    Wow, I like thin mechanical watches. The Maen website is saying it will be 6.9mm thick. The ETA 7001 movement is just 2.5mm thick, which is pretty good. For comparison, I have a Cartier Santos-Dumont that is like 7.6mm thick and uses a Piaget ultra-thin hand wind movement. The Cartier was also ~$8,800. This is a very compelling offering from Maen!

    Personally I think the 37 is more classically proportioned, thin enough, maintains the running seconds and benefits from the convenience of automatic winding. I gifted mine to my brother but I’ll be picking up a replacement soon enough.

    Very cool! Love what Maen are doing, I really need to get one soon. With this one I’d definitely prefer having a seconds hand, especially since it’s a manual wind watch - it would help a lot to be able to tell whether the watch is still running. I think for this model I’d still go with the 37, but I’m happy that they made this watch as another option

    Coming out of the age of oversized watches, i quite liked the 37mm. There's a lot of 40mm intergrated sport watches out there, so it was a good point of difference and suits the vintage design imo. I havent handled the watches though.

    You've become the micro brand whisperer. I agree, as I usually do, with your critique of the watches. Even with a bigger octagonal shaped crown it's not a great choice for a manual wind and lack of a seconds hand, meh. I think they are going for a Genta/Cartier mashup. I also wonder why they use NYC borough/river references in the collection names, the company is based in Stockholm. 🤔

    I loved the Manhattan 37 when it came it out, but was one of the many who thought it was too small. To that point, it wound up on your wife’s wrist. Glad to see Maen has upsized a bit. Not too sure about the missing second hand. I guess on a dressier watch it’s not a big deal. Anyway, Maen sure knows how to make a sharp-looking watch.

But what I do not get is the lack of micro adjustment with these types of watches… I too find the aesthetics of the butterfly clasp beautiful, especially on integrated bracelets but there must be a way to make that happen… I don’t wanna have to buy a Rolex to get a nice bracelet AND clasp…

    So, I'm going to be contrary and say that this watch (also for you) really didn't need to be bigger. The propositions are fine, but now we have a 37mm that looked already great on your wrist, and one at 39mm that looks just fine, but is undeniably a big watch to wear. The reduced thickness helps a little, and probably most in mitigating the wearing of a bigger watch, but ideally they'd have reduced the thickness of the 37mm instead and I, for one, would have loved to see the adoption of the Seconde Seconde cherry colour in the main collection of the 37mm. That would have been smashing. As well as that seconds hand counterweight. Small masterstrokes of the LE if you ask me. All that before a bigger watch. The manual wind doesn't have my preference. I don't really need a display case back. And I love the stuttered sweep of a mechanical seconds hand. All in all I think I prefer the proportions on the 37mm, especially the narrower bracelet endlinks. I'd talk to the wife and negotiate shared custody! ;-)

    • @PeterKotsa
      @PeterKotsa  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I think the 37 stands alone in its own right. Also being an auto and having the sweeping seconds..that is my preference for sure.
      That said, I prefer the wearability of this 39. It's more balanced in my eyes on my size wrist and sits really low, so easily slides under the cuff.
      Hate the fact thats it manual wind though...we cant have everything :((

    • @benjaminvis
      @benjaminvis 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@PeterKotsa yes, I agree. As said, I have a bit of a wish list for this watch and seeing it this thin, I'd sure love for the 37mm to do a bit of slimming. I've always liked the Manhattan, but it wasn't till the colour on the Seconde Seconde version and the rectangular counterweight of the seconds hand that the model truly came to life for me. I didn't need the other flourishes of the LE though, I'd much rather have a further refined Manhattan with those elements. Slimming the 37 further may only be possible with a more premium movement though.

    I had a 36mm Stowa marine classic with small seconds and i believe it used an ETA 7001. And, it was really thin, too. I believe it was 8.5mm. As such, are u sure Maen didn't just remove the small seconds from this design? As someone also commented, this might look damn good woth a small seconds as well as give back the dynamic look of a visible running seconds hand. Perhaps it was removed to keep the hand stack lower and thus the overall thickness under 8mm.

    • @Portland_Living_Life
      @Portland_Living_Life 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, the ETA 7001 is a small seconds movement, so Maen made the conscious decision to not include it. I imagine it was either for aesthetics to match the previous version or for thinness.

  • @martinharrison4245
    @martinharrison4245 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Its a nice watch , but manual wind kills it for me. Not a big fan of butterfly clasps either. Its basically a homage, but the thiness is the plus to this watch. You could just buy a tissot prx quartz and have a similar vibe though ,and they only cost around £300 for the quartz or £600 for the auto . Its a cool watch but its lazy in a way , that their not offering a sleek adjustable clasp , to warrant the £800 price tag. I really love the zenith a384, but the hand wind , just kills it for me . Same with the speedie sapphire sandwich . I dont want to think about winding a 7k watch every day , or even an £800 one for that matter , even though i love the vintage vibes . Great vid as always peter , have a fab xmas and all that jazz !!

      @@PeterKotsa The thinness reminds me of the Zelos Nova (it's thicker, but only because of the box edge crystal), which also has a 7001. That's one of my go-to watches (I have three) and favorites to wear. There's something special about wearing a well done, super thin watch.

    Yeah, good point on the crown, the height superb. Bracelet ok, but no seconds hand or at least small seconds? It looks dead to me. I buy a mechanical watch to see it functioning. Love the look, shape, size, dial. No second hand is something that I don’t understand or appreciate yet. Being new to the watch scene that’s the thing that grabs me. The sweeping second hand mesmerises me. I would have thought that for their target market the addition thickness and sweeping second hand would have been of more benefit. Just looking at your comments on this thread it’s the biggest gripe. Possible solution would be 40mm with sweeping second hand, let the consumer decide. Big expense but could also be big reward. Risky. What would I know, just a noob 😂

    • @Horizontalvertigo
      @Horizontalvertigo 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      If you get in to dress watches you'll probably quickly come to the same realisation that the seconds hand is an added complication, and sometimes watches are better without. Though saying that, this one is a bit weird, you'd think this larger, more sporty model would have the sweeping seconds, and the smaller, dressier one wouldn't.
      Don't knock the deadbeat seconds complication though, you're just too used to quartz models now, but the tick per second was originally a high end complication that afforded a watch better precision in time telling.

      @@PeterKotsa that seems doubtful, but I sure would like them to try. It seems to me like exhibition case backs always add thickness - at least that's consistently what I've seen with Omegas - like the Seamaster NTTD is thinner because it lacks the exhibition back. Maybe they can manage it with a non-dive watch where the crystal can be thinner.

At least with the display case back you will be able to quick-check it's running :) From the pic (finishing) it looks like the 7001 is 'Top Grade'. Do you know? I have this spec in a Stowa which retains small seconds and it's excellent although no hacking. I suppose they've gone for this style crown aesthetically, but if they were to say double the facet count they could keep that with a better winding experience.

    How thin? That's impressive. It can only be achieved by a quartz or manual wind movement. While the crown would be ok for a quartz I totally agree about the crown being not the best choice for an every use for winding the movement. But it's a very charming watch. It's a niche watch, perhaps not an everyday piece and as such it provides a decelerated experience.

      @@PeterKotsa I guess they could but they’d have to increase the thickness slightly. If the objective was to make it as thin as possible, I’m not sure if it could be done without sacrificing something else.

    What's the point of installing a Swiss movement known to be more precise than an Asian movement if you don't have a second hand? If not to raise the price and sell this model more easily? I don't understand the why and how.😉👋🇨🇵

    yeah, it's cool that it's so thin, but no seconds hand and no hacking? So you're just resigned to the fact that the time your timepiece is showing will never be accurate. Curious decision.
