Here here! Such sober, necessary criticism at the one venue that sorely needs it. The silence in the room is so palpable and telling of what everyone in the room and in Austin this week knows to be true.

This is absolutely brilliant. Growth for the sake of growth, otherwise known as killing the geese that lay the golden eggs.

Seriously amazing! Never knew who Douglas Ruskoff was until watching this video just now. Seriously might be our most favorite person.

Flipping business on its head! It's a new paradigm of business!
I've been struggling with these same issues in Business, Capitalism, Economics and Inequality, for the past five or so years. Glad to find someone with an answer! This is the best path I've seen.
There's a ride sharing cooperative that serves as an Uber counterpoint. I've heard another person put it as: the issue with Uber, is that it exists where a Wikipedia model should be. The benefits of matching a passenger and a driver should go to the passenger and the driver.

I just opened his book on Life Inc. With just the first few chapters I would still recommend it. It has been filled with ideas explaining where we are and how we got here, just like this talk.

AGREED with Chris Timmins . Highly unpopular views if you're drinking the Silicon Valley unicorn Kool-Aid, but necessary truths. Nice work, Douglas!

If you're interested in the premise of his talk I would recommend reading "The Future of The Internet and How to Stop It."

What I dont understand is that he says family businesses do better than corporations in every metric expect during a bubble. But if that was true, you wouldn't see examples like Walmart driving smaller grocery stores out of business. The global trend is clearly that big corporations eat smaller firms, however much I'd wish small local commerce could compete with Big Corporations. I wish he could elaborate on what exactly those metrics are.

Aren't microbes or insects grow exponentially?
I think it is compounding (interest) or exponential compound (for lack of a better term) that does not exist in natural envinronment.

    Douglas Rushkoff
Kind Sir, I was a resident in Nicaragua, 1996. I made several very precious friends during my work there. I have been very concerned about the economic distress the citizens have been dealing with. The development of the Canal, would catapult Nicaragua into economic power with rapidity.
I have read extensively about the HKND efforts and promise to build the Canal.
I can promise you, I have connections in the rural areas south of Bluefields, and the access to technical skills to design and build the Canal. I believe my approach will be totally acceptable to the community that has been concerned with the ecological impact.
Please refer this email to someone with whom I can communicate.
    Sincerely,
    Roger Marcus

This is how nature function, natural predators never eat to extinct their prey / food. Preditors hunt what they need and let the "herd" thrive back to it's population.
