Today, loyal Theorists, in MatPat’s final Film Theory, we’re looking at a very important topic: boy role models. Here’s a test. Think of five AMAZING characters in kids entertainment who kids could actually look up to in a positive way. We’ll wait… Betcha could hardly come up with one. And that, Theorists, is why we’re here to discuss this issue today.

On the opening but about father figures, an important detail about Iroh’s character is trying to be the father to Zuko that he wasn’t to his own kid, hoping that if he gave Zuko this advice and positive role model that he wouldn’t die looking for approval. He’s come to terms with his own failings, and wants to make sure Ozai’s don’t spell Zuko’s downfall
Since we never see Lu Ten (or, for that matter, Iroh before Lu Ten's death), who knows what sort of father Iroh was to Lu Ten?
@@andrewpatton5114I’m mostly extrapolating from how Iroh acts in his Tales from his Tales episode, and the representation from everyone he helped that episode wildly being interpreted as how he wishes he helped his own son based on the line “if only I could help you”

Static shock has an amazing male lead with good morals and respect towards others.
Every time he makes a mistake, he acknowledges it and actually does a good job of apologising and better himself.
The father was also a good father.
The show itself teaches good values, including real-life problems and empathy.
Tho I'd only show this show to a child when they are between 12 and 14.
Depending on how good they can take in such strong real-life issues.
The show doesn't water down real-life problems for kids and so shows them directly how serious and bad life can be.
I wanted to recommend the same show, as well as to someone try 2000-2015 PBS cartoons, they seem to fit in to what I want to teach the next generation at a decent pace with shows like Arthur, Mr. Rogers Neighborhood, Curious George with good primary and secondary character male role models as well as educational content that teaches you and makes you think for yourself like cyber chase, dinosaur train, sid the science kid, and clifford, etc... but you have to watch them off air mostly nowadays apart from rare reruns and I find it sad, but what content that's there still holds a candle to what I expected from those shows watching them back then.
Just here to see if tirawyega is here
Phineas and Ferb might have been disobeying their parents, but Lawrence Fletcher was a solid father figure.
he was the first that came to mind here!!
I don't actually know if you could say Phineas and Ferb were actually disobeying their parents anyway?? Yes they did built a rollercoaster which their parents probably wouldn't approve of if they knew, but they were never ever told "Don't build a rollercoaster". It is not directly disobeying if no order was ever made. They probably did not even think their parents would disapprove - in fact in some episodes Candace is like "I'll show mom what you did!" and they're like "Perfect! I'd love for her to see this!" before the invention is made to disappear by the typical Doofenshmirtz plot which they didn't even intend for.
Their parents never told not to
@@friendbreakfastExactly, they weren't glad to not be caught, they kinda just... tried to sum up the events. They weren't very dissapointed the parents missed it, but they wanted them to see it nonetheless.

This video made me realise that a lot of kids' media don't really have a lot of parents/adult figures in the shows/ the kids' lives. I even turn to books, and sure enough, they mainly portray the kids trying to solve the problems themselves and not relying on the adults around them.
I am sorry, but Phineas Flinn and Ferb Fletcher are perfect role models. They are all the things you said role models should be, funny, kind, and so many other amazing traits. And in one episode their mom finds out and doesn’t care. This is not a dream, like Candace’s dream where her parents find out and send the boys to boarding school. Their dad even knows and is fine with it. Please show Ollie Phineas and Ferb. I was raised on it and it is my favorite kids show of all time.

As a father of a son myself, I really appreciate you sharing this. The general state of the attention and support we are giving to boys is something that is often on my mind, and this covers many of my thoughts and concerns perfectly. Thank you.
And as a father of both a son and a daughter it was especially great to see the results of the Lego study you shared. I've seen that in my own kids, but it was nice to see the study better explain what I've seen.
And most importantly, thank you for providing your own short list of good father figures. I agree with the whole list, but Bandit and Mufasa were the only two I thought of myself. (I especially love Bandit as because _I_ get to learn from him as I watch with my kids.) It is _scary_ just how hard it is to find good, strong male role models for our sons as well as our daughters.
Thank you. (Even if I don't wholly agree with _everything_ you said in the video, they are just details, and the overall theme I agree with. Boys need better role models too!)

You gave me the biggest nostalgia wave in one episode... I am proud
My goodness, the fact that he mentioned three of my favorite shows. It's amazing. I will miss u Matpat my old friend.
I will die on the Phineas and Ferb hill. They are NOT disobeying their parents. Dr. Doof whisks away the evidence of what they were actually doing, so their parents think they did the normal kid version of things instead of the over the top creations. The backyard beach, for example. They tell their mom they made a beach in the backyard, but by the time she gets home there's only a sandbox left. In the episode where they actually do get busted for making a flying car, the boys are confused why their mom is upset bc they had permission to make it. It's all a big misunderstanding throughout the whole show. They are not disobeying!!!
Thank you for this
Also, there are times when the dad knows, like when they turn the car into a monster trunk. The dad even rides in it
Doofenshmirtz is also such a good dad to Vanessa!!! I agree 100%
@@courtneysayre6656yep
Yeah they were just incredibly smart, no, genius kids, who made incredible inventions.
Who could be upset at that. I'd be bragging about my children if they things like that.
I feel like Hiccup from How To Train Your Dragon movies is a solid role model in my opinion. He's smart, caring, a good teacher to his tribe, tries to talk things through with him enemy's and create peace and literally does what he can to save all Dragons as possible. He also accepts the fact that he lost his leg and finds ways to embrace and live with his disability by finding ways to work with it.
Exactly, that’s what I was thinking too!
oh yeah for sure!
I feel like Hiccup is probably the role model for boy role models.
Agreed.
Yooo that's awesome, I agree
Honestly, I always wanted to be just like him-
He's my favorite character!
The missunderstanding of batman from Matt patt is painful considering he trained all the robins to be recorcful. Also he sends the message that batman is meant to just be cool and strong. In my personal favorite batman storyline, Batman the Long Halloween you see more focus being put on the strategy in stoping the serial killer Holliday and the thought required to stop Holliday. You also see him across the years being defined by his trauma. For example after the death of Jason Todd you see the next robin trained in a way that priorities safety and recorcfulness. But also, Batman is not a good role model
Absolutely 0% of was in the Peter Pan movie and I nthe book Peter was serial ☠️ the hole magic that freezes them in time was invented for the movie.

Let's also get a standing ovation for Uncle Iroh, git was a G. Him singing leaves on the vine to his dead son made me cry during a show or movie for the first time, and I already watched Coco.

Dr. Doof should have a great dad title. He was honestly never a bad guy, just a guy with lots of childhood trauma who wanted to be appreciated, both by Vanessa and the tri-state area. Thankfully, Perry showed appreciation for him, then Norm, then Vanessa, and (if you’ve seen Milo Murphy’s Law) virtually the entire universe became appreciative of him. He became someone important, something better than the leader of the tri-state area.

@@osmosisjones4912 yeah, I get what MatPat was going for, but I know for a fact she's committed like 3 genocides, not to mention the way she runs her kingdom
Which brings up a good question and one Mat didn't really cover. Those male characters are dumb or aggressive or mean because they are expressing themselves. Sometimes people. Especially children don't know how to express themselves. You dont get a male like Uncle Iroh from the last Airbender until you have gone through suffering. Until you let out all your emotions from your trauma. And some of these characters are doing just that. They are expressing their emotions in order to understand what they want to be. So to say there are no good male roll models in media because they are these things actually belittles his child and the characters. Because even his son at a young age knows he should watch Phineas because they are breaking rules and might get into trouble. But Matt should have explained why they where doing so in the first place. Their goal was to enjoy summer. To enjoy life. And you are missing the point of shows when all you see are men fighting and killing each other. Because the world isn't fair and sometimes you need to understand the hardtimes earlier in life so it isn't harder to go through later in it.
I was finally watching the FNaF movie to celebrate MatPat's retirement. LITERALLY SCREAMED at the cameo. So proud of my boy 😊 been here since the early days. Won't ever stop enjoying your videos man.

There’s absolutely no way it’s the least popular. Nobody cares about food and style theory. And more people watch movies than play games.
@@Kevmaster2000if that's true then I'm Nobody, cuz food theory is the best theorists channel

Me too, actually
I'm surprised too. I figured Game theory would be first, but I thought film theory would obviously come in second.
I'll tell you this much, I grew up watching every "violent" cartoon you can imagine. The only thing that truly matters in a child's upbringing is the parent's involvement. I was able to distinguish between right and wrong because my father told me so. I obviously can't give my life story, but kids don't grow up to be what they watch on TV, it's what they watch their families do in front of them.
Yeah, I watched MCU and Star Wars since I was at most 8 or 9, and superhero cartoons since before that. But I don’t resolve conflict with violence, because my parents taught me not to. My brother doesn’t either (well, except ONE time, but it was necessary then). Media is important for teaching kids about the world, and about morals, but the parents pretty much always override whatever Spidey says.
Facts
This is just the same as saying "video games normalized/glorifies violence"

That was an absolutely brilliant episode. Probably one of the best, most interesting Film Theory episodes you have ever made. Fantastic, thought-provoking stuff!
Roll it back to that example using Aang, he's actually a great example. When it gets to the end of the series with the big fight, where everyone says he has to use violence to put down Ozai, potentially even killing him, that he's naive for thinking otherwise... Aang says no, refuses to compromise on his morals of pacifism, and though he does fight in the end, it's almost entirely on the defensive, and he resolves it in a nonviolent manner.
Yeah but...Ang has killed a lot of unnamed fire nation soldiers throughout the series so it losses a decent ammount of its message for me.
The key aspect of being a man isn’t fighting, but knowing when to fight, to defend the good. If we dismiss violence altogether in manhood we dismiss the forces that protect society.
@@Eis_Cold allegedly, and it’s not implied that he killed anybody, aang says it through the show
Exactly I agree! The whole conflict Aang faces throughout the series is being told that he can only end things through violence, and while in some instances he must fight, in the end he is able to overcome that nature and belief everyone around him has enforced!!
@@noahmac4438 he says that sure yeah but we also see him throw unnamed soldiers into the waters in the poles and of cliffs and stuff through the series. You can not tell me that not at least one of those soldiers died because of him and hia actions while fighting.

My personal belief has always been that it’s like that because it doesn’t interest boys, as a kid I watched characters like Batman, Optimus Prime, the Ninja turtles, ect, but I’m not violent these days, because without any intention, I took in all of these positive messages underlining these series and movies, how the characters acted, their morals, philosophy’s, beliefs, ect and have placed them on myself. It’s not that there aren’t any good male role models, it’s that, majoritly women, don’t see the role model's that are beneath them, and only see them as violent, destructive characters, which they wouldn’t have watched as kids because that isn’t what interested them.

Yea parents need to be in control of the media their kids consume, kids are impresionable and are much more likely to be affected by the media: such as all the people pushing the ideas that girls are boys and boys are girls, everyone can be everyone.

8:06 Phineas and Ferb actually get permission most of the time from their mom because she thinks they are just pretending.
Yeah, that part felt a bit sloppy since Phineas and Ferb aren't trying to be bad, they just go a bit over the top because they're overly enthusiastic. I can understand the thought process because it's what Candace pushes, but it's a bit of a shallow analysis. I think it's also important to note that a lot of the other characters are flawed, but they learn to be better, bit of a miss to not note this down, though I won't deny that MatPat still isn't wrong either
Mat actually Uses Princess boublegum as a possitive example
@@homerman76well yeah but that is not really giving permission to do these things if we look from their mothers view
@@homerman76 Yeah, I was like "what rules are they breaking?" when he said that, like Candace is trying to get them in trouble, but at what point do the parents lay out any rules or give directives that they disobey? In fact, every time an adult authority figure gets involved in whatever they are doing, said authority figure is an enthusiastic participant. Their father, the grandparents, etc. They have implicit or explicit approval of their general activities from basically everyone that is aware of them except Candace, and Candace isn't ever the *ultimate* authority, even in instances where she's put "in charge" it's generally contingent upon some incredibly unlikely emergency scenario occurring first, so they're not even expected to obey her in the first place since the parents trust them to behave themselves even in the absence of adult supervision.
@@jordiko120Disobedience is still an international act. You have to know the rules to break them and Phineas&Ferb just don't know the rules.

Nah. Your kid needs anngs laughter and iroh’s wisdom
Spiderman is unironically such a good role model.
Like he is literally the most lawful good character, unlike batman and other heroes Spiderman isn't cruel and brooding he just does what he believes to be the morally best action in any given situation. Not only this but he is still learning and navigating the world as a teenage while learning from his mistakes every episode, he always does what he thinks is right even when the whole world is against him while at the same time not taking anything too far. Like Spiderman literally went to a hospital and played games with a kid who was terminally ill at one point in the show, he even showed his face to the kid to show that anyone can be a hero, it doesn't get better then that.
I'd Like to add Superman in there too. ALso Batman is not cruel, he does try to get the villains help in most versions.

Somebody brought up Hiccup being a good role model, and I would like to add Stoic. Despite being stubborn and set in his ways, he shows he can admit when he's wrong and change his ways and to trust and support his son. He is a single father who raised his son from infancy. In the second movie, he cries and dances and sings with his wife. He takes care of and protects his family without taking away from their agency and trusting their own capabilities completely.
And while I do agree that Httyd is not for very young kids, and while Stoic does have some nasty flaws in the first movie, it is just as crucial to show that people can and do change.

I never thought about it until now, but Mr Incredible. Yes most of the movie shows him as distracted and focuses on his mid life crisis etc. But in the montage, it shows that as soon as his life picks up and he gets better, his immediate priority is also to reconnect with his family, sure it shows the training, but the movie actively goes out of it's way to show us that he's not normally like how he has been
I like your point! Even with the montage, he's technically still lying to his family, but it's definitely a start, and the rest of the movie is him continuing to grow. I mean, how poignant is that part where he tries telling his family to stay in the van because he's not strong enough to lose them again, and how he accepts her gentle correction that if they work together he won't have to worry about that.
@logantimothy5202 It's so good, rewatched it the other night after I made the comment, its insane that that used to be the quality of children's movies compared to the dogshit that gets pumped out on a conveyor belt now 😂

I think he’s talking more about the violence, and doesn’t want Ollie to think he can solve everything with fighting. (Idk that’s what I got out of it)
You’re not wrong.
@@LacieAnimations But if you actually look at avatar, a big part of the show is that Aang does try to solve problems without fighting and has to learn that in SOME cases fighting is the only solution and there are things worth fighting for. Not that fighting is the solution to every problem
that's fair, but another issue is that fighting in most mediums of fiction is defeating an antagonist as opposed to conflict resolution through more peaceful / cooperative means
I remember hearing about how Phineas and Ferb never really knew that they were doing anything wrong, and if they were ever told to not do so, they would have stopped.

True, while I agree with pretty much all the things said in this video, I disagree with the indirect claim that Phineas & Ferb is not a good series when it comes to teaching a kid valuable morals & lessons. I mean, the morals of this show focus more so on the concepts & ideas of learning how to think independently, do things by yourself, and use your creativity for problem-solving rather than to create perfect role-model characters. And as you already stated, Phineas and Ferb are not even trying to intentionally lie to their parents. I mean, as far as I remember, they told their parents quite often what they were doing. They just never believed them due to that being the main plot of the show.
I started on this channel and this is how I found the rest of the channels thank you Matt Casey Cooper's dad from Casey undercover
I have the opposite answer to the question about good male role models. My mother always had trouble with a couple episodes of Bob the Builder. Bob himself is a pretty good role model from what I remember, but she noticed multiple instances of secondary characters lying or stealing and experiencing no consequences. The example that stuck out to me was the one where the pumpkin guy finds another character's lunch that they had been looking forward to eating later. The pumpkin guy eats most of the food and makes a mess, and doesn't own up to it when the other character discovers the theft. Then there was the episode where Bob and the gang were hired to install a front walkway for an old lady who didn't want to move her lawn sculptures. The machines break the tiles and damage one of the statues while screwing around, and Bob lies to the lady about why her statue looks different. The show tacitly told me that Bob could lie because he was the protagonist and that the pumpkin guy could steal because nobody saw him do it. So, not great

Same, I saw his Harry Potter vids while in an ADHD spell. I was in love with his charisma. I fell in the rabbit hole, now here I am
Same I think
For me, the best non action male role models are from Hayao Miyazaki films.
They’re not always action, fighting figures, there are plane pilots who design and marry, sorcerers who mainly just vibe, fathers who are bakers (Kiki’s Delivery service) and most of the time, they’re so gentle and soft spoken.
YESSSSS SO MANY GHIBLI MOVIE BOYS ARE LITEREALLY SUCH GOOD ROLE MODELS PLEASE WHY ARE WE NOT TALKIGN ABOUT THAT!?!?
Ghibli dad's are superior
I disagree with the conclusion, when I was a child I didn't want a role model I want an action destructive movie/cartoon setting in which I can put myself as a movie character. and probably be the best at everything
SpongeBob's dad - Caring Father
Kim Possible's dad - Supportive Dad

Love the theory! One thing to note, though, is that Phiness d and Ferb didn't think they were breaking rules, and didn't hide anything from their parents. It just kinda ended up that the parents never found out. In fact, they told the parents, who didn't believe them, and a few projects they did with their dad or for their parents. Good role models in my opinion
@@UTTPOfficerRonaldoCR7nobody cares 😍
Counterpoint: there was that one episode where they built the fort to compete with their neighbors, and while Candace was running off to get their mom, they said, “Well fun’s fun, but there are those pesky zoning laws”, and then hid the thing. I think they also hid that giant lemonade machine they made that one time after it broke down, so yeah, they know they’re breaking at least some laws and they do it anyway just to have a fun summer.
@@collinvesel9362 At least they reverse it, but good point.
@@collinvesel9362good point, but the lemonade stand was just cleaning up, and they didn't seem to hide it, the'just normal kid stuff'(not exact words) was a reference to what they were told to do that day by Candace, and didn't seem malicious. Also, the zoning laws one dent like they didn't want to break the rules, so they changed it back before it could affect anybody, not letting fun get into harmony others or fighting the law, at least on purpose
Professor Plutonium. Single dad of three girls and filled the parental roles of both the ‘mom’ and the ‘dad’. It was never treated as a gag or a joke or something to make fun of whenever he’d do what would be considered “maternal/feminine” roles. It was treated as normal, because it was. He’s a parent, of course he’d cook and clean the house as well as work to provide for his daughters.

As a young boy, I always looked up to Spider-Man the most and I can say it was because of Uncle Ben. Seeing the 2002 movie and the famous line “with great power comes great responsibility” while seeing Peter struggle but ultimately keep his promise shaped me to who I’ve become. I think Aang is also a great role model to look after as well. His pacifist nature and kind heart has always been an amazing lesson for young boys. I think
I'd say that male characters are always seen threw the lens of a flawed hero/main character as their flaws are either embraced or worked on throughout the different arcs of the shows
I didn’t I’d feel as much hearing that last signoff. Thanks for everything MatPat ❤
That Lego study is quite interesting. As a young boy who was obsessed with Legos (still kind of am but in a more controlled manner now lol), I would kind of flip-flop between third person and first person when playing, but always leaned more to the first person, which as a guy seems like it is rarer. But then again, that would also explain why I enjoy games where you create your character rather than play as a pre-existing character. Really fascinating stuff!

FINALLY someone talking about this!! I think the first time I realized this was as a kid growing up with the Berenstien Bears- my dad never liked how Pappa bear was always kinda just the funny or angry one and it made me sad as a kid.
Lego’s study makes a lot of sense looking back on my childhood and now. When my brother and I saw Avatar: Way of the Water, he was far more invested in the fight scenes while I enjoyed the character building moments more. Of course that’s not the only reason we prefer these, but it was the same watching shows and movies growing up together, and it provides really interesting insight!

I did my Communications BA thesis and final project on this subject, particularly related to male characters in Disney media. aang is a great role model for young boys. he’s kind, smart, fights for what’s right, and matures a great deal as the show progresses. 12 year old aang, as a person, is what i wish i could be right now, as a 19 year old. he’s also one of the few male characters in a show that contains violence that is very much against it. he avoids violence and physical confrontation as much as possible and even when he does get into fights, he always evades or blocks and very rarely, if ever, attacks unless he’s in the avatar state, at which point he essentially doesn’t have control over his body anymore anyway. he even figured out a way to defeat ozai, an absolute psychopath, permanently without killing him despite everyone, including all his past lives, telling him he would have to. he’s a great role model for anyone of any age, but especially young boys since they lack good role models like him in media
I do agree with MatPat that Ollie is too young for that show because of the mature topics it addresses, and it DOES have a lot of violence overall, but totally agree with your statement: Aang is super against violence, one of the few male characters who has that trait.
@@hawklegs6940agreed, especially some of the death aspects. Not only do the characters mature but so does the environment, like when katana literally tried assassinating the man who killed her mother
Das true but he's not a dad
@@hawklegs6940 Part of raising a child is teaching him that not everything in the world is tenderness, affection and forced inclusion, but that there is also violence and evil and that it is the right thing to do to overcome all that by being a good person.
If that child is not exposed to good content and good stories, he will grow up to be a crystal that, when he cannot solve a problem with tenderness and affection, will suffer a breakdown.
I have to agree with you. I played in the avatar world with my brother the whole time, switching who was the avatar and who was the enemy. Or sometimes, we had "duels" and while doing moves, we described what happened. Aang (and Iroh ofc) are great rolemodels

it took me awhile, but some dang good role models I came up with:
- Bob Ross
- Mr. Rogers
- Steve Irwin
- the Kratt brothers
I realize, however, that these were all from the 90's and early 2000's and don't really apply much anymore, but these were the only ones I could think of.
