I really wish they would do a "kiosk" dashboard, where you can set it to remove the side and header bars for a public facing dashboard. I know there are add-ons that will do that but they can break or be unsupported so an official implementation would be super useful where you have a dashboard the whole family can use but you don't want, say, the kids being able to mess around with it.
Exactly. And also the available layout tools are a mess. There are no layouts out of the box, that just scale the cards to a certain screen size in width and in HEIGHT. Even the new sections tool does not (in height). Why not let the user decide how many rows and columns they want to have and just fit the cards on the screen regardless of how small or big the cards will be? Let the decision to the user. No one wants a dashboard, where you need to scroll or where half of a card is out of the screen. Fixed card heights make no sence at all when building a good looking dashboard layout.
The KNX additions are super cool. Imagine having a 20y old smart home (the term did not even exist back then) now showing up as a SINGLE integration with >400 entitities for lights, shades, heating, PV and weather in Home Assistant. There is no better way of building a sustainable, long-term smart home that will last for decades. Super happy with it … since 2006!
Really happy to see the RGB CCT change, for those of us using RGB strips with the extra WW/CW colour channels this is big. Before this update after every HA restart/update I had to login to each WLED device, change an option in preferences, reload the HA integration then go back into WLED and change settings back. Now I can restart HA without losing control of my lights!
Added lately to the release note (and by myself 😅): picture cards can now automatically fetch its image from a person entity, instead of setting a static image !
If the smoke detector in my office triggers, my soldering iron, hot air station, and PCB pre-heater all get turned off. The ability to monitor a soldering iron isn't just a novelty or a flex. ;)
Some nice additions there! I do agree that renaming service to action probably makes more sense to most people, however it makes the yaml look very odd as you have an action element in the action section!
Improvements are on the way in this regard! Unfortunately, we weren't able to finish that up for this release. Hopefully next one 🙏 One step at the time, we always iterate in the open, so this is at least an iteration we felt was good enough to ship already.
Turning off your soldering iron when you leave home so that you don't forget. I wish they had this integration with hair straighteners, it would save at least 2 minutes for my wife to get out of the house 🤣 (Yes I know I can use a smart plug. I was being sarcastic. )

Well, I appreciate the fact that the home assistant team stays on top of things is always updating. Always upgrading and making things better. It sure is a pain in the ass to just be able to enjoy home assistant. It seems like every time they do an update you have to relearn home assistant. For the layman like me or the average user that just wants a smart home and doesn't want to fiddle with it 24/7. It's really starting to push me away.
Heads up for anyone using the Alexa Media Player through HACS: The 2024.8 update introduces a breaking change. To avoid issues, make sure to upgrade to the latest version of Alexa Media Player via HACS. If you rely on the built-in temperature sensor on your Alexa device, ensure you enable the "Include devices connected via Echo" option under configuration. Otherwise, any temperature-based automation will fail because the temperature data will be unavailable.
thanks for the info on the update, going to start working my HA into something useful, got the smart lights, the door sensors and the temperature monitors, now just need to fit and get them talking
You should certainly give KNX a try. The learning curve is pretty steep, but it's super fast and reliable. I'm in the middle of a complete house renovation, and went with KNX at the frontend and HA behind it for all the fancy stuff. All the heating, lighting & security is now wired so no worrying about batteries or WiFi interference, even the Everything Presence Lite devices are wired for 5V DC.
You‘ll love it. I live in a KNX home since 2006(!) and it still puts all other technologies to shame, regarding openness and reliability. 8000 devices from 500 manufacturers and built to last for decades. I never once regretted to go with KNX.
Hello Everthing Smart Home, could you kindly consider a "where to start" guide to home assist for noobs? maybe even a list of the vidoes on this channel to start with?
Hey Lewis, didn’t I hear you needed a new soldering iron anyways? We all want a follow-up video of you configuring your soldering iron in home assistant 😂
I hate that "ollama" is everywhere instead of just using real OpenAI compatible APIs, which ollama is supposed to offer as well. Then it would work with everything, not just with toy deployments of LLMs.
Why is it that we will soon be nearing the end of 2024 and still don't have a remotely decent voice assistant with off the shelf hardware to match? Year of the voice was a complete bust. If the HA team could actually finish a project (of course it will always be ongoing) as worth wild as the voice assistant, they would be doing themselves a huge favor. And yes, I have seen all the poor DIY hardware solutions to date...yes, all of them. It's sad when your voice assistant makes Siri look like a genius with a 140 IQ. Google/Amazon, 160+.
Awesome update! Although, I can't get the notification group to work. I can't select anything in the "entities" dropdown (which is also strange since the 'notify.' are services (I guess "actions" now)). 🤔
We are in the transition from moving notification actions (services) to entities. Some integrations have been migrated already. This is thus a prep for more to come.
7:05 - I think someone jumped the gun on WorldClock integration. We get a warning now that the worldclock yaml integration is being Deprecated and all setting have been migrated to the Worldclock Integration UI. However, you cannot change the time zone of at WorldClock service once it has been created (or even view what its set to) - there is no Edit UI to do this. So you either have to delete/re-create the Entry or do stupid/dangerous things like edit the core-config file manually (Yipes!)
So now we have : action: - action ???? Sorry. IMO, that's just dumb. Maybe "- process" or "- task". But this is almost as bad as having "Entity" and "Entities" cards. What's next? "name: - name", "id: - id". ?? Sorry, but this just seems to run in the wrong direction. Everything else looks great!
More changes are coming in the upcoming releases. Some technical challenges still to solve. The goal is to have: triggers: - trigger: state ... conditions: - condition: state ... actions: - action: light.turn_on ...
I updated and Alexa Media Player stopped working. Do you have any tips on this? I went back to the backup and stayed on the previous version... I use Alexa a lot.
As painful as it may be to change, I think choosing one is a more sensible approach then trying to have both in random (this potentially making one or the other redundant anyway)
@@EverythingSmartHome Thanks for getting back to me.. I ordered the new everything presence sensor with the new case a couple months back but I haven’t received anything yet .. was just wondering if you guys have had a new batch come in yet ?

Okay so now that yaml integrations and helpers are shown in the UI can we please stop removing their yaml setup? Pulling everything exclusively into the UI is such a decremental change to those of us who use more powerful code features...
Small note: Not all yaml configurations will show up in the UI. In particular, some custom integrations don’t appear, and may need to be updated with the required metadata for the UI to display them.
That is incorrect. All of them should show up now. If you really think you found a case that is incorrect, than you might want to consider raising an issue.

This isn't an issue with the update but more the way you are updating (which I don't blame to be clear as ESPHome doesn't offer a good solution for this currently) The issue your seeing is that you have added the Lite to the ESPHome addon. When you do this, it adds an encryption key, like a password. Home assistant uses this password to communicate with the Lite. The update you've applied comes directly from GitHub. To fix this, go into the ESPHome addon and hit install on the Lite config. This will put the password back. Then don't apply any updates from GitHub again and only do the updates from ESPHome. Hope that helps
Oh god i love this project. Homeassistant shows how a opensource project can be a GREAT thing.

Agreed, an integrated kiosk mode would be great. The way I do this at the moment is very messy, and it would be nice to have a simpler way.
