    The part about using drywall compound on the Kerdi Board is very true! I was renovating my bathroom, and the mold from the original failed shower destroyed the drywall about 5 inches outside the limits of the shower design (the only thing holding up the old wall was the tile itself). Extended the Kerdi Board about 8 inches to the next stud, and used a bucket of drywall mud over the whole thing to texture it, prime, and paint. It's about the same process as mudding a butt joint.

    Thank you for your quality videos. I am glad that you take the time to explain the finer points; why you are doing the steps in this order; or why the product choice is important. I've watched hours of your videos and am really impressed.
    I've tiled five bathrooms; three in our current house. I'm think about redoing a basement bathroom because the current floor is 30 years old and we want a change. Once I knock out the current tile, questions arise. I'm thinking of using a diamond grinder to smooth out the surface. I did not use floor leveler originally and the tile has stood for 30 years. I'm think of using the Schluter membrane for my redo but am questioning whether I need it. I intend to take out the vanity and redoing the entire floor so my wife can pick out new vanity once I'm done. Any thoughts on when and when not to use Schluter?

    Love this channel as it has helped me with several small projects. Have started a small bathroom remodel and hoping for some advice. House was built in 78, so subfloor was old plank boards on 16C . I put 3/4" Advantech over the existing subfloor after repairing the water damage that was there. Plan is to use LVT and the advantech is slightly uneven. (understand original sub-floor is uneven) Should I use FLC before laying down 1/4" Ply underlayment to give me a smooth surface for the vinyl? Or another option? I have replaced the drywall with moldguard and only plan to use tile as a backsplash, rest will be painted. I am at a stand still as I don't know which order I should move on to complete. Finish the walls complete, then the floor, (except for vinyl), shower, vanity, then the vinyl and finally the toilet. I will only be installing a shower base and surround, so no tile is involved. Any help is appreciated and I apologize for being so long winded.

    Hi Jeff, Been watching your channels since 2018. Thanks so much for all your help with putting in my new floors, drywall, and more. QUESTION: I have had to widen the bathroom door to accomodate a standard width door so that I can get the new clawfoot tub in. There have been a couple of floors installed since that wall went in and I now have the top 1/2" x 18" x 6" of the walls base plate extending into my soon-to-be doorway that I need to trim down. What's the best tool for this job. Started with my multi-tool - and oh-boy is that slooooow going. Do you have a recommendation for a better tool? Or for that matter - a better approach to solving this problem?

    Great video Jeff. You really showed the vast array of options for achieving a custom design and finish. You laid it all out very clearly and provided a fantastic overview of the potential. You also demonstrated the value of strategically working with a designer to creatively and more simply achieve a high-tech design while still keeping it within the scope of a DIY effort and budget. Fantastic result on the custom job and the video.

    Hi Jeff! I am about to attempt my first bathroom. I'm ignoring your advice to start with a basic bathroom and I'm going straight for a DIY custom, medium sexy bathroom with tile and heated floors ;) It is definitely at the very top end of my learn-as-I-go skill set, but I am confident I can do it. I am super grateful for your videos. My question (for today) came up at 6:29: for heating the floor in a tiled shower, at which layer do you install the heating element? I am doing a sleed-slope shower pan instead of using kerdi because kerdi doesn't make a prefab shower pan with the proper linear drain positioning. And because I'm not using kerdi on the floor, I won't be using kerdi anywhere to minimize cross-product-contamination. Cement board and roll-in waterproofing membrane for the walls. And for the floors...as well as where the heating element goes I'm curious what the layering sequence is for the whole shower floor. Would it be 1. speed-slope on plywood substrate. 2. plastic waterproof membrane going up the walls. 3. another layer of cement to bond with tile. 4. heating element (I plan on using the self-set wire that comes on a spool). 5. mortar and tile? Thank you so much! Looking forward to getting this started.

    Hi, this is off topic, but I have a question. I have been watching your video from 12/26/18, about building a shed. I'm confused about how the roof is attached to the shed. I saw you put the blocks in 3 corners, to square the roof. I also saw the 2x4 that attached to the underside of the over hang part and the small vertical pieces that supplied the load transferrance. But I never saw you fasten any of the roof rafters to the tops of the front and back walls. So, my question is, what holds the roof on? Did I miss something? Please let me know. I just finished my base and I will now start building my walls, so I want to know about the roof, before I get to that stage. My shed is going to be 4 feet wide and 8 feet deep, it's just to store my snow blower and a few tools. The front wall will be 6 1/2 feet tall and the back wall will be 5 feet tall. I wanted to have an 18 inch overhang in the front and 6 inches in the back, with a 4 inch overhang on each side. I would appreciate your input very much. Thank you. :)

    Jeff I need some consultation about creating a curbless shower installation. Part of what I am wanting to know is the subfloor. Do I buildup the subfloor outside of the shower so it is higher? so that the curbless shower can go down towards the drain? Issue I have is a main structural beam is right underneath, within 6 inches of drain. In other words I do not believe code will allow me to move the drain. I would love to send photos with descriptions so I can get advice on the floor and curbless shower. Other issue is that the subfloor is not level across the entire room. So an initial question is do I build up the floor using cement floor leveling products first and then add 3/4" plywood? or 5/8" ? The reason I mention 3/4 or 5/8 s is inspector said he would allow for 1/8 drop per foot because of the Beam I mentioned...the shower dimensions are 39 " deep fron to back to the wall, from left to right 5 ft or 60". The drain is on the right side, so the slope would run from left to right. The 5 ft dimension is maintained in the rest of the bathroom for 11 ft total. Thanks James PS I would actually like to save the most money by doing as much as I can. Thanks to some of your videos I have already redone the copper to pex for everything, installed a Grohe 3 port valve. I have done my own plans and received a permit for the remodel last week.

    Hi Jeff awesome videos! I am remodeling my bathroom and designing it now. My shower will be 34” x 52” and will be using kerdi pan and wall boards. Would you recommend a niche for a bathroom this size or a ledge build out like you did? 2 sides will be glass panels while one of the 52” walls is an exterior wall. Would think the ledge would have to come off the 34” wall where the valve will be. Thanks!

    When doing bathroom walls, should you use cement board? I'm not talking about around the shower. I mean all tje other walls.

    • @devinF1piper
      @devinF1piper 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can use cement board, lots of contractors do and the results are good, if you know what you're doing. Make sure you use the screws designed for cement board, use the right fiberglass tape, and tape the seams with thinset.
      You can also get some of that redgard rubberized waterproofing compound and go over your seams, heck you can do the whole shower surround with it if you want to, and that will help with waterproofing
      Oh yeah, and keep the edge of the cement board like 1/4" - 1/2" away from any horizontal acrylic surfaces - you don't want it to rub

    Jeff, does the warranty from Shluter become void if touched by a diy'er? It's been awhile since I've delt with Schluter but I thought it had to be installed by someone certified or the warranty is void. Also, you must use all their recommended products and processes or the same end result applies.

    • @coatknight
      @coatknight 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not an expert but a tub usually requires more support since it is heavy and will get heavier filled with water.
      Inspect the joists and subfloor to confirm whether it is still good or needs replacement or reinforcement.

    Hmmm - it does sound a bit like a Schluter commercial ;)
    I wont argue that perhaps if you add the cost of jet backer, Redguard, cement, etc maybe the Schluter systems are somewhat comparable... (seems unlikely).
    The issue for me isn't really one of money as much as it is trusting myself to install a product I haven't gone to school to install. I am a homeowner and like doing things myself. Honestly, I dont want to go to School for a week to do my bathroom ;)
    Jeff are you suggesting this can be done without learning to use these Schluter products?

    Hi Jeff, been trying to ask a question for a while... hopefully this will find you. Have recently moved in to an old house after years in rented accommodation, so diy skills are skanty. I've filled some cracks in plasterboard ceiling, but have over-filled I think, so lots of sanding down! Ceiling is slightly textured, but rubbed- down areas are now obviously smooth and will look horrible when I paint over it. Short of sanding the whole ceiling flat 😬, please can you tell me how to mask the flat bits and blend with original ceiling? Kind regards, Mike

    Is there a reason we don't use GFCI outlets as a standard throughout the house? I understand it might be overkill but seriously - you have the peace of mind of all of your outlets. Is it terribly more expensive to set up and add to the breaker than a standard outlet?

    • @markr8077

      GFCI are to be used near water sources ie a vanity. Overkill in my opinion if used in a living room.

    • @tay13666
      @tay13666 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I can answer that, as I was just looking into it not long ago for a rewire job in my home.
      GFCI receptacles are about 5x more expensive than a standard one. Standard about $3, GFCI about $16 for 20 amp.
      Breakers are about 10x more expensive. At least for the SquareD Homeline breakers for my panel.
      Standard single pole breaker is $4.50, GFCI is around $48.

    Ernie died about 1978. Weird enough, Ernie tiled a bathroom, and shower, about 1950-1960, and when the first tile fell off, about 2010 (followed by the 2nd, 3rd, 10th), I was shocked at what was behind it....JUST PLYWOOD, and some gunk. wow. HOWEVER, Ernie, had been working with tile/concrete since he was 12. The plywood was completely dry. However, the plywood was off of the studs, by 1/8" - 1/2", and hovering over the drain pan. So, there was a backup, that was never used. A "BARN" bathroom, would stun you. If I had to guess, it's concrete, with nothing but a nice coat of lead based paint, but I do not know. You hose it out, and it still looks new. The simplicity, would stun the current industry, that wants to use commercial products.
