Gr8 vid! I've got nothing but praise for RetroClinic. Big shout out to Mark from RetroClinic, a superb engineer and retro guru, and a great guy to deal with. A couple of things worth mentioning: - RetroClinic DataCentre Beebs also come with a 3 month warranty with free repair if the Beeb goes faulty (not incl. shipping cost) - Beeb power supply refurb kits including instructions are available on eBay for £10. This saves hassle of buying the capacitors and switching transistor separately.
I'M SOLD! Thanks for an excellent review of the RetroClinic model and the cost comparisons with the typical Ebay models. I'm not bothering with Ebay now for the Beeb.
That is the trouble with eBay it is pretty hit and miss. Plus the fact you usually get idiots who find a retro computer in their loft and then sell it as a rare computer. I've lost count of the amount of ZX Spectrums I seen being sold as rare and we all know how many millions of them were sold in the U.K. Great video. Retro Clinic looks like the way to go. Thanks for the heads up.
You know wrong, I didn't get the beeb for free. I paid for it in full, no discount then or for anything else I've had from him (although he did throw in some dead keyboards to make up some postage I could use for spares) and this video was done by me, off my own bat. But if you don't believe that, and you probably won't, then ... tough. I also find your description of "almost religious zeal" a good laugh!
I did the exact same thing. And paid over £170 for it from an ebay seller. Bad move that`s all i can say. But then i found Retro Clinic by watching your great video. Like your self. i should have done that in the first place. So i`m going to get one from there may cost me more but worth every single penny. for what your getting.
Good to know that skag0n's done. Perhaps I can finish this off reasonably now. For the extra cash, you're getting a load of well printed and updated manuals, plus a "data centre" that mimicks the hard drives, (pre-loaded with software) allows RAM based floppy drives for those that haven't got physical drives, new sideways RAM, allows communication with USB memory sticks and will even do direct USB connection to a PC. This isn't just a renovated Beeb we're talking about. Make your own mind up.
my god what a nightmare I'm a tinkerer but this is whale new ball game, regretibly eBay has been declining in everything from level quality to common decency in communication back and forth between the buyer and seller, the times are definitely changing from back in the late 90s 😞
it's tough to get an "ebay machine" ..WHY ? because the BBC re-sellers are buying em up and bumping up the price in the process.. and refurbing them.. or other folk like "ninja" who wants *6 the machine cost in certain makes / models. I refused to pay over inflated prices due to that.
LOL! Yeh, very funny. You've either not had your hands on a RetroClinic beeb, or you've got an axe to grind. The video makes it perfectly clear what work has gone in to that machine so you know your comments are rubbish. And yeh, it took about a month for those chips, plus one more, to give up the ghost from being stored in a garage for years. And as you already know, I didn't make a penny.
if people are stupid enough to switch on the machine without redoing the PSU thats their look out.. 2 seconds in google would point to that common problem.
You see, I didn't care whether he needed my kind of promotion or not. It wasn't done with his permission or even knowlege. So in terms of the village idiot being asked for directions, "Well, if I was you, I wouldn't be starting from here."
Again, I'm so glad you have your laughs. As for the rest, either you're the unluckiest person ever regarding an eBay buy, OR you're just plainly promoting RC, for whatever reason. Anyone knows that old electronics are hit or miss and actually, it's the same with old spare parts. A 20-year-old chip can fail after a week, month or never, regardless of whether it came from RC or any old attic. 99.9% are pulls from dead machines, so in all probability they were in some garage or attic, too.
...in any case, I'm done here. All I wanted was to let people that might come across this vid know that this is highly biased, like it or not. The truth is not "buy from RC or else you're in for a whole lotta trouble". The truth is, as with buying anything *that* old, it may work or it may not. It may break down after a week, or never. It doesn't matter whether you buy it from eBay or RetroClinic. True, he will clean and polish, but there's no way of knowing when and if a certain chip will fail.
Yeah, I'm a laugh a minute. For the record, I have nothing against the guy behind RetroClinic. I don't personally know him, I've bought the odd bit from him in the past, actually, and even though he tried to charge me £5 for something that would cost him 50p, he seemed ok overall. Point is, he doesn't *need* your kind of promotion, the F.U.D. -spreading with almost religious zeal about how **dangerous** it is to buy from anywhere else. And I do know, you probably got the beeb for free...
Yeah, nice try. People deserve to know the truth, not an endless promotion of RetroClinic. Truth is, these things were made to endure school treatment; they're incredibly resilient and well-made. And RetroClinic is obviously buying machines from eBay, polishing them up and re-selling with a good profit margin. Buying from eBay doesn't mean that all the chips will die in a week, nor that your power supply will explode when you switch it on... So, how much did you make for this vid?

Very nice comparison. I got the Retroclinic system.

Plays fine here.

Exactly. That's what getting a beeb from ebay is all about; uncertainty and doubt.
Thanks. Excellent video and food for thought.
