No, he's been using the RPB since he started playing. Almost his entire career, he is 2nd to Liu Guoliang to use the RPB. Both are the developers behind the RPB.

Ma Lin joined the Guangdong Sports District, and other PingPong players played for different provinces' sports districts. The Sports District system was learned from the USSR.
