  • USS Washtenaw County (LST-1166) was a Terrebonne Parish-class tank landing ship in commission in the United States Navy from 1953 to 1973. Named for Washtenaw County, Michigan, she was the only U.S. Navy vessel to bear the name.

    My grandfather was on here in Little Creek, VA in 1955. I found out today looking through some of his letters from the time, he passed in 2020. This is awesome to see although sad it wasn't maintained

      Thank you for watching. As far as I know there is a memorial in the Washtenaw County Building in Ann Arbor. They have the ships bell and wheel, and a model of the ship.

    Very nicely done. I was watching and thought to myself you had to have shot some of the footage with a camera drone, and then read the credits. Nice edit!!!

      Thanks! The Avata and mini-2 are a great 'team'. I'm waiting to see what the rumored Air3 looks like, I might need a third drone. (and a fourth, and a fifth.....)

    She stays afloat because she was at one point converted into a minesweeper and is full of foam

    • @Cthippo1
      @Cthippo1 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The reason she was converted to a minesweeper was that she was used to sail around Haiphong Harbor after the Vietnam War. During the war the US mined the harbor using B-52 bombers and as part of the peace accords was required to sweep those mines. We did so using helicopter towed mine sweeping sleds, and then sent the Wastenaw County in to prove that the harbor was clear by driving around in it!

    There is a triangular structure on the front, that has a long antenna, it is at the back on the historical pictures, i wonder why?

    • @BreakWindDrone
      @BreakWindDrone  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I posted some then/now pictures in the community section of this channel. I really hadn't noticed how much the bow section had changed. The triangle/pyramid structure has a tall pole at the top and what looks like footholds so you can climb it and a few cables from the top to the deck, perhaps to stabilize it. What's it for? I have no idea. Thanks for watching.

    I wonder how much water is actually inside the boat as it looks be be laying a bit low in the stern

    • @BreakWindDrone
      @BreakWindDrone  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      When 1166 was repurposed as a minesweeper (MSS-2) the lower levels were filled with foam, so I assume it is more-or-less sink-proof. But you are correct, the stern is lower than normal when you compare to this picture on navsource: www.navsource.org/archives/10/16/1016116601.jpg

      Far as I know the lower levels were filled with foam during it's final assignment as a mine sweeper, so it should float for a while longer.

    Kind of surprising they'd lay down a new LST in '51 when they had so many surplus/mothballed ones from WWII.

    • @BreakWindDrone
      @BreakWindDrone  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      1166 was in the Terrebonne class, which was 56 feet longer than the previous '542 class'. It also had 4 engines instead of 2 and a cruising speed of 14 knots instead of 10. But yes, why were new ships built when there were hundreds of old ones available?... Thanks for watching.

    I think she is down by the stern on purpose as it keeps the bow out of water in case the seals of the clam shell bow springs a leak. It would sink quickly if that were to happen

    • @BreakWindDrone
      @BreakWindDrone  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I believe there are ballast tanks so the angle of the boat could be adjusted to match the beach they were landing on, but you're right I think 'normal' had the bow higher than the stern. @kenheron has a great tour video of 325 which explains much of the design and operation of an LST, I used some his footage on my LST-1074 Video

      The doors are above water, otherwise she would sink in beaching.@@BreakWindDrone

      Correction to my last. The doors extend below the waterline, but the "roll-down from the ramp to the tank deck is above the waterline.

      1166 was purchased by a private party in 1983 with intentions of restoration. They buyer passed away in 1993, which brought the restoration to a halt. In 2003 it was purchased by a non-profit and the restoration started up again but lacked the needed funding. In 2008 the restoration was again put on hold as vandals had removed much of the internals then it was used as a drug lab. Around $4 million USD was spent on drug, lead paint, and PCB removal. It's now owned by the Coast Guard. This original thought was to haul it out to sea and sink it for an artificial reef. This plan fell apart as the lower levels had been filled with foam to prevent it from sinking during it's final Vietnam tour as a mine sweeper. So about the only thing that can be done is to haul it into dry dock and scrap it.

    A sad end to a good ship. I spent three months on her during her 1968 deployment up the Mekong river. During the year I spent on the river several of her sister ships rotated in and out. The Washtenaw was probably the best. Rest in peace.

      The Avata is an amazing drone and with the motion controller a newbie can get the hang of it in a few minutes. The top-down and the not-so-good bow orbit were done with the Mini2. Thanks for watching

      There is a document on the EPA website estimating the salvage costs at $4.1 million and unfortunately vessel recovery budgets are very underfunded. $4.7 million has been spent so far on hazmat remediation, but more remains due to lead paint, asbestos, etc.
