The boomer energy is off the charts at these festivals. I don’t even go to them anymore it’s all older people that don’t know how to have fun and complain about everything. I was screamed at and assaulted at one for trying to push threw the crowd to get to the one pit one year. I think it tends to be because rock and metal fans of a band are very loyal and the quality and longevity is there for these bands, even the “lower billing” can have In Flames and Killswitch that been around for decades, but hip hop can’t have that so much because firstly the genre is younger and a lot of them pass away or go to other ventures so early (p diddy for example) so the festivals have to find new artists because that’s basically all their is

Don’t get me wrong. I love my legendary groups like Metallica, Korn, Megadeth, Ozzy, Iron Maiden, GnR, etc. but the rock scene has really done it to itself but hip-hop and rock have the exact opposite problems. In the rock world in every genre that is under rock, whether it be every genre of metal, punk, hard-core, hard rock about the mid-2000s something happened where I think you had certain people that really hated Nu Metal so in return you had a bunch of fans that later became bands focused on being so anti-accessible to newer fans that you have two generations of rock bands now that 80% of them will never know what it’s like to just do their band is their first job. There are countless interviews with bands that are over 10 years old where the guitar player in the drummer catch a ride to work together to go work construction somewhere.
In hip-hop it’s the exact opposite though. Yes they do make room for new blood where Rock does not but hip-hop doesn’t respect it’s legends at all. Dr. Dre, 2pac, Biggie, Eminem, LL Cool J, Snoop, Ice T, Jay Z, etc. are constantly being torn apart by new artist, and the youngest fans of the genre. Because I think in hip-hop, it’s just been hammered into peoples heads that wants something is more than six months old then it’s really “old.”
And of course not everyone is like that there are a lot of classic hip-hop fans out there but 4 million classic hip-hop fans don’t mean anything to 60 million or 70 million hip-hop fans that don’t care about anything that came out longer than five years ago .
But at least hip-hop can say they’ve got 60 to 70,000,000 fans wear in the Rock world after Metallica and Ozzy Osbourne and Korn etc. Once all of them retire, I think Metall and Rock are probably primarily going to crawl back into this sad state to where you’re not going to see like it big band touring NBA Arenas in having two opening acts it’s going to be for bands in clubs, playing in front of 500 people. Yeah you’ll still have these giant festivals with 600 bands for four days on them but as far as an actual tour? I think the rock fans have completely been so focused on making sure nobody likes the music, and that nobody gets paid that they’ve done everything to stop the life out of it.

Imo small bands should perform in big festivals and big bands perform on small AND big festivals, but small bands performing on small festivals won’t do any good to anyone, it’s quite literally a show thrown to waste. But let’s say there’s a 3 day festival, 3 big headliners for each day, and tons of smaller bands on each day before the headliners. people who have spent the tickets on 3 days and don’t want to waste it on only those 3 bands but instead they wanna see everything, which gives the smaller bands recognition especially if the small bands are there for a few years in a row (and some bands ofc spread to other festivals), people are gonna remember them too. Currently it’s like ”let’s keep big bands big and small bands small”

Most new blood isn't very good, frankly. The only artists I can think of that are "new" and move units are I Prevail and Turnstile (I think with Sleep Token we'll have to wait a year or two and see, even though I think the music is terrible I think there's a chance they end up being some fresh new blood), and they're already super high up on the very lineup in the thumbnail. We kinda already did all we can outside of invite artists that just don't belong on our stages making music that doesn't belong there (Post, Vert, etc).
    EDIT: forgot about Spiritbox

I completely disagree with you. There are plenty of bands that if you look at the reactor-sphere in youtube, are transcending the genre. Soo many rap fans are getting into metal, even metalcore and more "extreme bands". Case in point: Slaughter To Prevail, Lorna Shore. Hell Tool is a MAJOR favorite on youtube. So is Deftones and Slipknot.

@@andrewvasquez7872 more than half of the bands you've mentioned are headlining these festivals and 20-30+ years old.
Also deathcore in general is both:
      A. Mostly inaccessible shit
      B. Never going to achieve real lasting mainstream success. You'll never see Slaughter or Lorna headline something LTL or WTR, or even getting close to that

    • @Luissv72
      @Luissv72 ปีที่แล้ว

@@andrewvasquez7872 the fact that deathcore has been significantly bigger in the past and not gotten mainstream. Suicide Silence has been in the top 50 on Billboard multiple times and on Aftershock this year they're playing on the same level as Movements (a D Tier pop punk band) and could only just barely sell out a tour at like 1200 cap venues with heavy hitters in their scene Lorna AND Carnifex with them in 2022.
They're about to go on tour again w/Dying Fetus and Born of Osiris and haven't sold out a single venue as far as I can tell.
This stuff isn't marketable to a mass audience and never has been. Lorna got successful as a meme, to the general public they'd be a joke to be soon forgotten just like how they probably were for most people on TikTok (oh wow man make pig noises!). Sure it's exposure to the masses and probably created a few more metal fans, and I'll never discount how important stuff like that is
But to say they'll ever have the mass appeal bands like Slipknot, Tool, or Korn have is delusional. They could throw those Lorna/Slaughter on the headliner spots and promote them all they want, they're never filling a 40k person crowd.
People will leave before they come on the same way sizeable crowds left after PTV finished their sets on the I Prevail tour last year.

A great way to look at what’s popular is to look at the month listeners of bands on Spotify. Everyone in this comments are talking about Turnstile, and they only have 1.3mil listeners compared to Metallica having over 25,000,000 listeners. Guns N Roses have 25,000,000 as well. Now compare this to rap, all of the young rappers have 5x more than most rap legends.

The real problem is the tickets themselves. Not everyone can afford to shell out $100+ and no one's going to if there isn't legendary names attached. Someone could organize a fest with like 20 under 10 year old metalcore/deathcore/hardcore bands and it would sell, if tickets were like 50 bucks but with the bs ticketmaster and live nation are pulling, the whole thing would fall apart. Industry is just too f*cking greedy now that virtually no one is buying the music. Used to be the artist dependent on live shows, now the whole business is dependent on live shows.

I do understand the thing he’s talking about TikTok to a certain extent. And he is right there are other things you can do to where you don’t feel like you’re just following every little thing but at some point you have to realize that thing that you think is just for teenage girls isn’t it just for teenage girls, it’s for everyone, but because it wasn’t there when you were growing up, you just can’t throw the baby out with the bathwater.
OK, today in 2023 I’m pretty sure even for guys in their 50s that just wanted to get together and play cover songs at the local bar would even agree that having a TH-cam channel is a good idea because it’s something people can show their friends, and it helps get more people to the bar. Go back to 2008 when everyone knew what you two was but it hadn’t turned into what it is today, I was in a band, and as someone who wasn’t just some guy that only listen to Metall and had a 16-year-old mentality and listen to other genres and was into other things I was constantly trying to talk the other guys in my band into having one of the girlfriends or one of our friends set a camera up somewhere and record us at one of our shows. And having a TH-cam channel. TH-cam had been around for over five years at that point, but in 2008 even there were people that didn’t quite see it for what it is today and I was trying to tell the guys that look, this is how a lot of people find the music now is through TH-cam. I tried explaining to them that every young guy that I worked with instead of buying CDs or finding music the way that it was done in the 90s that most of the younger guys if they want to show me a new song they would just go to TH-cam. But of course everyone looked at me and since I listen to hip-hop and watch the NBA in the NFL this is all things that led to them having like a band meeting that was an intervention for me about my love for sports and hip-hop and that was kind of the last straw and I left the band. Fast forward two years later one of the guitar players is in a new band and they were actually doing pretty well and I saw him on Facebook sharing the bands, TH-cam video in 2010. Hell, if for nothing else, I really wanted to be able to show people when they have great my band was and I couldn’t even do that because these assholes we’re thinking TH-cam with some things only 13 year old girls watched.
I kid you not every time we would talk about how we were going to get our music out. You would think everyone had just watched some documentary about Metallica and we’re going to go to the studio and make a demo tape and make a set copies and start sending them to people . Look by this time CDs for already dying like music had gone digital and the band was really good but there was no one in there that I had an ally in that understood anything about the music business and everyone in there was stuck in 1985, so yeah, I kind of feel the same way about TikTok but if I ran a band. You’re damn right the band would have a fucking TikTok.

Just speaking for myself as a 49 yr old metal head of course anything new I'm gonna compare it to what I grew up on. And honestly I would love to hear something new, fresh and different. But I prefer artists that play or sing with their soul. Something sincere and you can feel in your bones. Not some band that unfortunately the industry are using as puppets in their pockets. And I don't care if someone has a famous father ,mother, cousin whatever that's famous. If the music has substance and soul then it can stand on its own. And to me all I've found is Vended

This is going to be a problem really soon. Metal and rock festivals are going to die off, if new bands don’t get bigger pushes and top billing. Obviously, there’s the issue of not giving a band like say Metallica the headliner position over some smaller/younger band. But Metallica isn’t going to be around forever. Ozzy isn’t going to live forever. Kiss are washed up and finally retiring after a long history of “this is the final tour!!” tours. There are good and great young bands out there. Code Orange for example. Or Ghost. And many more. Yes, we will all miss the legendary bands and favorites. Who won’t. You can blame the aging fan bases, promoters or bands themselves, blah blah blah. One thing is certain there’s a major problem waiting to be solved.

Post Malone would bring a lot of new people to the festival that normally aren't exposed to the world of rock and metal that you're used to existing in. They're going to be walking around checking out bands just like everybody else. You NEED new and young people to get into the genre or else every festival will just be grey haired old people.
