I know your ifixit pull apart of the Apple Studio Display helped me understand what failed when mine blew up. It was just sad to see how Apple stuffed me around and made it very difficult to get a full $2500 refund. It really revealed to me how despicable very wealthy companies operate. We the consumers are so easy to crush.
Thanks for stepping into this. Mark is a great chap, he is humble, honest, extremely knowledgeable and generous in sharing his experience. We should not allow anyone to bully Mark out of shame for their own product.

Companies will keep trying to make manuals and other repair information available online, primarily to maximize profits. I appreciate repair advocates and others in the tech world fighting for repairability. I prefer repairing older devices rather than buying cheap, short-lived replacements. What would we do without these people?
That Pre Amp internals look worse than a home DIY project, and they want a copyright on that? In the circuit, there is nothing new. Google needs to wake up; this is not fair.
You know there is nothing new because Mark reversed it and showed it to the public. Ethics ,IP, trade secrets are involved here. The copyright is a minor factor. Just my 2 C.

Whichever way you look at it, TomEvans has no claim in patent, copyright or design protection law. His claim to TH-cam was fraudulent.
And by not just simply ignoring that random dude who fixed something, now everybody out there knows just how simple and relatively cheap that thing actually is. It's like the manufacturers are more afraid of people knowing just how cheap something is on the parts side of things. I mean... it seems to be a reasonably well designed amplifier, and hand made low volume does have a price tag... but I'd venture to say it has an order of magnitude error in the pricing calculator. 2.5k I'd say is more reasonable than 25k... I still think that the "special sound quality" some people keep experiencing is just their bank account screaming for mercy 🤣

People wouldn't spend £25k on a phono stage: a) If they couldn't afford it or b) If results in their systems weren't good. It's their money and this is a low volume designer. People spend massive ammounts of money just to feel better for a bit. Just look at the assembly quality of the preamp he's dismantling. It looks like it was built in a shed with the cheapest aliexpress components. STRUCTURAL CARDBOARD in 30k preamp? Tell me more how high end audio makes sense. Also whats the point of massively reducing noise in phono preamps when vinyl recordings are so noisy that the amp noise is neglegible.

You can believe that they're just imagining it, but if I took the internals of a £1k phono stage, put them in a flash new box (or boxes, including PSU), slapped a £25k RRP on it along with a new brand and presented it to reviewers and dealers I'd be laughed out of the room once they'd heard it. There is certainly a law of diminishing returns, i.e. does a £25k preamp sound twice as good as a £10k one? Doubtful, but it's their money and they can afford it. They will think the difference they hear in their system is worth it. Yep, it looks very badly made compared to what you'd expect at that price point, but there are some cheap elements that will be there for sound, such as the 'double decking' to keep connection lengths short between boards/sections, the plastic supports as metal could cause problems. These things are sold on performance, with the cost to produce down to manually testing/matching each component before placing it in the unit. For example the design of parallel opamps for noise cancellation will require extremely fine matching. I don't agree with what TE did on the copyright strike, nor do I agree with the grinding off of part numbers, but I don't think people understand how things work in this world, especially the fact that TE is not going round robbing grannies of their savings/kids inheritances by hawking £25k teenagers school projects to them. BTW, TE doesn't charge £25k for these things, more like £10k. That price is the RRP and the distributors/retailers take the rest. The noise reduction here is for the noise introduced by amplifying such a tiny signal as is produced by a moving coil type cartridge. A lot of the initial vinyl noise reduction will be done by the high quality cartridge/stylus used in these kinds of set ups.
I'd say a lot of it is absolute BS. One classic case in point is "Audiophile Ethernet switches" - Absolute BS and people pay a fortune for them. A little knowledge can be dangerous to ones wealth.

I start to think this Tom Evans must be living after a rock... after DCS got a truck load of flack on the internet for harassing independent reviewers, a got a good taste of the Streisand effect, you would think others would be more cautious with such practices. Well, he learned the hard way.
Actually what Mark doesn't include in his video is the fact that it was he who sent it to TE poorly packaged in the first place, hence the physical damage. The cap had already gone, and the owner sent it to him. He didn't want to do it (poss after finding the ground off part numbers). But after poorly packing it any insurance/carrier liability would have been invalidated, so he's saving himself and the customer here really.

If you watched the video you will have heard his opening line, “the unit was damaged in the post” but he fails to mention the truth. It was Mark that posted the unit to us but as I said he fails to mention he posted an expensive amplifier with the local post office and wrapped it in a couple of sheets bubble wrap and placed it in a card box. On arrival here we noticed a rattle from the card box and after opening it we could see the units acrylic box was broken into several parts and 4 of the metal corner parts had deep dents. To make matters worse we could clearly see that the unit had been previously opened by Mark, this also voids the manufacturers warranty. Even so we offered to rebuild the unit into a new box and provide a new set of painted metalwork and also repair the fault correctly. When we ship the units out they are sent with either Fedex, DHL, or UPS and are double boxed, the outer boxes are either made from plywood or tough Pelican cases. If you take a look at all the carriers terms and conditions you will note they will not cover any insurance costs on anything valuable that has not been double boxed correctly. We have sent out nearly 80 units worldwide without ANY damage, there are units that have been sent as far away as N.Z, the far east and the USA. [More about other stuff removed as we're talking about the packaging here] Kind regards. Tom.

I’m clearly stating that TE didn’t cause the damage, and likely posted it well to mark. However, the claim that mark had this, wouldn’t fix it and sent it on badly, then got it back and reverse engineered the whole thing, made a professional service manual and did repair it makes no sense.
Watching this, I’m thinking that I’m in the wrong line of work… I should make handmade preamps in my garage for $10K a piece using perfboard and nylon standoffs… any takers? I’ll make sure the XLR jacks are *gold plated*! That wiring looks like bog-standard, unshielded hook up wire like I use in guitar pedals… I’ve assembled and hand wired pieces similar in scale and complexity to this unit before - it’s a *lot* of work, but IMO it’s also not necessary for a phono pre! Also, so many tantalum caps. Why?!? 😂 I also find it deeply irritating that whomever bought this machine literally paid the guy to obfuscate what components are inside. If you’re making hand-built machines, you *should* make it repairable because it’s going to be necessary before too long! Sigh…

To make matters worse we could clearly see that the unit had been previously opened by Mark, this also voids the manufacturers warranty.
Even so we offered to rebuild the unit into a new box and provide a new set of painted metalwork and also repair the fault correctly.
When we ship the units out they are sent with either Fedex, DHL, or UPS and are double boxed, the outer boxes are either made from plywood or tough Pelican cases.
If you take a look at all the carriers terms and conditions you will note they will not cover any insurance costs on anything valuable that has not been double boxed correctly.
We have sent out nearly 80 units worldwide without ANY damage, there are units that have been sent as far away as N.Z, the far east and the USA.

@@churchers FWIW I think TE shouldn't have put in a copyright claim against Mark's video, nor should he be grinding off part numbers, but as he says, there are two sides to every story and Mark has not been entirely honest himself.
@@keithposter5543 (original bit removed as I’ve just released it’s an email not direct comment). The original story makes far more sense. I’m clearly stating that TE didn’t cause the damage, and likely posted it well to mark. However, the claim that mark had this, wouldn’t fix it and sent it on badly, then got it back and reverse engineered the whole thing, made a professional service manual and did repair it makes no sense.

Watching this, I’m thinking that I’m in the wrong line of work… I should make handmade preamps in my garage for $10K a piece using perfboard and nylon standoffs… any takers? I’ll make sure the XLR jacks are *gold plated*!
That wiring looks like bog-standard, unshielded hook up wire like I use in guitar pedals…
I’ve assembled and hand wired pieces similar in scale and complexity to this unit before - it’s a *lot* of work, but IMO it’s also not necessary for a phono pre!
Also, so many tantalum caps. Why?!? 😂
I also find it deeply irritating that whomever bought this machine literally paid the guy to obfuscate what components are inside. If you’re making hand-built machines, you *should* make it repairable because it’s going to be necessary before too long!
