    You're a great educator! I love this series because you're showing off a lot of options for workouts and coaches that don't require a $$$ gym membership. I would love to hear you talk about some pros and cons of individual workouts (following your own program) vs. Group fitness -- I assume you've done both and you coach both, so that would be an interesting topic!!

    I LOVE that you said strength training now is like investing in your 401k. As someone who struggles to strength train (or do cardio if I’m being honest) but will do anything to preserve my quality of life, this hit home for me. Even though I’m under 30, I’ve been programmed to save/invest/plan for my future, and this is SUCH a new way to look at fitness for me. I’m mindblown, honestly!

    This series is introducing me to do many new people! I missed the chance to suggest a trainer for review, but Fitness with PJ has been my go-to for the past few years. She focuses on over 40 training and is incredibly knowledgeable, funny, and effective! I suggest her to everyone; she knows her sh*t and my body (and mind) is better because of her :)

    I love that I’m learning about new fitness people! I can see why you gave the rating you did today. These types of workouts can feel like not enough of either weights or cardio so you aren’t progressing a goal by much, but of course if it’s gets you moving it’s working

    Another great review!!! Thank you for pointing out how important strength training is for Women over 40, I'm 41 and am so glad to have people like you explain the benefits in such an uncomplicated way.
    I agree with posting calories burned, I can't help but obsess over it when it's there, I got rid of my fitness tracker because of my obsessive behaviour with it. I'm a Sydney Cummings Houdyshell follower and so glad she stopped posting calories. Looking forward to tomorrow, haven't heard of them! 😊

I don't want my son to have to take care of me when I am older. I want to independent. I want to be strong. I feel stronger and I am fitter than ever and I love it

    I wish my mum would listen to this advise! Boomer generation experienced such one dimensional health and fitness education, like the low fat high carb and high cardio etc etc and hearing that we have discovered new things and research shows that resistance is sooooo important is so hard for them to take on board😔 I really hope this way of training becomes the norm now and we can forget the 90’s & 00’s culture ❤

    I discovereed Penny's workouts last year and I've really been enjoying them but they do indeed seem utterly random sometimes, especially the "no repeat" ones.
    I think I might just not be crazy about "no-repeat" workouts in general, though so that doesn't have anything to do with Penny.
    She sometimes just piles squats on top of squats in the same tri-set and I feel like I can never go all out in the first exercise because I have to save something for the second one. Worse yet, if Exercise 3 is some sort of compound move involving a squat, you're going to have to go right back to more isolation squats for Exercise 1 when you start Round 2 of the tri-set. That's great if you're working for endurance instead of strength, but these are always billed as strength workouts.
    I'll contine to do her workouts, though, because I want to support as many channels that emphasize strength training for women, especially women over 40, as possible.
    Edit: I think some people are still putting that "calories burned" info in their descriptions because they know that a lot of the general public is still hung up on that aspect of exercise. I remember back when even Sydney Cummings was doing that, maybe less than 3 years ago. It seems so old-fashioned now.

    Secondly, what is the youngest age a child can engage in strength training?I would love for you to do a video explaining strength/exercise for children.

    • @JustinaErcole
      @JustinaErcole  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don’t know of any actually! And I’m not well versed in training kids, BUT I am a firm believer that our physical education in schools should at least teach us the basics (even if it’s bodyweight.) 99% of my clients come to me and can’t squat, hinge, press, or pull correctly. And I don’t blame them because we’re never taught!

    I tend to see movements like that Bicep Curl Squat in a lot of HIIT-style group fitness classes and... they me so annoyed lol. It always feels like I'm getting diluted versions of both a bicep curl and a squat/squat hold. As a certified professional, do you think there's any benefit to something like that? Besides doing it for the sake of "variety," of course.

    • @JustinaErcole
      @JustinaErcole  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It totally depends on your goal! If you’re trying to build muscle, it’s not the best choice for programming. If you’re trying to get your heart rate up, it’s a fine option.

  • @sherryg1838
    @sherryg1838 ปีที่แล้ว

    I’m 64, and have definitely noticed a loss of endurance in my 60’s. Yet I still want and need to strength train. Fortunately, my recent dexa scan showed normal bone density in my hips, and I have pretty good balance. I catch myself if I trip! I usually work out to Jessica Smith, she caters to the over 40 crowd, and I’ve been doing her workouts for ten years. However, she doesn’t have the longer rests either in strength workouts. If I subscribed to your website for strength training, it sounds like it would still be possible for me to do the strength workouts, perhaps modifying for amount of weight? Thanks for all the great info!

    Hi Justina - Based on the title of her video, what is the difference between strength training under / over 40? Types of exercise, amount of reps, etc.?

    • @JustinaErcole
      @JustinaErcole  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ok so I don’t know much about training around menopause and peri menopause, so I can’t really speak TOO much specifically there. BUT taking hormonal changes out of the picture, I don’t think there’s much difference (dependent on the goals obviously). I would say 65+ is the different bracket IMO. And that’s where you want more balance and stability work involved.

    I wish I had watched this video before I did the workout - I only burned 252 calories! WTF? Where are my 4 other promised calories ?🤷‍♀️ Seriously, though - great message in this video. Strength training IS your body’s pension. We put a lot of consideration into fall prevention (which is great) but not so much into fall survival. It’s simplistic but strong people bounce, weak people break (please do not test this anyone 🙏). Also, I love the idea that while almost all exercise is a good idea, some exercise programs make a lot more sense than others. Great work Justina 👏

    I do like Penny, but I take as much time as I need between reps and sets. No one needs to find me laid out on the floor trying to breathe! LOL!!!! But, I find a lot of creators aren't giving a lot of time for rest. We just have to listen to our individual bodies and go from there.

I'm sure she has better workouts because she seems genuinely a good trainer, though! Justina, how does a person know if their sense of balance is good enough to, you know, navigate in the modern world? I'm pretty sure mine is okay in a fitness setting because I can do single leg deadlifts and other unilateral movements fairly well, but then I trip ALL THE TIME when I'm just walking around!
