    Today I went to a Yamaha event in my town,tried the BOLT basic entry model (basic rear shocks, no ABS, basic seat).
    Ran straight to the closest HD dealership and tried the IRON 883 to compare:
    At the end of the day I bought the BOLT.
    My reasons:
    - Power delivery on the bolt is fantastic, that torque!
    - Sound: the BOLT sound sharper and louder in my ears.
    - the gear box is easy, light and precise.
    - Suspensions, I read many reviews of people complaining about the BOLT hard suspensions, I am about 190 pound and I did not experience any disconffort as opposed to the big guys in the other videos on TH-cam.
    - Heavy but actually light, super agile at low speed. (my previous bike was a Ducati 999)
    - Riding position just spot on !
    - Price
    My reasons why I did not choose the HD:
    - The clutch would never let me find neutral (I spent the whole 30 minutes of the test drive without behing able to release the clutch). Explanation given by HD: it is easier put in neutral while stopping the bike and not after coming to a complete stop. Explanation 2: all HDs need 300kms to get used to...
    - the seat was terribly hard (harder than the bolt).
    - Braking is too mild, and lack response to my taste (maybe because the bike was new?)
    - Suspension much too soft at the front. If you combine the soft braking and the suspension you have to anticipate a lot on your braking when reaching more than 40mph.
    - Lack of power but it is unfair given that it is 80cc less than the BOLT.
    - No rear seat nor rear foot rest as standard ...
    - where I live they sell the HD 2500USD more than the bolt with rear seat incl.
    The subjective part:
    - The looks of the HD is of course better but high price + less comfort = less riding pleasure.
    - The BOLT looks OK, I found the Mat Grey not bad at all. You completely forget about the look when actually riding the bike.
    Oh I forgot to mention that initially I was on the market for a Honda CB 1300SF or a Monster 1000.

      Good comment :) I've had the exact same experience when testing the two. I'm NOT gonna buy a HD just so I can say "I have a HD *brag brag* ." I'm going for the bike that feels right, and is better on the most important aspects! Isn't that basically just logic/common sense? Liked the HD too, by all means, but still I liked the Bolt better. And if some HD fanboys wants to look down on me when I come riding on my Bolt, then well, I couldn't care less :) Fucking highschool mentality, grow up.

      It isn't unfair to compare their power just because of 80cc's. Horsepower is more important for that.

  • @HomeBudgetComputing

    Bolt vs 883 comparison? Hardly! This was a Bolt commercial pure and simple. Don't call something a comparison when you are so obviously just trying to sell one of the products.

  • @MikaelGotlib
    @MikaelGotlib 10 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    I've got a 883 and I must say that all the things they pointed out with the HD are true, it's pretty slow, it has shit suspension, ground clearance is rubbish, it vibrates when your get above...well I'd say 80km. All those things considered I'd NEVER swap it for a Bolt. I used to own a Yamaha, great bike, but it was in a category that Yamaha owned (or at least weren't just imitating), if you want a bobber there is only one brand, sorry Yamaha, riding a Harley is not about 0-100, or comfortable suspension, it's a life style.

      very true i agree with you...its a lifestyle

    • @rdsii64
      @rdsii64 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I must disagree, riding a motorcycle is a life style. What brand you choose is simply a matter of preference. The folks at HD that were smart enough to market the HD as a life style choice made a master stroke of pure genius. You willfully admit the sportster is the inferior machine yet you choose to keep it as a "lifestyle" choice. Nothing wrong with that choice at all. It is what it is.
      As much as I love the mystique and street cred that comes with owning an HD, I'll pick the technically superior bike that offers a better ride, and better maneuverability every time.

    • @MikaelGotlib
      @MikaelGotlib 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      rdsii64 Sure, agree it's a life style riding a bike in general but you can't get away from the fact that the bolt is a Japanese imitation of the Sportster, and as you point out whilst the Harley got street cred the bolt doesn't. My point is however that I'd happily buy a R1 or a MT-09 or a FZ, because those bikes are all Yamaha's own models....not some rip off copies. I think Yamaha can do better then making a copy of the Harley.

    • @rdsii64
      @rdsii64 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Mikael Gotlib Is the Bolt a blatant copy of the 883's style? Sure it is! No one with a brain will argue with that. Hell Yamaha doesn't even try to hide that fact. Right or wrong, thats how they play the game in the big leagues. Honda pulled the same stunt with the Fury by building a "factory chopper" with a bullet proof engine and the best warrantee any "chopper" ever had. Every Japanese motorcycle company has a copy of the fatboy. The rub is that while they are BLATANT copies, they are technically superior motorcycles. If I were into that style of bike I would take a Roadstar 1700 over the HD Yamaha copied any day. Copy or not, ITS A BETTER BIKE. If HD made better bikes instead of pedeling a "life style" (which is marketing genius by the way) these blatant copies would not sell as well as they do. HD is partly to blame for creating the copy cat market. Instead of creating cutting edge superior machines, They created "the biker mystic". The rest of the motorcycling companies are turning that mystic into profits with copy cat bikes that are built better. Ever wonder why Yamaha also has a star cycles clothing line and a club similar to the Harley owners group. The copy cat machine at its finest, and the board of directors are laughing all the way to the bank.

    Yeah, it is a nice copy of the Sportster. Except the digital speedo that looks totally out of place, the goofy looking flange around the gas tank that looks unfinished, and the front of the frame looks like an afterthought to get around the front exhaust pipe. I do like the 2 into 1 exhaust. I would expect a bike with larger displacement to be quicker, especially with a little less weight.
    It is a decent looking copy, but I if had to choose, as an American, I would buy American instead of sending my money overseas... especially since the price of both bikes is equal. Why buy a copy when you can have the original?
    But to each their own, if you like the Bolt, buy a Bolt. It would be a boring world if we all had the same bike. So long as your riding, I say it doesn't matter what you ride.

    As a long long time metric rider, kawasaki's and honda's I've really wanted to get back to a small fun bike like my old vulcan 800a, on a VTX1800c these days, Have been between the harley forty eight and someone brought up the bolt I figured I'd give it a look, after seeing this Video posted by yamaha I can tell you I'm sold.... sold on getting the forty eight nothing like making a video saying your bike is the bomb.

    There's a lot I like about the bolt. However I still don't understand why they're still using that glossy digital readout 3 years after its initial release when so many people have complained about it being unreadable.
    I think the Iron's design is more polished and my guess is there's more options for modification. But I could definitely see why so many people would choose the Bolt over it.

    • @whiskeyjack9767
      @whiskeyjack9767 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The digital read-out takes away from the bike, I will give you that. But it is honestly not as bad as you've heard. People like to complain. The bike is tight, fast and loads of torque. As for options, they are endless.

    The Bolt is a LookAlike... The Sportster is a timeless classic, the Bolt is just another good bike from Yamaha. Performance wise, with 52 Hp I wouldn't mention it that often. You people build the R1,that's a performance machine. The Bolt is just a good cruiser with a disastruos resale value, at leat here in Germany.

    I think the bolt looks interesting and appealing in the way that other metric bikes intrigue me, they just have so many bits and pieces that you don't find on HD's. That being said, it's kind of funny to me that the Bolt relies of the iconic design of the Sportster to prop itself up. If Yamaha is so forward thinking why emulate the core design of the sporty? Why do any other companies emulate the look? Because Harelys invoke emotion out of people whether they like it or not. Good or bad, people "feel" a certain way about Harleys, that I don't think they feel when looking at a Kawasaki Vulcan or a Vstar for example. I'm not saying the Bolt isn't a good bike by any means, they're more affordable, maintenance isn't ridiculous if you take it to a dealer, they've got progressive technology. I quite like it but I think Harleys will always means something different to the people that ride them. For better or for worse, there's nothing like an Harley.

      Joseph Soriano Same way people will forever copy the shape of Fender guitars. Manufacturers use Fender's base aesthetics of Stratocaster or Telecaster guitars to sell a product that is "better built" than the original or with "better electronics" or just plain cheaper to sell a product on the back of something truly iconic. From another direction, how many sunglasses look like Rayban Aviators? Going from those on cheap sea-side beach stores to high end sunglasses? You can pay peanuts or a small fortune, but there is nothing that replaces the original, classic design.

    Tell me, please, if the people at Yamaha had time to study the Iron, then why is it so horribly designed where looks are concerned? If the Bolt had a goodlooking exhaust, a goodlooking airfilter, no engine sticking out from underneath the tank, no unsightly gap between the tank and the seat and a meter i can read, then i'd surely choose the Bolt over the Iron. The relatively small difference in engine performance doesn't compensate for those terribly looking parts imo. Really, how hard can it be to have a decent stock exhaust and airfilter?

      Runeguy33 The problem is that HD doesn't need to do anything, which is unfortunate because they have the money and skill to build something truly amazing. There are too many fanboys and girls out there who will buy for the name and name alone. Watch the shootouts. There is always at least one reviewer who says, " The other bike(s) are better, but I'm going with the Harley." These two bikes were on the list of three that I was considering. I went with the Vulcan S ABS with no regrets. But, it was a tough decision between it and the Bolt. Ultimately, it came down to fit and comfort. The Vulcan felt way better in the saddle, and it has a few more niceties for almost a grand less. The Harley was out of the picture after sixty seconds on the road.

      daver787 I am right there with u. also, the Vulcan s abs is liquid cooled....no brainer on hot days. as a rider under 5'7 the adjustable fitment helped the kaw as well. still....if I were to have a second bike it would be the bolt.

    I've had a Sportster for the last 6 years and just for grins I took a demo ride on a new Star Bolt. As a result, all I've got to say is that Harley had better get back to the drawing board and start improving the Sportster. I found the Bolt to be smoother and quicker and had a more "solid" feel than the Sporty. If I were in the market for a small V-Twin cruiser, the Bolt would be my first pick.

    I ride a sportster, been riding metrics for 30 years, not a metric hater, the Bolt is a fine bike but fit and finish goes to the Sportster, He forgot to mention that tank seam around the bolt tank that was borrowed from the old yamaha radian, for better or worse, there is no plastic on the sportster, yes it adds weight but bikes covered with plastichrome or plastiblack parts will not become classics, my 2 cents.

Nothing could've prepared me for the adrenaline rush of gears 1-3 on the 1200 Sportster!! It's rude, crude, loud, rough around the edges and reminds one of a 'Stones concert! There's no suspension at all. Spend some $ on a suspension upgrade and the Sportster 1200 is a fun rocket ship.

    i have ridden my brothers iron 883 and I just bought a bolt. the only thing i liked about the HD was the sound. his HD did not break well at all and leaning in corners was a challenge. The bolt much better bike. I bought Vance and Hines slip on exhaust and changed the air intake and sounds way better then my brothers bike. in fact asks to ride my bike all the time. HD is losing its hold on the market I mean look what HD came out with. Street 500 and street 750 why to compete with asain markets because there losing money in north America.. Both crappy bikes may I add.

    both are nice, dont really see the point in owning an 883 sportster unless your a bird who cant carry a 1200. have seen the bolt on road in all black with forward controlls which improved the look for me. but like i said, with the weight of these bikes i wouldnt bother with anything smaller than the 1200s, personally.

    • @Databyter

      And there's only one Yamaha.
      The vid is right about one thing. I see Harley drivers shaken to death at stop signs, that might be cool for a while, but I'd rather ride a machine that puts the power into the wheels than into key rattling and hand shaking.
      I like the better clearance too.
      Only one Harley is right, and if that's what floats your boat, basically bragging rights, go for it. A certain group of people will be impressed.
      I'd be more impressed with someone bragging about the Bolt. It shows he or she shopped and ignored the Harley religion and found a superior machine with a similar style and doesn't care what other people think about it, because he/she buys for themselves, not to prove anything to anybody else. Not that there is anything wrong with that. It just doesn't impress me as much as going down a different road for good reasons.

      Databyter Well said :) Too bad many (not all) Harley riders are too stubborn or ignorant to realize that that's what it's supposed to be about; the pure love for riding, and having a bike you're happy with! Because, if it looks awesome, performs awesome, feels awesome, and is also pretty affordable, then that sounds like a great bike to me; regardless of what letters/logos are inscribed on it. The Bolt is a great machine, that also happen to look and feel very sexy ;) Deal with it HD fans. Enjoy your rides people, no matter the brand! :)

    Everything about the bolt is better than the 883. I like Harley's don't get me wrong, but all these people that have their fingers wrapped around Harley because of the name are just rediculous. Can't be open minded enough to give other products a shot. They don't know if they would like it or not. I think most would be surprised how smooth the Bolt really is and how comfortable. Not to mention the engine will run for a very long time.

    yeah, I just commented all in favor of the bolt over the sahdow. But this comparison...
    I'm not feeling it. I'd probably take the Harley - and I ride a Vstar 950. Two reasons I got the Yammy over the Harley : dollars and size. I couldnt even come close to affording the Harley I would have wanted. And the sportster is girl-size small. But even the tall guys who I have met who have the 883 say they love it. Its hard not to prefer a Harley.

    The Truth is the 883 is much worse than the Bolt, overall. That said it doesn't mean the Bolt is Top Notch. Compare to the Vulcan S, the Kawi 650 dusts the Bolt. As for the 883, if I were Harley I would compare that to the Honda Shadow; mentioning Honda's rear wheel "Drum Brake"...

  • @Cybeq
    @Cybeq 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Here's what Yamaha needs to understand: Motorcycles are primarily purchased for recreation, not transportation. If you want transportation then you would be concerned with performance, cornering clearance, suspension travel, etc....But as far as pure recreation goes, all you care about is fun, image, the feeling you get when you ride it, feel it, hear it, look at it. I feel icky when I look at the Bolt. It looks cheap and thrown together, the lines are all wonky, it sounds tinny and wimpy. The Iron looks like sex, it follows a consistent theme, the lines are flowing, it doesn't look cheap, it sounds deep and throaty, I feel excited when I look at it. But hey, the Bolt is "better", there's no arguing that.

    • @highonimmi
      @highonimmi 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      BLC dude, my motorcycle is my primary ride. I cage it only when I have to. people who ride Harleys for the most part do so for recreation and posing. the cost to maintain them negates the every day use of these things. the few who do ride everyday ride the sportsters or dynas.

    • @highonimmi
      @highonimmi 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Runeguy33 that's nice to hear but, the cost of maintenance is atrocious. I was looking at the dyna street bob as a ride a while back. when I talked to the sales person (not one female in the bunch) he said that if I even changed my own oil I will void he warranty. well, fuck you very much. I do my own regular maintenance mostly. damn, that turned out to be too expensive.
      I prefer liquid cooled engines. I am with you...I am curious to see how that 750 fairs as well.

    • @Moistmuscle
      @Moistmuscle 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Runeguy33 Yep the Street would be an amazing utilitarian option if it was cheap and readily available everywhere other than India. The reason it is not widespread, is that they don't want to upset the prestige of Harley owners in moneyed countries through mass ownership but want to place a product within massive developing markets where 2 wheeled transport is still the massive majority. Saying that, I ride every single day and only fresh snow on highway stops me and if any motorcycle manufacturer wants to make a bike you can live on and still feel like you ride a prize horse and not just a trusty mule, it would be most welcomed
