Infiniti has just unveiled the latest QX80, a luxurious SUV closely related to the Nissan Patrol. This new model is now powered by a state-of-the-art 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine, which replaces the previous 5.6-liter naturally-aspirated V8. The new engine delivers an impressive power output of 335 kilowatts, which is 37 kilowatts more than the current Patrol V8. Additionally, torque has been significantly increased by 138 newton-meters, reaching a substantial 698 newton-meters.
When compared to the Land Cruiser 300 with its twin-turbo diesel engine, the QX80 boasts 108 kilowatts more power, though it falls slightly short in torque by just 2 newton-meters. On the other hand, the Lexus LX600 with its twin-turbo petrol V6 lags behind with 30 kilowatts less power and 50 newton-meters less torque.
The new QX80 features an improved nine-speed automatic transmission, replacing the older seven-speed unit. This new transmission, with its wider gear ratio, is designed to enhance acceleration and fuel efficiency, resulting in a more responsive driving experience. The engine, coded as 'VR35DDT', appears to be an upgraded version of the 3.0-liter twin-turbo engine found in the Nissan Z sports car.
Exciting new features in the Infiniti QX80 include an air suspension system with adaptive dampers, which greatly improves the cabin's tranquility by enhancing the vehicle's torsional rigidity. This luxurious SUV draws inspiration from the Infiniti QX Monograph concept revealed in mid-2023, offering a preview of the highly anticipated 'Y63' Nissan Patrol expected to arrive in Australia by 2025.
Both the Infiniti QX80 and the upcoming Nissan Patrol will share similarities in design, though there will be some differences. Spy shots suggest the Patrol will have conventional door handles and larger headlights, while the QX80 will feature hidden handles and more streamlined headlights. A production-ready prototype of the Patrol shown to US dealers resembled a Range Rover, with a more rugged look and updated headlights and tail-lights. The interior has been completely revamped, showcasing a modern and sleek design.
The 2025 Infiniti QX80 is set to be unveiled on March 21, Australian time, just before the New York Auto Show. The 2025 Nissan Patrol will be revealed in the coming months, promising exciting advancements and a fresh new look for both vehicles.
