Lane 8 Arps are simple but nice as heck. Wanted to create a video based on this for you guys knocking down those stereotypes that make you create Big Room arps... we need progressive arps.
This is a brilliant piece of music education. Zen does this fast 'cos he instinctively knows what's likely to work through experience and theory but follow these techniques and with bit of work that killer ARP is just waiting to be found. My big takeaway? He starts each one by finding the rhythm, not so much the notes. The note selection then follows from the rhythm as much as the chord progression.
@zenworld /// Hello, could someone help me? At the very beginning of the video at 3min30. Looks like, Abelton is giving him some automatic chords (3min35) following what he just did. Could we please explain. Could that help me? pleaseee
Hey there. I assume you’re talking about the chords that are located to the left of the playing field, in the darker grey area? You can place a scale or chords there and save it as a template for future use. Because they’re behind the play head, they aren’t played out and so can be considered a nice reference for you. I learned about this at “You Suck At Producing”’s video on lo-fi hip hop. That video taught me a ton of Ableton tricks for having near immediate chords at your finger tips. Not long and also very entertaining, give it a look. I don’t do anything lo-fi so don’t skip it because it’s not a genre you’re not into, it’s reference gold.
@@Artersa YES !! Yes that's exactly it! how i can go to set up this help on ableton. Should I check something in the ableton preferences ?? Thanks for your help ;)
Maybe it's a good idea to leave some notes out sometimes. Make some notes longer, other shorter. Bring some human factor into it. Add some randomness and it will be much much more cooler and non stiff sounding. Try to play the arp notes live with your keyboard and add swing to it at some positions. You will bring your arps on next level. Another great thing for a more vivid sound is to play with attack and release of your synth envelops and modulate for example the lenght of the release with an LFO. it's not a mistake to learn sheet reading and do some Bach stuff either. He's master of universe with arpeggios :) Have fun.
Similar to 5min22, there are notes not activated but where did they come from? Looks like it's ableton that automatically offers him. please help me ;) My english is so bad.
Never knew you could get results like this so quickly. I've been screwing around with the arpeggiator. I should have been doing this all along. Great tutorial!
Yesssss zen, you really helped me with this, thx, if you love arps listen to some funkin matt, hes a FUCKING god at that shit man, btw my arp leads always sound too harsh/too digital, any tips? Also that arp sounded sick, even in the beginning
Thanks Zen World.. was just listening to Lane 8 & Yotto I/Y and was thinking to add some arps in my latest track and this video was in my inbox.... spooky :)
I'm not Zen but....the drop is three/four main sounds, the lead, the bass stabs, bassline, and the sub (bassline and sub could be combined hence 3 or 4). They are as follows: Main Lead - three/four note plucky arpeggio following chord of bassline bass stabs - these are the key. They have stereo image (aka they're wide) and follow the bassline for note progression in 1/16th note fashion. sidechain to kick. similar to psytrance bass stabs. EQ out low end to give room for bassline bassline - reese bass with some top end and low end EQ'd out (if you split the sub). sidechained to the kick. Sustained note for entire bar. bass stabs should be same note as this sustained bassline. sub - same as bassline just the sub part so the mix is cleaner In terms of sound design, they are all saw based, besides the sub (sine based). main lead and bass stabs are saws with low decay/filter cutoff to make them plucky. bassline is dropped down an octave or two and still saw based just a bandpass filter applied on top. Hope that helps!
Just wanted to say a big thanks. The tutorials are really good. I am producing electronic music in various styles since 20 years and there is so much valuable info in there. Also sitting at home with a cup of tea and really enjoying a good programme instead of some crap on TV. So thanks man and keep it up!!!! Big up from Hamburg / Germany
Zen, another great demonstration. Do you always use the piano roll for arps? When do you use the midi arp plugin? Is it too limiting? Any advice on using the arp plugin?
Thank you very much, everybody can gain his knowledge by watching your tut´s. You are one of the nice guy´s of this platform and I am proud to be one of the first hours on your channel. It´t so nice to see how you forward musical information and inspiring people to make music.
Love this idea that you don't have to do the same rythm for a nice arp ! I wasn't think that but with you're tutorial I see it's work really well ! Thanks you for sharing this ^^
It's a sample from Sound Of KSHMR Volume 2 or 3, I don't remember. But I think Volume 2. I can't remember the name of the sample but there's a word "Ethnic". So look there for some Ethnic Ambience!

A good start is a square wave with the sync warp mode and having the sync be automated by a slow LFO
