    coatlesscarl dude, this 8 bit song is AMAZING because 1, you made the recreation so exact and great, and 2, Super Smash Bros. Melee is an AMAZING game. This song recreation is just a beauty and a pinnacle of video games. You just made my life of gaming better. I cannot stop listening to this because you made a well done work of art, music, and video game combined into an outstanding piece that should have millions of views. Also, GOOOOOOOO SHEIK!

    • @LucasZero64
      @LucasZero64 10 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Most people who play competitively agree with you. Probably for different reasons though. I personally find Brawl a lot slower and less intense overall. After playing melee, brawl feels like moon physics. Also the competitive skill aspect is a downer, Brawl is just so much simpler, which I suppose could be an upside for some people. Honest;y I'd play either but Melee is better as a fighting game in my opinion. Plus no tripping ;)

      Solace Snipe While I do like Melee better overall I have to admit that the most concentrated fun I ever had in one moment was when me, my bro, and my bro-in-law were all playing wario sudden death final smashes everywhere and we did nothing but wheelie into each other or accidentally SD ourselves trying to drive as super-wario. We were on the floor we were laughing so hard.

      You know what´s funny? From a musical stand-point I actually prefer SSBM over any other game in the series. Brawl has given us lots of good remixes from other games and in many respects I should like it more because it has a lot more music to pick from.
      But Melee has brought us numerous pieces of music with a fresh take on them, both remixes and original compositions like this opening theme, the main theme, all-star and the secondary theme that plays after you complete everything, that actually triumphs over SSBB´s soundtrack in terms of structure, tone and complexety. Something I want to learn from as a composer.

  • @takayasaure9068

    If I recall correctly, Konami also used a technique that allowed them to use a single sound channel to create an echoing effect, rather than using two channels to do the work. This allowed for even thicker and richer works.
    Good job on this, SMBM is one of the first games I got with my gamecube, right alongside Metroid Prime and Wind Waker (I was about 7 at the time, so I was still new to console gaming. I was no stranger to Half-Life and Starcraft on PC, though.)

    Nothing like the sound of SSBM's intro. Brilliant work, though when I saw the intro of this game on a VCR that came with a magazine, the pause at the beginning was cut, which I think makes the intro sound better.

    Am I the only one who prefers Brawl and Smash 4 to Melee? To me, the controls in Melee feel a lot stiffer and awkward than the controls in Brawl in Smash 4, which are very fluent and responsive. *Waits for hate comments

    • @coatlesscarl
      @coatlesscarl  8 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      +Moop Bread Depends on what you're used to I guess. Smash 4 feels a little too loose and wobbly for me because I play Melee so much more. The relative rigidity of the Melee controls help me feel the impact of the moves a bit more too. For me, landing a Melee Falcon Knee is so much more satisfying than a Smash 4 Knee because the overall controls are more "firm" than Smash 4's fluid controls.

    • @TwilightPB
      @TwilightPB 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Moop Bread It's not just a matter of preference, but also experience. Melee is very tight and responsive for me, after having spent a few months playing and practicing my movement. I can always get exactly where I want to go on the stage very quickly. Yet, despite months of the same play in smash 4, I still struggle to control my floaty character.

    • @JadeSune
      @JadeSune 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Melee has no input buffer on a ton of things, so if you hit too early it doesn't respond. On the other hand, it doesn't have Brawl's insane 10 frame and Smash 4's 4 frame input lag. BLEH. Which is why I like Project M the best! It has all the things that make Melee beautiful, and allows buffering for more things, and reduces the in built lag from Brawl. :D

    What are the F02/F03 codes in the DPCM channels for? I've noticed them in quite a few of your videos, and I'm wondering what they're there for (I'm trying to learn FamiTracker :D )

    • @coatlesscarl
      @coatlesscarl  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      They change the speed at which the tracker scrolls. F03 is 300 beats per minute and F02 is 450 bpm (assuming the tempo remains at the default 150). Shifting back and forth between those two speeds creates an overall bpm that is somewhere in between 300-450. For example, a track that vacillates between one row of F02 and one row of F03 will have an overall bpm of 375. I use this method instead of simply altering the tempo value because it causes the tracker to scroll more smoothly. Just changing the tempo value can lead to some sections scrolling faster or slower than others, making the tempo noticeably uneven in places.

    • @rockemsockemroberts
      @rockemsockemroberts 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah, neat trick. Does it affect the pt the relative spacing of notes? for example, do you have to change the distance b/w notes to achieve eighth notes?

    • @coatlesscarl
      @coatlesscarl  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      rockemsockemroberts Sometimes. It depends how fast the speed is. The slower the speed of the tracker is, the less rows you have to work with, and this could potentially mean that a note you want to track gets stuck between available rows, making it impossible to place. Then you'll have to increase both the speed of the tracker and the distance between notes. This will result in a track that has the same tempo as before, but more rows to work with. For example, two notes that are four rows apart at F06 is the same as two notes that are eight rows apart at F03, the only difference being that in the latter case, there are more rows to place notes, effects, etc. in.
      If this is confusing I can make an FTM that will illustrate what I mean.

    This isn't technically correct. The NES has 2 square channels, 1 triangle, 1 noise, and 1 PCM. With the addition of a Famicom Disk System, it adds one user defined wavelength channel, which could be used for sawtooth
    You have the pulse, triangle, noise, and PCM channels, fine. You have a sawtooth channel, also fine if we're allowing FDS. But you also added TWO extra pulse channels. EVEN IF the FDS sound had 3 channels, it only allows for 1 user defined wavelength to be loaded at a time.
    This is a good remix, don't get me wrong. That detail about the sound bugs me more than it should though... The only other remix of this song in 8-bit goes for a "Shovel Knight" style rather than just remaking the song exactly, like here. But here, the music isn't hardware accurate.
    This is a nitpick in the grand scheme of things, but it really bothers me...

    • @coatlesscarl
      @coatlesscarl  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi TheRedCap. This remix was never presented as an NES remix, hence why I simply call it 8-bit instead of an NES remix in the title.
      In this cover I'm using a Famicom expansion chip called the VRC6 which enables me to use the three additional channels along with the standard NES channels you've listed. This expansion chip was used in the Famicom version of Castlevania III, which is why the soundtrack for that version sounds so different from the NES version's soundtrack.
      Considering also that the program I used to create this remix so closely emulates the sound capabilities of the Famicom and its expansion chips that it can export songs to a sound format that can be played back on original hardware, I'd say that the authenticity or "hardware accuracy" of this remix is actually quite intact. I'd encourage you to search out the various expansion chips that were created for the Famicom back in the day; some of them increase the Famicom's sound capabilities even more than the VRC6! Who knows, you may enjoy hearing how far people pushed the limits of the Famicom.

    • @TheRedCap
      @TheRedCap 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@coatlesscarl Yeah I thought about expansion chips, but I hadn't really considered them since the american NES couldn't use them.
