  • How To Spray Epoxy Primer Sealer [BMW E30 Engine Bay] Novol 2K Epoxy Primer Paint Guide | 037
    In this video, I progress from the previous front support conversion by painting the engine bay in Novol 2K Epoxy Primer.
    Here’s what I used in this video:
    Red Scotchbrite Pads: ebay.us/txFdxe
    Novol 2k Epoxy Primer: ebay.us/gmlxQY
    Sealey 0.8mm Spray Gun: ebay.us/2qvsgy
    150L Compressor: ebay.us/xxiVq8
    Painting Mask: ebay.us/gsQzot
    Poly Masking Sheets: ebay.us/e4Ms44
    The engine bay on the BMW E30 was a particularly tired state with rust patches around various brackets and flaking clear coat on every surface. In doing the removable front support mod I'd even uncovered a considerable amount of bare metal around the front of the engine bay.
    I was tempted to consider the engine bay as just a future project, but knowing that the Upol etch primer I'd put on to simply avoid flash rusting would likely absorb water and cause a lot of rusting in the future, I knew I wanted to apply 2k primer-sealer to a few parts so I started sanding.
    When you start sanding, it invariably expands and you end up sanding things you originally intended to leave because the closer you look more more issues you see. I started with a more aggressive paper to ensure I'd taken off all the weak clear coat and any rust then worked my way up to 3M red scotchbrite pads which give a nice 800 grit style finish. Ideal for accepting a top coat.
    Once I'd sanded the entire engine bay and was quite happy with the result, I turned my attention to what I'd want to be painting it with.
    I decided to use a really good quality Novol Epoxy Primer, this is a proper 2k 2-part paint with hardener that is far more solid than any paint or primer you get from a can. This hardened finish is a barrier for water, and also a rust inhibitor. It can even be used as a finish coat for more utilitarian applications, but for automotive bodywork it's perfect as a direct to bare metal primer and I've had excellent results with it before.
    In my experience, it also sands nicely, which is useful when you're painting the base and clear onto it. From a primer perspective, other than the inconvenience of using it, I can't see why you'd opt to use any other type of primer when doing an engine bay or any other bodywork.
    One issue I had was only having access to my mini spray gun, it's a Sealey patching gun with a fine 0.8mm fluid tip nozzle. Generally considered way too fine for a primer which you more likely would want to lay down thick.
    To get around this, I used 2k thinners to thin the paint down quite a bit and ensure it passed through the spraygun at the right consistency.
    Before I could spray I masked the car up to prevent getting overspray everywhere, I used some poly masking sheets and plenty of tape to do that which went well.
    Mixing the Novol Epoxy Primer is quite simple, it's 2 parts primer to 1 part hardener, and then add 2k thinners to get the consistency about right, in my case quite runny as I was using the 0.8mm spray gun. As a quick extra note, always make sure you're wearing the appropriate PPE painting mask when working with 2k paints. It really is bad for your lungs if you don't.
    I mixed up 300ml of primer which turned out to be the perfect amount to get full coverage in the engine bay, it's rare that you don't come up short or throw some away. Once the paint was mixed correctly, I poured it into the gun and sprayed a test card outside to set the gup up correctly at about 2 bar of pressure from the compressor.
    With that done, start with an inconspicuous area and begin spraying carefully. Avoid lingering on an area and getting runs, but also avoid missing bits and under spraying areas which end up drying rough to the touch.
    I worked my way around the whole engine bay for two coats and ended up with a brilliant result, without any runs or missed parts. I even got that front support sprayed up nicely too outside.
    There are a few bits in the finish, but knowing I'll need to flat it smooth before a colour basecoat anyway, at this stage that's no problem at all.

    The epoxy VOC passes through mask easily. That's why supplied air respirators are recommended by many manufacturers. They are expensive but you can make your own setup and connect it to a full face mask such as 3M 6800 series. That protects your face/eyes too and you cover the rest of your skin appropriatly with something like a tyvec suit

      Interesting idea, I will look into that, might be a worthwhile investment if we do more painting in the future.
      Up to now its a fairly rare occurrence so haven't been super motivated to get fully kitted out. From my understanding these painting masks do a pretty decent job for most painting.

    I would personally paint the car in the factory color. Regardless of what color you choose a great idea would be to use good quality paint and paint gun so you don't end up with a poor finish or have your paint deteriorate 5 years later (low quality paint tends to fade and crack).

    • @SPANNERRASH
      @SPANNERRASH  ปีที่แล้ว

      The original Titian Red would no doubt be the most intelligent choice, but I'm tempted by something a bit more interesting while I have the chance! 😃
      Thanks for the heads up on that, I'll make sure I pick up quality paints when it comes to the final finish. A new gun is on the cards too I think, I'll have to see what I can afford as they are not cheap to buy for a DIYer like myself.

    Looking very good, - it's obviously down to the skill of the masking expert 😀. Two questions please: were you able to check before spraying that the epoxy primer you used was compatible with the primers already on the areas you sprayed, and, secondly, how many times did you have to replenish the spray gun - I don't know the capacity of the Sealey item. Colour: I just love dark metallic blue, but I'm sure that it will look good whatever you opt for and car colours are very much a matter for individual preference of the owner. Thanks and best wishes.

    • @SPANNERRASH
      @SPANNERRASH  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you George, and he does know good a trick or two when it comes to masking! 😂 Great question regarding paint compatibility. To be honest, I've recently discovered that spraying epoxy primer directly onto etch primer can be a bad idea as the acids in the etch can cause a paint reaction with the epoxy. It's recommended to go directly to bare metal with 2k epoxy, but its perfectly happy to go over previous paint finishes that are well sanded down and keyed to accept a new coat. It's bloody remarkable stuff to be honest.
      I haven't had issues before, but I was glad to find out about potential issues with etch. With that in mind, I really took down the Upol etch primer I'd put on in areas with sand paper. I also knew the etch primer had been on for a good while so any acids had diminished. I'm pleased to report there are no issues so far and it's fully cured now. As for the zinc primer which is under in some areas, its very inert stuff that so I'm less concerned.
      To be honest, I had to top up the patching gun quite a few times. I didn't count but probably 5-6 times ish. I do like to avoid brimming the pot though as it tends to start pouring out of the breather, down the gun and over your hand - which is really annoying! 😏
      Thanks for the suggestion of dark metallic blue, seems most people are voting blue right now. It's quite tempting as I've got very find memories of a Lazur Blau E30 318is I had years back. Cheers! 👍

  • @bobfrankish8883
    @bobfrankish8883 ปีที่แล้ว

    Looking good now mate. Just a quick tip, all the epoxy primers I have used to date have a special thinner, totally different chemical to normal 2K thinner. Don't know whether it will cause any issues further down the line, but if you use any more of the Novol product, which is excellent by the way, it would be best to get some of their epoxy thinners to go with it. I know how you feel about the final colour, it is always tempting to do a colour change when the car is stripped as far as yours. Is it Zinnober red originally? I have an E46 in Imola, it looks great in bright sunshine but a bit drab when it is cloudy. Anyway, you have great attention to detail so it will turn out great I'm sure.

    • @SPANNERRASH
      @SPANNERRASH  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Bob, appreciate the heads up about the thinner I used too! I wasn't aware it was a totally different chemical, but I did know it wasn't quite the right one for this. At least I didn't use gun wash, right? 😆
      I think I've got away with it this time, so far so good. It seems to have cured beautifully and appears ready to sand.
      I'll make sure I use the right products together when it comes to base and clear, don't worry.
      You're absolutely right, it's not every day you get to paint a car in any colour you like - it's quite an overwhelming decision really as there are so many colours I like!
      It's originally Titian Red (Tizianrot), a very dark flat red. I also have an E46 in Imola Red, and Titian Red seems really drab and dull compared to that.
      I think if I was putting this car back to anything like standard I'd be motivated to keep it the original colour.
      But as I'm going to be making it my own "restomod" type thing, I think picking a new colour that I love is the way to go. But we'll see, my mind is all over the place about it currently. 😅

  • @darkfactory8082
    @darkfactory8082 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Excelent job. Now the engine bay looks at least clean, since you have the rest masked, it's wise to unify operations that can be done at the same time - colorize... 😉 Well, the choice is almost infinite, be sure to paint with some compound that reflects enough light with the specific wavelenght for the eyes to recognize. You certainly don't want it transparent or disaster will come early. Can you imagine having a glass car? 😂There would be an accident really quickly.
    Choose wisely the color, as it's going to be probably the same for exteriors. I would say not to white, not too black. One gets dirty fast, the other sucks in a lot of sun heat. The choice is your preference. Take a picture of the car and then (if you have photoshop) try some colors to see.. It might help. Cheers, once you get in the inspiration and start going, never stop!
