    Thank you so much! My 6 month old puppy is over protective, Anything she can lay her paws on is now hers. If you give her food she will growl at you and sometimes bite, Also she will rip up toys and shoes and things Like that. We try to get her to drop The item but she will growl and bite. This has helped me so much and now i can actually play will my dog and drop items without her biting!

    Very helpful! I tried this with our 1yr old australian shepherd. (He loves to take our things and run away with them, sometimes chewing and damaging or destroying them.) He got it down pretty quickly. I only worked with him for about 10-15 minutes. Tomorrow we will work on it some more. I can't wait to see how things progress over time!

    My Sadie steals things. Paper towels, Christmas ribbon, flowers, anything that hits the floor and she hears it, she’s going to get it. She goes to the couch or on the bed and lays down with it. When you put your hand near her mouth and say drop it, she turns her head away from you, but she never gets up and runs away from you. She stays there but she growls a lot. if she does get up and move, she will come right back to you, and lay down, it’s almost a game with her. A lot of times she won’t drop it, even for her most favorite treat or toy. i’ve done the training. Where are you have things on the floor and she’s on the leash and when she comes to it tell her to leave it and she does that but when she’s off the leash and she gets something she will not drop it. I have tried a lot of different things and she just won’t, let go of whatever she has in her mouth. What would you suggest I do?

    I'm really excited to try this. We took in a 2 year old red nosed pit bull from a neighbor who was basically unsocialized and not trained at all. I've been working with him diligently on numerous things - leave it, waiting at the door, ignoring people and other dogs on walks (the former is going better than the latter) - all of which he has learned with amazing speed. He's really, really smart, and really, really sweet, and I can't get him to drop ANYTHING. This is a real problem, because he's very much a toddler and will put *anything* in his mouth, even if it will result in any emergency trip to the vet if I can't get it away from him before he eats it. It has been very clear that he's turned grabbing things into a game of "keep away," but there's nothing fun about trying to get a Mr. Potatohead ear away from him before he chokes on it.

    I have a 2 year old Amstaff mix. Very quick and athletic. She takes other dog's balls and will not give it up so I can return to owner. As you know and Amstaff is in the same breed family as a pit bull and she has that strong determination to not back off from taking a ball as though her life depends on it. I often tell people she would not drop the ball, even if you used a baseball bat. They are always the attractive rubber balls you purchase, like "chuck it." She especially is crazy about balls that squeak. The harder I try to get the ball from her, the more determined she is to not drop it. She is too strong to take it from her mouth. She literally goes crazy as though it is prey. I have tried many things like using an e-collar with sensitivity at full strength. This just makes her more determined to not give it up. She is not distracted by anything. Offering her treats or another ball is fruitless. The only thing that works sometimes is to hook a leash to her harness and pull her away from the ball if she sets it down for a second. It is at the point that I can't take her to the dog beach or a park with other dogs playing fetch. If I do, I must keep my distance from other dogs playing fetch. Do you have any recommendations?

    I have done all of this to the letter with my field Lab Retreiver. He will cooperate and drop it following a command for 1-10 times and then he suddenly decides to hold onto it and he will not drop it for anything. Not a substitute stick or ball. Not for kibble, not for meat, not for being put in the garage. Not for abruptly ending the game. Not for scolding him (I don't do this anymore). He will go off in the yard and lie down and chew on the item. He began eating tennis balls whole so now we only try to fetch with sticks. Any suggestions?

    • @damav97
      @damav97 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This method is bullshit. Every good trainer teaches the "drop" command by pain relief methods. You press some of the dogs sensitive spots( usually belly or ears) and keep pressing them until the dog drops the item. Then start saying the "Drop" command before pressing the sensitive spots. It shouldn't take more than 5-6 repetitions for dog to understand. It is not harmful for dog, but is definitely unpleasant. It is like pinching the nipple, pinching the point of your nose or pulling the hair...

    I've started taking my neighbours 3 year old black lab for a walk everyday she's very playful but will not give the ball or toy back unless I use a treat, she's a lovely dog very loving but not trained at all she pulls on the lead runs into the road, my question is with me taking her out every day for 1 hour will it make a difference to her or am I fighting a loosing battle. P.s you can't tell her owner anything he does not listen she's overweight but he's like nooo she perfect 🤦‍♀️

    • @susanal1527
      @susanal1527 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      walking this dog 1 hour a day will help but you have to learn the dog what you want from her because she enjoys the walk but doesn't know she is not allowed to pull. i had the same issue with my staffy and the first thing that helped me was a head halter so she wouldn't pull anymore but that was to her discomfort but this way i was able to get on long walks to get her energy out in the first place then as she became calmer she listend better but kept pulling so i searched videos on youtube and learned her that she could only pull and sniff around when ever she is allowed to and i learned it from the video's of upstate canine academy, he makes it look so easy but it only works if you are calm and very consistent

      That’s got to be tough because all your hard work probably gets ruined if they don’t enforce it when she’s home? How’s she doing now, any better? You should get a dog of your own, you’d be a great dog owner!

    Dog training _ it’s really human training. Dogs not the problem. So I ask you this how do I train the other adult human in the house that untrains. He seems to think because dog is trained it doesn’t matter. Now my staffy jumps and tries to nip. Her intent makes no difference if she knocks a young child over and gets them. She is such a good dog she grew up with my kids I have insured she is well balanced. My fear is that this one person can undo all of it.

  • @cassietorgerson8533

    This sounds interesting and effective for dogs who have already been partly trained, but I can see a problem. This video showed a man with two balls; he'd throw one and keep the other hidden, and would toss it only when the dog BROUGHT THE FIRST BACK TO HIM and obeyed the command "drop it". Suppose the dog wasn't trained to bring the ball back? I think it would be difficult to teach this if the dog didn't know how to fetch the ball... but I don't mean any offense to the man who made the video. I think most of it is pretty good!

    My belgian malinois refuses to drop first ball for second ball. He will sit in front of me with the ball in his mouth and refuse to drop it. In fact, he is bullish and will sometimes push himself against me because he wants me to throw the second one so he can have BOTH! JERK! Nothing I have tried will get him to drop the damn ball other than a HIGH value food and even then, I have to drop it on the ground first and only then will he consider dropping the ball and I have to very quickly pick it up. It's absolutely frustrating and ridiculous!

      My shepherd is the same.
      My dog trainer showed me how to out the ball with food and then he stopped and then she got me to grab his collar and relax my hand and he lets go but I'm not sure if that's right because he doesn't let go naturally unless I walk off and ignore him and then he brings his ball to me and drops his ball behind me .
      Swapping balls has no effect and my shepherd doesn't go for it .

      My last retriever bless her heart was the same we had to take 3 balls 😂 I think if you don't teach them from small they'll never do it regardless of breed...my 9 week old has learnt leave it already so I think its down to training put in when small tbh

      I figured out my terrier had a strict “hierarchy” of toys. He would only drop a toy if the one I had was higher in value (to him) than the one he had.
      So for example he would drop a tennis ball if I had a squeaky ball.
      Once I figured out the system, I was able to teach him to ultimately drop the toy he had without me showing him another toy.
