Some info: While making sound modifications for the suppressor, I discovered that the “die by player” lines (“Alyx”, “Overwa-“ etc.) don’t play, even in unmodded gameplay. Instead there will just be silence. Not sure if this is intentional by Valve or a bug.
I like how it cuts their vocoders off as soon as their hearts stop to play the flatline rather than them grunting or death rattling. Pretty eerie, actually.

The Ordinal's death sounds are the saddest in my opinion. No screaming or anything dramatic, just sad and pitiful whimpers. It's almost like deep down the Ordinal is so tired and depressed that all he can do in his final moments is whimper in sadness.

So the grunts could be actually saying full words and pleading but the vocoder cuts it off with a flatline beep
This makes so much sense. The combine have a clinical attitude to everything, even their own troops. It's why they use terms like "cauterize" or "malignant" They'd see Overwatch as merely tools, why let a soldier speak any longer if he's going to die? It'd damage moral as you say and also create confusion.
It ties in with how the Combine sees everything in clinical, cold terms. From the POV of how it benefits them. When the systems built into them detect the soldier will die, it's no longer useful, and so the voice system is disabled.
I think what makes these sound so real is that rather than the usual sigh or groan of release (or over dramatic scream), these sounds convey much more immediate pain... the kind that locks up your body and your breath, the kind of truly incomparable and debilitating pain that I can only assume comes with being fatally shot.

I don’t think Eli Vance would have a very high priority level, he’s useful to the rebellion but alyx is capable of absolutely SLAUGHTERING combine and is a bigger threat.

It's interesting that the grunts will try to say 'I'm sorry' right before their death. I recall someone mentioning that some combine were still not entirely brainwashed after being enlisted. Perhaps they were having regrets in their final moments for having joined the Combine?
It always blows my mind how good the half life games are. In half life one I didn't feel a whole lot for blowing through Black Mesa killing everyone and everything that moved (minus the guards and scientists) But once Black Mesa appeared on the scene; I felt bad for killing the Marines and the Xen aliens. I did everything I could to avoid killing the vortigaunts in Xen; they were clearly slaves and not trying to fight back. In half life 2 episodes one and two; killing the combine was a pleasure, Alyx kind of turned that off; because now you know there really is a human under all that augmentation. Killing the combine stops being funny when you learn you are still killing humans; and realize fully they didn't have a choice. It was fun killing them in half life 2; it's hard to kill them in Alyx because of how human they act.
The Ordinals sudden pause before groaning to death sounds like he suddenly felt the overpowering feeling of his organs/vitals shut downs cancelling out his augmented durability. He probably doesn’t know what pain really feels like at that point, but knows that he’s about to lose consciousness; therefore the gut wrenching groan at the horrifying realization of something he’s powerless to prevent. He wants to keep fighting but he knows it’s over.

I think the combine saying "Ended." Is the eeriest thing to me, more so from the grunts. We all know the grunts are the LEAST modified, but they still clearly undergo specific modifications to start off with (perhaps the grunts, being in between the cops and soldiers, are because the body can only handle so much modifications so quickly before flat-out rejecting, I'd love to hear thoughts) However the fact that even the GRUNTS will say "End"/"Ended" implies that, no matter how "human" they are, this is only the beginning of their evolution from Human to automaton. Knowing EXACTLY when they are going to flatline, which can be seen from the voiceless where if you shoot the gas tank, and they LITERALLY count down to their death. THAT is more eerie to me than the "Alyx" or "I'm sorry" lines.
The Ordinal is a commanding unit, and is therefore knowledgeable about things other units do not, including the fact that their vocoders are shut off as soon as they are about to die. His longer death noises are him desperately holding onto life so he isn’t shutdown, likely to give a last location report or a final message to Overwatch, but the Combine, being the Combine, do not care, and will send in the next wave of bodies one after the other until the target is dead. Ordinals are also the most overworked and stressed units out of them all, but maintain their clinical professional approach even in the most dire situations. In addition, they also feel the most pain while dying. Being the most modified out of the Combine Commando branch, they have higher quality life support systems that keep them alive longer in combat, whereas heavy units like the Wallhammer and APF have heavier armor. Their painful groans as they die are because their life supports are going haywire to keep them alive, but Overwatch shuts the Ordinal down anyway.
Ordinal sounds confused at first, then the pain sets in. It's like the figured out they can't get up, then whatever pain suppressor they were on just got turned off to save resources.
For two grunt lines I heard one say Alyx-**flatline** and the other say Help us-**flatline** this means that the combine grunts despite being modified and bleeding out are still trying to get medical help in any way possible even if the medical help is from anti-citizens like Alyx
the APF sound so pumped all the time, even when they're dying, makes me think they're pumped with extra adrenaline to compensate for the heavy ass armor they have (the charger has less health than the apf so i assume it has worse armor)

It's interesting that the grunts will try to say 'I'm sorry' right before their death. I recall someone mentioning that some combine were still not entirely brainwashed after being enlisted. Perhaps they were having regrets in their final moments for having joined the Combine?
It always blows my mind how good the half life games are.
In half life one I didn't feel a whole lot for blowing through Black Mesa killing everyone and everything that moved (minus the guards and scientists)
But once Black Mesa appeared on the scene; I felt bad for killing the Marines and the Xen aliens. I did everything I could to avoid killing the vortigaunts in Xen; they were clearly slaves and not trying to fight back.
In half life 2 episodes one and two; killing the combine was a pleasure, Alyx kind of turned that off; because now you know there really is a human under all that augmentation. Killing the combine stops being funny when you learn you are still killing humans; and realize fully they didn't have a choice.
It was fun killing them in half life 2; it's hard to kill them in Alyx because of how human they act.

The Ordinals sudden pause before groaning to death sounds like he suddenly felt the overpowering feeling of his organs/vitals shut downs cancelling out his augmented durability. He probably doesn’t know what pain really feels like at that point, but knows that he’s about to lose consciousness; therefore the gut wrenching groan at the horrifying realization of something he’s powerless to prevent. He wants to keep fighting but he knows it’s over.

I think the combine saying "Ended." Is the eeriest thing to me, more so from the grunts. We all know the grunts are the LEAST modified, but they still clearly undergo specific modifications to start off with (perhaps the grunts, being in between the cops and soldiers, are because the body can only handle so much modifications so quickly before flat-out rejecting, I'd love to hear thoughts) However the fact that even the GRUNTS will say "End"/"Ended" implies that, no matter how "human" they are, this is only the beginning of their evolution from Human to automaton. Knowing EXACTLY when they are going to flatline, which can be seen from the voiceless where if you shoot the gas tank, and they LITERALLY count down to their death. THAT is more eerie to me than the "Alyx" or "I'm sorry" lines.

That sounds like a very combine thing to do.
The Ordinal is a commanding unit, and is therefore knowledgeable about things other units do not, including the fact that their vocoders are shut off as soon as they are about to die. His longer death noises are him desperately holding onto life so he isn’t shutdown, likely to give a last location report or a final message to Overwatch, but the Combine, being the Combine, do not care, and will send in the next wave of bodies one after the other until the target is dead. Ordinals are also the most overworked and stressed units out of them all, but maintain their clinical professional approach even in the most dire situations. In addition, they also feel the most pain while dying. Being the most modified out of the Combine Commando branch, they have higher quality life support systems that keep them alive longer in combat, whereas heavy units like the Wallhammer and APF have heavier armor. Their painful groans as they die are because their life supports are going haywire to keep them alive, but Overwatch shuts the Ordinal down anyway.
