    Bill Murray's delivery of, "Please" is so, so good. His look conveys utter shock that Peck lacks such common courtesy as to not know that "please" is the magic word.

      Courtesy is something Peck is unfamiliar with as he thinks that just because he works for the government, he can just waltz into people’s places and make demands. He’s one of those guys when given a little power, let’s it go straight to his head.

    In retrospect, I’m surprised that the activities of Ghostbusters only attracted the attention of the EPA. They’re driving all over New York, and carrying what are essentially nuclear weapons that could easily turn the entire city into a giant fireball if misused. You’d think that both the FBI and the NYPD would be busting their door down. Both of them would be very unhappy over the fact that the Ghostbusters are in possession of dangerous, unlicensed equipment that could potentially put the public at great risk.

    • @nickthepick8043
      @nickthepick8043 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      I always wondered if the government would ever try to force the Ghostbusters to make military-grade weapons out of their equipment. It would make logical sense if that was their ultimatum if they were forced to answer for all these problems they were faced with, had it not been for Gozer's arrival.

      By Ghostbusters 2, Winston states they did at least get fined by nearly every possible local government body, so it's not like they got away with everything. True that it's insane they weren't further investigated by larger authorities, but this is in a universe with ghosts and nonbinary gods with demon dog servants, so who knows, maybe they're used to it.

      I 100% agree however in the reverse but yes overall you are right.
      Both of the egos here were clashing hard.
      Both of these men sizing each other up and Peck obviously had the first "Strategic Intel" over Peck while overhearing the conversation between the secretary and Vankmen.
      He got a inkling of who he would be dealing with before meeting him.
      However knowing Vankmen, even if Peck came with a cheerful and understanding attitude, Vankmen I feel would have always screwed himself with his Sarcasm and jokes.
      He would have never let down his walls.
      Maybe in the event of Peck being some kind of Investor than a EPA Agent, Vankmen would have been more forthcoming because money was now involved.
      I find this interaction interesting because this dance of personalities people do is just fun to breakdown.

      Still, the first time it was his fault. They said if the containment were to be shut off suddenly that it would be a catastrophe. I mean its either containment or demonic energies flooding the city. Its the only means they have to keep evil spirits from destroying the world. The big drawback is that all the ghosts get out if the containment fails, and it happens to have all the ghosts they catch. I think the solution is several locations to diffuse the total amounts and then work on finding a proper means of banishment. I dont think they found a way to do that though.

      Peck did goof up, but that's because someone had a hard-on for casting the EPA in a negative light. Otherwise, his stance that the Ghostbusters have to be held accountable for their actions* is entirely reasonable.
      * They use equipment that could vaporize all of NYC, by the way.

    • @markv1274
      @markv1274 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@Ragitsu Exactly! Even the Ghostbusters knew that they were playing with fire. Egon says, before the Ghostbusters buy their headquarters, that the building should be condemned. Yet Ray loves the fire pole, so it's a sale. Later, in the hotel elevator, Venkman mentions that each Ghostbuster is carrying an unlicensed nuclear accelerator on his back. Venkman knows that the Ghostbusters business is extremely dangerous, he acknowledges the necessity of licences in their line of work, yet he is totally obnoxious when Walter Peck visits the headquarters. Venkman is a duplicitous jerk. I'm amazed that people think that Venkman is totally right and that Peck is totally wrong. The ability to think rationally is absent from many who watch this film.

    When I was a kid, we had this movie taped from tv - it was a bowdlerized version with the swearing removed, which was lame, except for this scene. In the suitable-for-tv version, instead of getting up and yelling at Walter Peck, Venkman just stayed seated and calmly said "You go get the court order, and I'll sue your funny face for wrongful prosecution." The more restrained "you don't scare me" reaction actually felt more in keeping with the character than the outburst in the normal version of the movie.

Additionally, Venkman's attitude would see him eventually killed if he were a real person, as opposed to a fictional character. Another thing to remember is that you're not Bill Murray. What might sound funny coming from Murray in an Ivan Reitman film might sound charmless when dealing with folks in everyday life. Being happy-go-lucky is one thing, yet that's not Venkman. Walter Peck's confrontation with Venkman is thought-provoking. Peck is doing the right job, in the worst possible way. Someone should be concerned with the environmental effects of an unlicenced ghost hunting business. That someone does not need to be so interested in the academic credentials of the company's CEO. A small man with a big title, Peck is not able to keep his act together. He is pursuing a grand goal of protecting the environment, and gets stuck in petty bickering over academic degrees. As a man with no personal authority, no gift of negotiation and no powers of persuasion, Peck can only keep reminding the Ghostbusters that the rules are on his side, no matter what he does, because he has a position in the bureaucratic hierarchy and the Ghostbusters are nothing in that hierarchy. That he must do at the top of his lungs.
    The ability to confuse things and to turn the big into small and the small into big are essential traits of a modern bureaucracy. They are its very heart and soul. Such deep portrayals of a modern bureaucrat are seldom seen in movies.

    "I represent the EPA, the third district".
    There is no 3rd District of the EPA.
    The EPA is divided into regions; New York is in Region 2.
    Peck also threatens to come back with a court order but the implication is that it's to force the Ghostbusters to let the EPA look for hazardous chemicals, and instead he comes back with a cease and desist order (which he doesn't actually let anyone see). This implies he actually lied to the judge about what was going on with the Ghostbusters, or that he's lying about what his supposed "cease and desist order" actually says. He later invokes the Environmental Protection Act and claims the Ghostbusters are in violation of it, but no such Act actually exists.
    Peck seems legit on the surface, but he's actually a really shady character.

    • @markv1274
      @markv1274 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Let's break this down one point at a time:
      (1) 0:29 The look on Venkman's face and his verbal response shows that he's not happy about a visit from the Environmental Protection Agency. Venkman is already worried, and has made up his mind that he will be extremely difficult to his visitor.
      (2) 0:59 "Can I help you?" You mention that Walter Peck doesn't respect Venkman's doctorate. Well, Venkman doesn't call Peck "sir" upon meeting him. Maybe not a big deal, yet in this context, neither is the fact that Venkman is a doctor.
      (3) 1:02 Venkman slimes Peck. Classy move. By the way, Venkman never asks to see Peck's identification, so that's on Venkman. Whether Peck is a scammer is a moot point at this stage. Venkman has accepted that Peck is from the Environmental Protection Agency and is dealing with him as such--and giving Peck absolutely no respect.
      (4) 1:13 Venkman's pretentious use of his title.
      (5) 1:47 "May I?" is a perfectly polite way of asking for something. One can say "May I please?", yet it's not necessary. Additionally, Venkman's "magic word" stuff is bullshit. Even when Peck asks please, Venkman answers Peck's question with a question and continues to be difficult. Let us remember as well that just moments ago, Venkman acted like a jerk to Janine when all she did was (gasp!) ask for a day off. I'm sure that one of the other Ghostbusters could have manned the phones for a couple of days. So again, Venkman's insistence on manners and etiquette is absolute bullshit. He's simply not that kind of person. It's established right from the first time that we see Venkman (extra sensory perception test) that he is an arsehole. Yet he's a funny arsehole, it's a movie, so we laugh at his nonsense. Yet Venkman and Peck don't know that they're in a movie, so we need to look at the conversation from that perspective.
      (6) 2:46 This scene confirms that Peck's visit was justified, even though Peck didn't know how badly the grid was holding up. Egon and Ray are clearly concerned. Either one of them would've handled the visit from Peck with much more tact than Venkman did.
      Peck's visit and Venkman's difficult nature are necessary to advance the story of the movie. Yet that doesn't mean that Peck was wrong and Venkman was right. You could argue that Peck was an overbearing bureaucrat, yet Venkman's bullshit would try anyone's patience. Peck has probably spent the last few weeks chasing down dodgy nuclear power plants backed by billionaires, now he is copping shit from a comparatively nickel-and-dime operation known as Ghostbusters. Peck probably wanted to be in and out in five minutes, yet Venkman was an arsehole.
      I say all this as someone who can't stand the government micromanaging things, but come on, Venkman's attitude here was total bullshit.

    If Peter Venkman showed Walter Peck the storage then the whole crisis could have been averted. Yes Peck was being aggressive towards Peter, but Peter's resilient attitude towards Peck and refusing to let him take a look at the storage didn't make the situation any easier.

    Walter Peck sure didn't sound polite calling Peter as Mr. Venkman instead of Dr. Venkman after Peter told him that he's Dr. Venkman. Plus, it didn't sound polite how he asked Peter what he was a doctor of instead of saying "what is your specialty in the doctorate field?"

    Honestly, it's so easy to hate Peck here. Like, when you first meet him, you know right off the bat that this isn't business; this is personal. For some reason, whether it be jealousy or suspicion, Peck is only there to heckle them under the guise of being a concerned EPA rep. Plus, he takes it further by putting NYC in jeopardy by forcing them to suddenly shut the unit off, basically undoing all of their hard work and causing chaos in the process. And all for the sake of being right. As for what happened after the whole Debacle, I wonder if his workplace fired him for abusing his position and essentially dooming NYC to a series of Ghost hauntings (all of which was probably fixed by the GB later on).

      No, it's his *job!* The Ghostbusters are catching ghosts. Their activities have been recorded by the media. They've been seen leaving buildings with ghost traps that are giving off large amounts of vapour or smoke. Slime has been left behind at sites where the Ghostbusters have caught ghosts. The same slime is all over Venkman when Peck meets him. Peck doesn't spend much time before asking Venkman where the caught ghosts are placed. Peck suspects that in some way or another, the Ghostbusters have an unlicensed storage facility--and he's right. Venkman knows that Peck is right, and pretends to know the law. Venkman is a smart-arse, wisecracking parapsychologist. Peck works for the Environmental Protection Agency, and has likely went after (and defeated) much bigger targets than the Ghostbusters. I guarantee you that Peck knows the law better than Venkman does. Venkman is just bluffing. Peck calls Venkman's bluff and has the hardhat shut down the storage facility.
      Now, did Peck do the right thing in having the facility shut down? No, yet why _would_ Peck believe the Ghostbusters after Venkman has been such an arsehole to him? I reckon if Peck had met Egon instead of Venkman on his first visit to the Ghostbusters, things would have went differently. Venkman is an arsehole, that's his character, he's horrendously unprofessional, not to mention a bit of a swindler (e.g. persuades Ray to sell the family home in order to start a business that has little chance of prospering). Venkman's stupid behaviour and Peck's resulting hostility are necessary to advance the story. Peck could have acted better, and yes, he does fabricate things without evidence (such as his belief that the Ghostbusters spray noxious gases in order to cause hallucinations in people). Yet that in no way excuses Venkman's awfully discourteous behaviour.
      Venkman is the most obnoxious character in the movie. Still, we might laugh at his jokes because they're funny, he's no danger to us, and it's a movie. Yet Venkman and Peck don't know that they're in a movie, so it's wholly understandable as to why Peck has no patience for Venkman. Fortunately, Venkman has three fellow Ghostbusters to rein him in when he goes too far.
