Very interesting! I wonder how similar knäckebröd is to hard tack/ship’s biscuit, a very dry and hard cracker or biscuit eaten by sailors in the 18th century. It’s not very tasty but the lack of moisture preserves it for a long time.
Good question! I do not know the answer, but they are similar in that they are both hard, not very flavorful and fulfilled the most basic need for food.

Knækbrød looks a lot like jewish matzah, but is crisper (and tastier, if you ask me). I imagine ship's biscuit much more dense.
