If you're already a DxO PhotoLab user, Film Pack 7 activates additional tools in PL. Luminosity masking, and additional contrast sliders for fine contrast, and highlight, midtone, and shadow contrast.
Very nice comparison presentation - thank you. I don't do much street or portrait photography, so I'll stick to DxO Photolab and Film Pack7 for now. I do like the idea of Dehancer as you've explained it and will probably try a free trial version in the near future. Were you using the Pro version in the video?
Thanks. Yes it’s the full version of the Lightroom plugin that I used. I don’t know why it is exactly but film emulation makes a lot more sense with people in the frame. Having said that I do like the effect on the Shanghai at night photo. Really gives the reflections a lift and the darkness a softness.
There is no dependency, but if you’re interested in black and white there’s a compelling reason to add Nik to the armoury. Color Efex for landscapes and Sharpener is a more powerful and flexible tool than PL sharpening. I think it’s a good investment for photographers at any level but ultimately optional.
I have pondered buying FilmPack but wonder how much more, other than combining everything in the one place, is gained in comparison to using Analogue FX and colourfx and silverefx. I'm not particularly interested in colour sims and in general the finished edit in PL for a shot in colour is perfectly fine for me.
Thanks Chris, thoughtful, reflective and thorough as usual. I always enjoy your content. For me, the integration of FP with Photolab does provide an enhanced experience compared to FP on its own, and I have achieved some interesting outcomes including with processing copies of my own original 35mm slides from the 1980s and ‘90s. I’ve taken the liberty of emailing you a before/after example. I am always stimulated by exploring the opportunities offered by taking an image as a starting point for creative experimentation in ways that enhance photographically and not simply for effect. Kirk
Thank you. Can’t wait to see the slides, I was literally thinking about that - why I have no slides - just now. Totally agree on not using effects for effects sake. Like composition, if it’s not adding to the image it’s most likely a distraction!

Very interesting. I had never heard of 'Dehancer' before viewing here, so thank you for that!
Thank you!
Thank you, I like what are you doing
Thanks for the feedback, that’s great to hear!

Hi Chris, is there a necessity to get / use Nik collection along with Photolab 7/8?
