There were so many great engines in the '60s it is hard to pick just 5.
The Chrysler wedges were great; they were tough and made lots of torque and power. The cross-ram 413, 426 Max wedge, even the old 383s were a lot of fun. The small block 340 was an awesome engine with 4 bbl or 6 bbl induction. And, of course, the Elephant of all engines.
Chevy had a number of engines too. The LT1 350. The high horsepower 327s, coming in 350, 365 and 375hp; you can just hear the big cam idle. The various 396s and of course the LS 454s.
Pontiac was right up there with the 455 SD, the early 389 Tri-power, the 326 and even the overhead cam 250 six. HO series, Ram Air series, SD series engines were all great engines.
Olds had their share too. Start with the 330 in the first 442. The 350 w-31 and 455 w-30. The Tornado 425.
Buick wasn't thought of as performance oriented, but made some great performance engines. The 445, 430 and 455 engines were tough and once they started the Stage 1 series, they really made people pay attention. Their small blocks were no slouches either, with the 340 and 350s.
And of course, the most overlooked company, Rambler/AMC. In the mid 60s they had their own 327 that had reasonable performance, but once they changed to the 290/343/390 and then the 304/360/390/401, they really livened things up. Cars like the 390 AMX, the 390 SC/Rambler or Scrambler Rambler as it was nicknamed, and the 390 Rebel Machine. (supposed to be '69, but first produced in 1970)
And as we saw, the Fords had a number of great engines. The 289s, 390, 427 with all the different heads, 428 Police Interceptor, CJ, SCJ, 429, 351 Windsor (which was never really taken to its potential), 302 Boss, 406 and 352.
There were so many great engines, I am sure I missed some. The only question is, which company and engine is your favourite?

I had a Rambler Ambassador station wagon with a 401. I stripped all the smog stuff off and my lead foot wife drove it. She had a lot of fun blowing the doors off young punks who weren't looking out for a woman in a station wagon with two kids in the back.

The street version of the Boss 429 was actually kind of a dog unless you ditched the smog pump and added a bigger carburetor, headers, and a more radical camshaft. Ford really de-tuned the Boss9 quite a bit from the factory. The Boss 302 definitely is not top 5 all time among muscle car engines...but it definitely is top 5 all time among small block muscle car engines though. And the Chevy ZL1 427 is an extremely limited production race engine like the L88 427...not really a street engine. Here's my top 5 all time muscle car street engines but not necessarily in this order:
    1. Chrysler 426 Street Hemi(1966-71)
    2. Ford R-Code 427 Side Oiler(1965-67)
    3. Chevy LS6 454(1970)
    4. Pontiac 455 Super Duty(1973-74)
    5. Chrysler 440 6 BBL/Six Pack(1969-71)
I would've added the Buick 455 Stage 1(1970) with its 510 lb/ft torque rating but didn't only because that engine only used 2 bolt mains and was known for cracking engine blocks in the lifter valleys under high RPM abuse because of very thinwall casting and it was well known for oiling problems too. I also had a hard time excluding the Chevy L78 396 and L72 427 and Pontiac 400 Ram Air IV too
Here's my top 5 small block muscle car engines but not necessarily in this order:
    1. Chevy LT1 350(1970)
    2. Chrysler 340 6 BBL/Six Pack(1970)
    3. Ford BOSS 351(1971)
    4. Chevy 302(1967-69)
    5. Ford BOSS 302(1969-70)
I had a hard time leaving the Chevy L79 327 and Ford K-Code 289 off the list too

the L-88 was not as limited as the ZL-1, but I see your point. The r code 427 was not a high production engine either. I am pretty sure the Chevy 327 was always a 2 bolt main engine, even the fuelie with solid lifters. Still you have some great engines selected and the almost made it engines were pretty damned good too. The youth of today wasting time on vidiot games have no earthly idea what life was like hearing the crackle of uncapped high compression hot cammed engines with headers, was like. Pathetic. You must have known!

It had some wins, but overall it failed to do so & was never installed in a production, street legal car. That it was a good & powerful engine can not be denied, but the production Chrysler Hemi remained the engine to beat both on the track & the drag strip, & it WAS available in a variety of production street legal models for a number of years.

The SOHC NEVER had a victory at NASCAR.
When the SOHC showed up at Daytona in 1964 and ran almost 20 mph faster than the race Hemis. Chrysler went right to NASCAR and told them if the SOHC was able to compete, they were going home.
      NASCAR immediately banned the SOHC.
NO VICTORIES for SOHC because they were not allowed to race.
The race Hemi should have also been banned because ZERO were sold in 1964, and the street Hemi did not come out for two more years, 1966.

Put that on a midnight street run and it will stun you what a 50 year old engine with a blueprint little roller can do, a stock engine that can carry the front wheels 60 ft. Amazing and I helped put it together, legit and spooky as hell! The FE punches way above its weight even now. A guy won EMC with a 400 ci 390 with 64 390 heads and made 596 hp on pump gas. So much incorrect information in this video. Like the 427 side oiler being developed for the Shelby Cobra. The 427 side oiler was a engine developed through trial and error for nascar racing . And the Boss 302 having tunnel port Cleveland style heads is a new one to me. My 69 Boss 302 certainly doesn't have tunnel port Cleveland style heads. It does have heads quite similar to 351 Cleveland heads though.

    • @KB10GL
      @KB10GL 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      No it shouldn't
The video is about "Muscle Car Engines" not Race Car Engines.
The Ford SOHC was created to compete against [& beat] the Chrysler Hemi in NASCAR events. It failed in this endeavour completely. When Bill LaFrance told Chrysler & Ford that he needed to be able to buy either of these engines in a production car off a dealers showroom floor for legal street use or they would not be allowed to use them in NASCAR competition, both manufacturers had a choice. So Chrysler made the Hemi available in a variety of models while Ford tucked its corporate tail between its legs & waved the white flag. The SOHC engine would be available as a race car engine only as a separate purchase item.
It was NEVER installed in a "Muscle" car that the public could buy & legally drive on the street, which is why it shouldn't be, & wasn't, included in this video.
Oh yeah, it's my understanding that the Chrysler Hemi is still available as a crate motor in [I believe] three displacements more than 50 years after it was released to the public in a passenger car. That's how good it is. I don't believe that I can buy even factory supplied spare parts for the Ford SOHC these days, let alone a new crate engine.

BB Chevy Engine wasn't a ZL1 Engine, which is 427ci Aluminum Block / Heads. The engine in the Video is an L71/89 427ci/435hp available only in 67-69 Corvette. OEM L71 had Rectangular Port Cast Iron heads. That engine had the Optional Aluminum closed chamber heads(#3919842) which gives it the L71/89 desigination. Triangular Aircleaner is a give away for the Tripower Carburation which used three Holley 2300 series 2bbl Carbs (also used on L68 BB) ZL1 Engine used a single Holley List 4296 850cfm DPer on a highrise open plenum aluminum intake #3933198 (same as L88)... ZL1 Engine available only in 1969 as an RPO Corvette engine option (2 made) and as a COPO 9560 Camaro ZL1 (69 made) Engine in Video was quite rare as the Aluminum head option was quite expensive ...

I am an avid fan of Fords BBs, as my 1966 F100 has the 352, no matter what displacement, the FEs just simply run forever. The Y block design was a stroke of genius, and made those motors basically indestructible, can handle all the power you want, with no fear of blowing up.

I was going to make a brief comment, but after looking at all the pointed comments I changed my mind.
1st - Thanks for the video. It’s not perfect and considering many of the comments it may be a good idea to make another more comprehensive video.
I was a Ford guy, bought a 70 Boss 302 in 72. Same color, medium metallic blue, as the 69 in the video.
Even though favoring Ford I really appreciate and admire so many engines from GM, Chrysler and even American Motors.
2nd - The Boss 302 was not a tunnel port. Ford did prototype a 302 tunnel port for 68, but it never went into production. It was even listed in the early 68 Mustang sales brochure.
3rd - Even though the small block Chevys were powerful and cheap to hot rod, the poor little Ford 289 is forgotten, even though that was the engine in Carroll Shelby’s world championship AC Cobra coupes.
4th - There is history and interesting stories behind many of the engines mentioned by everyone else. If someone wants to make those videos . . .

Said he got into it with a camero on his way home, camero passed him off first and second but once he hit 3 it was all over for the camero. The dudes in the camero followed him home and asked to see whats under the hood. One of his best friend had a 68 c20 with a 327 and a 3 speed colum shift. Said he had it to 120 and he was only mashed a 3rd of the way into the floor. I'm currently building a 69 c20. Its getting a sbc 350 4 bolt main, thumper cam(ill determine which one I want once I get the heads flow tested), 1.94 camelhump heads, victor junior high rise intake, holley 750 double pumper, hooked competition headers into true dual with either Flowmaster super 10, or cherry bombs. I'm swapping the 700r4( I put that in temporarily because my th400 has shot clutch packs. Only works on reverse and that 2 mph at 5500rpm🤣) anyways, im swapping it for a sm465 equipped with a gear vendors overdrive. I'm converting my diff to posi and keeping the same ratio which is 3.54/1. I'm here cause I'm looking at different motors to eventually swap. My ranger might get the 302.

I had a 67 GTO I rebuilt from a junkyard in 1971. It was in great shape, the engine was blown and cost me $250. When finished about 4 months later this was its config: 389CI with 3/4 cam w/ twin Rochester 4 bbl, Munsey H/D 4 speed with speed shifter, Twin Golden Goose exhaust, L50 rear, L70 front tires, Monroe Air Shocks, and a bunch of other mechanical stuff I cannot remember after half a century. The car got less than 6 miles per gallon but who cared when you could by 4 gallons for a dollar in Tampa. I could boil rubber in 1st, and if not careful, 2nd and 3rd could cause the car to drift a bit. 4th would make the tires bark. I won many 1/4 mile races with it. I sold it the summer before the famous energy crisis of 73. Lucky me.

Don't know where you get the 376 HP from, the 430 HP rating was to keep insurance companies at bay as the ZL1 was truly an all out race engine. I've seen dyno runs on the ZL1 pushing 500-550 HP gross.

@@martinrivera3230 probably a typo, but the Ford cammer saw very little action, because of such low production numbers, and being banned by NASCAR. If and that is a big IF, it would have smoked anything else listed here, at least naturally aspirated. The 421 SD, was Pontiacs last serious race engine, put into production. The bottom end and valve train seemed to be able to handle high revs for extended periods of time. Pontiac did make some awesome street engines afterwards though. Pontiac had a 303 all out tunnel ported hemi head, in development, tested but never released for production or racing. The 9000 redline would have required some unusual warranties, and insurance premiums. The heads supposedly flowed better than the 426 Chrysler Hemi. Not streetable. Driving around, with the rpm range above 4500, to get any torque on the street was, pardon the pun, a no starter.

The Boss 429 gets a lot of attention, but it was an engine designed for NASCAR and successfully used in Torinos and Cyclones. Ford dropped it in the Mustang so it would qualify for use in NASCAR. The Mustang version was detuned plus it was a helluva a lot of weight for that car , so it actually was not a very good performer. Yeah, it's the coolest looking, but not a "top" muscle car engine. Ford's 289 Hi-Po was a totally bullet proof reliable street & track performer (just ask Carroll Shelby) the 427's and 428CJ may also qualify. My personal vote goes to the 351 Cleveland (a baby Boss 429) 'cause I drove the crap out of my '70 Mach 1 with that one, and I won a lot of races on the street and on the dragstrip.

A buddy of mine had one. He thought it was a 390. When it was torn down for a refurbishing, the machinist said there was something odd about the stroke measurement. It wasn't what it was supposed to be for a 390. It turns out that FORD basically did a factory stroker with the 390 by putting a different crank in it. They were strong on the bottom end with really good midrange. Great power for moving a two and a half ton car. Only available in Mercury.

The boss 302 you pictured was not actually a boss but could have been a tunnel port 302 used in the 1968 trans am Mustangs.

  • @wireflight
    @wireflight 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    @ 2:25
The 302 Tunnel Port (which had the described Tunnel Port heads) was NOT the Boss 302, which -- as ALMOST correctly noted -- used heads almost identical to the 335-series ("Cleveland") "4V" heads (the difference was water passages and valve sizes).
As there was no RPO Tunnel Port 302, the nominal Trans-Am Racing Series Mustangs generally competed as Boss 302 CARS for marketing purposes -- which was the same thing the other makes were doing: the race car started as a body-in-white.
    @ 3:30
The 427FE wasn't finicky on the street; rather, (a) Ford had too many versions of it to support: there was the "low riser," the "medium riser," the "high riser," the "tunnel port" and the SOHC (the latter pair being dealer-level and parts program options).
Of the basic trio, different oiling schemes existed, etc.: getting a junkyard 427 is like buying jewelry: if you know what you're doing, you can get a great deal; if you aren't an expert, you can lose your proverbial butt. From a production/profit perspective, the 428 provided 7-liter displacement (an important marketing segment) for much less than the cost of the 427.

Sub contractor for the Boss 429 was Car Craft. Shock towers moved out wards and other modifications were needed to get that elephant in the engine bay. Too bad the 429 cams and carbs had to be modified down to make the motor tractable for the street which killed the potential horse power those huge intake ports could have made. You could almost put your fist in them.

If we're talking the best racing street/track muscle car engine and you could only pick one it is not debatable. Chrysler 426 dual quad hemi. It changed performance forever. By far the single most dominant race engine of all time, it was so good in the 64-65 seasons, it made a mockery of the competition, Nascar wanted to ban it because Ford and GM claimed it a was a hand built custom race motor, So Chrysler released the minimum amount to the public starting in the 1966 season to make it a "production" engine available to all, at the time I believe it was 2 per every Plymouth and dodge dealership. Aka (homologation). But no engine ever came close to the winning record of the hemì. The earlier models of the 413 and 426 max wedges were quite good too, and Def more rare and valuable today....... now if we're talking small blocks I'd have to say the Chrysler 340 was a fire breathing monster, capable of taking down many big blocks...... just my opinion

  • @thegreenerthemeaner

    1) Boss9 came with valve springs that limited Rpms to about 5000. Having to modify the lightest platform in 1969 was another issue. You couldn't swap the straight 6 out and a Biss9 into your 65 Mustang over the weekend. Same with a Cuda or Challenger. Chevy and Pontiac were no problem.
    2) the engine you show for the ZL1 is not. ZL1s never had a Tri Power set up and they were not a cast block.
    3) Boss2s were equipped with specialty heads?? to try and catch the Z28s which used across the line parts which were already available. Aside from a piston with a different pin height and 2 different intakes, the Z28 was not the engineering hassle that the Boss was.
Best 4 American engines of the 60s & 70s with potential to go far beyond what was offered with the least effort? Ford Cammer (not offered in a car), Boss9, Chrysler Hemi, Pontiac RA V (not offered in a car). The last one is hard to call since the offerings of tunnel port/hemispherical chambers falls off from there.Buick Stage II, but there were not many of those around.

Now you're talking. By the way, I recall reading that Pro Stock racers like Bob Glidden actually filled the ports a bit to reduce their size/volume to increase air/fuel mix velocity. I wonder if Ford intentionally limited the power the Boss put out. One reason besides NASCAR rules for dropping the SOHC "Cammer" was Ford was reluctant to unleash a 650 HP monster on the streets.

ZL1 did not have a triangle shaped valve cover ! Only tri power engines did . The L89 (aluminum head) and L71 iron head. Bolth @ 435 hp. Really wish people would check info first. Getting really old with incorrect info !

The Ford 427 SOHC was so fast that Chrysler Corporation threatened to pull out of Nascar unless they banned the motor. The 427 SOHC, with 650hp was the top of the heap of all 60's engines. Its a pity that Ford never got around to installing them in their cars, because of Nascar's decision to ban them.
Still, just under 1000 of them were sold over the spare parts counters at the Ford dealerships. Naturally, most were used very successfully in racing.

David Jury-How did they know the Cammer was so fast if it never raced in Nascar?...The mystery fastest lap at Daytona?(Funny thing is no one seems to know the ACTUAL speed,or who was driving)
Chrysler only withdrew it's factory cars AFTER Nascar banned the Hemi AND the Cammer(at the same time),at the end of the 64 season.
Ford had no intention of putting the Cammer in production cars...It was a race engine.
Research Nascar history, instead of listening to Ford folklore

Not true. Bill France put the stop to ALL specialty engines after the 1964 season (which targeted Chevy's "mystery motor", Chrysler's "Hemi" and Ford's "Cammer") and stated that only production line engines (available to the public) may be used in NASCAR racing. Chrysler boycotted NASCAR in 1965 (this is why Ford won); however, Chrysler offered the splendid street hemi to the public in 1966. The Hemi (Gen II) was made available to the public in Chrysler automobiles (Dodge and Plymouth) from 1966-1971. Ford NEVER offered the "Cammer" to the public in any production line automobile, this is why it was not allowed to race. Ford's SOHC engine was also plagued with an inferior oiling circuit and an inadequate timing chain; thus, its durability in a 500 mile race comes into question.

I've been a motorhead since I was just a kid and I've only seen 1 cammer actually installed in a running car. Oh, yeah, I'm 60 now.

Daniel Adams. Go to theHEMI.com. Go to the General Hemi discussion forum. Go to the 427 SOHC thread. And when you're done reading that, for your edification read the FORD fudge factor thread that's on the same page.

funny thing is the engines with the most favorable bore/stroke ratio and good rod angle best suited for high performance are not included. the Mopar 383/400 and the chevy 327. the Mopar low deck wedge is so rugged well designed and easy to work with. in my book the best engine of all time. these engines last forever.
