When you said, "Aaaahhhh, man . . " you made me laugh because I know, all TOO WELL, that feeling of having everything all set and ready to go and you see that dreaded pastel dust spec on the mat. Arrrrgh. Thank you for this video, Susan, very helpful. Now I know how I can use my brown paper on a roll because it didn't work for me as a pastel paper . . . not enough tooth, so I'll use it as my dust covers!
I wish there was more spacer examples shown, maybe even a dead space in the mat for pastel dust if you used a lot of softer pastels! You did a good job with your framing I agree with a few others who think you should cut another mat or cut this one bigger to show more of your work! You put so much effort that is not shown! Well there is always the next video or future videos than will be made one day. Have a lovely afternoon!

Nancy Hanson it feels like a lot at first, but it does get easier. I realized that was a lot of product info, but just take one thing at a time.
Susan - Do yourself a favor and get a Logan mat cutter. The 350-1 is a great value and well worth the price. Saves a lot of aggravation and time.

ty so much answered a lot of questions- Could you not just take the mat and draw it to size and cut it out for the foam board? Instead of measuring it? Could you please tell me what to use for hinging the work to the mat board? TY so much
Yes, good suggestion for using the mat to measure and cut the foam board. Also, I use artist's tape to hinge the paintings to the board. I simply tape a strip on the back at the top (leaving about half of the sticky part on top), and then place the painting on the board and tape another piece of artist's tape on top of the other one to secure.

I frame my pastels by standing them up backwards on an easel. That avoids shedding extra pastel dust onto the glass. Otherwise I use pretty much the same method for framing. I hate that you wasted so much good painting behind that mat. I think re-signing it in a different location to focus on the best exposure of painting or using a smaller mat would have been better. Your painting is gorgeous and it's such a shame to waste so much of it. I usually pick out my frame before I start the painting. Good Will and yard sales have been a good source of recycling frames for me. Also, I frame without mats and use spacers to keep the painting off the glass. That's easier and less costly. Jan B yes, I agree with your comment about having much of the painting behind the mat. I literally just did this for the video purpose. I will definitely reframe that one. I also don’t use mats when framing as I like the look of just the painting behind the glass. Unfortunately I didn’t have any spacers for a frame that would fit my painting for this video. I do describe the process though of using spacers without a mat. That’s definitely my preferred method. Thanks for your tip about framing your pastel stuff by standing them up.

I guess a reverse bevel would be necessary with a coloured mount.

Not only the color, but also the surface on many mounts is quite different on the front and back, so just flipping it over would not do! Sometimes, manufacturing info is printed on the back for example.

Hi Susan. Have you ever tried cutting your own mat? Sometimes I have a frame with mat that does not fit my painting, so I take it to Hobby Lobby and have them custom-cut the mat which is fairly inexpensive to have them do, but I'd love to find a cutter to cut a beveled edge of the mat and DIM (do it myself - lol)
Yes! I get my cards from Moo too, and have been using ClearBags for years, they are really good. You did not mention what kind of archival tape did you use to hinge the painting. I also think it is important to make sure that the mat and backboard are archival and acid free, don't you?
Oh yes.... I didn't mention using archival products, but I certainly do myself. The tape I used was "artist's tape" that can be purchased in many places. I get mine from Amazon, but it can also be bought on DickBlick.com.... I meant to mention where to get my tape dispenser. It's so helpful and I found it on amazon as well. :) Thanks for your helpful comment.
I would definitely do archival everything as well especially if artist quality pastels/mediums are being used and it's going to a customer, etc. Better glass can also be purchased at most framing shops with UV protection in it to help preserve the piece. They can cut it to the exact size you need and some places will even take store coupons. =)

I watched your video but should I attach the painting to the mat with tape hinges or attach the painting to the backing board with tape hinges? I know you showed both ways in the video but I don’t know which to choose?
Hi, Susan. Thank you for the great framing tips! I'm just curious though why you don't put your beautiful business card on the backing paper so people can see it? You could even make a little paper sleeve and attach it to the back to hold it. Thanks again for the great video. =)
Great observation. I actually do provide my business card on the back of the painting as well, and also I like to give a little note card with my painting, and put another business card in the note as well. I like your idea about the paper sleeve to use with the card. :) .

Found them. I'm concerned they are not archival, as Krystal Seal bags are, BUT..the cost is almost 4x cheaper!

@@vickie6228, I've used the Protective Closure Bags from www.ClearBags.com for years and they are still perfect, no change in the bags whatsoever. The Protective Closure Bags are excellent as the adhesive strip is on the bag, completely away from your painting; they're worth their weight in gold! www.clearbags.com/bags/clear-bags/pc
This is very informative. Do you ever mount your painting right onto the mat and not the black backer board? I can never get my glass streak free until I used Norwex glass cleaning cloths.
That’s what I use too. Norwex is awesome.
My framer uses the spacers however I have not been able to find them to purchase unless I buy a large quantity

Yes, absolutely. I sell prints of my work as well and the main thing you need to do is get a really good photo with a high resolution. I use a site called fineartamerica.com to create prints of my work. You can also have your work put on other products as well. Hope that helps!
Do you normally mount your plastic wrapped paintings on foam core with 3M adhesive, or do you assemble them unmounted to send when they sell?
I never use fixative on my finished paintings as it will darken the final pieces. Instead, I keep my paintings safely protected in clear bags. The clear bags are archival. I get mine from www.clearbags.com. Here is the specific link for the bags I like best. I like to choose sized that are a little bit larger than standard sizes so I have room for my painting and for a piece of foam core board I add for support. www.clearbags.com/bags/flat/flap-tape?cat=886%2C892

Does it matter if the brown paper backing is acid-free?
That's a great question. I have not worried that much about that since the backing paper doesn't touch the painting in any way. Couldn't hurt though :)

I get mine from a local framer, but you might actually be able to order on Amazon. I haven’t checked that out yet.
This was great, but just flipping the mat is not always the same. Some mats have a better texture on the front, and not all of them are acid free on BOTH sides, so be careful.

Looks like pastels are on the high maintenance side
Perhaps a little, but there are definitely advantages too. They maintain their color longer than any other medium.
