tomlin will coast into the hall of fame or some shit for never having a losing record even if a significant number of years they barely passed .500 and got knocked out of the playoffs instantly
he was never a truly great coach, he was horrible at managing egos which blew up great steeler teams through the years, and he lucked out early on to have some of the most talented players in steelers history that didn’t need a ton of coaching anyway.
also, frankly, he’s black and the media has a hard on for inflating the careers of black people in these fields.

Thank God he's finally being rightfully critized. This guy has been coasting off massive talent his GM has given him for his entire coaching career. He won one ring with Bill Cowher's team and also owes it in part to Bernard Pollard injuring Tom Brady. Imagine having nearly a decade of Ben, Brown, and Bell all in their primes plus a top 10 defense and o line nearly very year during that same time and making one super bowl.

I used to be an ardent Tomlin supporter. But that Cleveland playoff game broke me. I finally began to see all the criticisms of him were true. Under achieving during the regular season (except for 2020), and not being prepared come playoff time. It happens every year and all he has to offer is empty platitudes and rhetoric, which the media loves. He once said, “I have the best job in sports.” Well of course he does. Imagine having a job with zero accountability, and a host of media willing to defend you when you fail. I’d call that a dream job too. You said it best, he loses when it matters most and never gets called out for it. Just compare him to Mike McCartthy a guy who’s guided his team to three straight 12-5 seasons and lost in the first round of playoffs every year. He’s on the hot seat, at least according to the media. Why is he treated differently? Is the never losing season thing? Because they both won a Super Bowl.

@@skap_attack The Steelers have ALWAYS been one of the NFL's "darling franchises" that can do no wrong and get break after break from the league. The refs always favor them, they get multiple primetime home games year after year, and their players can do whatever and get a slap on the wrist (Big Ben). So Tomlin is trash if he can't win with those advantages. But they won't fire him. It would look bad for the franchise that forced The Rooney Rule upon the NFL to fire a black coach. Good. The rest of the report card also shows how cheap ownership can be as it comes in the bottom half for things like training, family support, and travel.

Non-Steelers fan here: I have nothing but respect for the organization, but they’re a far cry from what they were built upon and yes, it does start with Tomlin. He has done nothing to keep the team relevant, the team hasn’t developed their young players like teams past. It’s just a sideshow now. There is no way a player like Pickens could have behaved the way he has under Cowher or Knoll. No way! Change definitely seems necessary.

Hit the nail on the head. I constantly hear “He’s a SB winning coach!” He legitimately stepped into the best position any head coach has in NFL history. He inherited a team that won a Super Bowl 2 years prior, with a future HOF QB not even in his prime yet, and the #1 Defense in the league. He won a SB with a team that he did not build or mold. It was a team that already had veterans who had what it took to win the big game.
Then you constantly hear “Never had a losing season!” No, just a whole lot of underperforming/mediocre ones, and only won 3 play off games in 13 years.. with one of them being a game where Cinci snatched defeat from the jaws of victory and outright handed Pittsburgh the W.
Not saying he’s a “bad” NFL coach but he is EXTREMELY overrated

He proves that on a weekly basis. Lose to teams bellow you. Get blown out by the actual good teams. As long as his ego stays this team will never see postseason success. Ain't gonna happen. Steelers will het blown out this year and maybe ppl will start to look at the numbers and realize just how bad of a coach he actually is. Again not to say he isn't a good man. Not gonna pretend that Tomlin's coaching record been great in the playoffs last several seasons, but I'm shocked hes even coached some of those Steelers teams to the postseason.
He had like 4-5 BACK UP Quarterbacks starting after they moved on from Roethlisberger & the front office has done a MEDIOCRE job at best in supplying him with good to elite talent. They literally held on to their best players too long or trade/let them walk for a pack of Skittles.
I dont even know how he's managed to NOT have a losing season over the years. We've seen way more talented teams perform worse week end & week out. Therefore to call him a FRAUD is a out of pocket. No one had any real expectations for these Steelers & if you say so, youre lying 😂.

Also Bill Cowher, like Tomlin, won 1 super bowl and made it to 2 with the Steelers but he was part of the WINNING STANDARD??

  • @iksdjvan100
    @iksdjvan100 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

#1 Tomlin going only 8-10 in the playoffs versus cower going 12-9 is highly misleading. If you take the 2005 season that the steelers won the superbowl in context you can see just how easily cower ends up with the same record except worse than tomlin if the refs, err, steelers didn't go on the most improbable (dirty) superbowl run in nfl history at that time as the 6th seed who had to destroy the career of an 05 mvp candidate, Carson Palmer, by destroying his leg on the second play of the game with an obviously dirty hit, getting the colts on the only bad day they had that year and still needing the most accurate kicker of all time to miss a field goal to win, beating a vastly overated broncos team in the afc championship and winning a totally fair and not rigged superbowl which still to this day is argued over as the second most rigged superbowl of all time second only to superbowl 3. If the steelers didn't destroy one of the best QB's in the leagues knee in that first playoff game, cower ends his career with a, well what do you know, a 8-10 playoff record. Except Cower, unlike Tomlin, wouldn't have a superbowl ring. If there ever has been a rigged playoffs to get a team to win (for bettis, for cower) the 05 playoff run of the steelers is still considered the closest example of it.
#2 To say that tomlin winning one less division title than cower helps to prove that cower was a vastly superior coach is laughable. Yes, cower has one more div. title but lets look at the competition each coach faced. During cowers tenure, his division opponents went a total of 398-481-1 combined with a win percentage of .453. Yet, tomlins tenure saw a combined opponents record of 395-423-7 with a win percentage of .483. It doesn't sound like much but those 3 points are huge, especially when you consider that in the 2017 and 18' seasons the Browns had a combined 1-31 record. Cut those two seasons for the browns out and you have a over .500 win percentage. However, that is not the best point to come from my analysis. For cower, from 92'-06' his division opponents had a winning record only twice and neither of those years(99' and 06') did cower win the division. Yet, During Tomlins tenure, the steelers division had a winning record SEVEN times and the steelers won the division TWICE in those seven years! So, not a single time did cower win the division when it had a winning record but Tomlin did it TWICE, and both of those years (14' and 20') the AFC North was the best division in football with a win record, both years of 38-25-1 (.603). So while yes, tomlin is down one to cower, i would argue that Tomlin did it against tougher opponents, finishing with a higher win percentage than cower and winning the best division in football twice compared to cower not doing it at all.
#3 cower doesn't have basically the same win%, he has a worse win percentage by 1 point plus tomlins won 24 more games that cower. why did cower retire anyway? Oh yeah, thats right, that steelers team that was soo "plush" with talent went 8-8 in their last season under bill cower coming fresh off that superbowl win. The same squad that won the superbowl (minus bettis) barely scraped buy a .500 season with the legendary bill cower until tomlin came along and went 10-6 and 12-4 in those first two seasons with that same squad??? this is also forgetting that over a 3 year span teams can change dramatically. Drafts and trades and retirements. So this idea that Tomlin won because of what cower built is a bad argument at best and reaching for straws.
#4 The idea that Cower just didn't have talent at the QB position is simply wrong. Both O'Donnell and Stewart were ProBowl Quarterbacks While Maddox was the 02 comeback player of the year leading the steelers to a 10-5-1 record of which he was 10-3-1 and they almost went to the afc championship that year save for a overtime field goal loss the the Tennessee Titans. People also forget, Big Ben might have been a good quarterback but he had a ton of struggles Himself with the motorcycle wreck, his trouble with women and legal woes. Along with that, if you do the same math with Ben as i did with cower you will find that abscent that dubious 05 superbowl run Big Ben would have ended his career with a playoff record of 9-11 and only one superbowl as nobody questions the steelers run to the superbowl in 07 (just the win). Ben had problems performing too. Yes, ben was better than the other list of QB's but to throw everything on tomlin is shady at best. Don't forget, in 2010 Ben was suspended for the first 6 games where the steelers went 5-1 without him and 7-3 after his return.
These are just a few of the issues with this video. I could go on but ive spent way too much time on this already. To sum things up:
Tomlin won more against tougher division opponents and has no shadow of "rigged" allegations over his superbowl win and he has yet to walk away. Remember, cower was facing these same arguments the offseason before he finally won the superbowl. Everyone seems to forget.

  • @feynmanschwingere_mc2270
    @feynmanschwingere_mc2270 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

Part 2: On Mike Tomlin - If Tomlin sucks, then your coach sucks too. Want proof?
Cowher was just as big a disappointment. Cowher got to just as many super bowls as Tomlin did, won just as many SBs as Tomlin did, he took CHOKED several big playoff games (losing to Drew Bledsoe in 2001 is borderline unforgivable given how bad Bledsoe was under pressure throughout his career). Cowher, unlike Tomlin, had losing seasons. Tomlin has 7 division titles to Cowher's 8 division titles, but I'd argue that Tomlin's division has been HARDER to win than Cowher's was during his time in Pittsburgh. Cowher is 12-9 compared to Tomlin's 8-10 but that is literally the difference between one good playoff one in which you make a conference title game and a couple one-and-done years.
The TOTAL empirical difference between Cowher and Tomlin is MARGINAL at best. They both won one close SB. They both lost one close SB.
And here's where i REALLY feel like your argument doesn't work:
NFL COACHES in GENERAL ARE OVERRATED. QBs are more important than the coach. If Tomlin had Brady, he'd have 8 Super Bowls and look like a genius.
Before Brady, Belichick had FOUR LOSING SEASONS in 5 years for a Browns team that, contrary to popular opinion, was ACTUALLY GOOD before Bill got there. They had made the playoffs 4 out of the previous 6 seasons before Bill got there. They have a TOP 6 WIN % of any franchise of the LOADED 80s. They were NOT perennial losers before Bill got there; Belichick is the one THAT STARTED THE CHRONIC LOSING IN CLEVELAND.
Before Brady IN New England, Belichick took a team that made the Super Bowl with Parcells (the real genius, not Belichick), and was .500 or BETTER under Pete Carroll, that HAD NOT HAD A LOSING SEASON in FOUR YEARS, to 5-11 and then 0-2 with the highest paid QB in the NFL, Drew Bledsoe.
With Brady IN New England, after they became a dynasty, the ONLY season they didn't win the division? Brady was hurt in 2008/09. THe ONLY season they didn't make it to the playoffs after their 2nd SB win in 3 years? Brady was hurt in 2008/09.
After Brady IN New England, Belichick put up 3 LOSING SEASONS in 4 years, with the WORST OFFENSE the NFL has seen in over a DECADE. That's how putrid NE's current offense ranks. With Brady? The highest PPG AVERAGE in NFL HISTORY of any QB at 28 PPG.
Belichick is 84 - 103 WITHOUT Brady. He has ZERO DIVISION TITLES in 11 seasons without Brady. ZERO. Point. ZERO. He has ONE PLAYOFF WIN IN 11 SEASONS WITHOUT BRADY. 1. Far, far, worse than Tomlin.
Harbaugh was going 7-9 without Lamar. Get's Lamar and is now contending for Super Bowls. Yes he won a Super Bowl, but he won that SB on the back of RAY LEWIS and Ed Reed and Terrell Suggs, 3 HOF caliber defensive STUDS, and Flacco going Super Saiyan during that run (which i REFUSE to ascribe to Harbaugh given his inability to coax anything near that kind of performance from Flacco thereafter).
By your criteria, I'd argue Harbaugh is overrated. (Unless you think Lamar is overrated and Harbaugh is actually carrying him, which i bed to differ).
Bruce Arians. He had ONE good run with Carson Palmer, got blown out by Cam Newton. Was below .500 every season in Tampa as QB "guru" until he got THE GOAT to win him his lone ring after Brady put up 4 straight 30+ point playoff games (all on a torn MCL). No Brady = NO RING FOR ARIANS. Give Tomlin Brady and he looks like a genius too.
Lets see. Andy Reid is exempt. He's a LEGIT genius level head coach. Won with everybody. So good, people thought Kevin Kolb was a franchise QB lol. So good, he made Alex Smith look like a borderline Pro Bowl QB. Has OWNED the AFC West since he arrived AFTER OWNING the NFC East with McNabb. Reid is a legit top 10 coach all time.
Sean Payton had several below .500 seasons in Brees's PRIME because he couldn't fix their defense. Good coach, but he made one Super Bowl, won 1, and hasn't been back since. Tomlin at LEAST made it back twice.
Dan Whittaker in Detroit is doing some great things but its still too early.
    Ditto for Indy.
    Ditto for Ryans in Houston.
LaFleur has to MAKE it to a SB first. He's looking really good so far with how he's coached up Love.
McCarthy? LOL. He is an even bigger representative of your thesis than Tomlin is! He has LOTS of talent and chokes every year with ROGERS (who is better than Big Ben) and now Dak.
Sirianni? This years collapse is telling.
    Washington? Lol.
    Giants? Lol.
    Minnesota? Too early to tell.
    Chicago? We shall see.
Vegas? Inept ownership (could really apply for most of the teams in the league TBF).
Chargers? Staley is garbage but Herbert is also a choker.
Bengals coach? Missed playoffs with Burrow. Can't seem to fix the offensive line. Without Burrow, he hasn't won anything. And we shall see if he can really coach now that he has to lose one of boyd or Higgins.
Stefanski? He's a good coach. Beat Tomlin head to head with Baker only to LOSE to a ROOKIE CJ Stroud - which only reinforces my point: QBS are wayyyyyy more important in terms of winning/losing games than the head coaches. Wake up guys. Stefanski just got OUTCOACHED by a rookie HC in Demeco Ryans and a rookie QB.
Pederson? He has a SB ring but missed the playoffs with Trevor Lawrence after a bad collapse to the season. Got fired from Philly after hitching his wagon to a BAD carson wentz. It's ALMOST AS IF GOOD COACH cannot CONSISTENTLY out perfom BAD QB play. Hmmm, notice a theme here? Nick Foles, plays out of his MIND in the 2017 playoffs. They hand the keys to Wentz, he craps the bed, can't read a defense, panicks under pressure. The result? Pederson gets fired. Perhaps if Pederson had CJ Stroud instead of Wentz, he'd still be in Philly right now racking up wins.
Pete Carroll. How many playoff wins does he have since 2014? See...I'm making sense now.
Cardinals coach? Too early to tell.
Sean McVeigh? ELITE. Took Goff to the Sb. And then WON the Sb with a better QB in Stafford. Still remains to see what he can do once the Rams core gets too old and Donald and Kupp fall off. But he's EASILY a top 5 coach in the NFL NO QUESTION. Losing season last year was a blemish (5-13) but perhaps COACHING IN GENERAL IS OVERRATED. Why? LAST season, the Rams were BAD. They were the first defending Super Bowl champion to finish with a losing record since the 2003 Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and the first defending Super Bowl champion to miss the playoffs since the 2016 Denver Broncos. To add to all those struggles, the Rams went 1-7 on the road for the first time since 2011, when the team was still based in St. Louis. That's bad bro. But he gets a pass for that season because of the incredible work he did all the seasons before as well as getting the team to recover the 2nd half of this season and perform better.
Kyle Shannahan? ELITE. He has one SB under his belt and several conference title games. Matt Ryan looked like Dan Marino under Kyle and they were one 2nd half collapse from winning the 2015 SB in large part to his work as offensive coordinator (until his IDIOTIC playcalling cost them in the 2nd half). He took Jimmy G, an average QB to the SB. Something similar to McVeigh with Goff at the time (Goff has since improved). Shanahan, however, before he got Purdy had a LOSING RECORD IN San Francisco without Jimmy G. He's missed the playoffs in San Fran with his starting QB injured. Tomlin has gotten his team to the playoffs MULTIPLE times with his starting QB injured. Shanahan is a top 5 coach but can he PLEASE win a Super Bowl first before he starting crowning him as the next offensive Einstein? McVeigh has earned it, Shanahan has to seal the deal.
So how many coaches can we reasonably say are better than Tomlin right now?
    Andy Reid
    McVeigh
    Shanahan
    MAYBE Pete Carroll
Tomlin is BETTER THAN HARBAUGH: 18-15 vs Harbaugh, including wins with BACKUP QBs.
Give Tomlin Brady, or Stafford, or a LEGIT QB and he can work wonders. Big Ben was washed his last 4 seasons and Tomlin paid the price for sticking with a QB who was already past his prime and fat and out of shape. Guess what? Tomlin has a FAR better win % without Big Ben than Belichick has without Brady AND McVeigh has with his backup AND Kyle Shannahan has with his backup. Only Reid has a better win % than Tomlin (over at least a 10 game sample size) without his starting QB.
Like I said, it's not a BAD video, just a whole INCOMPLETE video. You are holding Lamar and Tomlin to a HIGHER standard than the media is holding several other coaches and players past and present. Such as Peyton Manning, who ESPN had the audacity to name the most DOMINANT football player of the century in 2016 lol, go look it up; or Sean Payton, who was never on the hot seat despite three consecutive 7-9 subpar seasons with PRIME Brees (although I do give credit to Payton for maximizing Brees's talent and enhancing Brees after a serious shoulder injury).
LOVE your channel, LOVE your work, will still be your biggest fan on here, but i stand by criticisms. The two videos aren't terrible, but they are NOT contextualized anywhere near well enough for my liking. My guess is he probably has to win a playoff game next season or he's out depending on how the season goes.
    You're still the TH-cam GOAT!

McVeigh does some boneheaded things too. You think he could've used those timeouts he wasted, one in the first few minutes of the third q? BB took Mac to the playoffs after losing the best QB ever who's been in the fabric of the team for a decade+. McVeigh still had his QB the next few seasons and all I heard is excuses for him. Which other coach would get those kind of excuses when they still have their SB QB? I'm not saying BB doesn't have soemthing to prove without Brady or McVeigh isn't a good coach. But to say BB can't win after Brady left to say McVeigh is undoubtably a great coach is crazy.

I think all these old school 15year plus NFL Coaches(Any Reid, John Harbaugh, Tomlin, and Belichick) are only good as their quaterbacks which explains their production or lack there of. On coaching skill alone along with a solid defense, Tomlin will get you 8-10 wins but without a dynamic QB don’t expect much more.

Honestly, he was a diversity hire. He inherited Cowher's team much like Barry Switzer did Jimmy J's Dallas Cowboys. But the proof is in the pudding. Barry bombed his next 2 yrs and he was a wrap. Dallas has never been the same since.
In Pittsburgh's case, the Rooney's stuck with a certain Roethlisberger WAY too long after the scandal and I think that left a stain on that team imo. SoTomlin is in between 2 really messy story lines. But it is time to move on from him. I know Pittsburgh fans feel different, but take emotions away? ALL of this start after Roethlisberger.

I'm a Dallas fan, but respect the Steelers franchise; the league is better when Pitt is strong, and they have been barely above average the last few seasons. I could see them replacing Tomlin, BUT you have to make sure you have a better coach in place b/c it could be worse; what if they started going like 5-12 w/ a new coach who turned out to be even worse? But if they had a chance to line up Pete Carroll, Belicheck or Jim Harbaugh, I would say do it. Tomlin is hard to pinpoint b/c at times he has seemed like a good coach, and then others not so much. But I know the standard in Pitt is higher than the average franchise, which is why I think it's worth the risk to try someone new.
