This lesson literally changed my game. I’ve been playing for about a year and a half now and struggled hitting my irons consistent. I tend to chunk a lot of them too. What you said about comparing it to a baseball swing was the perfect analogy for it to click in my head on how to shallow the club. Went to the range today and flushed all of my irons for the first time ever. Thank bro I really appreciate the lesson!
I’m a year in and I think I’ve just had the same epiphany. Need to go to the range asap
I'm hoping to try this. I'm topping alot and hope this with help me...
@@octoberskye28 any updates?
@@octoberskye28 stack n tilt. It's a game changer. Don't knock it unless you try it.
@@canefan17 how do you do stack and tilt? Does your take away weight should be on the left?
Unlike many golf instructors on TH-cam, you get straight to the point without endlessly elaborating. You simply tell how to do it. A relief. please continue in the same way.
Thanks for video Grant. Im 53 and my 7 iron average is 145 - 150. After watching this video I went to range and implemented your advice on hip turn and and shallowning my swing...I gained almost 20 yards. I was hitting 7 iron from 160 to 170. Just need to practice and get more consistency. Videos are awesome, keep it up.
Dude, You literally just fixed my game. I have been playing on and off for 10 years. I have struggled the entire time with making good connection. Its 11:15 at night, and I had to go try this. I just went and pured 8 shots into my pasture. I am at a loss for words. Thank you so much.
Grant,
Loved labs but man, i have to tell you this episode made so much sense. absolutely my move and you explained everything so well. love the emphasis on terminology. we all seeing you getting better at coaching and explaining the golf swing. you are going to be a great instructor, so personable and humble.
more detail on the correct muscle groups associated with the movements please! keep it up!
I agree! knowing the biomechanics of what I'm trying to do always help me break it down into simpler thoughts.
Also agree that Grant is awesome.
Not much for leaving comments but this is definitely one of your best teaching videos so far. Communicated perfectly …and your passion for teaching comes through which really connects with people.
I’ve been trying to shallow my swing thru 2 instructors and countless videos. I get it now.
I played great golf this summer but my swing had flaws and was exposed regularly to prevent me from scoring my best. I hit rock bottom last week and lost my swing. I went to the range today and am back on track.
I’m Subbing and liking all your vids. Fine work sir!!
Of all the instructions out there on "shallowing," this one is by far the best! Thank you. I can't wait to try it.
It's time for me to give a shout-out to our guy, Grant. I've been working hard on my game over the past 15 months. Took some lessons from a pro for the first time in my 40+ years of dabbling with this game and learned some useful things. I spend a lot of time at the range and have some pretty good days at the range and some not so good ones, but overall I feel like I've been making progress. However, hitting fat, especially with my short irons, has been my nemesis and I haven't been able to completely shake it. After watching this video last night, I went to the range this afternoon with some additional thoughts on shallowing the club, in particular the position I'm in at the top and how I proceed into my downswing. And wow, I honestly can't remember having a better range session, especially with the irons. Only fatted a couple of them (and not that bad) and only a few thins (and those weren't that bad either). Just felt like I was in complete command of my irons and it felt awesome.
Sometimes it's just one simple thing that ends up being the missing link and I think this one might be it for me. Thanks again, Grant, for what you're doing here. You've got a great gift for golf swing instruction!
This 8 minute video just saved me $100 in lessons to get my swing back for 2022. Thank you, young man.
I've been playing golf for years, by no means am I a new golfer but I've recently developed a slice. After a trip to the range and filming my swing, I noticed I no longer shallow out my down swing for some reason. This video helped me figure that out. Thanks Grant.
I've been studying how to shallow the club for 10 years at least and have never heard it instructed so well. Thank you for the tips! Gave been pulling my hands down for so long.
This has to be one of the best shallowing of the club content out there. I have watched this several times over throughout the last several months and still glean more information. Great content.
Thank you, thank you, thank you
It all finally clicks. Hours on the range, trying to figure out why I’m not hitting the ball the way I expect to finally explained. Love you guys. Great seeing your interactions. It’s evident you guys love this game.
Absolutely brilliant. This simple explanation made more sense to me then 5 lessons with a golf coach. Your previous video with Matts swing already got me hitting to ball more consistent. PLEASE keep these videos coming
You hit my head on the nail at 3:57 - The first thing I noticed on the shallow example was how much body rotation he's getting, whereas Phil is getting that rotation in his wrists, requiring better timing. At my age the amount of leg, hip, & back rotation for the shallow swing is nearly impossible for more than 2-3 swings (then ima need a stretcher lol). These vids, along with Danny Maude have helped me find a balance which you get into after about 4:00. Thanks for the vid, kid! I'm really enjoying all the GM & GG content!!! Keep it coming!
Edit: Second half of this video is gold! Grant doesn't say it, but letting the body lead from the top of the backswing adds power & distance, too - much the same way the "step" gives baseball hitter their power.
Grant. I really appreciate your videos as well as all of the other GG videos. Please keep up the good work.
I've applied the advice from this lesson and the one you gave to the fan you guys ran in to at the range. The difference it's made in my irons is like night and day. I've been STRUGGLING to hit my irons clean and consistent the entire time I've been playing golf (going on 3 years of playing regularly). My last two times out I've broken a hundred and nearly broken 90. I usually land around 103-111. Can't say enough about your ability to explain the technical aspects of the game in a way that clicks with folks. Just want to say thank you and let you know you guys are definitely making a difference!!!!
Been golfing for 7 years decent golfer I shoot about 85-90 every season I find myself hitting really well and then not so well your explanation of shallowing the swing with how your leading arm comes across your chest literally fixed my swing I went to the range after and my swing was night and day better I was in disbelief. Thanks so much
I think this was one of your best videos. Had to go to my swing to compare and contrast right away. Keep it going!
Some of the best golf instruction content out there. Easy to understand, simple to follow and implement. Kudos Grant - love the vids. Keep up the good work!
I have watched two videos of yours that have given me the proper direction to practice: wrist angle and club shallowing. I hit a 7 iron about 175, but I KNOW I'm coming over the top because my fairway ball mark points at least 20˚ right of the target (I'm a lefty) every single time, and the marks on the sole of my irons indicate contact is open by about that same degree (I'm not squaring the face...ever). I've lost my ability to create a draw as I've aged, and - other than the usual 55 yr old stiffness and shoulder injury - I've just figured out why: my lead wrist is ALL wrong, and I'm not shallowing.
Now I know what to practice. Thanks a bunch, Grant: well done.
Best demonstration and explanation of steep va shallow I have seen on TH-cam.
I have been golfing for decades, have been as low as a 4. Still enjoy the game. Must say, you are onto something, the best coaching as far as communicating I have seen. Will continue to enjoy your videos.
was able to watch this video last night and took it to the range this morning. Tomorrow will be the on-course test, but the shallowing of the club led me to what can best be described as an effortless swing with the ball simply jumping off of the face. I'm still in recovery mode after rotator cuff surgery so distance has been a concern. The lesson here, matched with a lesson from my teaching pro, seems to add distance without any additional effort on my part. Thanks!
Thanks so much for the great explanation on how to shallow the club! Have been playing golf for over 50 years and this tip has changed the way I swing for the better. Been watching on Facebook a few guys that claim to have the solution but after watching the video for 30 minutes still no information. Grateful for your help!
I’ve added 4 videos to my favorites. I went to range after th Grant and Bubbie videos with a new Ping driver. I was hitting it 30 yards further but it wasn’t the club. I pulled out the old driver and still had added 20-25 yards. It’s not the club but the technique and you proved that with me. The video with Maddie as a new golfer convinced me you know your stuff.
Have been struggling with this for over a year. Switching up my wrists and thinking of letting my hands stay up for just a moment really helped my game. Thank you!!
Good instruction. I'm a new golfer and struggle with consistent contact, but I'm putting in the work to get better and develop a rotational swing. This is an excellent lesson on that front.
Coming back to this video after hitting the course with it. This video changed my swing. I was a slicer my whole life and eventually converted it to a fade over time but now im hitting draws off the tee and added probably 15 yards of distance
Love your ability to teach. Many pros can’t convey technique, you have a gift.
I think this is the best Labs video so far. You really hit a major point but made it easy enough to follow and taught it well. I look forward to more of these types to help with my game.
Very good detailed instruction. I have watched a lot of videos on how to shallow the club but yours brought it home. As of today I watched three of your videos and each one of them are excellent. Great job!
Grant keep up the great work with these tips!!
3 months ago I was hitting 7i about 145-150 and couldn't hit a draw with my irons to save my life. Today I was hitting my 7i 185 😱 with slight draw and when I blocked it I wouldn't lose a massive amount of distance.
Thanks man! Keep up the good work!
That's where I'm at with my 7 iron and I can't figure out how to get distance. What change helped you?
I've never heard it explained with the handle end like this, excellent tip, this helped me get the feel down and making better contact.
Great instruction. You really make it easy to understand shaft lean. What I found that I started sitting down somewhere in between Jason Day and Keegan setup and this automated my shaft lean. Wow what a difference. Thank you
This is probably the most organic and east to follow example of "shallowing" the club I've seen. Most training videos I've seen kind of skip over exactly what shallowing even means. Excellent explanation. Running to range now! 🏌♂️
That's a GREAT videos Grant. I worked for literally 6 months on that because I'd played so long being over the top retraining the muscle memory was difficult. Unlike Phil, I delofted my irons & just took the club back closed so I never had to flip at impact. I made the change so I could control spin. Pay attention young ppl, G knows what he's talking about. 😊
I never coment, but its insane how this lesson helped and completely changed my swing from fade to a nice draw after one range session.. crazy good🎉
You're the man, Grant. Love the labs channel. Great instruction
Grant, between this vid and the bowed wrist one, i am ITCHING to be able to put some of this into practice. You explanations are just so good. Keep up the great work!
I have struggled with iron play for the last year since a long layoff. I can't even express how helpful this was! Thanks for this.
Excellent explanation of vertical vs shallow, this will help me build my own swing. You should have your own teaching Podcast for beginners & seniors. You explain & demo things about golf in simple down to earth terms.
Dude, this video single handedly changed my iron game. Went to the range and implemented this technique and immediately saw improved accuracy and distance. Thank you so much!
Love this video! An idea would be how to use the legs to generate force. Like squat turn and rotate smoothly.
Absolutely excellent Grant, you are thoughtful and articulate … a very good instructor. I am 61 and just getting back to playing this year after 7 years off. I use to shoot low seventies to mid eighties and could hit the 5 iron 200+and drive 300+. Coming back to the game I’ve lost a ton of distance. What you call shallow and steep we called swing plane. Your explanation here makes so much more sense. I like how you stressed that hip turn starting the the downward swing. I know this to be true but I’m having some timing issues with that, especially on the course where as at the range it is easier to find. I think I get steep and out of sequence on the course causing fast shots which is why 6 to 8 pars and a birdie or two is still equating to 88 and 89’s (I have had an 81 and 82).
I hope all that rambling helps you understand what type of instruction would help me. Some ideas might be, hip rotation, taking good divots after the ball, and even some stretching exercises.
Thanks again for all the videos you guys do. You and Garrett have incredible chemistry, awesome to watch.
Grant! This is so good! I struggle so much with this in my game, so I really need this. Prob next time leave a couple of on-range-drills that we mortals can do! Thanks!
This is good. The visual examples of steep and shallow swings using pga pros was great and easy to understand
Grant is the best golf coach on the platform. Period.
The way you described why phil’s swing is so hard to replicate really helped things click in my head. I naturally have a bad slice because my swing resembled a steep swing and i cant figure out how to get my hands to turn while still hitting flush. Shallowing the club helps to get around this issue. Just shallow and turn your hips. Thanks!
Hey guys your videos has made it easier to learn and play golf I went out for the the first time this weekend and had a blast . Can’t wait to get back out there
I love the correlation to a baseball swing to help shallow it out. I think thatll help a lot of people. Good Job Grant.
Very late, but this episode has completely changed my golfing game. before now I was never ever able to hit a draw. Now my shots are so much more consistent, baby draws perfect trajectory to my standards. Can not thank Good Good enough 🤝🤝🤝
Thanks Grant that’s super helpful! When you were speaking about being shallow before my assumption went to how the club was striking the ball not the swing plane. This makes so much more sense.
Awesome stuff Grant, continue the GG Labs instructions! Only slight recommendation would be to have less cuts, making it easier to follow what you're saying!
Hands down best labs episode yet. So good, thanks!
Great, easy to understand video. Need the snow to melt here in Montana so I can work on this. Thanks, Grant.
Grant you are very good at describing what we need to do in the videos! Great addition to GoodGood! Keep it up.
What a great explanation of shallowing a club Great job Grant.
I watched 100s of these videos. For some reason this is the one that finally clicked.
Im having such a hard time with my swing. You have one of the best swings I've ever seen. I wish I could afford to take a lesson from you. Thanks for the content!
Thanks much Grant! I average 95-105 usually. Did a lot of contemplation on my swing recently and pile of watching GG Labs videos. Took all that out to course last weekend and shot a 84. Swing feels sustainable and I’m ready to challenge ya!!😅
Good video grant! Important thing here as you said is the backswing as it starts the downswing. Also note that the grip dictates the release and positions. You wouldn’t shallow with a weak grip as you will be hitting push cuts all day!
All these videos are very helpful. I’ve been golfing for a year and still having trouble with how far I need to stand back with clubs. I’m 6’2” and just go by what I feel is comfortable but still hit the ball with the heel or toe of the clubs
Great advice and maybe the best training I have seen to shallow my swing.. Thanks Grant Horvat
Great video Grant the way you describe golf and make it relatable is a gift
Best episode yet, grant your a legend. Gave me a eureka moment
This is gold. My irons are so inconsistent. I compare my swing to phils and wow. I also have a really steep swing but I don't rotate my hands at all to square the club face.
Loved the baseball analogy. I played for years and taught hittin gas well.... great explanation overall....
I love the Labs series. If you do not already can you make one on short game pitching and chipping with explaining ball spin, flop shots, down/up hill lies (all from 50yrds and in). That would be epic!
First of all, thanks for these lessons. I've learned so much from them. I just realized I wasn't swallowing the club. My question: is it better to shallow right before the top of the backswing or should I shallow it on the downswing?
I found one of the secret golf to have the right swing from this video. You fix my problems. Thanks alot
I've always tried to emulate Phils swing. I would let my club head drop down to start my downswing to make it easier. your vid has helped a lot lol. thanks
this is exactly what I need! Would love a video like this on launch angles and dynamic lofts through the bag (wedges, irons, driver)
Really enjoy these Grant. How about a vid on how to flight down wedge shots.
Thanks for this one Grant. Been getting really steep with my wedges lately and hitting alot of them fat. This makes perfect sense.
Going to work on this today and tomorrow.
It looks so simple and it's so logical...if only executing what we want to do was that easy. Golf is hands down the most difficult and challenging sport I've ever played which is what makes me love it so much. I played college football for a national championship team and in terms of difficulty football is so much easier.
Bro had to tell us he played college football
Brilliant Grant!
Thanks especially for the first 4 minutes. Teachers often overlook that part for efficiency. But it is important to establish the framework for What and Why, before getting into the How. It helps us understand and stay motivated through the changes.
Kudos!
Grant, saving this one for sure. Gonna show my wife and try a baseball drill. With your help I'm going to get in the 80s this year
Love the baseball suggestion....makes so much sense. Great video
For the last few months I've been really concentrating on shallowing the club in my downswing. I have to think about it during the swing. But I've been way more consistent now. I used to be really steep. I also hit more draws now when I only used to hit fades. It has made golf way more fun for me.
I've been super steep for years, never seen anyone explain it as well as Grant, The Mechanic. Definitely going to try that baseball drill, thanks!
Wow Grant, thanks so much. This is something to really chew on. I know I have struggled with this a lot. One of my struggles has always been not going ahead of the ball with my head on the downswing. So I would have a tendency to do that or I would end up on my back foot instead of my front. This often happened because I was trying to keep my head behind the ball. How do you shallow out and still keep your head in the correct position yet maintain good balance?
OMG… I’ve been struggling with trying ti shallow the club. The baseball swing analogy was perfect. Thank you so much.
I’ve been a good ball striker for a few years but have struggled shallowing the club, the idea of the left arm across the body instead of high hands is really hitting home with me. Huge fix I need to make is that. I’m ready to hit the range!!
Maybe a video on some of the other equipment surrounding golf. What to consider when buying balls. What to look for in buying gloves. What to look for and how to use a range finder. Considerations for tees like material and appropriate height and placement. Could also do a video on basic rules and etiquette.
I need this, coming in too steep. I also get to loose at stop and over swing. Hopefully laying off will help me get into a better position and give me less work to do on the down swing. Thanks Grant.
The baseball analogy made it click, thank you for that visual
This is great information and I really like the baseball swing analogy. Do you recommend keeping the hands lower in the Driver back swing?
Whole time I thought Grant was baked and a good golfer bc his pops. This was actually one of the most helpful videos I’ve ever seen and understood. Ayo My fault G 😭😂
I have been a slicer my whole life. This season I have worked on getting shallow and Ive had some awesome results with my 5-9 Irons My hybrids and Long iron are turning into MONSTER Hooks though and not the classic Pull Hook. I am talking 150 yds straight down the fairway and then turning 25 to 50 yds to the left. This would be a great video!
Best video on TH-cam on this. Thank you!!!
Great tips! I’m a simple person, so explaining it “simple/stupid” works best for me lol.
Great instruction Grant. Not sure if you will get this or not since you GG guys are so busy and this is later in the year from this posting, but is there a method similar to this for a senior golfer who cannot quite get back far enough to affect the drop at the top of the back swing. It seem to me this shallow swing creates far less stress on the back, hips and shoulders and would help many over 60 golfers with ball contact and length. Hope to hear from you regarding this or seeing a GGL video for we graying folks.
Awesome video and really well explained. Not heard the baseball tip, so will give that a go
I think the points are great Grant. I taught a lot of tennis and use a lot of the same techniques learning golf. What do you think of just showing more slow motion of your swing during explanation. Really focusing on breaking down and explaining the movements. I’m watching a lot of your explanations and they go quick and are info packed. What do you think of simplifying some of it
Great vid G. I’ve been trying these feels for awhile now and get stuck with the depth piece in the backswing whereby my hands get behind me and not sure how to get them in front of me to compress the ball. The baseball swing is a good analogy but man after being steep for so long it feels like I’m gonna miss the ball. Thanks for the great vid!
Omg THANK YOU. I will never forget that baseball swing analogy as long as I live.
I haven’t even tried this but I can already tell it’ll help. Thanks brotha
Hey grant. If I’m getting fitted this week and my swing is decent, do you think I’ll have to get fitted again once I really dial in my swing how It needs to be? I’ve Heard my swing is good to work with but might need some tweaks. I just don’t wanna have to go get fitted again after I fix my swing with new clubs
The clubs are going to be more about the speed and tempo than anything else. The shafts will be the most important piece to get right. There are so many good club heads out now, that you can take your pick on feel. Swing changes should still be compatible with your new clubs. I would recommend getting a set of forged irons. There are plenty of forgiving options, but forged clubs give you the ability to get them bent and adjusted to your exact swing if they even need adjusting after you're working on your swing.
