    I am a non native speaker and did all my flying in a towered field. For the first three months speaking with ATC is more harder for me than understanding Sanskrit or Greek. But now I am just a fresh instrument pilot and i am confident enough to make a solo international flight. Its just matter of time and will power. Listing to live atc.net and seeing different atc terms in aims really improved me. Most importantly dont fear to any situations because our adrenaline only works to fight

    I was pretty much the opposite, I started my flight training at a controlled airport and was intimidated by the chaos and self regulation of uncontrolled airports. Eventually it worked out just fine. Great video.

    Great video for student pilots! I'm 5 hours into my training and was looking for good examples for ATC. Another good product for students to practice with ATC is called Comm1 radio simulator. Thanks for the upload.

    Great video! These are great examples for people new to leaning the second language of aviation. Wish I would have watched these before I started flying

    Wow. This is really helpful. I have found it hard to find "examples" of communicating with ATC (besides trying to keep track of a million planes at once on liveatc.net!). Thanks for taking the time to record and upload this!

    I'm sure that's we all thought in the beginning. I remember my first flight into a controlled airport. I was doing the flying and my instructor was doing all the radio work. I still to this day remember him making all the calls and I didn't understand a thing he was saying. It really just take doing it a few times and I highly suggest you record your audio along with video if you can like I did here to replay over and over.

    An important point is a lot of Class B airspaces contain other class airspaces such as Class C and D, understanding ATC communications to get out of Class Delta while in Class Bravo can be tricky for some new pilots. Here in NYC (KHPN) its espically difficult becasue of all the restrictions put in place after 9/11.

    It may take a bit of practice, but is easy once you get the hang of it. Just like learning anything new with flying , you always feel like you are trying to walk and chew gum at first. Many times ATC will give you a lot of info at once (like clearance and a wind check). You get used to parsing out the items that you need to repeat and mentally storing or discarding the others.
    It is all just a conversation, and declaring that you are either a student or unfamiliar with the area goes a long way.

    I purchased an Audio patch cable from aircraftspruce. It's a pigtail that you plug into the headphone jack and it splits the audio so you have one input for your headphones and one for a smaller 2.3mm. I think Radio Shack has something similar.

    When they say report downwind, it means that when they are in the downwind leg of the pattern they need to contact the tower.

    Being a non native english speaker it's good to hear that even you guys (americans) have hard time to understand ATC. To me if someone not "enunciate" enough or mumbles fast, really difficult to pick what they're saying.

    Nice video dude. Up here in WA state, we are 85% uncontrolled, 5% Controlled, and 10% MOA. so we have a lot of "jump in the fire" flying up here. Nice work on the radio. Only thing I would have done different, "roger on option clearance. Verify full stop is available instead"? Other than that, awesome work. Talk about some mellow, laid back ATC's. Remember - keep the front gear light on take off. Pull back on the yoke to make it very light, and once you hit 62, the plane will take itself off! :)

    Here's what I do... I use Sony Vegas (pc software) to sync the audio and Video. You can use just about any video editing software to do this. Another option is to get a Video recorder that has an audio input so it automatically syncs with your video. GoPro will do this and is the direction I'll be going soon.

    Means when you are parallel with the assigned runway you have to call the tower and say you are left downwind(or right in some cases) of the runway. Tower should come back to say cleared to land. Keep in mind though that if it is a busy day the controller can forget about you(it has happened to me before lol). In that case call him/her again after no response the first time.

    learn something new... 6:25 wind shear on departure, the instructor notified tower of the incident as an advisory. That's one of those things that you're not really taught, you just have to pay close attention. It was good the instructor reported it, because right before the instructor called it up, it wasn't even on my mind to notify tower of wind shear on departure. That's something I can take with me in my training. I would seem like common sense to mention it, but sometimes it's not.

  • @deepseajunky
    @deepseajunky  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    use a digital voice recorder and an audio patch cord plugged into an available headphone jack. During editing you'll just need to sync the audio with the video. can be a challenge sometimes but well worth it.

  • @deepseajunky
    @deepseajunky  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've just been using the suction mount that came with the camera. So I don't have much advise here.

    If you use a flight sim like MS FSX or X-Wing try out VASTIM.net for an ATC experience with a real person. They also offer training and free software if you want to be the contoller, from a Delivery controller all the way to ARTCC.

  • @deepseajunky

    Correct, and I believe it's "left close traffic". Someone will correct me though if I'm wrong :)

  • @deepseajunky
    @deepseajunky  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    What he was saying is you don't have to say the word "Runway". Just say "Two Zero"... "Crossing Two Zero"... "Holding short Two Zero", etc.

    My 2c:
    1) Pretty awesome video :-)
    2) I envy your camera placement. Where exactly did you mount it? I'm still struggling where to put it to get a nice balance of sky/horizon and instrument view.
    3) To those who said instructor sounded like a di*k: if your instructor DOESN'T sound like one, change him now. He's there to save your life down the road, not to treat you nicely.

    • @deepseajunky
      @deepseajunky  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      In this video it was suction cup'd to the right side rear window with an extension arm. One problem with this is when the instructor was in the plane it would tend to lose focus outside the front window. Camera placement can be a struggle, I agree.

  • @deepseajunky
    @deepseajunky  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    if they instruct you to cross then you are not required to hold short. But use caution of course.

    Hello again, sir. First of all, thank you for replying. I would just like to ask again what equipment should I buy to sync the video and patchcord cockpit voice recorder. Is patchcord enough or do I have to buy a camera from spruce that is compatible with the patchcord? I really want to PM, but the youtube new layout sucks. Thanks again and thanks for the videos you uploaded.

    Nice vid, thank you. I am not a pilot, yet, but have a question. Why are some of the comments critical of the instructor? I didn't think he was as bad as some of the comments made him seem.

  • @atcssct
    @atcssct 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    what i was asking was...why not? As a controller for 32 years, I found it pretty good practice to say it...but OK. Keep in mind there are a lot of taxiways with numbers associated with them still in use. Y11 for example. If you were given "hold short of taxiway Y11" would you read back "roger hold short of 11?" Hopefully not. Jus sayin.

    at 6:25 in the video, student is about to rotate for the takeoff when the instructor pilot verbalizes " soft .. field... land ..." - and then the wind gust hits. What was the heck IP talking about? I thought the student did a nice job despite having that instructor aboard.

    Hello again, sir. Thanks for replying again. Now, I'm inclined to buy the GoPro, but can you give me an advice what mount to buy for their latest Black Edition which costs $399.99. I want a mount for Cessna, too. There are so many options in their website. Thank you.

    Question.. when you get taxi instructions to cross runways does that mean you have to hold short before each runway or are you cleared to taxi across?

    How do you record the voice trans between you and the ATC. I record some of my flyings but I hate relying on the camcorder's mic since I can't record the ATC radio
