There are no opposing theories to evolution, any contrasting beliefs are guesses at best. People who say that evolution is "just a theory" clearly don't know what the word theory means. A scientific law vs. theory works like this; the law of gravity states that if I drop an object it will fall to the ground 100% of the time, the theory of gravity explains why this will happen. In scientific terms, law is what happens and theory is why it happens. Just like gravity we have the theory of evolution and the law of evolution. A theory is not a guess like some people think it is, a theory is higher on the scientific hierarchy than a law is. Evolution is a fact, it has been proven that it happens, the only piece of the puzzle missing is how life started. We can hypothesize how it started, but we can't prove it, yet. Creationists, your inability to understand evolution is not evidence against it.

You lack some understanding as well. Macroevolution has never been proven or replicated in a lab in anyway whatsoever. Only microevolution and its replication in a lab is minimal at best.

Micro and macro evolution are the same thing and that is evolution plain and simple. It has been proven and it is based in reality unlike any religions.

Yet the chances of something as complex as the human eye alone, just "evolving" SOLELY through random mutations, within the timeframe applicable, make the concept of "evolution" as we currently perceive it, very unlikely. To say the least.
But you only have to see the wonders of the natural world to sense that.
There is always more to be known...
That is the only thing we truly know.

I just explained to you how scientists don't have faith. Christians say "I know for absolute certain that God exists". Scientists don't make absolute statements like that. In science, everything is tentative. Even well established theories like the theory of gravity. And scientists simply regard these theories as: "the best explanation we currently have for a natural phenomena that may or may not end up being revised or discarded if new evidence is discovered".

  • @SiiriCressey
    @SiiriCressey 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

"The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far. The sciences, each straining in its own direction, have hitherto harmed us little; but some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the light into the peace and safety of a new dark age." Howard Phillips Lovecraft
In other words, so many humans are terrified of how insignificant we actually are to reality in general that they would rather keep themselves and everyone else in ignorance than face it.

Speaking as a Mutant Catholic-Buddhist, I identify my personal Faith as a means of keeping my Ego in check. Might Intelligent Design have merit as a stepping stone towards a synthesis of the millions of years that have led up to our current position as one of the domiant lifeforms on the planet and our speculative Origins? Adaptivity is the cornerstone of Evolution. If you want to know the "Mysteries" just look at Creation...and scientists do. Open minds are important. Thanks, Henry! :)

You misunderstand ID. Nowhere does ID insinuate God, only an intelligent agent. The theory of ID itself is a bit shaky in its current form but shows promise and IS testable. Evolution has a lot of evidence for it and is fact, however it depends on what you define evolution to encompass. There is a lot of inference and assumptions when asserting that all life came from a single cell. Why can't evolution and ID both be right? Oh right, people stick to their bias and ignore any conflicting evidence

  • @sickmary

The more knowledge we gain the more we begin to understand how ignorant we are of the universe. The gaps don't get bigger they always get smaller. The more we know it just reveals new gaps for us to explore and learn. That's the Idea, to continue to learn about our universe rather than throw in an answer that we have no evidence for. You treat admitting ignorance as if it is a sin. When it is the true Humility. "We don't know" is the proper response to questions we don't have evidence to answer.

I'm stoked that HR did a piece on this. I must have missed it when it aired. The irreducible complexity fallacy is so insulting to what we know about biology, and evolution that I can't believe anyone with the ability to reason will blindly support it. It has been shown time, and again that it does not stand up. Their precious flagellum has been show as easily reducible if you don't assume the current function. It beautifully supports evolution, by means of natural selection.

Also, I'm a biologist. I've studied evolution. Hell, I've made it happen in petri dishes. ID has no supporting evidence, and if you can provide something that doesn't boil down to "evolution can't prove X therefore ID happened" or "*insert religious text* says X" then I'll retract that statement and consider ID a legitimate theory.
Finally, Science is EVERY field of study. That's why faith is faith, where people believe things specifically without (and frequently in direct defiance of) evidence

That's wonderful that you have cited those atrocities. However, your argument was not "religion has caused murder" you argument was that "religion has cause more murder than anything else". Its an absurd argument that cannot be proven, but rest solely on your own circular assumptions. Ironic because as a secularist I would think that you would have a higher standard of evidence.

My point is, that just because you or I lack the imagination or (self-)education it doesn't make facts untrue. I think that virtually everyone is capable of understanding evolution - provided they try, honestly, and read and research the required literature and such. I happened to put enough pieces of the puzzle together to understand enough of natural selection to accept it as truth based on VERY solid and undeniable facts.

Evolution is still in a "flat world" state. Neither theory can be proven.
    Scientific Method:
    1) Observe
    2) Construct a hypothesis
    3) Test your hypothesis
    4) Conduct experiment
    5) Accept hypothesis
I'm pretty sure we can only do #2 for both ideas.
