  • The Bell 47 Was To Rotorcraft What The J-3 Has Been To Fixed Wing GA
Talk about an iconic airframe... outside of the Piper Cub, few aircraft are as stereotypical of a breed of flying machines as is the Bell 47 in the rotorcraft world.
Scott's -- Bell 47, Inc. was formed in 2009 when President and Owner, Scott Churchill, acquired the Type Certificates for Bell's Model 47 helicopter. Since then, Scott's -- Bell 47 has established itself as the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) for this extremely viable aircraft. The company's goal is 'to provide affordable, quality spare parts for the 1000+ Model 47s that are still flying worldwide today!'
Although Bell Helicopter ceased manufacturing of the aircraft in 1973, the market for this classic machine remains strong. To better support this market, the Bell 47 Type Certificate was transferred to Scott's -- Bell 47, Inc. (SB47) at a ceremony at HAI2010 on Feb 22, 2010. Scott Churchill, is no stranger to the Bell 47. He has served as pilot, mechanic, and inspector of the aircraft for over 38 years. Sister company, Scott's Helicopter Services, operates 19 Bell 47s, serves as a Customer Service Facility, and is a certified FAA repair station.
Danny Maldonado, senior vice president and chief services officer at Bell (during the transfer), said, "This model really started the commercial helicopter business and Bell has a lot of heritage in the 47. However, we felt it was the best thing for our customers, and the 47, to transition ongoing support to Scott's Helicopter and we have every confidence that Scott's will continue to provide outstanding service and support." Since its inception in 1946, the Bell 47 has transformed aviation and today remains an extremely viable aircraft with unparalleled capabilities, especially in pilot training and agricultural spraying operations. Most importantly, the Bell 47 has a dedicated and loyal customer following. Scott's brings a wealth of knowledge, experience and passion to this market. Bell acknowledges this expectation by leaving its name attached to the product; now retitled as "Scott's-Bell 47."

I was in my mom’s office after a doctor’s appointment. I was sitting at a table stamping letters when a 47 flew up just outside the building. I’ve been in love ever since.

I had my first ride in a Bell 47 approximately 45 years ago. My brother-in-law, returned Vietnam Huey Lt Commander, was flying for a company in northern Maine spraying agriculture . He gave me a ride from one field to the next. It was an experience I will never forget.

My father / Mother / us kids build two 47s for some rich guy back in 1965/66. Heard they went to the Washington DC police. The engines and transmissions came assembled. We took them from skids up, assembled power-plants to frames, wiring, tail rotor frames, even tracked the blades. WOW, barely remember, but won't forget the kerosene heater in the shop, it was a cold winter sanding tubing. Attached the bubbles....beautiful ships the 47s. Got a lot of rides from TVA as a kid. Great people at TVA, they were my Heroes as a kid.

My dad owned and operated two 47'G's with the 3B1 engine on wild deer recovery in New Zealand for over 20 years and they were the most reliable machine ever built & what a beautiful machine they are and what a great work horse lifting or dragging large loads of red deer off the hill often exceeding
2000 pounds what a great peace of machinery aye

If I was a pilot, these helicopters would be what I would want to own for my personal use. I do wonder though if that plastic 'Bubble' has been improved since the 1950's Bubbles. This is a design that has never aged, it still looks like something that belongs in the Museum of Modern Art.

Damn! I thought this WAS about starting manufacturing NEW ones again. I was really hoping they could make them "identical" but when they mention about that they talked about using a different engine, that just isn't the same. Still, time will tell and with hopefully an even better and if it's at all possible, an even more reliable engine and maybe a bit higher cruising speed they could do well. There is no other heli I know of that gives a better view, or feeling of really flying when the doors are off.

@DanBell47 we have a 1962 47 with no bar... It's very nice not to have the bar it gives a lot more room in the cockpit then the room we had back when we still had it. I personally think it looks better with out it because we had yellow safety foam around the bar and it looked like crap. Have u been in a 47 with the conversion? We did ours around 2003 and trust me once you sit in one, you'd want to do it too!

Remember the pontoon skids on these ,as far as turbines, a pilot once told me, you can lose a cylinder and still have some power to land asap, lose a tubine and fall like birdshit, now.

it it the standard Bell 47 they are reintroducing? as its a small lightweight helicopter the military designation is the H-13 Souix they were integral parts of MASH then in Korea. the Bell 47J is a 4 seat executive variant its been recorded as the first helicopter to carry a US President in as with all bell 47 with the piston engine and the main rotor is what makes that classic helicopter sound. and the guarded tail rotor on the bottom the bell 47 is more better then the Robinson R22.
