His other Kimmel performance a couple years ago, he mixes like 3-4 songs into one. Plus plays piano, has a beat… machine (sampler🤨) idk what it’s called that he programs during the performance and some guitar. Guitar-wise he’s no randy Rhodes, but he’s competent and can do some basic solos.
Yeah in this last album he mixed hip-hop/rap with the rock. Even when he was only a rapper he did rock shows, warped tour, etc. his favorite band was blink-182 (why their drummer [Travis Barker] drummed on and produced the albums. His vocal range is a bit limited, but he works around it and makes it work. He is NO serj. Before I even heard I was like… oh no…

I know Autotune is seen as a negative thing and it certainly is in many occasions especially when over produced.... but really it's more of a tool used to get a particular sound the artist wants or to perfect an already great vocal performance and it's become a mainstay in modern day music whether you like it or not. Obviously not everyone uses it but majority of major artists do. That being said, I can't say whether or not it was used in this performance particularly but both MGK and Blackbear are artists that use it in their music.
P.S. I personally don't hate the Ariels cover, it sounds like a change of genre to a more grunge sound and if you hadn't known the greatness of the original it would probably be more palatable. His song Papercuts also has more of a grunge music sound to it... I don't think MGK is a great singer but his rap music as well as his Pop-Punk genre of music doesn't require a wide variety of vocal range. I personally thing there's a great tonality to his voice and he makes a bunch of great songs, especially when he talks about his mental state and life struggles.
Maybe as a musician myself whom isn't going to win any singing competition but has faith in their songwriting capabilities, maybe I just have an understanding that some people don't need to be the best performer to make great music.
