      @Skrenja 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@cityraintunes I agree with the OP. I love Logic but it just kinda sucks for manipulating audio and pitch in real time. Apple's pitch algorithms are always really weird and "artifacty" no matter which mode is used. Also, the functionality that Ableton's warp has just isn't there. Try doing anything like what Chris Lake does with his percussion, or try to replicate that cool part of "Funk Soul Brother" where it slows down, then speeds up in Logic -- it's next to impossible.

    • @rexeffect7122
      @rexeffect7122 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Also with ableton live, it’s not necessary to update to Big Sur, if you’re running an older Mac that doesn’t qualify for big sir update.h

    • @EvanNagao
      @EvanNagao 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@cityraintunes Ableton's warp algorithm is so good at quantizing, especially if you're doing it by hand. The automatic quantize algorithm is also miles ahead of logic. I almost never use automatic quantizing on Logic (talking about audio files, not midi). Also, if you need to slow down or speed up a file, logic's algorithm doesn't do a good job of making it sound good. Often times you'll get choppyness, or weird sounds that shouldn't be there.

      @thestarseeker8196 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Skrenja I’ve been messing with Flex for a few iterations of the software now and I can definitely say it’s improved a lot. My own complaint about the artifacts and stuff is that they seem to pop up at random. It used to happen a lot, now not nearly as much, but there’s still no rhyme and reason, so if I needed to squash a bad mixing habit in order to solve the problem, I can’t because it just seems to happen at random. But again though, it’s improved. I flexed an entire vocal line the other day, something from a sample pack, just to mess around, I took it from a high C all the way down to an F two octaves down and it sounded like gold. One thing I definitely have noticed though is if there’s any artifact or impurity in the track you’ve got on Flex, it’s absolutely going to stick out like a sore thumb if you bend it. Better off just redoing the part in that case.

  • @DavidIntrator
    @DavidIntrator 2 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    To make an accurate comparison, you need to lower the volume on the spatial mix to match that of the stereo mix. I believe many in the comments found the spatial mix better because it was simply louder and therefore appeared to have more presence. To my ear, however, after making the volume adjustments, the stereo mix was better. The spatial was just muddy. The low mids were mushy. It lacked clarity and punch. I'm sure one can mix in spatial successfully, but I would imagine that would take a lot of experimenting. We're just at the beginning of figuring out how to use this new technology.

    • @gregrodrigueziii8075
      @gregrodrigueziii8075 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Technology. Nope, we aren't in the beginning. Apple is marketing it as if it's a beginning. Audio post-production people have been mixing in Atmos for almost a decade. Do we not consider Film scores music? the foundation of how to mix in atmos is there, it's not like people are starting from scratch. The problem is that people are stubborn, they don't want to mix a very dynamic song. Learn from Audio post people and take it from there. there's a reason why atmos are mixed that way, though yes its film but its not just because it's "film". it's because of decades of experience mixing with atmos, that they basically know what generally works. But Apple wants to make it look like the technology is totally new. It's not.
      With how to balance with the stereo, just like most surround multi-channel material, forget stereo mix. Mix in surround/multi-channel, then downmix to stereo. For decades, people have found out already that the best workflow is downmixing to smaller channel count, never upmixing. The same way you mix in stereo then check in mono, the priority is stereo, the one with more channels should be the main. They should just follow that same philosophy for music mixing, I mean it's made that way for a reason.

      Nobody will hear it as you intend because nobody has a correct listening environment. No cans will have the correct phase relationship to reproduce what you heard when mixing. Nobody cares if the hihat is behind and above the snare, They are trying to hear a groove. Commercial music is about emotion, not precise positioning in an imagined 3D space.

    Excellent video as always! May I point out that headphones still can’t really make a sound come from up or down, and front or back? I get it, the sound is manipulated with predelay and ambience to simulate a position in space, but it’s still so much different from an actual sound playing behind you, or above you. So I imagine that for mixing in atmos correctly you’d really need several speakers positioned in space…. What do you think?

    Thanks for the video. This new features are for some type of producer who needs this tools natively. But Logic has to give a lot of steps forward to achieve the modern sound. In my experience from the 8 version until 10 (2007 - 2019) never renovates the old sample library that almost never sound updated, sound old out-dated. The native plugins are too old also, and the step sequencer is really not intuitive. that's why I prefer to switch to Ableton Live Suite, more expensive but with the modern sound my work needed, a jump to my music, to my sample library and to native plugins that really sound amazing. Hugs.

      Sorry but personally i find the sequencer enought intuitive with a lot of functions, and for the modernity Logic has got a good synths library and stocks plugins like alchemy IMO, and you can also find a lot of modern sounds in Apple Loops

    I prefer the stereo version. More powerful on mono instruments. Maybe it depends style of music, ambiant/relaxing music could be better in binaural.

  • @billB101
    @billB101 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Binaural listening to the atmos mix is OK, but it doesn't replace the real thing so not sure if I'd want to mix that way.
    Only way to test the translation is to actually AB though I guess.

    Great video! I much prefer your stereo mix. Dolby Atmos and spatial mixing serve a real purpose in a Film and TV world but from a listening perspective, I find musical instruments can sound lost and lifeless in spatial mode compared to a standard stereo mix. Of course, much depends on the placement and decisions made during the mixing process but personally I like to keep things mostly stereo with key elements narrow or mono. Adding spatial elements like reverbs, reflections, wide to narrow sweeps, dreamy guitars and vocals work well. I guess much depends on the intention and material but it feels important to keep things natural and in the real world. I can't wait to hear something like Cold Play or U2 in concert with microphones positioned accordingly to achieve a real world perspective (as if you were standing in the centre). Again, key elements would be quite stereo and central but the 360 reflections and atmosphere would be awesome!

    I have used almost all DAW’s in existence. Logic is very powerful but there are simple fixes needed. e.g it’s is very frustrating to change note sizes in the piano 2) moving buses quickly to create your unique channel strip. 3) importing MP3 correctly. Most times I convert to wav file 44k/16bit. Does anyone else have simple issues with this DAW.

Have they simplified MIDI channle toggle just as in we can so easily do in Cubase and also in stanalone Kontakt version- i am talking about the ability to switch Midi Intruments /plugins to different midi channels on different hardware midi controllers

    I like the spatial audio for this example when it’s just instrumental music, however it still doesn’t have the same kind of punch as the stereo version. I’m finding whenever I switch over to an atmos mix on iTunes for any sort of music with a vocal, the vocal just gets buried and everything sounds weird and phasey. I think it’s a cool idea but still has a really long way to go to convince me personally. Glad Logic has implement this feature though. Very helpful in this day and age with this technology developing.

      One of the few who is listening and not overhyping. Altering a stereo mix with dedicated mono lead tracks is a bad idea!

    • @tomhigham88
      @tomhigham88 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@EricPeelMusic Yeah I think theoretically it could be done with some more control. Say with like a mid/side or a pan eq where you can adjust a threshold to split certain upper frequencies off in to those surround areas, but still retain some of the middle information so things don't get lost and too out of phase. Maybe that would work? I don't know.

    • @EricPeelMusic
      @EricPeelMusic 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tomhigham88 If the listener can hear 4 or more channels, then a surround tool makes sense. But if the listener is going to be hearing 2 channels only, ever, it makes no difference of the approach to get those 2 channels to sound a certain way. Maybe it's easier somehow to mix in 4 channels positioned around you while mixing, then it gets mixed down to 2 channels and somehow you achieved a faster result. Like mixing in 2 channels, you can use EQ and timing to trick the listener into moving things behind or above you, even listening in stereo only. And maybe this Spatial Audio thing does just that. But I like to know what exactly the heck it is doing because I don't like marketing gimmicks.

    • @tomhigham88
      @tomhigham88 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@EricPeelMusic yeah agree, it probably sounds incredible when you've got 9 speakers and 2 subs around you to mix and then listen to it in, but the way it collapses to binaural just doesn't have me convinced yet.

    all this cool stuff and I would just like the sustain on instruments to function as recorded.... can you start a recording with the sustain pedal down? can you split a recorded midi region without loosing sustain? Can you start playback in the middle of a midi region and hear the sustain? I am running on some older stuff, but these issues have followed me through any updates, im I the only one who struggles with this?
