Left4Cake Dont buy shit from Chinese companies. If the kart is really cheap, it's a knockoff, and probably has a timebomb. But then again, most karts are made in China, so its a risk either way. lmao. I'm glad I never bought into the flashkarts, i just waited for a CFW that was well developed, and maintained.
Flash arts have so many possibilities with emulators and homebrew and such, honestly I think the risk is worth it. But if you buy a trusted flashcart and you take precautions to avoid getting banned from Nintendo’s network then you will be fine. I’ve had my flashcart for over a year now and I’m running the newest update and I even have custom firmware running with homebrew and my flashcart hasn’t been timebombed and my console hasn’t gotten banned.
Figuring out that I could simply download newer R4 firmware onto my MicroSD card to avoid the timebomb and having to go backwards in date was probably one of my best 14 year old moments.

So THAT'S what it was. My r4i stopped working way back in 2014. One day when I went to use it, it just said an error about the date in red writing. I had to turn the date back on my ds so I could use it after that, it was super annoying bc it meant I couldn't progress on animal crossing and other time-based games. I thought I'd screwed my card up somehow haha
@@BrandonBoyPH It does for mine. You don't have to set the date that far back, though. Any date within the 'safe' period is valid (turned mine down to 2016 from 2019, and it started working again)

+Steven Villman No, because nintendo would get thier asses handed to them in a class action lawsuit because the carts would be considered a lemon. Oh my God! I lost so many of my childhood games to a time-bomb and didn't know why. I ordered a new one recently too. When I get it I'll definitely check. Thank you so much!
Thank you for this video, I had a lot of people asking me on my R4i Gold Pro tutorial asking me about a timebomb and I needed to do some research for it. After lots of testing I found out that the card I made a tutorial for has a timebomb but activates in 2019 and is triggered when the R4 card is launched. But after setting the date on my DSi to 1/01/2000 I was easily able to bypass it XD.

can you back up that claim? I've never seen a flashcard with a date on it that didn't use a timebomb. All those cards listed on "3ds.hacks.guide" also have a timebomb
Can you back up your claim? Anecdotal evidence is not evidence. When you make a statement about "all" of something, you need to have some kind of empirical proof.
It's not empirical evidence but having the mentioned site state that "All R4iSDHC 20XX flashcarts are identical" it is safe to assume other 20XX cards have a timebomb as well. I didn't check other sources nor did i test the cards myself, i am trusting the info on the 3ds guide page and simply don't want to bother myself with those cards. It is way less work to just get a card that is confirmed to have no timebomb than to speculate or put more time into researching the matter, after I've solely been seeing those cards having timebombs in videos and forum posts.
The r4’s time bomb depends on what software is installed if you installed the version for the company you will most likely have it, install a user made one and it might not have it

The R4 SDHC Gold Pro 3DS RTS 2017 HAS a Time Bomb (set to activate by september of 2019 I think). I worked around it by having YSMenu replace the firmware of the card.

For anyone with a timebomb, you can try to disable it. For my card, (R4 SDHC Dual-Core 2015) I set my date to 2011, and the timebomb was disabled. Try different dates for yours, but it worked for me! :D Have fun.

I once had a time bomb R4. I thought I had to update the thing, but I didn't know how. Thankfully I remembered a friend of mine used to rewind his phone's internal clock to use a feature in a game app that was unable to function do to some time expiration. So I thought to myself "maybe I should do what he did" and it worked.
I have an R4 Gold Pro 2018, with a timebomb. Thanks to Brought Luck, I deactivated the timebomb with YSmenu. In order for it to work, you need add the .nds file in the R4 and replace the R4's kernel with YSmenu's kernel.
That's what people said about 90's Honda's too.... And they are still all over the world running just fine. Just because something's outdated doesn't mean we just forget about it and let it fall apart to nothing!!
This *_might_* seem like a stupid question to many of you here - but what exactly is a R4 card, and what does it do there on the Nintendo DS and Nintendo 3DS/Nintendo 2DS families of portable (hand-held) video game console systems???
The timebomb idea is counter-intuitive anyways, if my card died I would try a different card all together regardless - in any case I own an AceKard 2i (bought it straight from their site) and had zero issues over 8 years - I wanted to see what the timebomb actually looked like - good thing it appears it only impacted a few types of R4 cards
Payday 2 stuffs what I already have cfw with this method and I have twloader its pretty cool. Plus I’m not saying that to you it’s to mosey animator jack and tech James. I also meant that People don’t need a $20 R4 when you can have seedminer method for $2
My R4i 3DS RTS WiFi Card has a Time Bomb, but that doesnt really matter because there are still updates available for it on the r4 Website... :) Thanks for the Video!
when i read the title my heart almost exploded im 14 i thought my new 3ds xl would explode since i added cfw and homebrew😰😂🤣😂🤣 you scared me half to death lol
My r4 that ive had since like 2009 or 2010 has working software but i guess you can say the card itself literally falling apart can be considered a timebomb 😂
Cocimarciano reverse engineering a r4 card and attempting to code out the time bomb, only way I can think of removing it and it is more effort than changing the date.
there is a file called R4.dat this contains the timebomb but it's very difficult to edit, because is encrypted, the solution is set back the date on the DS/3DS console or update the kernel
Yeah, I just ordered 2 R4 Gold Pro from Newegg, and buyers are confirming that it has the *Timebomb.* Fortunately, I will be using them on my DSi and DSLite, which do not require current date. Also, the R4s were $8 each. Besides, Newegg have a great return policies.
I remember my cousin tried to run one on his 3DS. The R4, you might have guessed, got stuck in the Game Card slot. Luckily, we managed it to get it out.
Thanks for the video. I got a R4 for like $8 and when I checked it, it had the "timebomb". Good to know all I need to do is change the time back or I would've panicked in year.
I think I have a r4i + just like yours and it might have a time bomb. I can't quite remember but I believe I had trouble loading one of the games. I reset. Then my console froze on two occasions when entering my system settings. Now my DS freezes upon boot up. The top screen plays the Nintendo logo, then freezes to white. The bottom screen doesn't display the health and safety text, then freezes to red. I'm about to change the motherboard to see if that resolves the issue, but I'm afraid to use this card.
I heard that if you install YSmenu instead of screwing with the date on the system that it will remove the timebomb, but I don't know if it works, but have heard it has.
Just curious how these multi game carts are being sold without the seller being charged with piracy, copyright infringement, and illegal distribution of unlicensed nintendo games!
Mine is an R4i 3DS RTS card, it not only has time bomb, but saving doesn’t do anything, after restarting my DSi the save does not affect anything and it goes on to say creating save file
My R4 is from 2011 but I think the place I bought it from was one of the few official US online stores for them... but mine was a DS card that I was able to use on my OG Teal 3DS until a certain firmware update. (So now I just primarily use it on my DS Lite)... so I’m guessing this timebomb is just with fake 3DS R4 cards? (I never got a 3DS one just the DS one). Any recommendations for a good 3DS one?
Just bought a r4 gold pro "2020" and it´s not booting at all. White screen. If i remove the SD card, it shows "no card" so i assume the DS Lite boots the card just fine but then it doesn´t load the firmware from the sd card...
Yeah I remember a few years back my brother and I had one and it did have a time bomb but luckily my brother knew what to do so we just set it back a few years back and it worked again
It appears Gold Pro R4 2020 might have a time bomb because it is saying, "Wrong date or fireware expired! Check system settings" or something like that
Bit late to the discussion, but I have a 'R4 SDHC RTS Lite' in the 2018 version which I just got. I remmebered your video and went to check imediately and yes. That one does have a Timebomb on it.
So how do you tell if it has a timebomb in the first place without doing this possible double edged sword technique. (Double edged sword is a metaphor for basically trading something good and helpful for something bad and useless.) Like are there any possible clues or perhaps peculiar quirkiness to tell beforehand?
I have a timebomb my R4i RTS 3DS card running on my DSi. I hadn't touched it in a couple of months until last night so I'm not sure when it triggered. It would be really nice to figure out how to get rid of it.
I actually got an R4 clone in like 2016. It still works to this day with no time bomb. I set the clock to 2099 and it still worked. Good thing too, because I can't get YSMenu working.
I recommend changing your date on the console a few years back and try again. If it doesn't work, repeat the 1st step a few times until it works. Mine had a similar situation that whenever I went in the games tab it would freeze. But it's a simple fix.
Jonah Raines I don’t really care anymore anyways, this was like 7 or so years ago. If I wanna play some ds games I don’t already own I’ve got a pc to emulate them on.
Okay, I have a R4ITT PURPLE it has no timebombs and when I put it in my 3ds xl new orange/white when I put the r4itt in my 3ds im on my home screen and nothing happens I have checked whats on it. It has the games and all just dosent load
I got one with a timebomb. From the date I received it in the mail, to the date that the time bomb is set to go off was 633 days. I imagine it's 2 years after the kernel with the timebombs installed or 2 years after its first put into a ds. Either way, I set my clock to 2005 so all the days match up with this year's, and I've got about 20 years till I gotta move it back
I have a R4 Gold Pro 2014 and it has a timebomb. The first time I encountered it I was a little panicked and since I couldn’t understand English yet and it was red text I ran to my dad to see if he knew what was going on. He found the solution on internet and I just had to change the date. Now I just have to set the date to 2013, 10 years ago, and it works just fine. I was looking for videos on where to get more themes but I found this one hoping for a better solution but it seems that changing the date is the best option I have for now.
+Tech James Hey, uhm, I really like this tutorial, but I wanted to ask; do you know if all these fake R4 Card flashcarts are the same, and what I mean by that is, if, let's say, I buy 2 different fake R4 Gold Pro carts from a place like AliExpress, are these 2 R4 Gold carts going to be the same as one another, or will they be slightly different? Also, what's the difference between the GOLD Pro, the Dual-Core, the RTS LITE and all the other versions in practice? And does this timebomb fix work for all of them? Thanks for the video by the way, I normally wouldn't buy something like this, as I wouldn't have the confidence on whether I can fix it or not, but your video seems pretty clear and easy to follow. Again, thanks so much.
The only difference is that they have fancy names lol. I can't answer that question but I can answer the gold question. The two, cards should be the same. It will only be different if they already have kernels on them because the sellers may have put different kernels on each one. Now you can easily fix that by deleting the whole program on the micro sd card then going to the R4 site and choose one you want for both cards. Then they would be exactly the same. Sorry if my explanation doesn't make much sense. It's kinda hard to explain through a TH-cam comment. But if you're still confused, just reply and I can try to explain it better.
Geez i thought my DSi will explode

@@KevenLC I mean like it may overrun your DS and fry some circuits but eh
No bombs
I have an R4 Gold Pro 2018, with a timebomb. Thanks to Brought Luck, I deactivated the timebomb with YSmenu. In order for it to work, you need add the .nds file in the R4 and replace the R4's kernel with YSmenu's kernel.
Tbh if its gonna blow up in a few years I wouldnt care cuz its several years later and most likely the 3ds will be out dated
That's what people said about 90's Honda's too.... And they are still all over the world running just fine. Just because something's outdated doesn't mean we just forget about it and let it fall apart to nothing!!
Are you saying i can set the year to the 90's and be safe? (until 20 years into the future, that is)
This *_might_* seem like a stupid question to many of you here - but what exactly is a R4 card, and what does it do there on the Nintendo DS and Nintendo 3DS/Nintendo 2DS families of portable (hand-held) video game console systems???
Steven Villman An R4 card is the DS cartridge technical name
It's basically a card that you can put roms on, it's for pirating ds games
It's commonly used for pirating DS games, but it's also often used as a gateway to get CFW (custom firmware) onto the 3DS.
It’s not always pirating. Some just put roms of games they own. Easier than carrying so many DS games around.
Can't the time bomb be disabled permanently?
Just call the CTs
Any Neptunia fans here thinking of the R4 robot enemies and the villain CFW Arfoire herself?
Nope I just install cfw with dsiware seed miner for $2 on 11.6 :D
How is that related to this video?
IKR this is r4’s we’re talking about not how to homebrew a 3ds
Because with cfw you can play ds games with twloader
SmashyPlays im tryin to help u out here lol
Payday 2 stuffs what I already have cfw with this method and I have twloader its pretty cool. Plus I’m not saying that to you it’s to mosey animator jack and tech James. I also meant that People don’t need a $20 R4 when you can have seedminer method for $2
Bro you are the best I just unlocked my childhood
I have time bomb R4 SDHC Gold Pro 2018
Ok thanks for letting me know, i ordered one off wish for $4.
Get Rekt by Me yes
Get Rekt by Me it means in a few years the r4 card while cease to work due to a software scam
Tech James same here...
Same :D mine is 2017 but does that have anything different? or is it another scam to buy newer card?
My R4i 3DS RTS WiFi Card has a Time Bomb, but that doesnt really matter because there are still updates available for it on the r4 Website... :) Thanks for the Video!
Jokes on you, i can't even load my r4 anymore!
THANK YOU SO MUCH. Seriously I thought I would never be able to play games again. Also the calendar fix works the calendar on all ds versions
Guessing their not gonna be supported after 2020 ?
Wow, I’m glad people are still talking about R4 cards.
Which website would you recommend buying one from? I’m thinking about getting back in the game.
I found a r4i gold on eBay for $8 and removed the timebomb and stored heaps of new games
Why do they scam ppl like this tho? I don't get it.
It's simple, for more money!
You really dont get it? Cant think of any reason? Jesus christ are you naive. For the love of god stay away from softmodding.
wall mob Who are you taking to?
Money
Because they Work for PlayStation!!!!
Don't worry. my r4 is from 2000's and it still work till this very day.
Do you have standard R4 DS? If so, I do too
when i read the title my heart almost exploded im 14 i thought my new 3ds xl would explode since i added cfw and homebrew😰😂🤣😂🤣 you scared me half to death lol
just a heads-up. Software can't explode
@@asherael true
if it did have a timebomb and it broke how would you fix? would you just set date back or what?
I always hear awful instead of R4
My r4 that ive had since like 2009 or 2010 has working software but i guess you can say the card itself literally falling apart can be considered a timebomb 😂
Fix it with super glue
so sad but before i chek it , do you know how to remove it?
Cocimarciano reverse engineering a r4 card and attempting to code out the time bomb, only way I can think of removing it and it is more effort than changing the date.
there is a file called R4.dat this contains the timebomb but it's very difficult to edit, because is encrypted, the solution is set back the date on the DS/3DS console or update the kernel
Yes change the year from 2018 to 2015/14/13 etc.
If you have animal crossing you probably shouldn't
I actually fell for the Time bomb thing and bought a new r4 card like 2 or 3 times
thanks for making this video , now I know😁
It didn't work when I changed the time in the future but it worked in the past🤔
the fact we're close to 2025 is crazy
The fact that it is 2025 is crazy
My R4 has time bomb but dont worry just reset it back to like 2001 or so and nothing bad will happen
the R4 3ds 2019 DSHC has a time bomb :(
Daniel Maldonado R.I.P my 2014 r4 card work
Pretty simple and smart scam. Good on you man for letting people know.
How i run R4 i 3ds on my 3ds?
bonnibahn99 only some r4 can run on 3ds. Yeah i dissapointed too
rendy irwansyah thanks
bonnibahn99 no problem
I remember my cousin tried to run one on his 3DS. The R4, you might have guessed, got stuck in the Game Card slot. Luckily, we managed it to get it out.
I had one of these as a kid and I do remember that it just stopped working one day. Never knew that this was the reason why
I.... smell.... click..... bait.....
Spintechfilms lmao how
Click bate? are you dumb lol.
Tech James well i dont know~ it got you to comment on my comment after all~
I reply to all comments XD
I smell ellipses
1:55 whoa. December 22 2018? Are you from the future?
Yeah
Yeah I suggest using a different card.
@@jonahraines Forgot I posted this. As it turns out, the motherboard on the DS went bad. Replaced it, and now everything is working fine.
Do those combo games with 500 in one have time bombes?
what the fuck.
I actually believed my 3ds would explode..fr D:
nice video.
I heard that if you install YSmenu instead of screwing with the date on the system that it will remove the timebomb, but I don't know if it works, but have heard it has.
Me: does what the video says
Tehc
Just curious how these multi game carts are being sold without the seller being charged with piracy, copyright infringement, and illegal distribution of unlicensed nintendo games!
that intro is still dope as hell
Mine is an R4i 3DS RTS card, it not only has time bomb, but saving doesn’t do anything, after restarting my DSi the save does not affect anything and it goes on to say creating save file
After i Boot up My Card IT says "Data corrupted" even though i didnt Boot up any Game just the card. Weird right?
the R4 card doesn't damage the nintendo hardware/console but only to the card itself right?
My R4 is from 2011 but I think the place I bought it from was one of the few official US online stores for them... but mine was a DS card that I was able to use on my OG Teal 3DS until a certain firmware update. (So now I just primarily use it on my DS Lite)... so I’m guessing this timebomb is just with fake 3DS R4 cards? (I never got a 3DS one just the DS one). Any recommendations for a good 3DS one?
What happens if you activate a time bomb while testing to see if you have one?
2:35 Call of Duty Black Ops for DS 😂 Best DS game
Just bought a r4 gold pro "2020" and it´s not booting at all.
White screen.
If i remove the SD card, it shows "no card" so i assume the DS Lite boots the card just fine but then it doesn´t load the firmware from the sd card...
Yeah I remember a few years back my brother and I had one and it did have a time bomb but luckily my brother knew what to do so we just set it back a few years back and it worked again
What happens if you don't take any precautions and the time bomb affects the ds, do you need a new ds or a new flash cart?
It appears Gold Pro R4 2020 might have a time bomb because it is saying, "Wrong date or fireware expired! Check system settings" or something like that
I think the word Gold means something else
Why would it be Gold Pro
Gold it is
but PRO may stand for something else on a R4 CARD
Bit late to the discussion, but I have a 'R4 SDHC RTS Lite' in the 2018 version which I just got. I remmebered your video and went to check imediately and yes. That one does have a Timebomb on it.
Thanks for the video, I always wondered why that yellow one for the DSI randomly stopped working. I guess turning back the year does fix the problem.
So how do you tell if it has a timebomb in the first place without doing this possible double edged sword technique. (Double edged sword is a metaphor for basically trading something good and helpful for something bad and useless.) Like are there any possible clues or perhaps peculiar quirkiness to tell beforehand?
Why do you think he wouldn't know what double-edge sword is
I have a timebomb my R4i RTS 3DS card running on my DSi. I hadn't touched it in a couple of months until last night so I'm not sure when it triggered. It would be really nice to figure out how to get rid of it.
I backed the year to 2017 and it works again. So that's good. An actual fix would be awesome but at least it's working.
I've got the same card same problem. Slightly annoying.
This video brings back so many memories 😄😄😄
It's worth noting that some cards won't even boot if the time bome is active. The R4iSDHC for example.
When I was little and I had a DS Lite I had an R4 card that suddenly stopped working, now I know it was a Timebomb!
I actually got an R4 clone in like 2016. It still works to this day with no time bomb. I set the clock to 2099 and it still worked. Good thing too, because I can't get YSMenu working.
The dude who sold them where I live put these in. Except it was less obvious, there was no message or anything, the thing just stopped working.
@@noidTV yeah, makes sense.
Apparently mine has a Time Bomb because I got the Red Date message. Turned back the clock.
Good timing, my r4 card will be arriving within a week.
Either way, I set my clock to 2005 so all the days match up with this year's, and I've got about 20 years till I gotta move it back
0:50 I instantly knew to change the system time... and I was 12 when it happened
