    I have the Spinal Kinetics M6-L lumbar implanted on top of an old two level fusion. OUTSTANDING! At the time in 2016 I had to fly to Barcelona to Dr Clavel as this was not approved yet in the US, although CE approved for about 12 years in Europe and in other Countries following the CE approval. In a nut shell, the artificial disc was invented in Germany Circa mid 70’s at the Charite Hospital. This left Europe as a leader and a epicenter of excellence. The US has lagged behind for various reasons. Take note, this disc has a playable center core to take the shocks away which reduces the likelihood of ASD (Adjacent Segment Disease), which is exactly what happened to me 10 years later after that old fusion. Picking an excellent surgeon that has performed many hundreds with a very low revision rate is critical in my opinion. At the time Dr Clavel had 550 lumbar discs and 1200 cervical with two revisions in total. One older revision was due to a woman with bone density issues, now they protest for that. I got my life back with the M6-L (which I researched like crazy first and then chose the surgeon). I also have two ESP discs in my neck in 2018 with Dr Clavel as well. I am also really happy. Be prepared to travel to the right “take the high road” surgeon. Probably in a big City. Physical therapy followthrough after is VERY important to get dormant muscles reactivated because pain causes posture compensations that won’t go away automatically after the surgery. I say VERY important because I waited and went back to my life and that was poor judgment. Only once I went to 8weeks of twice a week PT did I regain muscle reactivations that protect the core and reduce pain, etc.

      Dear JR Chicago, thank you for sharing your story and we are pleased to hear of your positive outcome from ADR with the M6 and ESP Discs. For our overseas patients who travel for Disc Replacement in Germany, intensive post-op rehabilitation programs are provided at Medicos AufShalke (Guided Video Tour on this channel). Thank you again JR Chicago and we wish you a lifetime of health and mobility! Team SC

      Hello JR Chicago, thank you for sharing, I am trying to avoid L4/L5 fusion and like you said, not much luck in the US. From your text, this is for Lumbar as well correct? Also, this would be totally out of pocket, can you share roughly what one should budget for, surgery + rest of pre and post op cost? Basically all-in what would be a general cost estimate for this, if you don't mind sharing?

      Hey JR , are you happy with your ESP disc and which levels did you get done, I got the reverse have 3 level m6c on my neck and might need a revision in the middle and the level at the top . I hope you are doing well and i also love the care and the placement i got with dr. Clavel.

    • @jrchicago9216
      @jrchicago9216 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lumbar and cervical are the only two models, but you may want to ask the expert. The US is many years behind Europe for various reasons. I have the Spinal Kinetics M6L lumbar at L3/4 on top of a older double level fusion since 2016. Excellent! Went to Dr Clavel in Barcelona who has performed several thousand. Think it was $34k USD plus hotel, etc. For example, in 2019 a Dr in Beverly Hills performed the first two level cervical neck implants in the US. Dr Clavel had performed 2100 by 2016 and 80% were double level. I have two ESP discs in my neck in 2018.
      The artificial disc was invented in Germany Circa mid 1970’s and Europe is the epicenter of excellence in artificial discs. The US FDA takes many years and $14 milllion dollars to obtain approval. What happens is manufacturers go to Europe first to obtain CE approval opening a market of about 750 million people and other countries will fast track a CE approved device. So essentially you get a 1 Billion people market in less time and cost. This is one reason why the US is LAST. Surgical Attitudes in the US can “pretend” that artificial discs are experimental - ya, to that surgeon stuck in the past. These discs require highly accurate carpentry skills. Fusions can chop out bone that will grow back, so the technique is very different.

I was able to leave the hospital and enjoy the walking City of Barcelona for 10 days after and we had a real fun time. That is how my recovery was. You do need physical therapy to get your compensation muscles and dormant muscles back in sync after any of these surgeries. Clavel has performed around several thousand of these back in 2016.
