    -----------
    In 1890 the Upper Rio Grande Valley's fortunes changed dramatically when Nicholas Creede discovered a high-grade silver vein in Willow Creek above the present-day town of Creede. Creede was the last silver boom town in Colorado in the 19th century. Mining camps that eventually consolidated at the mouth of Willow Creek Canyon to form the town of Creede quickly swelled to over 10,000 in an area of only 0.6 square miles, to provide labor for the Amethyst, Holy Moses, Commodore, Last Chance and Kentucky Belle mines, among others. By 1892 over a million dollars in silver had been shipped from the mines.
    Creede today depends on tourism for its survival, but this is still unspoiled Colorado, largely overlooked by most tourists. There are only 850 residents remaining in all of Mineral County today, roughly 300 of whom live in Creede, and the streets essentially shut down once the sun dips behind the Rocky Mountains. There's one small food market here, and one gas station. Creede is still, in a word, quaint.
    Join us as we explore Creede and its history, its mines, and its dispersed RV camping or "boondocking." We'll even travel underground into the Last Chance Mine and participate in the burro races of the Creede Donkey Dash!

    I bet you would love boondocking up the Wood River (although there are two USFS campgrounds up there) southwest of the little town of Meeteetse, Wyoming! There is an amazing ghost town up there called Kirwin! Kirwin is well-preserved as a result of a cooperative effort between some locals and the USFS. Amazing fact: Amelia Earhart loved Kirwin! She commissioned the construction of a home there, which was not yet completed when she left to circumnavigate the globe and she disappeared. In Meeteetse, there is a chocolate store for a rodeo cowboy who doubles as a chocolatier in his offseason. The drive from Meeteetse to Kirwin is spectacular! If you head to northern Wyoming I recommend it!

    Interesting video, Creede looked like a neat little town, the old mining area and buildings were really neat looking, and the burro racing was funny, great video, bet you can see a million stars in the sky at night, can you do time lapse or pictures of the night sky, would really like to see that. Travel safe.

    • @GrandAdventure
      @GrandAdventure  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The stars were amazing, Gary. Alas we're already several weeks out of the area. Interesting thought about a star-lapse. We haven't done one of those in quite some time, perhaps it's time to do another one the next time we're in a true dark sky area.

    Get your assess ready... Great adventure and episode, Marc. These are exactly the kinds of old Colorado mining towns I was referring to earlier.
    The views from your camping spot were tremendous as well. You added credence to Creede.
    What a great mine and tour they offer as well. I was wondering how that old ore processing plant, perched on the steep side of that mountain looked so sturdy after all these years.
    Then you showed a closeup of the building and those timbers were huge. You can't get anything like that today. With those massive timbers, that structure will be standing for a long time to come.

    • @GrandAdventure
      @GrandAdventure  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fingers crossed for good fishing for you. We drove up to the Rio Grande Reservoir during our visit last week and while it's been refilled, the water level is *very* low in that reservoir right now, probably secondary to the two-year drought that has persisted since they refilled it. However, the river is running clear.

    Hi, been watching your channel for awhile and this is one of my favorite videos. I live in the Rio Grande Valley...Texas that is. Was very interesting to see where the river starts. I've added Creede to our list of places to visit. Thank you! Quick question; I noticed a Rhino portable waste tank on the back of your RV. My husband and I have been looking at those. Some of the wheel reviews aren't very good. What are your thoughts?

    • @GrandAdventure
      @GrandAdventure  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for your feedback, Melissa! We actually just bought that tote tank a few weeks ago, so we really haven't put it through its paces yet. We've heard similar complaints about the wheels; however, there are numerous "quick fix" videos on TH-cam about how to re-engineer the wheels for durability.

    Had to watch your video again. I'm loving the area that you camped in. I will get the Dyrt when I start traveling, it looks like it's an amazing tool! The road to the Last Chance Mine, is it tame enough for a non 4x4 vehicle like my Sprinter? I'd love to go there. Very well done video Marc! I loved seeing the donkeys. 😁

    • @GrandAdventure
      @GrandAdventure  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Suzane! The west half of the Bachelor Loop is definitely negotiable via 2WD and allows access to the Last Chance Mine. The east half past Commodore Mine is a ridiculously steep dirt road (one of the steepest I've encountered) and thus they strongly recommend 4WD for that side.

    That was great video with a nice variety.
    When you used the Dyrt in locating your camping spot, did you also use a National Forest MVUM to get specifics with the Forest roads or did you just call the ranger? What a great spot!!
    The Bachelor Loop looked like an awesome drive and the tour of the Last Chance Mine looked impressive!
    Now that we also have a 4x4 Tundra, we won’t feel so afraid about taking some of these roads in your videos.
    Good timing with the Donkey Race. What a bonus for the video.

    Sure would like to hear more about how the Tundra has handled things. I have a 2020 Tundra with 5.7l and 4.30 rear end. I've been curious how large of trailer it could handle. Our 26ft travel trailer on flat roads here in Texas is not much for it, but I don't have experience in the mountains. Any info or video on your experience is appreciated.

    My wife and I love your TH-cam videos and watch them daily. After viewing them we’re considering to start boondocking. You do a lot of that, so I have to ask - do you run your RV air conditioner while boondocking? If so, is solar adequate or do you need to run it off your generator?we have a 2020 Grand Design Reflection 150 Series 295RL with one AC. Again, love the videos. Keep up the great work.

    • @GrandAdventure
      @GrandAdventure  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you William! If we need to run the AC while boondocking we will start up the generator. If we are going to have a protracted period of stifling hot weather that's when we will go to cooler temps at higher elevation if possible, and if not retreat to a hookups, like what we are doing right now preparing for this coming week's heat wave in eastern Montana. I will caution you, once you start boondocking you will never look at an RV park the same way again! 😄

    I have the dyrt pro and I could not find forest road 508 or any forest service road on the map west of Creede. I found a few campsites but nothing for boon docking.

    • @GrandAdventure
      @GrandAdventure  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You won't find FR-508 on The Dyrt PRO, Butch, nor will you even find it on Google Maps. The only place we found it was in satellite imagery and on the USFS MVUM. We used The Dyrt PRO to first find areas of public land, and their boundaries from private land. We then used the MVUM to identify roads and those upon which it's legal to camp. Finally we examined those in satellite view on The Dyrt PRO. There's not just FR-508, there are a lot of prime boondocking sites on other Forest Roads even closer to Creede, too.

    Good evening Marc! What a great video! Thank you for sharing your experiences in Creede CO!! Like for you, this was a HIGHLY anticipated video from you!
    And as said before, thank you very much for sharing a part of yours and Patricia's afternoon with us!! You showed that it is with reason that I highly regret only coming there for the day. There is so much to see in the greater region.
    Safe travels!!
    QUESTION: That camping within 300 feet of the centerline of the road: was that based on 300 feet from FR 508? Or, would it be 300feet from the trail that you were right next to?

    • @GrandAdventure
      @GrandAdventure  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Alan! We really enjoyed getting to know you and Heather a little bit better that day, thanks for joining us.
      I think that the answer to your question is a grey one. We might have been at or maybe slightly over 300' from the centerline of FR-508, which is probably the proper way to measure it because that little spur trail isn't mapped on the MVUM. But I don't think that it's clear that 300' from the centerline of that double-track road is incorrect, either. However, that was the only truly flat spot there and that double-track road was clearly heavily used.

    • @campingalan
      @campingalan 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@GrandAdventure Hi Marc....thank you for the prompt response!
      Ok...that makes sense to try to stick to measuring off of a mapped FS road. Thank you! I agree........making an attempt to meet the intent is always good. But, common sense should prevail with regards to being in a workable spot also. Plus, if one is still on a previously used area, I'd think that could/should be considered by the visiting ranger.
      You know where my property is. The guy that is trying to set up petroglyph tours there was told by the governing office that it is highly unlikely that he'd ever see a ranger in that area due to manpower limitations.
      PS. The godzilla made the trip well! 15-16mpg held, even including coming over the continental divide. I stayed in Colorado Springs last night and was able to time my departure from there to get to that Hwy 50 canyon closure 1 hour time slot about 20 minutes before it opened. It appears that DOT is recommending that you arrive before the 1 hour opens as they can only let so many vehicles pass through the canyon, 1 direction at a time. Or...just pass through it on the weekend as both directions are open all weekends.
      Have a good one!

      Thanks Michael! The Dyrt PRO's trip routing uses mapping databases that are licensed by The Dyrt. Just like any other mapping database, it's usually accurate but has the occasional error -- nothing is foolproof. One good thing about The Dyrt PRO's trip routing, however, is that it takes into account the height and length of your rig.
