  • Drs. Alona Pulde & Matthew Lederman (WeHeal Co-Founders) break down practical ways to combine eastern & western medicine, lifestyle medicine, and nonviolent communication into a holistic approach to improve mental and overall wellness. They take us through their personal evolution toward incorporating self-care, play, and connection into wellness regimens, the importance of checking in with yourself, and what’s not working in the conventional model of primary care. Matthew and Alona explain how to cultivate nonviolent communication to live authentically and benefit your physical health. They also discuss the importance of providing kids with the vocabulary to express their needs and ways to balance your needs with your child’s.

Life balance is probably one of the hardest things to achieve. The key for me is definitely to remember that is an on-going process, in many different arenas. It's easy to get into 'survival mode' and feel stuck. I know that focusing on self-care is what gets me back in balance. Consistency is the key, which is a constant struggle for me.
Just ordered the book through Audible since im going on a road trip next week. Looking forward to listening!

Dr Berg is the best! I had High Blood Pressure, borderline diabetic to the point I started losing my eyesight. And other health issues. Then I found Dr E. Berg. I corrected most of these problems without medication. My BP has been normal since one month after I took his advice. Each improvement has been at a one month interval. It’s very interesting I can feel the moment of that change happens.it’s wonderful.

I was trying to enlist the support of my neighbor a few years ago for our 'backpack child food' program. In discussing the local culture, she said 'but do their parents Still have their cigarettes? and their cellphone?'. I couldn't argue that point. And the backpack free foods to kids aren't nutritious choices. They are often given foods that wouldn't be acceptable at home, for example my daughter's senior dinner for her actual HS graduation ceremony, provided by the PTO was An Uncrustable. That sums it up. I wondered why she was hungry after 6hrs required for rehearsal, etc after having senior dinner at 9PM? Should have sent a box lunch with her for ceremony day! o.m.g. We hit up ihop for anything at 10pm...on a tuesday graduation night. just crazy.

If a person is poor, they're constantly in a state of organismic threat because they're in "survival mode." I don't agree with the theory that the poor typically "come together to support one another," and therefore experience greater well-being than those who aren't poor or are affluent. Of course, participation in a community contributes to a person's health and overall well-being. But if one's primary concerns are: 1) shelter/a real home; and/or 2) sufficient, nutritious food, and one doesn't have one or both of these, one cannot experience much real health and well-being. I am a highly educated person and I became physically disabled in my 50s. Now I am 71, impoverished and have just spent the last 7 months trying to find a safe, decent and affordable rental - I know poverty and "food insufficiency" firsthand. I understand that those who haven't experienced poverty, homelessness and/or food insufficiency first hand usually can't understand the truths of these experiential conditions. At this point, I am suggesting to many people that they read Matthew Desmond's book, "Poverty, By America." Desmond may enlighten some people; he certainly gave me information I didn't already know and hadn't intuited. And, I suggest that those who have never experienced real poverty, homelessness and/or food insufficiency go and talk to the poor, to the disabled and impoverished, to the aging poor, to the homeless, to those in their city/county who are literally suffering from poverty. And do so now. I'd like to hear some "grassroots" experiences that might then become substantive theories about health and well-being, as related to the poor, and the well-off or affluent. Please feel free to comment!

Ladies & gents..here we’ve another EXCELLENT episode about PARENTING & RELATIONSHIPS (even with ourselves).
Said that, I’ve learnt today that I’ve spent a great part of my life living what these good docs call “survival mode” & chronic stress. In fact I’ve put today a name of what I was experiencing & fortunately, overcomed. I thank you a lot for this episode I needed to watch without knowing I needed it so much! You’re a gem💎, Mayim!

I was just talking about the hierarchy of needs and struggling with im doing all these things and I’m getting better but I’m like you Mayim, still on this journey. Wonderful absolutely should not be unattainable. Thank you so much for not only a 2nd drop this week but somehow exactly what I needed today!!

I appreciate that Mayim brought up elitism. We have ideas about "luxury problems" when in fact the internal experience of pain and suffering doesn't discriminate. I think a more valid criticism is unequal access to luxury resources. But that is a false division as well. The ultimate resource is also the most fairly distributed, and that is time, right.
Most of all, at about 20:21 I heard her offering a framing that is an exit ramp off the victim point that is connected to the "drama triangle."* Because, again, our minds are our own and are being renewed every day based on what we give our attention to.
So interesting and liberating. Great talk.

I love the role play part of this episode. I learned so much from it. Mayim you are so brave to put yourself in that space to show us what we don’t know and how hard it is. My kids are older but there is never a bad time to keep trying to do better. You’ve given your kids the safe space to say Mom I feel like your attention is divided with us. So yes they’re expressing a disappointment but they are safe enough to speak up to you. That means you’ve made them feel safe to disagree with you or point out where you are failing short. It hurts to hear but like you said all you can do is try each day to keep trying to do better. I know you know this. I feel the same way and try each day sometimes each minute to do our best in that moment.

I have to admit this was my least favorite episode ever, and it has nothing to do with you Mayim, I adore you; it was all about the guests and their ideas.
For one, I cannot imagine parenting as they suggest and having my nine year old express herself as an adult and for me to say to her "what about MY needs?" Their suggestions did not make me feel good at all or compelled me to even consider them. Many good books have been written on parenting, living healthier, and finding joy. I found myself horrified and saying "no, no, no" at many of their concept. Needless to say I am not buying their book. Not my intention to offend anyone who liked their ideas. Possibly you are more open minded than I am. I am probably a bit old school. Ever since I listened to the podcast I felt bothered, now that it is off my chest, I wish all my fellow listeners a great weekend ❤

    • @robertsmithee1455
      @robertsmithee1455 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

If "what about MY needs?" is expressed as a Demand, you're exactly right - it becomes a weird 'needy' demand that is a burden on a child and erodes the relationship.
There are some wonderful videos featuring Marshall Rosenberg (the creator of NVC) that outline how his engagement via Nonviolent Communication in the child rearing space changes the violence that is intrinsic in so many authoritarian systems. Finding the creative space where expressed needs are all met is a skill that feels oh so 'wrong' to those of us that have been raised in the context of Authoritarian demands/praise/blame/shame.
I feel like it would be helpful if there was a Nonviolent Communication focused episode.

You just nailed it. Why you struggled with this episode. You did not have the experience of being allowed to be seen heard and understood. I am a reformed old school soul. It is hard and a bit weird to think this way. But to be honest I want to be able to be seen heard and understood so I have to think that for everyone which includes children.❤ Let Truth be with you and your journey. #saturatedgrace

Mmmm...nope not on board with the kid thing. I raised 5 children alone on an 80 acre farmstead. I was pretty clear that we weren't a democracy. They were free to voice their opinion, wants, feelings etc but I was the final authority and made the decisions.
I raised produce organically, butchered, hunted, and preserved everything we ate (almost). There was always the occasional pizza or candy.
However....acknowledge the feeling games? Yes dear I hear you and recognize your feelings about wanting candy.
My kids were too smart for that. Did they try to get a piece of candy 1/2 hr before dinner at time's...of course they were kids and that's what kids do.
But they were raised to understand the concept of good nutrition and all it took from me was "the MOM look" and I'd get a shrug and a "well it was worth a try"
and I'd let them know they could have it for desert.
You TEACH them...explain the why things are done. That's our job as parents.
It might have been easier on a farm...closer to where food comes from..many more teaching moments.
And for me it was simple..." eat your dinner. It's good for you and I want you healthy because I love you.
    Peace.
Ps are you ever in Boston? I saw a driver on 128 heading down the north shore with New York plates that could have been your twin.

Wow, if I had been foolish enough to talk to my parents and say something like, "I heard a tone", I would have needed a dental surgeon a second later before I could dare say anything else. What about frivolous "needs"? A parenting style like this would never have worked with me. I'd have run roughshod over this as a kid. I'd love to see this style of parenting have to deal with a delinquent kid who has actually done something truly wrong. Maybe it's just me, but this sounds like it mixes up "need" with "want". It also feels like something only people with too much free time would come up with at all.
