Happy this system seems to be a flawless release! As you mentioned, the only possible downside might be the exclusion of 32X games, however I'm sure compatability could be introduced in a later version and/or firmware update if need be. But unlike what a certain other unreleased product claims to be offering, I would rather take perfect compatibility with the entire Genesis/SMS/CD collection over "hybrid emulation" covering the Genesis/SMS/CD/32X.
Sorry to go off topic, but Could you make a video on hacking a slim ps3? Someone by the name of techjames made a video yesterday on doing just that, but i do not trust it.
MrMario2011 If only. My machine has arrived with a pre-release firmware (v2.5) which can’t be upgraded by SD Card. I’m missing the startup sound, the free built-in game and there are load of problems with screen display and game audio. Raised a support ticket with Analogue and have heard nothing in over 12 hours.
my question is regarding the SMS compatibility. How do they emulate the pause button as it's not on the adaptor, and does it add a bios emulation to allow for the FM audio to be done? is it compatible with the adaptor that StoneAge sells that includes these features? Master System had great games, but the FM audio on them is truly stunning and I wish more people addressed it.
@@happyspaceinvader508 A support ticket not being answered within 12 hours isn't surprising to me, hence why many companies say they'll reply within 1-2 business days. Hope you'll get sorted, though. that review embargo thing is an awesome advertisement strategy... suddenly I had 4 videos about this console in my sub feed - it makes it look like its a big thing everybody should have.
Great video, dude! The Mega SG definitely looks worth its asking price! I do love my OG Megadrive and I would never get rid of it, but this looks like something worth getting for travel or taking to people's houses! And I do love the fact that it plays practically everything you can throw at it!
This sounds like a really nice option, especially if you don't already have a Genesis/Mega Drive. When you think about the value it offers in comparison to a working console plus component cable along with component to HDMI upscaler it starts to make quite a lot of sense. More tech savvy people and those looking to play games from multiple systems would probably be better off looking at the MiSTer project but for the average person just looking to play their old collections with the minimum of fuss and great quality this seems hard to beat.
Beauty can't wait to get mine apparently delivery tomorrow to Canada but we'll see. One thing I hope this inspires is someone to make a Sega CD flashcart that plugs into the expansion port, I'd totally be into that.
Thanks for the very extended testing video review of the Analogue SG. I did test and review many fake Sega consoles and must say this one is expensive only the best you can get indeed. Support for Sega CD, Everdrive and Virtua Racing this is .... awesome :D Really like your channel and the unique content you make.
Great job as usual. I’m still on the fence with the Mega SG but only because I don’t play Genesis games nearly often enough to justify the price. That being said, I own a Super NT and couldn’t be happier with it. If the Genesis is your go to 16 bit console then getting the Mega SG should be a no brainer.
First of all, solid review. Thank you. With that said: most of the clone systems I've encountered over the years didn't use a GOAC at all. If you have a model with an actual GOAC, chances are accuracy, latency, and compatibility are at least *decent*, and can often be improved with modding. In my experience most of the clones I've run across used ultracheap baby ARMs and ran SHODDY emulators. The shoddy emulator based systems... well... they're mostly garbage for accuracy IMHO and input lag can be an issue too. But they are cheap, and they do offer basic HDMI out of the box. Some of them have very nice shells too as you mention. I wish the Mega Sg was licensed and used a repro of the Model 2 chassis. It's still fairly small, and nostalgia darnit!!! The Mega SG is sort of the best of both worlds and then some. Using an FPGA to create low-level simulations of the chips involved is the best way to go. Extremely good accuracy and compatibility, near perfect sound, and flawless no-lag 1080p HDMI. Plus Sega CD compatibility... but because there's no RGB output, you can't use it with a 32X. I'm not sure the Altera Cyclone V has the spare horsepower to mimic the small army of comparatively powerful chips in a 32X. We'll see, maybe a future iteration will have a faster FPGA some day. Speaking of Sega CD, I'd like to see them tackle that next. Release a Mega Sg CD unit that can work with either a Mega Sg OR original hardware. Good working Sega CD hardware is getting more expensive.
Very glad to hear it's as great as we all expected. On the audio front, I just want to point out that there were several different revisions of model 1 and model 2 Genesis consoles, with different sound circuitry. According to a prominent post on Sega 16 forums "GUIDE: Telling apart good Genesis 1s and 2s from bad ones" there are many differences in each revision as far as filters and preamps. The Mega Sg is more focused on accurately reproducing a YM2612 and giving you a clean output of that, rather than coloring the signal with filters and bad preamps. But at least Analogue is giving you the option to tweak that a bit--it's clear they knew that some people would be a bit offset with the audio being different but it's analogous to adding scanlines to make it look more like a CRT. As a purist that's how I need to look at the Mega Sg---It's seemingly the best way to get the best picture and sound on a modern TV. That said, I play a model 1 on a PVM because I can.
You forgot about the original NT. It actually didn't use FPGA but used repurposed original CPU and PPU chips out of original Nintendo machines. People weren't keen about them stripping down used Nintendo consoles and so they ended up going FPGA after that with the NT Mini.
@Arnold101Knight Indeed they did. Although supposedly these were consoles that had issues aka were broken or weren't working but who really knows for sure. The community wasn't too happy about this and thus they ended up switching over to FPGA which is now pretty much their calling card.
@Arnold101Knight Famicoms are a dime a dozen, and I'm sure front-loader NES's aren't rare either. It's not like tearing down a Star Fox cartridge for Star Fox 2 Repros
@Chris Taber I personally have no problem with it, although I know some ppl that do. Yall did the right thing either way switching to FPGA, and now it's kind of become your thing. By the way, any idea when we will be seeing the Game Gear cartridge adapters for the Mega SG? I am very eager to play them.
The game Gargoyles only works on a real Mega Drive due to a programming error. For the longest tone emulators couldn't run it. You should try that game 😉
On one of the many Mega SG reviews I've seen, I saw Gargoyles running just fine on the system. I believe it was MetalJesusRocks, but I could be mistaken, but it was running great!
Hey is there any way you could do a future video for people on a budget trying to revitalize their OG hardware w/o breaking the bank? Best upscaling options on a budget, stuff like that? Rgb cables for old systems ect. I think that'd be great coming from you dude. Thanks
Get a PS2, it have tons of retro releases (ports) for it , official and unnoficcial, you can find them on forums with little digging and there are cheap mods to run it off of USB or cards etc and stream it on a newer telly. I have that and next to it I don't need a single other console for years on. Plus there are pis for other things such as dreamcast emulations etc, you can run almost everything even on that and it doesn't cost too much.
I don't have much use for these premium FPGA consoles myself as I don't own any games on cartridge nor do I wish to start collecting them, but I can't help but admire how much pride and effort went into the design and accuracy of these machines from Analogue. I find myself looking on with envy.
The TecToy from Brazil, still produces the megadrive, but without compatibility with the sega cd and no hdmi, only composite video and a input for sd card to play roms. A good quality piece to have on your collection!
Bravo Analogue! I've been really excited to see life returning to the Sega Genesis. Different developers are starting to make new games for the system and the home brew community has been steady and very helpful to people who want to start programming games for the console. I was born in 1993 and I grew up with a super Nintendo and N64. I discovered the genesis at the end of my junior high days and the frame rate immediately captivated me. Nice, I was going to buy a megadrive, but this just arrived! What a great system to check out all those games I missed while growing up with C64 / A1200 :)
I am so glad they added a low pass filter option for the audio! I rather like the muffled sound of the original system as it's just a bit nostalgic for me. This definitely scratches that itch :)
6:04 The Mega SG (with or without low pass filter) sounds brighter, because the lower Hz are missing, so the higher ones have more room. Obviously, there'll be some hardware hum, as well. Less rumbling bass to create dynamic loudness changes in the higher ranges, makes the whole mix less dynamic, making it sound neater and under more control, instead of gritty, dark and a bit out of control.
The original FM chip actually had a low pass filter on anyway so its kind of a mystery why it isn't enabled by default. It's not exact but it's far closer.

Gotta be honest, MVG, MylifeinGaming, GameSack and Rerez have all uploaded a review of this system at the same time and i had to watch this one first, keep up the great work MVG.
@@overlordalfredo I highly doubt that they were asked to hold back. Analogue wants them to promote the product on the ship/launch date. Ironically, the one with the most subscribers is the worst review IMO.
@@PrinceMarcusWilliam well I do believe that they were at least asked to hold back their reviews so that not a single YT channel could get a head start and fortify the potential customers minds on the system. Marketing wise if you have a promoter you do not know if he will promote positively or negatively, you want to have multiple opinions to reference to. So having all the reviews more or less at the same time is a very big thing in terms of marketing for them. Also why do you think there are 10+ bigger YT channels which all release a review at the exact same day? That is by far not a coincidence. MJR for example uploads Tuesdays and Fridays for the past 2 years now. - so why it is on a Monday this time?
Whether the opinion is positive or negitive the product will sell (especially from Analogne). I'm sure that there might be well more than 10 YT people out there reviewing the system by now (no idea on the time frame and I don't really care as long as it is less than a day). Your last response on MJR doesn't make sense to me.
@@PrinceMarcusWilliam MJR has a regular upload schedule that has never changed in the past 2 years. He does Tuesday videos and Friday videos. And nnow all of a sudden without any announcement or reason the video releases on a Monday instead of Tuesday. That is really suspicious... Also the problem is not if the product sells or not, it is all about the first impression. If you have 10+ (as I already said before, more than 10) opinions the overall feedback on first review will be rather positive. So if one really bad review for your product should be amongst that it will not affect customers reception of the product much. And the shipping date for pre-orders will be wendnesday, so the reviews from those systems come in just 48 hrs. Before pre-orders arrive so you make sure no "black sheep" reviews your system and upon launch your system has already good reputation. That is a really common business practice for marketing on influencial media.
I received my shipping notification on Friday, so I can’t wait to get mine! Given the master system compatibility, I would be curious to see how they handle compatibility with F-16 Fighting Falcon when the Sega Card adapter is released. It is supposedly the only game that the Genesis cannot play, due to a special graphic mode that is only available on the Master System.
I don't think it sold half as well in the US. There was all that furore around the whole Game Genie thing at the time and as I recall that didn't help Codemasters much at the time.
Damn! It's obvious that a buttload of work went into that thing! Well done Analogue, keep up the good work! Maybe for your next trick you can release your own sega-CD addon? Hint, hint!
Uncle Ned no work went into this lmao, just another cheap chinese clone that failed to get sega megadrive right, sad attempt and saying it is fpga when it is not,i got a free one so time for rifle practice.
My favourite Mega Drive game was a biggie, that of Zero Tolerance which had a huge map and for its time abs amazing graphics, sadly didn't age too well imho but it was the first real go at having something a bit more advanced for such a low end machine.
The audio sounds brighter as a *result* of it being cleaner. High frequency detail, such as high frequency sound, is less resilient to noise-related distortion.
Great review MVG! The only thing putting me off getting an unit is the price. $190 is a tough sell for a causal gamer. But it was nice to see a company making a retro unit that does things correctly.
I don't own any of Analogues products but I'm pretty certain I'm going to start buying them all now I know they are here for the long haul. Nice shirt too!

Wow, very nice review. I was wondering if this was running Titan's demos and at that second he said yes, it runs Titan demos :)
Excellent review and the usual quality from analogue and MVG. Between this review and Game Sack's in depth review you'll be sure to have everything covered.
I don't understand people complaining about the price...this will play Genesis from all regions, Master System, Game Gear, SG-1000, and SC 3000. That's FIVE systems. Pretty much every cartridge or card based console Sega has ever made other than 32X will work on this. Hell if someone came out with a console that ONLY played Game Gear for $200 I would buy it.
For those who care about upscaling and are trying to decide between the Mega SG, or an original Genesis+upscaler, it'd be worth looking into whether there are any games that have issues with the latter. Games don't always play nice with original hardware + external upscaler combos. For example, I've seen that Super Mario Sunshine and the Mega Man X Anniversary Collection both react badly to Wii-HDMI upscalers (especially the Anniversary Collection), with both games becoming overall darkened... except for the bright greens, which instead become hypersaturated.
Its just as good as Super NT. 32x games I can live without but would be nice if they can implement that later on and maybe a matching CD unit. Not sure how hard it would be to create a CD unit.
I have an original model 1 US Genesis but it is kinda finickey when starting games usually i just get the Sega copyright notice screen then the screen goes black takes two or three tries to get a game running, anyways my solution was to get Analogues Mega Sg and am really enjoying the system. I might buy another model 1 for when my garage sale bought one bites the dust. Great review Analouge have released nothing but amazing clone systems and i think they will continue to put out high quality clone systems and i will buy them all.

Ohh so cool!! Can't wait to play Sonic on my PAL Megadrive edition Mega SG!
Looks like a cool system and probably the best clone out there. I’m still trying to get my hands on a Mega CD but they are bit hard to find in the wild and they are a bit expansive on conventions. Also still looking for a copy of Wolfchild (the cartridge version).
Forget Sonic I'm playing Shinobi and Thunderforce lol
Retro Soul Thunderforce, geest game especially Thunderforce 4.
Even with the low pass filter option turned on, it is *very* easy to tell the mega sg from the original megadrive.
Gotta be honest, MVG, MylifeinGaming, GameSack and Rerez have all uploaded a review of this system at the same time and i had to watch this one first, keep up the great work MVG.
Metal Jesus did as well, I guess they were asked to hold back the videos until today...
@@PrinceMarcusWilliam
MJR has a regular upload schedule that has never changed in the past 2 years.
That is awesome, I have that same mini console with the red and blue controllers haha.
Just kidding. The MD audio was so awesome ..the SNES sounded a bit too clean and clinical by comparison. Great that they included that old game, too.
I'm sticking with original hardware, component cables, and a PVM, but that 8bitDo controller is great
Can’t wait for this console to make to my doorstep!
That's one slick looking Sega Genesis/mega drive games
Great video brotha! I've been on the fence about a Mega Sg, but I think this has pushed me over and I I'll pick one up.
I'm so jelly right now God I wish I had one of those like always great review man
I received my shipping notification on Friday, so I can’t wait to get mine! Given the master system compatibility, I would be curious to see how they handle compatibility with F-16 Fighting Falcon when the Sega Card adapter is released. It is supposedly the only game that the Genesis cannot play, due to a special graphic mode that is only available on the Master System.
Did you get it?
That is one slick Windjammers shirt.
You should test micro machines 2. It has two extra controller ports in the cartridge. Wonder how it'll work.
I've got that game. Can test it if they give me a free console too. 🤣😂
@Chris Taber micro machines is a £2 game it's not rare ... I have it and probably paid £1 for it
I don't think it sold half as well in the US. There was all that furore around the whole Game Genie thing at the time and as I recall that didn't help Codemasters much at the time.
Considering the FPGA is likely an accurate hardware clone of the OG Genesis, it should work perfectly.
@@jrapocalypse Jealous employee of rival detected.
@@jrapocalypse you seem very very triggered
Awesome video mate!!
The heavy chord sounds more synthetic, less rounded and deep, more dithery even with the low pass on
My favourite Mega Drive game was a biggie, that of Zero Tolerance which had a huge map and for its time abs amazing graphics, sadly didn't age too well imho but it was the first real go at having something a bit more advanced for such a low end machine.
Awesome review! Thanks for the info!
The audio sounds brighter as a *result* of it being cleaner. High frequency detail, such as high frequency sound, is less resilient to noise-related distortion.
That's...not it at all actually.
Getting one on payday. Can't wait to play sonic again
Waiting here in the Philippines its 12 in the midnight. JUST FOR ANOTHER AWESOME MVG EPISODE
Fantastic review! A must have I think.
Great review MVG! The only thing putting me off getting an unit is the price. $190 is a tough sell for a causal gamer. But it was nice to see a company making a retro unit that does things correctly.
damn these guys gave this system to all the influencers out there
This is the only channel doing a “review” of these today that admits it was sent a unit for review.
is this true? any youtuber who was sent a product to review must disclose it otherwise its a breach of Terms and Conditions
I don't own any of Analogues products but I'm pretty certain I'm going to start buying them all now I know they are here for the long haul. Nice shirt too!
Wow, very nice review. I was wondering if this was running Titan's demos and at that second he said yes, it runs Titan demos :)
Now they just need to do a Dreamcast and they have my money.
Excellent review and the usual quality from analogue and MVG. Between this review and Game Sack's in depth review you'll be sure to have everything covered.
Your videos are top notch and very enjoyable.
No reason to watch any other review of this. Modern Vintages gamers knowledge is the best.
I love dithering blending
id love to buy this console once im done getting me a nintendo switch to jailbreak and a new gaming laptop and tv
Safe to say that mega drive and master system cartridges will become rarer and more expensive on ebay now
I'm drooling over this, I knew it would be good. Simply amazing. I want one! :)
I'd wait if I were you. I am. I mean it seems way too bare bones out if the box. Literally.
I'm interested in it to play Sega CD games in HD. That's something no one else has done in any capacity.
7:56 omg that hit so well!
Great video. You got me hyped for this wonderful piece of kit. Poor thing looks lost when connected to the Mega CD, tho xD
Mega SG? More like MEGA SABADO GIGANTE!!!!!
Seems perfect, but the blue and red buttons would be much better if they were grey.
They can be - Analogue are selling it in four colour variations. Three match the original MD/Genesis regions and one is white.
Came here for the review, but got the names of some games I have never heard before.
Put a headphones on and compare sound in left and right channels from 6:11 to 6:17, and then from 6:25 to 6:30.
This looks awesome. Thanks for your review
Great review Analouge have released nothing but amazing clone systems and i think they will continue to put out high quality clone systems and i will buy them all.
stumbled across your channel and you are great, subbed!
Damnations some of those games look sooooo good at 60fps....sigh I'm starting to be one of those 60fps people now. Much like the mega NT, another flawless product by the guru, MVG
