    I don’t know why his songs always reflect his life. They are memoirs instead of a book. But it hits you in your heart and your gut because you know what he sings is what he felt. You’re right. It does hit us because we all have gone through it. To have that voice singing the pain he feels of course transfers to us. What a gift he had. Not only how emotive he sings, but that voice of his just reaches one’s soul. Thanks Seph. 😢😢❤❤

    Wonderful reaction and perfect ranking for such a touching song Seph THANK YOU. Yes, Red West who wrote this Brilliant song sung BRILLIANTLY by THE ELVIS was Elvis friend since his schooldays, and though he and his brother Sonny West were sacked as bodyguards on July 5th 1976, there was still a friendship and respect the two men shared until Elvis passing on August 16th 1977. I bought Sonny West's book from New York which is very good, honest and interesting, and also (through my friend Lee who met Sonny West) have a signed printed colour picture of Elvis and Sonny together backstage in late 1973. Have a good evening!😀♥

    Roy Orbison is someone famous for his "hurtin' songs," but Elvis proved here - and throughout his career - that he took a back seat to no one when it came to singing such songs. This song and "It's Midnight" are probably Elvis' best "hurtin' songs" from the 1970s.

    Richard Mainegra had the following to say about the song. "It's a big understatement to say getting an Elvis cut was the highlight of my career. At the time, I was only 22 and right out of Slidell into the music business. I was very excited to be doing what I'd always wanted to do. I'd only had about three songs cut so far --- the Yellow Pages, Gary Puckett, and Pat Boone. I had stars in my eyes, but I wasn't prepared for what was about to happen.
    Red West, who co-wrote the song, was one of the 'Memphis Mafia' - Elvis' bodyguards and buddies. At the time, he was heading the publishing company I happened to stumble into a year earlier. One day I had a melody going that Red really liked, so he began writing lyrics to it. Before long, he had a look of real excitement in his eyes as if he knew we had something special going. We started leaning the story line toward Elvis' break-up with Priscilla and how it affected their daughter. He told me when it was finished Elvis was going to cut the song. I let that go in one ear and out the other. I thought, 'No way!' First of all, why would Elvis want to sing about his personal life that was already being dragged through the media every day? And, secondly, there was no way little ole 'small town, green me' was going to get a song cut by the one artist every songwriter in the world wanted to sing their song!

      Nothing to do with Elvis and his unworthy ex-wife P'zilla Wagner Beaulieu. Red was writing about his own marriage breakdown. EP couldn't care less about P'zilla....he did care very much about his beloved daughter, though. Let's focus on that aspect as it would have been what Elvis was connecting this song with.
      Edit: the only song Elvis sang in reference to P'zilla was "devil in disguise". Everything else he chose for his beloved parents, daughter, friends and fans.

    Comment disappears when I put the link in of where Red’s interview is regards originally writing the lyrics based on his own marriage (below); he thought Elvis might want to record it, so changed the gender of the child in the last verse so it would apply to Lisa Marie.
    “I was back here in Memphis and my wife was in L.A. I was writing for Chips Moman, producing and everything else. “Separate Ways” came to me from my own situation. Then Elvis had his own situation with Priscilla and that song fit perfectly. I was writing about my son, Brent but then we changed it so it would relate to Lisa Marie. We changed the line 'the tears that he will cry' into 'the tears that she will cry'. Elvis would never ask me if I had any new songs. I would write one and then I'd say 'I've got a new song’.”

  • @Elvista
    @Elvista 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    Just to clarify to those misinformed.....this song was written by Red West about his own relationship breakdown, nothing to do with Elvis' ex P'zilla. Red asked EP to sing it for him. Elvis agreed, changed a few words to the song and sang it, beautifully as always.

    It Could be Charlie singing with him but it sounds more like Elvis singing his own backup vocals.
    When Elvis found out about the affair, the guys had to talk him down, because he was ready to go do some serious bodily harm to Mike Stone, (the Karate instructor).
    Mike Stone was Elvis's Friend, he hired him to teach Priscilla Karate while Elvis was on tour, because he wanted her to be able to protect herself and Lisa should anyone ever want to harm them when he was away. ❤
