono? Then use hass effect to spread things when needed? My problem is that i exclusively use vst for all my music elements, so all the vsts are stereo. I bounce all my tracks to stereo and have difficulty creating width and imaging. I thought maybe mono all tracks then pan them how i want, using a delay or something like microshift will re-spread tracks how i want. Hope i made sense sorry if i didn't. What would you advise? If the instruments have stereo info I would do stereo bounce. You can always pan a stereo file to the side or middle if needed later.

I have no audio interface. I use a stereo cable that connects the pedalboard to the PC through the microphone input. When I record on Reaper, the sound is more or less tolerable. The problem is when I try to record a second track, for example lead guitar, while the rhythm plays. The sound of the recording is very distorted, with a horrible quality. This also happens if I turn on the metronome. It seems that the recording is affected when the pc produces sound at the same time. I formatted my pc a little while ago, and it seems to have solved the problem, however, I don't know how the problem came back. On the other hand, if you try to record in FL Studio, the sound is always bad. I don't know if it's any Asio problem. When I say that the sound is bad I refer for example to the sound of certain videos that are on youtube with poor quality where the sound comes out all distorted full of interference. Please I need help.

Thanks. No it's not a big problem it just makes more work in the mix. I just create 2 mono tracks, drop the stereo on that, then delete the one with no signal and keep the one that is the mono signal.

I'm confused, you make it sound like you can't record vocals in stereo with one mic. But you can.. Are the vocals for hit songs recorded in mono or do they use multiple mics?
Stereo is 2 tracks in one so when recording with 2 microphones you get one left and one right for a stereo spread. Mono is 1 microphone. You can have a mono recording look like a stereo recording but it is still just a mono sound unless you added in stereo information.
When you say you can record a stereo track with one mic what do you mean? 1 microphone can only go into 1 track at a time and a stereo track is 2 mono tracks together in one.
Hit songs or recording in a bedroom it is all the same thing. If recording a mono source you would use 1 microphone. But if recording say a choir and you want the stereo sound then you would use 2 microphones for that.
@@RawTechniqueStudios Ohh I see, well I guess I mean when I test my mic on an ordinary stereo channel it sounds stereo, like if I clap on the left side of it I hear a recording of a left-sided clap. But I guess that's not important for vocal recording, I'll do it in mono from now on. Thanks!

My producer buddy says if you pan kick left, snare right , etc you’ll get a purer signal.

I rarely record anymore but never heard of that before. Only time I have listened to music like that is on the old Beatles records when the first started doing stereo. But that was more vocals on one side and other instruments on the other.
Yeah, NOTmixing... he was saying RECORD with the pan knobs at extremes for a better sound.
Then obviously pan as you normally would.

When a stereo track is default it’s panned left and right but a mono is straight. Does it mean the stereo is panned hard left and right meaning far left and speaker, if so shouldn’t it be straight in the middle like mono !?
Stereo is hard left and right and it covers the entire stereo field. If you pan stereo to center then you are listening to it in mono.

I know I’m late but what about when making beats everything is done through the computer no microphones. I keep coming across videos saying mix in mono. So do I buy stereo plugins or mono plugins?
I make all beats inside the computer only and some samples I use are stereo and some are mono. Most plugins you buy have a stereo and mono version that come together so you just buy the plugin once. Mixing in mono is a way to listen not actually mix. Everyone now days are making stereo records. But they will check the mix in mono just incase someone decided to go old school and listen to the song on a mono setup. Also listening in mono can reveal stereo problems like phase cancellation or buildup.

Than i Open a project in Ableton Live
and import the 2 Mono tracks for 2 tracks in Ableton
i assume the 2 tracks together its a Stereo File in ableton right ?

Than if i want export again the 2 tracks in Ableton
but in Multiple mono ?
In Ableton i only see ( Stereo ) or ( Mono )

Why not export as stereo? It would keep all panning as needed. And exporting would be the same across the DAW's
@@RawTechniqueStudios because its for send by via Ethetnet transfer for a Adat Alesis HD24 for LIVE Performance, the ADAT i need both the 2 channels separate, there are 24 inputs and 24 oututs mono in adat, than i send the 2 monos from ADAT to my Mackie Mixer than i work the pan more open or not, this is because i need the multiple mono for adat. thanks for your help

Depends what you are recording or doing in the mix. Mono for single microphone recordings and stereo for 2 microphone recordings.
Bc dude, sometime it hard to do music in stereo? Let alone solo? How could acoustic guitar be in stereo? without some tweaks?
You would use 2 microphones to make acoustic guitar stereo or 1 to make it mono.

I no longer use logic. I have Logic Pro 9 but haven't used it in months. The SAW's I am focusing on are Pro Tools and Studio One 3.

Mono vocals can bus to mono aux inputs or stereo aux inputs. The vocal stays mono but the effect on the aux is either mono or stereo.

It just depends on the effect you are using. Reverb sounds different in stereo than it does in mono .So you have to choose which you prefer for your song.

adding on to this conversation I was curious is there a preferred way to process lead vocals? for example, would you put mono plugins such as eq, compressor, and desser on a lead vocal aux or would they all be stereo plugins?
i used a wave doubler 2 to double track a vocal track(make it a stereo track) in a mix, when the main out was summed into mono i started hearing funny combfiltering sounds and it initially sounded nice in the stereo what can i do to make it sound good if not better in mono help!
Doubler makes it sound stereo by delaying one side more than the other. When you go to mono it will sound weird because you can now notice that delay. Only way around it is to record 2 vocals and use that for a stereo sound.

Yeah all mono and stereo tracks go to a stereo master. The beat is almost always stereo. Very rare a producer makes a beat mono
