@@MMM-wg2vm yes and no as NASCAR cup series engineers are masters in creating mechanical grip for their race cars to compensate for lack of aero. The car has quite a few modifications but in slow speed corners the mechanical grip matters way more. For the car to be be lapping quite a bit faster than the high downforce GTE counterpart, there needs to be a substantial amount of mechanical grip to help it out of slow corners and in the twisty bit of the circuit. But yes the Aero definitely helps in the high speed corners.

The qualifying lap was something like 3:49. In the days of GTE-Pro the 911 RSR managed a lap of 3:46.776, so yeah it’s quick. Can’t wait to see how it will go 😊
3:47 in qualifying... so splitting hairs. And we have to remember how incredible the BoP was for the 911RSR at the time.... The straight line speed and acceleration of the G56 from about 60-170 would make it a pretty challenging race for the GTE's v G56. I am actually glad the G56 is comfortable faster, even with the platinum drivers in the GTE's. It should keep from muddying up the GTE race at the front.
@@allansbullet Laptimes from the race showed that Rockenfeller and Button were a fair bit quicker than Jimmie Johnson and their bests were about 3.50 or so. Nah, the best part about road racing in the cup series is them beating and banging with each other in 3500lb bricks. The canards world be gone halfway through the first lap lol
This ting is running an unrestricted motor, it's currently producing over 1,000hp and torque. The GTs on the otherhand are restricted by BoP, and most of the GT field is pushing between 520 to 550 hp, ditto for torque. They also shed 400 pounds (around 180 - 190kg of the top of my head) so weight is similar to the GTs aswell. So this modified and unrestricted cup car beating the GTs on the straights is a forgone conclusion.
@@jessekleidon9503 I've read where it's producing about 800hp. If it is 1000hp, 24 hours. Crazy. It's also running carbon brakes instead of steel. I still think this is all pretty great. I hope she survives 24 hours.
@@jessekleidon9503 The article I read said this engine is restricted to 670 hp. Still more than the GT cars, but not twice as much. Also, these engines don't make that much torque. They make horsepower with RPM, not torque. I believe, unrestricted, the numbers are around 700 ft-lb peak torque and 900 peak hp at the tires.
The car looks and sounds great! Much faster in the corners than I thought it would be. I think they'll hold their own just fine for the 24 hours. My gut feeling is that NASCAR as a sanctioning body is using this as a testing ground to make their product better in their own series. It would be cool if they were able to create their own stock car class at Le Mans and run it every year though. You wanna talk about growing the sport globally, creating new fans and not being looked at as a laughing stock in the racing world, then there you go. This would go a long way in doing just that. As long as they don't screw it up!
I thought the same thing. But then I thought about it a little harder. And I realized having 35 Cup drivers suddenly in the LeMans field would cause major chaos. If you've seen how these guys drive at road courses, it's not exactly respectful. Cup drivers aren't bad road racers they're just brought up with a different mindset, a mindset that turns road races into demolition derbies. Very fun to watch when it's just them. But extremely inconvenient for the WEC field I'm sure to have them all there not giving anything up.
@@BoBo-pl3ww well I'm assuming if they made it part of the NASCAR calendar even if it wasn't a points race the regular cup teams would be the ones participating. Obviously they might have some other people being drivers since you need more than one. Actually I just had a thought. Most NASCAR teams have more than one driver. So if each team fielded one car they'd have 3 or 4 drivers to drive the car. And that would cut the field of CUP cars down to 10 or less. It could work

Honestly, NASCAR should be like more like this. In my opinion nascar should consist of hopped up race cars that resemble street cars, but they should also have a hopped up police car in the back, chasing them and spinning them out one by one until there’s one left and we declare that person the winner or they reach the 500 miles just like the good old moonshiners
When I watched an interview with Jensen Button and he kept going back to just how much fun it was to drive this car. After seeing this on board lap its no wonder. That Chevy is a BEAST!! 🇺🇸💪
Please, can everyone just say 'cup Car' instead of 'the Nas-car'? It is a NASCAR Cup car, not a NAS car. I know the mistake is quickly made and not on purpose, but c'mon...
Ehh im a huge NASCAR fan and I'd call it a NASCAR. If I was trying to be more specific ids say a CUP car but if I was just generalizing I'd just say it's a NASCAR. I've called them NASCAR'S my entire life. I'd only use "cup car" or "sprint car" as a clarifier. That only tells you which division they are, all of them are NASCAR. Id call both CUP and Xfinity cars NASCARs and I'd call the Truck series, well I'd just call them "the trucks". This cars mechanical grip has to rival any car currently as for its size it’s very grippy and nimble!!
Most of the grip comes from the additional aero
@@MMM-wg2vm yes and no as NASCAR cup series engineers are masters in creating mechanical grip for their race cars to compensate for lack of aero. The car has quite a few modifications but in slow speed corners the mechanical grip matters way more. For the car to be be lapping quite a bit faster than the high downforce GTE counterpart, there needs to be a substantial amount of mechanical grip to help it out of slow corners and in the twisty bit of the circuit. But yes the Aero definitely helps in the high speed corners.
Very good choice of driver too! He's a former le mans 24hr champion and he was a factory DTM driver for Audi. You can tell he knows this track well. What a cool car/driver combo
@@booyah8848 yes, but the engineers are very limited in what they're actually allowed to do in the actual series, these cars have almost no mechanical grip, they have no special engineering or anything crazy, its a stock car, its just a frame, a body and a a v8, the only reason it has grip is because of the aero package on that thing
@@mailboxmedia6655 that is simply not true. These cars aren't stock at all. It's a spec chassis built by a single supplier. It has a 5 speed sequential transaxle that's mounted in the rear of the car for balance. All the chassis as I said are identical spec chassis. They have a composite body shell that is identical across all the cars except for the front clip which is manufacturer specific. In other words. Nothing on this car is stock they're purpose built spec racing chassis. They have full independent suspension in the front and rear unlike the last generation which had a solid axel. The suspension can be turned to create all kinds of different set ups and grip levels.

@@mcloviinz i know but thats like calling the 919 evo an lmp1 car and saying lmp1 is faster than pre-18 f1 cars. It doesnt follow the requirements of a cup car, hence is not a cup car. Pretty simple. The engine is not restricted either and produces much more power.

@@Oat_meal_YT these things do 200 in their lowest power setups at the super speedways. This one is dialed to 11 for lemans. They took something like 400 pounds out , swapped the body and brakes to carbon, and removed the restrictors.

That is awesome, and you have some incredible talent to see this succeed. Good luck Garage 56.
On this lap I timed it at about 3:58 off the video, but I think it probably has a bit more in it yet. Hell of a beast, and GREAT sound!
@@allansbullet Laptimes from the race showed that Rockenfeller and Button were a fair bit quicker than Jimmie Johnson and their bests were about 3.50 or so. The car finished behind eight GTE cars and was lapping at about the same speed at the end of the race. But it finished and it didn’t finish last, which were the team’s objectives.
@@thethirdman225 Yeah mate. Just finishing at Le Mans is a hell of an achievement - especially on their first try!

Thank you very much!
They should make this into the standard "Road Package" for the cup series. It would make the racing so much more interesting
The teams would probably complain it's expensive, but it's so cool
Nah, the best part about road racing in the cup series is them beating and banging with each other in 3500lb bricks. The canards world be gone halfway through the first lap lol
@@legolite45 A new division at the Rolex 24 might be possible. Some of the team owners in NASCAR have some pretty deep pockets
This car has made history
I was led to believe it was slower than than the GT's on the straights. The video proves otherwise. 😊
@deezoG8 smaller than an M4 GT3 lol
The sound is just so beautiful
@@andrewesau51 more like 10-15 cup drivers. Also, who said Americans would be driving? Maybe some EU folks will want to participate?
@@BoBo-pl3ww well I'm assuming if they made it part of the NASCAR calendar even if it wasn't a points race the regular cup teams would be the ones participating. Obviously they might have some other people being drivers since you need more than one. Actually I just had a thought. Most NASCAR teams have more than one driver. So if each team fielded one car they'd have 3 or 4 drivers to drive the car. And that would cut the field of CUP cars down to 10 or less. It could work

I watched most of the 24 live on Motortrend. I was surprised at the lack of TV time for this car. I know that battle in Hypercar was so compelling, but a little more coverage would have been appreciated, given the pre-race hype.

Very interesting that the Nascar is so much faster than the GTE AM Cars pity that we have the Nascar only in Le Man's I would love to see the cars Performance on the other tracks
It would definately be closer. The nascar is extremely quick in a straight line and le man's has such a long straight. Other tracks dont
Also the NASCAR engine makes well over 900HP but it has a spacer on it that limits it to 680HP, imagine if they decided to run without the spacer.

Honestly, NASCAR should be like more like this. In my opinion nascar should consist of hopped up race cars that resemble street cars, but they should also have a hopped up police car in the back, chasing them and spinning them out one by one until there’s one left and we declare that person the winner or they reach the 500 miles just like the good old moonshiners
would be interesting
So I really don't think there's a issue calling this car a "NASCAR" because that's what it is. Even life long die hard fans use the term in that way.
