Here's my proposal for MMA judging: 1. Increase the number of judges from 3 to 5. (More judges = lessens the effect of an incompetent judge). 2. Judge the fight in its entirety. 3. Institute a Yellow/Orange/Red Card system for fouls. 4. Have 3 judges cage-side, and 2 judges watching on TV without the commentary.
judging a fight in its entirety is a BAD idea. scores should be written down and logged between rounds, so a judge cant go back and change their minds at the end of the fight. its the 10 point must system that has to go.
not that i dont think former fighters would be better options, but wouldnt they still have to stick to the same problematic rule set as current judges?
Same. To me, a Jones or a Silva or Pierre with dozens of title defenses is more legendary and hard than winning 2 belts and getting a fast track instant shot at another weight class. It’s cool and all, don’t get me wrong. But it’s annoying why and how UFC lets it fuck up divisions
Money fights are the ultimate disgrace of this sport. When competition is second place for money, it's no longer a sport, it's pure entretainment. The biggest problem is that MMA is still a business, not a consolidated sport. If we had a worldwide federation that cared only about rankings and matchmaking, THEN we could have a real sport and real competition. But while Dana White is concerned about making money, competition will always, ALWAYS be left aside. So basically it doesn't matter much if you chase wins and skill, being a trash talker gets you further. Just look at how much time Khabib spent in the undercard ONLY WINNING. Took him years to get a title shot. Ferguson and Khabib fighting on the same card and don't facing each other because of money fights it's just absurd.
Phædron the this I see about putting money so high for the UFC right now is that you need money and market dominance to eventually be able to lobby legislation and ultimately self governance of the sport. Right now MMA is judged by boxing judges and legislated by state fighting commissions. Hopefully it could become big enough financially where it could run itself like the NBA, MLB, and NFL.
In fairness though there is a reason a fight is a "money fight", like it or not it's because it's a fight more people want to see, complaining about money fights is kinda complaining about being given the fights most people want to see
