    Well this film took me back. I was a traffic officer during the 1970s and worked with some of the people in the film. Great shots of Oscar Control at Scotland Yard and West London Traffic Control centre. The Rover P6 with the 3.5 litre Buick engine and Borg Warner DG 3 speed automatic gearbox was one of the best police cars ever. There is no doubt that it was one of the best and most varied times I ever had in the police and I have done some different things I can tell you!

      @Andrew Wilson It's such a shame that the SD1 suffered greatly in terms of build quality. If the quality control issues were sorted out (or better still, didn't exist in the first place), BL and Rover could've been on to a real winner!
      They had the right idea, but the execution was far short of what the SD1 deserved!

    • @turricanedtc3764
      @turricanedtc3764 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@86501freightliner - As I understand it, the build issues with SD1s applied only to the earlier examples built at Solihull, which was the result of an unfortunate management decision - Solihull wasn't quite ready as a facility to build that kind of relatively advanced car reliably, though things did improve to some extent after a couple of years. Production switched to Cowley with the facelifted SD1 in the early '80s, and there were far fewer issues there.

    We had a real problem too in Ireland with too many fire engines and too many fire fighting personnel arriving at accidents and then staying too long sweeping the roads etc. A lot of the firefighters were part time so were dependent on call out income so that was the reason. One of the guys (garda) I once worked with and a firefighter were killed when a speeding car ploughed into them while they were dealing with an accident one night.

      @russthebiker 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      from memory they had high and low note horns and a relay to alternate them, the dynamos and alternators had enough trouble powering the blue lights and valve radio sets, once the BMW bikes came into being then electronic sirens were added

    • @contactacb
      @contactacb 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Early ones didn't and had limited blue lighting as well, through this period there was a gradual increase in provision of two tone sirens and better lights (see the 1980 GMP Motorbike wing video on here), through the 80's the standard provision of twin front blues, rear blue light on pole and two tones (later electronic sirens) with high viz markings became the norm - a notable exception being the Met's Special Escort Group who's bikes are far more subtly equipped and marked and who use whistles (it's not as crazy as it sounds, watch one of the various videos on here about them)

    Watching this, I couldn't believe the ARROGANCE of those drivers who were either done for speeding or drink-driving - it was as if they couldn't give a fuck for other road users who might get injured or even killed because of their recklessness. In one scene, a well-busted woman is pulled over and flaunts her cleavage in an attempt to sway the noddy. For those who don't know, officers on foot patrol are supposed to salute whenever an inspector passes by but if they're on motorcycle patrol they can't fucking do that, so they nod in acknowledgement - hence the nickname noddy.Anyway, getting back to the busty speeder; well, flaunting her boobs at the noddy clearly didn't get her anywhere! Right at the beginning is close-up of a nasty facial injury so, if you're going to convert this to mp4, it might be an idea to miss that out altogether.

So I was enjoying all the P6's in this video and the other police cars. I was a cop (Garda) in Ireland for 31 years - started in 1983 - a lot of it on the Garda motorbikes. Retired as a sergeant 10 years ago. We never had nice police cars - cortina Mk 4's, Sierra's, a few Montegos, Ford Mondeo's and Focuses. Now they use mainly Hyundai's - thank god I was gone when they came in. The traffic corps had Vauxhall Victors in the 70's and 2.0GL cortina's in the early 80's. The crime task force had 2.8 Mk II Granada's in the 80's - it was downhill all the way after that.
