I can see now that I made the mistake of a lifetime back in 1979 by taking a night train from Zurich to Vienna. I did it because I was still cash-poor and didn't have a credit card yet, and the night train saved me one night's cost of places to stay. Definitely need to fix this the next time I'm in Europe!

My mother and I did the same journey back in the early 2000s but stopped in Salzburg for a couple of days, doing The Sound of Music tour and visiting Mozart’s house. The two trains that we travelled on were totally different as they had the individual compartments rather then open plan which always reminds me of train travel in the olden films 😂 All three cities were different but equally as nice. Need to repeat the journey once we can travel more freely 👍👍 Thanks for bringing back wonderful memories 🥰

This was a nice trip to end 2020. The scenery was wonderful, especially the villages in the valleys and the tall mountains all around. It would be worth taking this trip just for the scenery, even if you had no other reason to go to Zurich. It was a shame the restaurant card scanner wasn't working on an 8-hour journey.

When I feel comfortable traveling again, my first trip from America will be to Switzerland to visit my Sister and her Husband who live just outside of Zurich in Zug, Switzerland. Thank you for taking us along for the ride! 👍🏻

Great video of one of Europe's most scenic railway trips, and really coverage of the most importants points of the trip for anyone who after viewing this video wants decides to take this trip.
Dylan correctly points out that upon arriving in Switzerland at Buchs, there is a delay while the locomotives are changed. The Austrian engine is detached and a Swiss engine attached at what was the rear of the train. Thus, if a rider was on the left side of the train facing forward, that seat will then be on the right side of the train facing backward.
I took this train in October 2016. Based on that experience, the view from either side of the train are roughly the same from Vienna to Innsbruck. After Innsbruck when the train climbs up into the Alps, the majority of the time the train was on the left side of the valley and thus the seats on the right side of the train (facing the locomotive) had the better views.

    • @keithparker2206
      @keithparker2206 3 ปีที่แล้ว

A loco change at Buchs only occurs with a loco-hauled IC or EC train. Railjets simply reverse direction as they are a fixed formation and the loco is fitted with the narrower pantographs required on the swiss system.

Excellent video of a very scenic journey Dylan. I took this same service in June 2019 and was also delayed. On the way out the train was diverted via Zell am See therefore even more scenic. If travelling from U.K. to Vienna this is the best way to go with an overnight stop in Zurich. If starting from Budapest the train passes through 5 countries. Our outward train terminated in Budapest.

There is a reason why OBB is typically the most commonly top rated rail system & operator in the world. The constant theme I find with anyone who has ridden with them is staff friendliness, comfort, great OTP (of course there is always going to be some late or early trains, that's just the nature of transit), and of course, if not the most loved part, the scenery! The only way to create the perfect, unbeatable rail experience would be if you combine that reputation & service of OBB, and combine it with the speed of Japan's Shinkansen bullet trains.

    • @Kullioking

Dylan, I have to say you did leave the best of your Europe 2020 rail journeys to the last and wow! I'm very impressed with the appearance and layout of the carriages on this trip. I wish we had something like this downunder.
This journey from Vienna via Salzburg to Zurich has always been on my bucket list and, if we get to travel again before my age and health prevents it (and if I can afford it of course), I would love to do this one, as well as travel on a SwissRail Pass throughout Switzerland. You were blessed to have a beautiful late summer day, a sensible schedule (09 20 until 17 20 plus 30 mins late running) and spectacular scenery. OBB Railjet has gone into my travel memory bank! One bit of levity based on your loo with a view reminded me of a comical incident that I'll leave with you for a chuckle.
Way back last century, i was taking care of business in my motel room in Gladstone, Queensland, when I saw across the room through the window an approaching coal train heading to the port. The backdrop to the view was so impressive, that I quickly exited the ensuite 'in the buff', grabbed my camera and captured the view (on real film in the pre-digital age). It's the only railway photo I have ever taken without a stitch of clothing on. I wouldn't do that these days. Stay safe and I look forward to next week's contribution.

Travelling up the Arlberg pass (even on a Railjet) is hardly high-speed! There are frequently points where the Railjet struggles to make 40kmh (emphasised by the displays in Railjet coaches showing the current speed). Means more time to enjoy the view.

Excellent video as usual, Dylan. I noticed that at 5:06, you gave us "a look around the seat," as opposed to the usual seat tour 🙂. As for the broken card machine, I generally carry more cash with me in Europe as I've experienced that, or machines which don't recognise British cards a few times. It can avoid a lot of embarrassment, especially if you've just filled your car with petrol (as happened to me in Germany in 2005.) Also, a lot of debit cards charge about £1.50 On foreign transactions, which can add up on small amounts. I keep any euros I've got left over for my next trip.

It was, a little less nowadays if you take the faster route by the gothard base tunnel. You can still do the older route, but most of the trains now go by the base tunnel.

    Great video! Thank you.
I loved that the train seemed so sparklingly clean, especially the windows which made the views even more spectacular!
I travelled by train in Switzerland in the 1970s (!) from Geneva to Lausanne, then up to Interlaken, and on to Zurich. It was magical - right up at the very top of my best travel experiences ever! We also took a side trip on a small train from Interlaken to Wengen. Gorgeous.
Switzerland by train should be on everyone’s bucket list.

Wow, I really ended up having a few near encounters with the rail travel TH-cam community last September, on the 6th I arrived at Berlin Hbf about 20mins after AndyB Travels had left and then I caught the Nightjet to Venice from Vienna later in the evening on the same day you filmed this! Definitely seems like everyone was making the most of the few weeks of relaxed travel restrictions 😂😂

Great video.!!! I travelled railjet very often cause I work for ÖBB. But Linz has 206.500 inhabitans and not just under 20500. It is the third largest city but the second largest conurbation with over 800.000 people :-)

In terms of scenery, you could have done even better by taking the EC train "Transalpin" from Graz to Zürich. While your train avoided the heart of Austrian Alps by taking a northern route through Linz, Salzburg and Rosenheim, the mentioned EC train goes straight through it, taking the wild alpine route via Selzthal, Bischofshofen, Zell am See, Saalfelden, Kitzbühel to Wörgl - yes, some of the most prestigious ski centres in Austria just listed :)
As an icing on a cake, that trains also has the 1st class Panorama car of SBB. Worth taking a ride in any way. Especially in the winter!

The panorama car on EC 163/164 Transalpin is wonderful, although I liked the second class ÖBB cars more than the SBB EW 4 that are used today.

Lived in the town of Wädenswil back in 2019 for an exchange semester. Often saw the railjets passby along lake Zurich (even the Orient Express one night!). I remember seeing Walensee around February when there were still snow at the top of the mountains in the way to Sargans for a day trip to Liechtenstein. Great video!

A really stunning trip through the Alps. I hope you'll plan further journeys through Germany especially through Southern East of Bavaria up to Salzburg. The region is called Berchtesgadener Land and is part of the National Reservation. You will like it, just come and visit it. The pandemic situation will come to an end and everything will be ready for tourists. Greetings from Germany. 🙂

Lovely video 👌🏼 if I remember correctly the restaurant car was operated by a another brand before, I think I was called Henry's, oh it was lovely. And the crew doesn't change in Buchs. Sometimes the Swiss Conductor goes as far as Innsbruck and the Austrian sometimes to Zurich

Most enjoyable. FYI I did the same trip Zurich-Vienna with an overnight stop in Innsbruck over 40 years ago. At that time there were no border checks when running non-stop between Zurich and Innsbruck via Germany.

If you want spectacular scenery then you should consider reviewing the Rocky Mountaineer which runs between Calgary and Vancouver in Canada, if you haven’t done so yet.
I traveled on it back in 1997 and it was an absolutely fantastic experience.

This was a nice, beautiful, video and travel experience. I will take this train. Wien hbf is one of my favorite midetn train stations. I travelled there when I visited Wien in August 2019. For a small city, there are way too many castles there. No wonder the people did away with their nobility. LoL Keep up the good work.

Last Saturday I was on board RJX60 from Vienna to Munich in 1st class and I was really impressed!
Nice train, comfortable seats and a good selection of foods and drinks despite COVID-19 (restaurant was open!)👍
