+David K Ink used in tattooing is relatively safe. The only problem that arises is if someone is severely allergic to ingredients in the ink, which is why people should test to see if there is anything they might be sensitive to. If there are toxins in the ink, it would be because of an unprofessional or irresponsible tattooist.
...and I'm in the process of removing a tattoo. I'm on my 11th session and it's still only halfway done *sigh* Kids, think before you get your tattoos. Opt for smaller size, black ink, and placing them where you can cover them with clothes.
if you use numbing cream it helps. its still pain but it becomes bearable pain thats more similar to the level of pain of getting a tattoo. but without the cream, its a motherfucker. yeah your back is a good place to get a tattoo i have one there as well.
ah yeah you can try one session and see how your skin reacts. laser hair removal is actually worth it b/c if you keep going, the hair stops growing back significantly so you can rid of the hair almost permanently
People, tattoos aren't for everyone. But just because you don't like tattoos does not mean that no one should get them, nor does it mean that they are worse or lesser because of it. People get tattoos for different reasons. And just because you can't relate to those reasons does not make them any less valid. Some people find that tattoos make them more beautiful. And are a great way to put a mark on a big part of who they are or what they've been through. Or as a way of turning something ugly into something beautiful. A friend of mine had a really rough go at life, and dealt with a lot of depression, and ended up with some self harm scars. When she recovered and was better mentally, she hated seeing them because they were a permanent reminder of a bad time her life. So she covered them with tattoos, so instead of something ugly on her arms, she has something beautiful. Or like me, I've gone through some shit, and I found getting a tattoo when I managed to overcome it therapeutic. A permanent reminder that I was strong enough to endure and succeed when other overwhelming problems came my way. Plus I really, really like the way they make me look :) No two people are the same, and those who dance are considered insane by those who cannot hear the music :) (Nietzsche)
My dad has a small tattoo dot on his chest. When my dad had throat cancer many years ago, they needed to mark a spot for them to send the laser to treat the cancer. The spot was a permanent tattoo, and it’s seen as a sign of dad surviving cancer A few years later we adopted our dog Bagel, and shortly after adopting him we noticed he has a tiny dot on his chest just like dad does. Further proof that he was meant for us.

Wow the comments just seem to be filled with people going against tattoos. Its art, not some horrific body mutilation. I have several tattoos myself, some from almost 10 years ago. Im still as happy with them since the day i got them.
Uncle Tom hey I know this comment is old, but as someone who will never get a tattoo I can respect it as an art form. But also a lotta ppl against tattoos jus don't want permanent markings on their body, art or not
It can also be a family marking as well, for example, some of my family members have a red dot tattooed on them to honor the death of my great grandfather who died from cancer.
Uncle Tom I only saw a few comments bashing tattoos. The rest were about the animation and how informative it was. But you’re right. It’s not mutilation at all, it’s an image or a resemblance that is so important to you that you decide to make it a piece of you.
Great video! Correction though: The needles puncture the skin at least 1000-3000 times per minute... not 50 times per minute. Also, depending how the person takes care of a healing tattoo will determine, to a good degree, if it "crusts", as well as how it looks healed. Tattooist at Metamorph Studios, 20 years experience. Thank you for a very informative and fun video!
i don't get why people who don't like tattoos have to constantly feel the need to talk down against people who do like tattoos. if you don't like it, then fine. but you wouldn't go up to a beautiful mural painted on a wall and say "that is ugly! how could someone ruin that plain white wall with this permanent eyesore!" so don't go up to a tattooed person saying "how could you ruin your body like that! you'll regret it later!" it's their body, let them decorate it the way they want.

Wow very interesting video. I have started my half sleeve a few years back. Always wondered what makes them stay in the skin. They are indeed addictive and I am planning a large back piece and another half sleeve. Nothing lasts forever and everything fades with time. Its about the journey, the milestones celebrated in ink on a canvas of skin. Its living art and the art and skill off tattooists are improving everyday!
This video made me appreciate my tattoos even more... damn, my body is so interesting, the way my skin works, the way it looks with the ink inside of it, it's so cool.
They're almost-permanent. I had a huge mistake tattoo removed with laser treatments. PSA: Never get a matching tattoo with ANYone for ANY reason. Relationships can change in an instant.....tattoos......they take a lot of money, time, and pain to change. Smarter Every Day has a great video about how laser tattoo removal works.
That also explains why you shouldn't drink or smoke while it's healing, there are less macrophages to "soak up the ink". As for these comments, I'd like to express that everybody carries stuff around with them, maybe it's their baby blanket, the locket that their mother gave them... but some people like to travel light and keep the memento on their skins. It's a personal choice and it doesn't make you a better or worse person.
People seem to be very concerned about getting a tattoo due to its permanence. I have a full-leg sleeve that I am working on and have plans to get more. I have no concern that I will be displeased with my tattoo as I age. The current tattoo that I am working on represents me and where I am in my life. As I age, it will always represent that, whether or not my values are changed or are altered in some way. If you get a tattoo that means something to you, there will be no regret. Tattoos are beautiful ornaments to one's skin, in my opinion. I know others will disagree, but I hold firm that I have none, and will have no regrets as I age, in regards to my tattoo.
So if humans lived forever, with their skin consistently going through this slow healing process, how long would it take for a tattoo to fade completely?
Had mine 32 years now, never a days regret. Because i chose wisely and thought how it would look on me when I'm an o.a.p, Also i had the good sense to be sober when i chose them.
1st tattoo (an ancient clock)- this represents the lesson I've learned which is "time is very valuable and we need to spend it wisely. Never waste your time in anger and despair; always believe that every problem will soon pass away" 9th tattoo ( "WPDD") - "WOOPIDIDOOO!"
I've got 9 Tatts at the moment and I'm Proud of it - it has been in our family for Generations to get inked. I'll get some more in future :D thanks for the info though
It's fascinating that so many cultures have developed this form so far in advance of having the slightest understanding of how and why the tattoos endure, and with so many techniques so long before the modern machine. Particularly interesting that the modern equipment is a spin off of engraving.
I wonder how the artificial ink permanently staying in your body doesn't cause any complications. Oviously it's not posonous as lead etc., but almost everything else that gets stuck permanently to your body is harmful to some degree...
Not true. A friend of mine has had a stone in the palm of his hand since he was a child. You can feel it through the skin and you can see it as a little black smudge a couple of millimeters in diameter. It's never caused him any problems and the doctor said he wouldn't remove it because it was more likely to cause issues than leaving it.
I’ll be getting my fourth soon, I have three, one on my wrist (small crescent moon) one on my upper arm and then on my thigh. Some people get shocked when I tell them that i have tattoos. But all three- soon to be four- have special meanings.
Maybe it's because of some deep-ingrained fear of commitment, but I'll never understand why anyone gets a tattoo unless they're actually planning on removing it. I mean, you're altering your body, in a highly subjective and decorative way, permanently. You're making a judgement that in 20 years who'll still appreciate whatever design you get done. How does one do that? The me from 20 years in the future will be a stranger, and I'd never give a stranger a tattoo. I understand a bit better for particularly meaningful tattoos, but even then it seems risky.
People who think that way and are considerate of future consequences and their changing perception of the world, aren't usually the types that get tattoos after all.
***** I agree, I just mean that, with a meaningful tattoo, I can at least understand being driven into getting one by emotion. Let's say someone goes through a string of cheating boyfriends/girlfriends and decides to swear off love. I can see why they'd be distraught enough to be a bit crazy and get 'Love Sucks' across their chest in capital letters. By contrast, getting a random pattern or chinese symbol for whatever as a tattoo is likely to be done with a cool head...which makes it odder to me.
How do you know the you in 20 years will be a stranger? I'm 34 and I like some of the same music I listened to when I was in my teens. I also like some of the same movies. I also have the same Super Nintendo I had when I was 12 and still enjoy playing some of the same games I use to play. My point is that when you grow up you mature, but you don't drastically change as a person.
strungoutboy21 I disagree, at least partially. While some people might not change much, I believe many people do, especially from their late teens/early twenties (when you're most likely get a tattoo). People's political views, for example, tend to change massively in their lifetime. As for other things, I suppose that depends, I reflect on my 'goth/teen angst' phase when I was in my mid-teens with horror. I used to be fundamentally nihilistic, I shudder to think what kind of tattoo I would have gotten. My problem is that you can't possibly know what you'll like in 20 years and what you won't. You might get mauled by a dog and decide they're evil, you might become famous and have the world oogle at your skin, you might have a religious conversion and become a devout Hindu. Who knows?
***** You're not only making a judgement that you'll like red roses when your 50, but that you'll want to have a tattoo, any tattoo, etched into your skin. Having said that, I do agree with you that meaningful tattoos maybe have a shorter 'life span' than plain pretty ones (although not all meaningless tattoos are attractive). All I meant was that, from the perspective that all tattoos are madness, I have more understanding of madness borne of emotion than whimsy. Of course, I'm not critiquing you personally, you can do whatever you want with your skin. I just *really* don't like tattooing as a concept and couldn't stop myself from ranting about it.
White ink is permanent, that's a myth that it isn't. It's just that the people saying that are so pale it just looks like scars... Look at white in any tattoo- it's white, not scars. Scars would leave a raised appearance. Plus, then how would black people have white tattoos if they were just scars?
minute 1:00 I used a device like the center right one to tattoo "punk" on my knee when I was 16 :D it really was just a pencil with a sharpened needle on it and blue water colour and I kind of slapped the pencil with another stick. Now 11 years later it's still there. I wouldn't do it again though. It didn't get infected at all but it's just a blurry mess now :P
That's a great snapshot of the 16 year old who became you. I've always thought that tattoos are like diary entries that take a little more commitment than most. I bet that section of your life is just a little sharper in your memory than it would be had you not given yourself a daily reminder of it.
Omg. Now I don't want to get a tattoo even more. Piercing the dermis with a needle 3,000 per minute?! How does this not leave you scarred and disfigured? The scientific reality behind everything always makes it scarier.
+Evan Heath Technically there can be. There is no exact law on tattoo inks. Many tattoo parlors even mix their own inks, making them like a fingerprint for that tattoo parlor. Since there is no law, there is a chance that whoever decides to mix the ink, becomes negligent and adds toxic dyes to the ink. Another thing to think about when getting a tattoo would be to choose your parlor carefully.
+AppeasingPoet having had a tatoo myself, I'd say that it's not dangerous but it's a commitment to have. First of all, because you just don't get a tatoo, you have to take care of a tatoo. The after care can decide whether or not the tatoo can stay forever on your skin. Secondly, because it's permanent, you have to think thoroughly before deciding to have something engraved to your body, it'd better be something that sticks with you for the rest of your life
Could be wrong but I'm like 99% positive Blistering and crusting can happen from any tattoos including professional, it depends on the person getting the tattoo not the artist?
When you can bust a myth but not a nut Diseases are only spread through the act of getting tattoos if you don't do your homework and go to someone who is certified. If you go to a certified shop they always use new needles every time thus making the chance of contracting an infection almost impossible. However if you go to someone who isn't certified they may reuse dirty needles and if the person who was tattooed before you had some sort of STD or whatever, you could get it too. So essentially you'll only get an infection if you're an idiot who doesn't go to a professional

*Rant continues* You can say that again! Won't hire because "the tattoo might offend someone" ughhh pretty sure that's prejudicial.
What's the tattoo of?
h maybe it's a lightning bolt going through a plane ?

I don't even need to ask who got this recommended... Things like this should bring us together!
So if humans lived forever, with their skin consistently going through this slow healing process, how long would it take for a tattoo to fade completely?
This channel is giving answers to questions I didn’t ask n I love it
Dude i just got another tattoo yesterday, they corporations are watching man

I’ve seen this video so many times and it still pops up in my recommended
I'll never regret my tattoos ! #proud
Do you now?

Had mine 32 years now, never a days regret.
Because i chose wisely and thought how it would look on me when I'm an o.a.p,
Also i had the good sense to be sober when i chose them.
Always wondered if cells regenerate why tattoos remain in them. Thanks for the clear-up!

1st tattoo (an ancient clock)- this represents the lesson I've learned which is "time is very valuable and we need to spend it wisely. Never waste your time in anger and despair; always believe that every problem will soon pass away"
9th tattoo ( "WPDD") - "WOOPIDIDOOO!"
Me: gets tattoo
Macrophage: am I a joke to you?
*yeh u joke*
I saw somewhere on TH-cam that there are already ones that won't need the painful needle but it's still being tested and such because it is new.

Right? ***** :)
Wow, they actually replied...

No-one reply until another year
Tattoo artist for over 25 years can confirm this as the perfect answer, came to see the comments and wasn't disappointed lol.
Given by the title: Claudia Aguirre is what makes tattoo permanent.
I'd like to get a few tattoos when I turn 18 this year, nothing big, just something small on the side of my ribs and one on my bicep.
Way to be on my recommended after I literally got a tattoo
I have two full sleeves and reading these comments even had me nervous 😂 DONT LET THESE COMMENTS SCARE YOU, TATTOOS ARE GREAT
I've got 9 Tatts at the moment and I'm Proud of it - it has been in our family for Generations to get inked. I'll get some more in future :D
thanks for the info though
This channel is so addicting dude..
because of ink
thanks for attending my ted talk
It's fascinating that so many cultures have developed this form so far in advance of having the slightest understanding of how and why the tattoos endure, and with so many techniques so long before the modern machine. Particularly interesting that the modern equipment is a spin off of engraving.
The way the cells are shown makes it feel as if there are tons of little people living inside me
Give a show called "Cells at Work" a try. All of your cells are represented by little people. :) Entertaining and informative show.
Thanks for answering a question that was bugging me since the last 7 years!!
So many negative comments
Tattoo can be a symbol of who you are or a memory of a family members...
I have been asking this for a very long time now. It's answered finally! Thank you!
One of the finest lesson on the subject!! Thank You :)
I'd really like to have a simple tattoo on my wrist! :D
I just *really* don't like tattooing as a concept and couldn't stop myself from ranting about it.
i never thought about this until I saw this in my recommended
its nice to know. but in that case, what makes white ink not permanent at all??
White ink is permanent, that's a myth that it isn't. It's just that the people saying that are so pale it just looks like scars... Look at white in any tattoo- it's white, not scars. Scars would leave a raised appearance.
Plus, then how would black people have white tattoos if they were just scars?
I can learn so much from these videos. they are just amazing
I'm black, will this anti-tattoo laser kill me?
No

I love all my tattoos and each one is a meaningful expression of my art. And I have them well over twenty years!
1:26 *oh boy your gonna love this dot tatoo you got there*
i'd ;love to see a educational video about how color tattoos react in darker skin
I was doing research for my psychology homework and somehow ended up here 🙄😅
Just got a tattoo last night on my back and arm. I somewhat enjoyed the feeling and I thought about this video while getting them
minute 1:00 I used a device like the center right one to tattoo "punk" on my knee when I was 16 :D it really was just a pencil with a sharpened needle on it and blue water colour and I kind of slapped the pencil with another stick. Now 11 years later it's still there. I wouldn't do it again though. It didn't get infected at all but it's just a blurry mess now :P
thats a cool story to share!
That's a great snapshot of the 16 year old who became you. I've always thought that tattoos are like diary entries that take a little more commitment than most. I bet that section of your life is just a little sharper in your memory than it would be had you not given yourself a daily reminder of it.
Makes sense , I always wondered how tattoos stayed on the skin .
Question answered , thanks
Do temporary tatoos exist? I'd get one of those, but nothing that will stick with me all my life.
Henna tattoos only last for about a month...
Yes, just go into any store and look either in the toys section or the art section.
I just got my first tattoo a month and a half ago, was so excited/nervous now I'm ready to just be covered in them
Omg. Now I don't want to get a tattoo even more. Piercing the dermis with a needle 3,000 per minute?! How does this not leave you scarred and disfigured? The scientific reality behind everything always makes it scarier.
The video didn't say anything about toxins and the ink doesn't have toxins in it anyway
yeah and vaccines cause autism /s
There are non-toxic dyes, and that is what they usually use.
This just made me want to not get a tattoo even more than before
*ok i get it they just use a needle with ink and it goes under your skin and the skin heals and its permanent*
Kat Von D at 0:15!
Can I just say that I loveeeeeee these videos! Huge TED-Ed fan ❤️❤️❤️
That sounds bad I don't want a tattoo
Same
yeah many diseases are spread through getting tattoos
When you can bust a myth but not a nut Diseases are only spread through the act of getting tattoos if you don't do your homework and go to someone who is certified. If you go to a certified shop they always use new needles every time thus making the chance of contracting an infection almost impossible. However if you go to someone who isn't certified they may reuse dirty needles and if the person who was tattooed before you had some sort of STD or whatever, you could get it too. So essentially you'll only get an infection if you're an idiot who doesn't go to a professional
Scout not really lol. I am in public health so try to argue.
