Grunts do get a say in the matter, and grunts that do get their memory deleted, making them drones, effectively. I would recommend watching a video about tuis tho
Actually, the later ones likely have heavier voice changers because the hostile is not meant to listen into their battle tactics. Unlike Civil Protection, who tell you to *PICK UP THAT CAN*
Don't just throw random sciency words together in hopes they sound smart. They have no "Genetic" modification, just bionics and other augmentations. Nobody gets to modify any human genetically since the suppression field makes it impossible for an embryo to develop

The suppressor feels the most disturbing. The grunt and ordinal could just be a voice changer or garbler. The charger could as well! But something about the way the suppressor’s voice sounds. It sounds like an imitation. Like a lifeless and deadpan face imitating inflection.

I love all these lines for the combine trying to somewhat interact with you specially knowing the characters name kinda makes it a little scarier overall, yet funny when you dont fall for it and pop em a granade
There are a few little differences, but yes the majority of lines are identical. I do miss the amount of detail that HL2's soldier dialogue had though, such as each soldier having their own name and number.

I never even knew the Combine in HL:A _did this_ until now. I was aware they would refer to Alyx by name every now and then, but I didn't know it was to fool her (which by the way, the only one that's somewhat convincing are the grunts' callouts due to them being the least distorted).

Man I'd forgotten all about these and how much they freaked me out playing this for the first time! Scavenging bullets and medpens from a rundown apartment building when I heard those voices calling to me, coming up the stairwell. The fact that I couldn't see what was doing it, and that it was the last thing I expected to happen just froze my blood. Think I squatted in a VR headset, vive wand pointed at an imaginary door for about 10 whole minutes.
This gives us a really good insight into Combine units in general. It really shows how they are changed from human into their respective units. Very good find!
Now just imagine, some of the combines are truly and really friendly to the player, it would've been a twist and a good thing aswell as they accompany you where ever you go and the dangers you've come across
it's rly interesting to see as you get higher in the combine hierarchy the more distorted and less human voices become creating a more and more disturbing feel to them
I think the Ordinal being even more Garbled than the rest is more because his voice is filtered to the troops and everyone else won't be able to tell what he's ordering immediately
the enemy's actually talking and doing this is one of the things that made this game amazing for me, i played the other games in this series alot and the combine are so important to me yet they never really felt like real people because the pretty much just charge at you, but the fact that they actually talk to each other and to you it just makes it feel way more real
When I first heard this voiceline without seeing the gameplay I thought there's going to be a sequence about rogue combines or an infiltration mission.
I feel like the Grunt ones are the creepiest to me. The other Combine variants sound like they do normally in-game. The Grunts sound like they turned off their modifications and talked like regular humans, despite being heavily biologically modified. It's almost like the Combine saved their original personalities and keep it stored somewhere in their brains, solely for the purpose of using it to fool rebels. That's truly haunting
Grunt is the most convincing out of all of them because grunt still sound like a human and the other you couldn't even really hear them but grunt you can hear it clearly
If those Combine Soldiers were friendly, they would immediately take their masks off to identify if they were still normal humans. You wouldn’t see HECU Marines reverting to these cutsie friendship tricks 😆

This would be a fun an I can already picture the scenario: You wake up in one of the destroyed apartments and are making your way towards the sewers. You reach an alleyway and the Combine are being overwhelmed by zombies and headcrabs. You think it's a scenario where you have to sneak by, but one of the Grunts spot you and few turn their attention towards you but first one raises his hand saying "Alyx is friendly, cease fire! Cease fire!" Hands you a pistol and work with the Combine to push through where each need to go
I never heard this in regular gameplay, just them calling it through the walls in the one scripted event (in which Alyx and Russell actually comment on it).
Somehow I never noticed these lines during my playthrough. I guess I just went with the assumption that none of it was for meant for me and didn't make an effort to decipher it.
They appear near the end of the game. They hardly move, and when they do it is usually to put distance between themselves and Alyx. They just spray their LMG in your general direction so long as you aren't in cover.
I find it super cool how different the combine are compared to later on (Alyx to half life 2) In Alyx, theres so much more room for free will in the combine, and their outfits are very VERY humane. You could totally take those on and off. Later on in half life 2 and such, they really mastered their uniforms, tightened down security and reinforced total compliance from people who got converted. I really do like the invisible story telling the games have, its neat
I’ve got to be honest, I liked the HL2 iteration better, and they were hyper professional and Uber calm. It’s also kind of irritating how you can really only understand the grunt. In HL2 they actually sounded like people speaking through a breathing apparatus and then threw a speaker, but they were still audible. To be honest, the wide variation between classes and unnecessarily distorted voices make the combine in half life Alex seem a lot more like... video game enemies ironically enough.
the ones in this game seem to be less modified than in hl2 which would make sense, which makes them more human in their speech and behaviors. they actually have to purge cognitive dissonance and memories from their brains occasionally in half life alyx, and it seems that by half life 2 they have improved the soldier making process to leave less of their humanity and requiring less specialization in terms of their functionality. we actually see a bit of this in hl2 with the cp officer who makes you pick up that can, cp officers are unmodified humans and would be more likely to do such a thing than a hl2 combine soldier.

The ones in HL2 look like they got a much more streamlined version of the cyborging process that made them look, well, maybe a little dead, but no more so than they'd look if they were perfectly preserved and fresh in a morgue refrigerator. The ones in HLA look like they've been Stroggified and their skin looks like expired burger meat that fell in a grease trap and got left there. And yet they're the ones who've shown more personality.

the "target is friendly" and "cease fire" ones still make no sense to me. i can understand the ones where they are directly addressing the player, as it wouldn't confuse their squad, but ordering your squad to hold fire and expecting them to know when it's an actual order and when they are supposed to keep shooting sounds like it could create MASSIVE problems if they actually were ordered to capture someone alive.
@@Vizimech maybe i didn't explain it well enough. imagine that a squad of combine soldiers is engaging someone, and one of the soldiers realize the target is actually someone that they have been ordered to take alive. so the soldier calls out to his team "cease fire" and they stop shooting. the target steps out and one of the soldier's squad mates immediately shoots the target dead, thinking that it was meant to be a bluff to lure the target out.
@@Dead_Weight21 the problem is that military communication is designed to be clear and concise to prevent mishaps, and the combine are well organized. to say one thing and mean another is about as far away from this principle as you can get.
I didnt play this game, and i don't understand precisely how Alyx can hear their radio (if it is radio at all) but what if they just aren't broadcasting the message? They dont really have to. And if I remember correctly, their voice volume increases with proximity, with might indicate it's not radio at all and that they're just talking aloud, which is strange in it's own right. Edit: also, they likely have a code for captures. Plain english is rarely substitute for military lingo. I doubt a soldier would fire, especially when this is likely a calculated higher up decision. They were probably briefed about this specific situation, seeing as how every variant says the same things.

the enemy's actually talking and doing this is one of the things that made this game amazing for me, i played the other games in this series alot and the combine are so important to me yet they never really felt like real people because the pretty much just charge at you, but the fact that they actually talk to each other and to you it just makes it feel way more real

When I first heard this voiceline without seeing the gameplay I thought there's going to be a sequence about rogue combines or an infiltration mission.
Tbh I would love a game where you are a combine shooting holes through humans heads

I feel like the Grunt ones are the creepiest to me. The other Combine variants sound like they do normally in-game. The Grunts sound like they turned off their modifications and talked like regular humans, despite being heavily biologically modified. It's almost like the Combine saved their original personalities and keep it stored somewhere in their brains, solely for the purpose of using it to fool rebels. That's truly haunting
But yeah, I can sort of see why they didn't actually implement this, since only the Grunts sound remotely human or are even understandable

I actually noticed a couple of these (it didn’t work) but it had me so confused
Grunt is the most convincing out of all of them because grunt still sound like a human and the other you couldn't even really hear them but grunt you can hear it clearly

If those Combine Soldiers were friendly, they would immediately take their masks off to identify if they were still normal humans. You wouldn’t see HECU Marines reverting to these cutsie friendship tricks 😆

it would be cool if they did help you, like if they were autonomous combine units, but we're stuck with the harsh reality of not being on the side with the cool units and weapons.
Wish there was a part in the story where you could find a rebel in a grunt suit, hiding in a closest with unique voice lines, and he would pull his helmet open

This would be a fun an I can already picture the scenario:
You wake up in one of the destroyed apartments and are making your way towards the sewers. You reach an alleyway and the Combine are being overwhelmed by zombies and headcrabs. You think it's a scenario where you have to sneak by, but one of the Grunts spot you and few turn their attention towards you but first one raises his hand saying "Alyx is friendly, cease fire! Cease fire!" Hands you a pistol and work with the Combine to push through where each need to go

I never heard this in regular gameplay, just them calling it through the walls in the one scripted event (in which Alyx and Russell actually comment on it).

Somehow I never noticed these lines during my playthrough. I guess I just went with the assumption that none of it was for meant for me and didn't make an effort to decipher it.
They sound like they love alyx
i have no recollection of fighting the suppressor, holy SHIT is their mask design intimidating. I love it
They appear near the end of the game. They hardly move, and when they do it is usually to put distance between themselves and Alyx.
They just spray their LMG in your general direction so long as you aren't in cover.
I find it super cool how different the combine are compared to later on (Alyx to half life 2)
In Alyx, theres so much more room for free will in the combine, and their outfits are very VERY humane. You could totally take those on and off.
Later on in half life 2 and such, they really mastered their uniforms, tightened down security and reinforced total compliance from people who got converted.
I really do like the invisible story telling the games have, its neat
I’ve got to be honest, I liked the HL2 iteration better, and they were hyper professional and Uber calm.
It’s also kind of irritating how you can really only understand the grunt. In HL2 they actually sounded like people speaking through a breathing apparatus and then threw a speaker, but they were still audible.
To be honest, the wide variation between classes and unnecessarily distorted voices make the combine in half life Alex seem a lot more like... video game enemies ironically enough.
the ones in this game seem to be less modified than in hl2 which would make sense, which makes them more human in their speech and behaviors. they actually have to purge cognitive dissonance and memories from their brains occasionally in half life alyx, and it seems that by half life 2 they have improved the soldier making process to leave less of their humanity and requiring less specialization in terms of their functionality. we actually see a bit of this in hl2 with the cp officer who makes you pick up that can, cp officers are unmodified humans and would be more likely to do such a thing than a hl2 combine soldier.
@@flynntaggart8549 the cp are completely unmodified- they just have quotas and are given credits for simulated reproduction and better food. Anything above that requires a memory wipe and surgery.
@@flynntaggart8549 Okay, I've seen a lot of people saying the HLA Combine are less modified, but you've clearly never compared the Combine soldiers between HLA and HL2 with their helmets off. The ones in HL2 look like they got a much more streamlined version of the cyborging process that made them look, well, maybe a little dead, but no more so than they'd look if they were perfectly preserved and fresh in a morgue refrigerator. The ones in HLA look like they've been Stroggified and their skin looks like expired burger meat that fell in a grease trap and got left there.
And yet they're the ones who've shown more personality.
@@ChrisMathers3501 i have seen them and i had just assumed it was more about engine limitations and the time it would take to make a very detailed model that would only be seen like once or twice in the entire game. also, external appearance does not necessarily represent internal modifications.
@@ChrisMathers3501 While the combine in HLA do look more messed up, I'd chalk it up to the fact you're only seeing a damaged model of them, and never their proper body like you can in HL2.

the "target is friendly" and "cease fire" ones still make no sense to me. i can understand the ones where they are directly addressing the player, as it wouldn't confuse their squad, but ordering your squad to hold fire and expecting them to know when it's an actual order and when they are supposed to keep shooting sounds like it could create MASSIVE problems if they actually were ordered to capture someone alive.
Well the intention is to indeed cease firing and lure the player out into the open

@@Vizimech maybe i didn't explain it well enough. imagine that a squad of combine soldiers is engaging someone, and one of the soldiers realize the target is actually someone that they have been ordered to take alive. so the soldier calls out to his team "cease fire" and they stop shooting. the target steps out and one of the soldier's squad mates immediately shoots the target dead, thinking that it was meant to be a bluff to lure the target out.
@@Dead_Weight21 the problem is that military communication is designed to be clear and concise to prevent mishaps, and the combine are well organized. to say one thing and mean another is about as far away from this principle as you can get.
I didnt play this game, and i don't understand precisely how Alyx can hear their radio (if it is radio at all) but what if they just aren't broadcasting the message? They dont really have to. And if I remember correctly, their voice volume increases with proximity, with might indicate it's not radio at all and that they're just talking aloud, which is strange in it's own right.
Edit: also, they likely have a code for captures. Plain english is rarely substitute for military lingo. I doubt a soldier would fire, especially when this is likely a calculated higher up decision. They were probably briefed about this specific situation, seeing as how every variant says the same things.
