Speedo Squealing on your 2nd Gen Toyota?

  • **Please note: We recommend using a different lubricant in the speedo cable. The 3 in 1 Oil we used did not last very long and the squealing has returned. Please let us know what you end up using in the comments so others can use a better lubricant**
    In this video, my wife and I take apart the dash to fix our squealing speedo cable. We found that when the truck first started to move on a cold day, there was a loud squealing sound coming from behind the dash. We ended up dripping some oil down the cable to lubricate it and it did the trick. While we had the dash apart, we also decided to replace the dash lights again, this time with LEDs. The third fix we decided to tackle was trying to diagnose some radio problems where we were unsuccessful. In general, this video is meant to demonstrate how to get deep behind the dash of your 90s Toyota to fix those tricky annoying problems you may have.

    Thanks, I appreciate your reply and that fully explains my questions. Great vid, nice upgrades! I’m in the middle of doing the same to my 1994 Toyota DLX Xtra Cab 4WD V6 pickup. I’ve already converted the dome light bulb to LED, upgraded my rear view mirror which had no lights to a SR5 model rear view mirror which has 2 map lights, and replaced the burned out factory incandescent bulb on the floor shifter console to all LED’s. The last bulbs to replace and convert are the gauge cluster and the climate control bulbs. Thanks again for your help 👍

    I have the same exact truck and had the same problem. I ended up taking the whole speedo cable out and sucking a can of liquid white lithium grease through it with a vacuum pump. Pretty tedious but I couldn't think of another way to get actual grease in these stupid sealed cables and the new ones are >$100.

      Yeah it's a pain eh? I'll probably do it next time I have the dash apart. Thanks for the advice!

      Yeah there's a trick to getting the parking brake cable out that makes it a lot easier. You can find it pretty easy on TH-cam

    Great video walkthrough on this. Your 4runner looks great as well, I have the same color & setup but with a automatic transmission.

    There is a product called deoxit that is supposed to help remove corrosion from terminal connectors. A lot of computer guys who repair old vintage computers use it a lot. I would try that on your terminal leads for the radio.

    nice video; you guys concentrated on the cable but the noise may have been coming from the speedometer itself right or did you rule that out somehow?

    • @roughcutsgarage
      @roughcutsgarage  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The whining went away after filling the cable with oil but has come back after a while. It very well could be the speedo and not the cable. Initially figured it was the cable since the oil temporarily fixed the problem.

  • @mdoneg

    Did that lub fix the speedo issue? Mine just started making this noise at colder temps.

    • @roughcutsgarage
      @roughcutsgarage  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Ours only makes it at colder temps as well. The 3 in 1 oil worked for a while at colder temps but I think it ran out again as the noise has come back. I recommend using a different lube than the one we used but it does work. A lot easier than trying to replace the cable.

    So it’s just the dimmer and hazards that need to be connected to test all the lights? I replaced with led but am not getting the enunciator lights (except battery) to come on, even when switching back to bulbs. So I’m wondering what I’m missing. 91 4Runner, all the other lights are working.

    • @roughcutsgarage
      @roughcutsgarage  ปีที่แล้ว

      There are also the 4 harnesses across the top if I recall correctly.

    • @gregwilcox55
      @gregwilcox55 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@roughcutsgarage So I did have those plugged in. It turned out the fuse blew. I also had issues using the led lights.. it started to smoke on the circuit board on the back. Maybe there was something I was doing wrong, not sure. Either way I switched back to bulbs and replaced the fuse and it's all good now.

    • @roughcutsgarage
      @roughcutsgarage  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@gregwilcox55 That's weird. That is definitely not supposed to happen. Could possibly be the circuit board on that silicone mat on the back shorting on something like a screw. Could probably find another one at a wrecker if you want LEDs that badly. Sorry it didn't work out.

    Great video. I'm about to do this job on my 94 4runner and want to avoid the purple turn signal lights. Are the turn signals the 194 bulbs or the 74 bulbs and do you have to get them in green or is there a green lense in the dashboard? Same question kind of applies to the "idiot lights" below, I imagine you used white bulbs and the dash gives them their colour

    • @roughcutsgarage
      @roughcutsgarage  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you! We just used white. There are already green filters behind the turn signals. All of the warning lights have filters for their various colours as well.

    • @roughcutsgarage
      @roughcutsgarage  ปีที่แล้ว

      Turn signals I believe were 194, the warning lights are 74.
