Not surprised by your take on this at all and I haven’t even had a chance to get the new Saxon yet. But I will. I love Maiden. But…their last few albums are exactly how you described them. All your critiques are pretty much spot. Vocals sound strained, songs are too long, and not enough fire power. Always some good songs but just not enough. Still better than most. Great video
I have been a fan of Saxon since the 80s. Denim & Leather and Power & The Glory picture disc were albums I bought as soon as they came out. I must admit, however, that I only recently started listening to the new stuff and I must say it blew me away! They are once again one of my favourite bands. They are not just good for old men they are excellent full stop!!
Hey Chris, you start off right, props to both for still being relevant for the past 42 years and keep pushing to make new music. Its always good when a new Maiden album comes out and then a new Saxon BOOM Bonus !!! Yes you express your point well on the length of the song could they have been edited down or maybe remove a few to bring the whole album length down. To be fair I have not heard the Saxon album yet but their last few albums have been really good. So I can't compare yet but you have really made me put Saxon new one near the top of my current wants list. Thanks for the review !!!! cheers- VK
Hey Chris. So great of you to join in yesterday. It was fun! I have Saxon’s Denim and Leather and The Power & The Glory. Both great ones. Love the cover of the new album. Awesome review of both. Will have to check out the new Saxon. 😊
Hey Chris, nice review! Both of these albums are out if my wheelhouse, so I’m just enjoying your critique with no bias. I think I’ll pick up the Saxon record. Appreciate ya, man. 👊
Comparing these two albums there are two key points: first is the is the length of the songs. For Maiden album, it exists ''EPIC'' songs which are so spirited that they are slowly losing their meaning. However, in the case of Saxon album, there is also an EPIC song like ''pilgrimage'' but it is much shorter and gives a much greater atmosphere; second, is the production design. In the case of Saxon Carpe diem album, it is strong and clean with a bridge guitar impression, while in the case of new Maiden album, the production by today’s standards seems empty, which is a bit unacceptable.
Odds are slim I will ever hear either of these albums but I love your honest take on what will probably be an unpopular viewpoint. Great double review! 🤟🏻🤟🏻🤟🏻
Saxon have been bringing strong albums out for the past 20 years. Lionheart is one of my favourites and an absolute master piece, the last Maiden album I liked from start to finish was probably Brave New World. Senjutsu was a return to form for Maiden though, probably the best since Dance of Death for me.
I've not listened to Saxon since the mid 80s. My mate was a huge fan and I kinda liked them but I was not a huge fan. However I stumbled across this the other day and it has just blown me away. It's everything you say. Clean, punchy and memorable. Funny enough I only realised in the last few years that Princess of the Night was about a steam locomotive. My mate has never even clicked in all this time. I really love it now and hearing Age of Steam is really special. Dambusters is amazing and I can't stop singing 'Carpe Diem!'. It's great to hear something memorable after you thought that nothing could surprise you in old age. Nice one Saxon :-)
I love both bands but have to admit I was a bit underwhelmed by Senjutsu especially compared to Carpe Diem. Still proud of both bands and own all of their output on vinyl and cd. As long as they knocked out I'll pick em up. 👍🇬🇧
I don't dislike senjutsu but I listened to it like two times and that's enough for me, so far. The new saxon album sounds great !! the album cover and everything feels like classic saxon. I think some bands get like overconfident or arrogant when it comes to writing something different, and some are somewhat arrogant and don't give a damn about not changing -much- the sound of song structure, and saxon is one of those bands, that's why they are consistent and getting better and better album after album.
Bought the new Saxon album last Friday. It has been the only thing in my car this past week. At least 20 listens so far. Top to bottom, best metal album I've heard in the past 10 years and the best by Saxon.. Great production, length of songs, lyrics, vocals and playing is top notch. Enjoyable at at volume and not hard on the hearing......
Interesting to hear your thoughts on these albums Chris. For me Saxon is middle of the road playing it safe HM while Maiden is a bit more creative. I think the Maiden had some stronger songs, but lower lows. Interesting to see how far these bands have come since the beginnings and the fact they are both putting out strong albums.
Amazing Comparison of two Albums between 2 Great bands! I think it doesn't sound crazy that Saxon's album is better than Maiden..I am fan of both Bands, but for sure Saxon have better Albums ( the average) than Maiden since 1995..We like it or not this is the truth! NEVER SURRENDER MATE!
This is a very good video. I have been a Maiden fan for over 40 years and I thought Senjutsu was a very good album albeit the long songs may not be so good live. It is no surprise that my favourite track is Stratego which is classic Maiden. Back in the 80s and early 90s I liked Saxon but haven't listened to any of their "new" albums since then. I had seen so many comments about Carpe Diem I was intrigued, put it on and was blown away! It transported me back to the 80s and Biff's voice sounds the same as it did then! I had expected some change so I went back to some of the albums I knew just to check! (As an aside, Dallas 1pm is still a brilliant track). I love the punchy songs on Carpe Diem which, as you state, "don't outstay their welcome". It is interesting that Steve Harris stated that his time with British Lion (another great band) has helped in write shorter songs! I couldn't state a preference so will just be happy that both bands are still producing great new music. However I now have 25+ years of Saxon back catalogue to go through!
Finally someone who agrees with me that Bruce (sadly) doesn't "still have it" as all reviewers say... and that the songs are way too long and drawn out. Maiden's last few albums are a snoozefest for the most part...
Why does it always have to be better than or best???!!! I enjoy both for different reasons and thankful that they're both still giving us fans the good stuff (like Priest with Firepower). Senjutsu is my current favourite for sleepytime metal and chillin' on a Sunday. Btw I also love Carpe Diem, great driving tunes- like most of their stuff. Been listening to them for 41 years, since 15 year old me checked out Denim & Leather on import, liked the song names, and took a chance on it. I regret never having seen them in concert, though. Last time they toured North America with Rainbow, I couldn't get anybody interested to go, even my wife whom I've mostly converted from country lol. I won't make that mistake next time, I'll go alone if I have too!
If I am correct, you have the same Yamaha cassette deck that I have. Didn't half improve the sound quality of my old tapes (and I had the Denon DR-171 bought back in the 80's too).
Same here. I've only played maiden straight through once since it came out. Carpe diem has been on my turntable over a dozen times already. On this outing Saxon wins.
Saxon for sure. I really like the Maiden album but it took a while to grow on me. Carpe Diem hit instantly. Has more power and does not meander like the Maiden record. For me, Saxons last few albums are far better than both Maiden and Priests later efforts. BTW, I love Biffs appearance on the Amon Amarth song Saxons and Vikings. Killer song!
interesting video thanx for it ....question :what is the advantage in studio for maiden to insert three guitars into a track one is enough with nowadays technology you can push the limits in infinate ways so what is the idea from harris to complicate the process with three f...g guitars ...;-)
@@ChrisPropfeMusicallyObsessed agreed. But if we're comparing the last two albums from each band Saxon for me is the clear winner. It's a really good album top to bottom. I saw Saxon on the Power and the Glory tour. They opened for Maiden on their Piece of Mind tour. Saxon was brilliant, Iron Maiden was dull. Seriously, I became a Saxon fan that night and never really got into Maiden after that. This was in 1983.
