- Last time I made a breakdown on Oleksandr Usyk he had just moved up to heavyweight and I said I was excited to see how far he could go. Well, as it turns out, he went all the way to the top. It makes me feel. It makes me very feel.
But how did he manage to overcome so many physical disadvantages? The short answer is pure skill. Let's look at how.
Usyk has 3 major deficits while fighting at Heavyweight, his lesser height, his lower weight, and his shorter reach. Many times his opponent had an advantage in all 3. But Usyk has ways to negate all of these obstacles and turn to fight to his advantage.

One thing that is not mentioned enough is that Usyk is also extremely durable.
Usyk took some big shots from Fury. The version of Fury that Usyk beat was one of the best versions, if not the best imo.

Yeah I have a deal with Top Rank to use their footage, but I'm not allowed other orgs videos in there. So I couldn't put the third fight in. Super super annoying but I thought it was still worth it to combine them. I want to do the same with the Ali vs Frazier trilogy but I think Top Rank only owns one of those fights lol

Fury was robbed
i don't think i'll ever forget watching usyk that night. fury whether people want to admit it or not is an amazing fighter with his toughness, chin, boxing skill, size and power, and he was in good form that night he came in great shape was switched on. but even when fury was boxing well and landing huge shots usyk just didn't care, he's too damn good and i don't think anyone could have stopped him on that night he was otherworldly. being skilled enough to make a competitive fight of it was insane enough with the size difference, but when he was badly hurt and losing deep into the fight he still had it in him to start f*cking mauling fury and put him down, and when we were all getting nervous that he needed to win every round he did it in style. he's the best pfp fighter of our generation and he's an all time great heavyweight who could compete with anyone in history

I think his biggest asset is high extremely high fight IQ. He makes tiny adjustments all the time in order to get out of tough situations and overcome seemingly impossible obstacles.
AJ vs Fury is my preference, as we've seen what Usyk can do to both of those guys, and if either wants the rematch, we need to know who deserves it more.

Yeah exactly, Usyk isn't small, he isn't really a cruiserweight, he's a normal sized heavyweight like Ali...
Usyk just approached boxing like chess, he's a heavyweight that cut down to dominate the cruiserweight division which was far weaker than the heavyweight... in the process gaining experience, titles, money, exposure, etc... this is something that Deontay wilder could have done or could still do... Wilder could easily make cruiserweight and probably knock everyone out, becoming champion in multiple weightclasees
Usyk has great respect for Muhammad Ali as well, I watched his recent interview where they chose which fighter beat who, he had Mike Tyson losing to Wladimir, then said Muhammad Ali beats Wladimir and then beats Usyk too, I think it would be a very close fight but Usyk still shows great respect to Ali.
He is bigger than Ali until Ali got fat.
Usyk answered all the people wondering if the old boxing legends like Ali, Marciano, Tyson could beat the gigantic heavyweights of today with the size difference being so big and the answer is yes absolutely, skills beats size unless you're a flyweight trying to beat a heavyweight.

I'll never stop wishing Wilder actually took the technique aspect of the sport seriously. With his size, speed, athleticism, chin, stamina, and right hand - against a southpaw - he really could've been a good match for Usyk if he'd spent the last 10+ years developing his technique. What's crazy is the few times we've seen Wilder's jab it's really sharp and snappy ... and yet he never uses it...
I pretty much agree. Wilder used his jab to pull down opponents guard very well, I think it's actually the setup for most of his knockdowns. But besides that he had very few ways to set up his right hand. When he did try and get some new skills he improved a lot, but I think it was too little too late. His body work against Fury in their third fight was doing something and could have set up a head shot later, but he got caught and went back to what he knew.
@@TheModernMartialArtistTo be honest I think Wilder will go down as a warning to future fighters about relying on just one aspect too much. Imagine that insane, lethal power behind a good jab, proper footwork, feints, a varied arsenal etc. I mean we'd be talking about possibly the greatest ever if a guy with Wilders power could box like Lennox or Wlad or Holmes or whoever. Look at that Luis Ortiz fight - he DID land the crazy right hand, but it took him 7 rounds of being off balance and out of position. Imagine if he could box like a champion as well as punch, there just would've been no stopping him. Anyway - the future Cus is going to show his future Mike Wilder's career as a lesson I think. That's what Wilder will be to the future of boxing, kind of a cautionary tale of hubris
i've always thought that wilder had possibly the most potential out of any heavyweight in history. he could've been the heavyweight reincarnation of tommy hearns if he bothered learning how to box, his hand and foot speed are both excellent, he's tough with a good engine, and obviously he's up there with shavers as one of the hardest hitters of all time. his frame would basically have made him the perfect outboxer
People have different strengths in many different muscle groups on their body, every person is different, for example if a very athletic basketball player starts doing a different sport that requires different muscle groups that basketball player could start to getting injured more than usual, because they develop different muscle groups from young age, I am guessing that Wilder's muscle groups are designed for that 1 punch KO in specific angles, If he does different trainings or trained differently from younger age, I think he wouldn't have that special 1 punch KO power, Wilder relies on speed and athletism while setting up his movement in specific positions, maybe he couldn't be a high level boxer and lose his 1 punch KO ability as well if he was training foot work and head movement from young age, who knows what would happen. There are many factors so its not simple.
The thing is there's a talent to technique too

Honestly, I’d love for Usyk to retire. I don’t think he has anything left to prove and I’d love to see him retire on top and prevent any further damage. But that’s just me, I’m sure.
With that being said, I too want to see Fury v Joshua. The best of the rest as someone else said
Great breadown, as always. Another thing: Usyk's predatory style, the constant moving forward and stalking had Fury backing up a lot. When Fury was landing his uppercut, a lot of those scored while he was backing up, so they didn't have full force behind them. As the fight went on, Usyk dictated that pace - a real testament to his stamina.
Usyk will go down in history! Well and truly earned his place as one of the greatest.
Congrats on a great episode. Usyk is a pound for pound great up there with Bivol, Inoue and Crawford. All these are worth doing a full show or skills study on and also maybe AJ’s clinical demolition of Francis Ngannou under the guidance of his new trainer Ben Davidson. The best of the Soviet boxing style of Bivol would be well worth a full show and maybe the Beterbiev fight also when it finally happens.

Uysk is a inspiration...undefeated 2 weight undisputed champion in just 22 fights, along with all the medals and trophies...this reminds me of another great David vs Goliath heavyweight battle...Holmes vs Spinks 1+2
Good breakdown of Usyk's favorite tactics. However, his greatest achievement in the Fury fight imo was finding positions that took the sting out of Fury's uppercuts. Rounds 7 to 12 Fury had to bizarrely twist his body to land the uppercuts he won rounds 4 and 5 (and maybe 6) with. As a consequence, there wasn't enough force behind his uppercuts to rattle Usyk in the later rounds. Must be incredibly difficult to make adjustments like this in the middle of a tough fight. But somehow Usyk pulls it off time and again.
He's easily the best boxing HW of all time. would have loved to see him against Lennox during his prime.

One aspect of Usyk's gameplan I hoped you'd bring up is how he saves energy without giving the opponent space to rest themselves. Tiring out your opponent to get better positioning and angles later on is an established strategy, but knowing how to do it safely and without spending too much energy yourself is a talent that has been lost as fights now require you to fight less rounds. As always great video, here is hoping for AJ vs Fury sometime next year.

The only flaw i can consistently see in Usyk is being open to right straights and right uppercuts. Fury cracked him a few times with the same right straight that Joshua did. The right uppercuts from fury were devastating! I had no idea fury could throw that. Either way, Flawless breakdown as usual
That is the trade off of being southpaw vs orthodox. When a southpaw gets his lead foot outside an orthodox lead foot, that means he has dominant position but I also brings him to closer to right hand of an orthodox fighter.

Usyk inspires me a lot. He just makes so many adjustments that its hard to tell what his game plan actually is. Here's hoping the rematch happens soon, because watching it with everyone on the Discord was a magical event

So glad to see this. I was delighted to see Fury take a break from mid tier heavyweights to prove his unworthiness as a current champion. While I would be interested in seeing him fight AJ, and it's clear that AJ is interested as well, I don't see it happening. I think he will focus on a rematch, and if he loses that, he'll likely retire again. If he wins it, he'll go right back to avoiding fights as long as he can, until AJ, Hrgovic or Parker are able to beat him.
Discipline, dedication, heart, cardio and skill.
Those are main keys that made Usyk an all time great

Smaller heavyweights typically have lower center of gravity, along with greater speed and stamina. That itself is usually enough to compensate for height, weight and reach.

People say that cruiserweights have been unsuccessful at heavyweight because they are just too small, but I honestly think it's just that the Klitschkos were too dominant. Haye vs Ruiz/Valuev, Roy Jones Junior vs Ruiz, James Toney vs Ruiz/Holyfield/Gunn, Adamek vs Golata/Chambers/Arreola, Cunningham vs Fury, Marco Huck vs Povetkin all of these either beat top heavyweights or had a case for deserving the nod.
It's not a coincidence that we had Holyfield and Usky before and after the Klitschkos, during their reign they were dismissed for crushing cruiserweights, but everyone else had a hard time doing so.
The Klitschko's did a number on peoples perception of boxing. No one can agree if they were super skilled in a decent era or able to coast in a super weak era. Or super skilled in a weak era haha If they were crazy knockout artists people would have appreciated them a lot more and been more willing to give them their flowers.
@@TheModernMartialArtist I think two big factors were also one there not being a clear lineage at first due to Lewis retirement, but also the era being considered weaker in large part because the US stopped being the focus. There is a pretty big pro-US bias in boxing institutions and even with people like Inoue some people criticise him for not fighting in the US.
It's just curious to see a lot of the reasoning used to criticise the Klitschko era not applying to current times, like ex-champs like Briggs or Rahman were dismissed because they were too old (in mid-30s, younger than Wilder, Usyk, Joyce, Zhang...), cruiserweights were considered easy pickings, dominant victories over undefeated champions in Ibragimof and Chagaev were dismissed because of "who did they fight." and so forth.
Like nobody would say that Fury could easily win for a decade by fighting weak opposition like cruiserweights, ex-champs in their thirties or undefeated champions with few fights, when those are the best fights on his resume and he struggled greatly, fighting weaker opposition when possible.
@@TheModernMartialArtist To be fair they were crazy knockout artist though, Wladimir has more knockout wins than Lennox Lewis had fights period and Vitali has one of the highest KO-ratios.

No way. Without the massive knockout, the match would've been very even. Now it took a round or two for Fury to recover... Both were constantly changing their tactics, and both had their moments.

He uses his Footwork, Middleweight Speed and Tenacity to beat the bigger guys. He creates crazy angles.

I think durability peaks at a certain weight class and just stays about the same for every weight class after that.
Power is the thing that stays consistent with more weight.
The size against Fury was crazy. It’s like throwing Inoue in against Canelo, and Inoue takes him out anyway 😆
Y'all talk about Usyk as if he's this small guy that scraps with giants. The guy is 6'3, about the same size as Ali. Or to put it into perspective, there's roughly about as much difference in height and reach between Mike Tyson and Usyk as there is between him and Fury.
