  • Another wacky winner at Southwell! This time it's Andrew Breslin and Desert Boots who pass every single rival to win on the Fibresand for trainer Mark Johnston.

    I had to watch twice more to figure out where this horse came from in this race! As a lot of times last place winners end up running up the outside of the pack (and where I was looking). This time (unusually, no?) the leaders and the pack all swung wide (making the course longer!) and this one stayed the course on the inside (shorter). Unusual, to me anyway. Thanks for sharing!

      I had a friend in Australia decades ago who put some money into buying a racehorse. It had problems and was gonged out of a few races. Finally the horse was set for an inaugural race at a new race track. The horse had a bad jump from the barrier and was left behind. He ran like Desert Boots.....stayed on the inside rail and came up to pop up close to the end line way in front. Great race.

    As an American who is used to watching American thoroughbred races, it's a bit strange to see the way these horses enter the final stretch all spread out across the track unlike over here where they all bunch up on the furthest rail which rarely leaves an opening and causes many to get boxed in

    • @dv9239
      @dv9239 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    • @drudanng.8567
      @drudanng.8567 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@dv9239 I've never really viewed it as being unfair but that's because I never really thought about it since it's the norm over here... I've seen many races where the best horse couldn't get a clear path through because they were either accidentally or intentionally boxed in. It definitely makes it easier for jockeys to cheat and I'm not naming names but there are two who come into mind (brothers) who work together to help each other win. They've been caught cheating together but there's many times where they've gotten away with it. The American racing style helps dirty riders like them continue being dirty... Not only is it unfair but it's also dangerous. The way they bunch up together drastically increases the chances of a horse clipping hills with another and causing a catastrophic pile up. Afleet Alex's Preakness Stakes is a decent example of what I'm talking about. Scrappy T blew the turn and Afleet Alex nearly went down.

The Kentucky Derby is the only U.S. race that I can recall having more than that but I may stand corrected. That being said, if you watch nothing else except races that are held at California tracks, specifically Santa Anita, it's understandable to make the mistake of assuming that U.S. fields typically consist of 3 to 5 horses. Very well ridden race. It looks like a pretty tight turn and everybody except Desert Boots went wide. Normally in a sprint one would not get that chance, but from the back Desert Boots' jockey had a good view and could navigate the rail... it was his only chance, of course. In staying races it's a different story, and perhaps the king of comebacks is Calidoscopio, who as a 9 and 10-year-old entire did it in both at the Breeders' Cup Marathon and the Brooklyn Handicap (from 30 lengths back). It apparently was his idea of how to run a race, and at that age he should have some clue. In middle distance, Winx made a long career out of swooping wide from last to first around the turn into the straight, a tougher but much safer proposition than sneaking up the inside... good enough to win her last 33 races in a row.

    Phar Lap characteristically was held back behind the other horses in a race and came from behind to dramatically win every major horse racing contest in Australia, Mexico and the USA multiple times. Phar Lap is arguably the greatest racing horse in history. Phar Lap had an excellent pedigree on both sides and several positive qualities when he was purchased from his original owner in New Zealand and shipped to Australia, but at the time of his purchase he was small and emaciated. To rationalize his unprecedented success in winning races, Phar Lap was asserted to be a "freak" and not a normal horse, so that he could be weighted down verily heavily when racing to handicap him, and he still won.

    Reminds me of jockey Jack Kein at Cenntenial Race Track in Colorado. If it was a long race he would be last and end up winning. This was in the 80's. Great jockey. Thia was in the days of Billie Hunt, Jimmy Power, Gearge Munsell, Eddie R Caroll, Willie Shoemaker and so many other greats. Love horse racing, both Quarter horse and Thorobred.

      @DjWisdomUK 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      7 times or so I think I counted in the final 2f. Not sure what the rules are these days with over usage of the whip. Great ride though, happens quite a lot though on the AW horses from last to first. Maybe not from as far as that one off the pace though.

    • @orbit9965
      @orbit9965 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah, it's disgusting. they should stop hitting the horse. if the horse was truly enjoying it then the whip isn't needed. whips should only be used for light encouragement or for directional purposes. considering the age of these horses, this can cause long lasting physical and psychological damage

    • @orbit9965
      @orbit9965 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Michael Burkinshaw no? if they are enjoying it then they will run for miles.

      @@geordies1237 I race, and you are right it is only 7 times that im allowed to whip the horse, but unfortunately some horses need more than 7 whips, they are fetching in a new rule, and that is the whip can be used 10 times hard on the horses butt, which i agree with, but they could still put the amount of times the whip can be used, even higher.

    Secretariat used to win his races by coming from behind. The one race where Secretariat did not start out from behind was the Belmont.
    Secretariat took the lead from the start and continued to increase his speed throughout the race. I remember watching that race as a kind. It was incredible. That jockey could not have slowed down Secretariat if he had wanted to.
    I firmly believe many race horses know exactly what they are and revel in their power.
    This race is another example of a horse saying, "Yeah you think you are something? Let me show you what I can do!"

    • @johnhunter2294
      @johnhunter2294 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Everyone talks about Secretariat's Belmont, but to me his Preakness was even more incredible. He broke very poorly, was last on the first turn, and then decided he wanted to run up front. He passed an entire field of Grade I stakes-winners like they were standing still and had enough left in the tank to hold on and win. He was, indeed, a tremendous machine.

      Yep, well get called conspiricy theorists though but race fixing goes on much more often than die hard fans like to admit. And no jockey is innocent, as it often takes the whole field to be in on the scam to pull it off.
