Best way to watch it: wait until it's nighttime, turn off all the lights & put it on. Really sets the mood. Also, it's crazy how this show had dark themes & imagery, had characters use real guns & would routinely punch/kick & knock each other around back in that era when censorship was heavy. The show also mentioned drug dealers & had one mobster's son going through withdrawal. In a children's cartoon! They could NEVER get away with that now!
It's incredible how one voice actor can become known as THE official Batman yet never wear the suit in a movie. It goes to show how important the voice is in the chareacter of Batman. Batman truly is all about the voice in my opinion. Thank you Mr. Conroy for making my childhood happier. You are more than just that celebrity we know as Batman's voice, you are a human being with many other awesome qualities too.
RIP Kevin Conroy...this show was a love letter to Batman, comic books and Animation. I really enjoy learning about all the Talents involved in this show from the voice actors to the writers to the producers... it's a masterpiece.
This my favorite Batman cartoon series. It's dark, it urges kids to feel smarter on lessons on society (like Feat of Clay, Parts 1 and 2), Shirley Walker's music is superb, and the animation is fantastic.
I'm gonna go ahead and guess that English isn't your first language. No worries though. The only thing хорошо about my Russian is the pronunciation, so I have no room to talk. But yes, Batman good.
Two-Face to Joker: “Get out of my face!” The Joker: “Which one?” One of the funniest lines from this show. This show is a masterpiece. The animation, the writing, acting, everything. Just an all around excellent show.
The thing I loved most about the animated series was it perfectly balanced the adult-ish themes but kept the target audience still as kid-friendly as possible. Although there was psychological torment, some flirtation, emotional scars that had consequences for character subsequent behaviors, no one actually died, or at least practically no one. You didn't have super villains wielding machine guns mowing down innocent civilians. You figured that there were real stakes involved every time Bruce Wayne donned the cape, but it never took itself so seriously that it got depressing.
I've recently re-watched the entire series earlier this year, the first time since it aired here in Germany in the nineties, so I had mostly forgotten every episodes plot. I got a lady-friend to watch the show with me, she never knew there were cartoon adventures with Batman, but she was openminded when I told her it's not your average-kids-show. Started with 'Heart of Ice' and she was hooked, she actually was kinda sad afterwards. Since she works in coaching, she grew to like the psychological exaggerations of the series, something she had no expectations of finding in a 'kiddie show'... she mostly felt sorry for Clayface, Harvey Dent, Victor Fries, Poison Ivy, Killer Croc, and especially the Ventriloquist, and she could not for the HECK of it understand why Harley Quinn kept up with her abusive relationship with that psychopathic clown... Watched the series over a course of 4 months with her, and sometimes her enthusiasm went down when Robin got involved or it got too silly, but she was surprised when the show just ended and I hadn't told her beforehand. Bought a copy of Mask of Phantasm a week later, which wasn't part of the blu ray set I had, and she loved it! :-)
Sounds awesome. And yeah it kind of sucks that most people in the west have fully associated anything animated with being childish or for children. An unfortunate stigma behind anything animated, I have a friend who refuses to watch family guy because it’s a “cartoon”. Meanwhile Japan and anime....
Batman: Mask of the Phantasm Was an incredibly underrated movie that came out and was made by the same team that did Batman the animated series, I still think it’s one of the best Batman movies
It definitely deserves to be remembered, but just because it deserves it doesn’t mean it will be :(. I mean look how Warner Bros. has acted like there never was a DCAU when trying to make their justice League Universe. Kids under about 20 have no idea about all the completely amazing Animated Series that made DC just as good as if not better than the MCU. All they know about DC is the live action movies and they think DC sucks except for Batman sometimes. They didn’t hire not one of the creative minds behind the DCAU to supervise and guide the DCEU. I honestly fear it will be forgotten and never truly replicated.
Great video! Great cartoon, too. All you animated Batman fans, don't ignore Batman Beyond. I know there was a lot of hate when it came out, but it really is a good show. Especially if you love Batman, like I do. There are old villains who have evolved, and a whole bunch of new villains who all feature excellent voice acting.
Batman: The Animated Series was such a huge part of my childhood. This came on tv right when I came home from school and was what I would look forward to all day. I had no idea I was watching such a legendary show until years later. I remember the stories were so amazing and deep, then 30 minutes later the show was over and the end credits would play…I can still remember feeling sad after each show because I wanted more of it. They would go so deep into a story and then wrap it up and end it quickly. Each episode delved into such amazing plots but they left so much meat on the bones. They had to wrap it up quickly bc it’s only 22minutes they had + time for commercials. Ahhh what a time of life that was. Thank you to the creators of this, y’all did a wonderful job.
Absolutely nailed it! And thanks for including one of my all-time favs, "Babydoll"! It's heartbreaking. (I would also include the episode "Sideshow", an interesting character-study, and "Be a Clown".) And FYI: if you pay close attention in "Harley's Holiday" she the first ever to figure out Bruce's ID! You forgot to mention the movies though; 'Phantasm' alone is better than any of the live-action films that came out in the 90's! However, I do think you should try to give 'Batman Beyond' another chance; it's like Batman meets 'Bladerunner'! =) Great Vid!
This show, and in particular Mask of the Phantasm, was a cornerstone of my childhood. The first cartoon that really made me feel a wide range of emotions. Really kinda elevated my little kid mind a lil bit. Definitely a contender for best Batman adaptation and also one of the best cartoons in general.
This is my favorite version of Batman and what actually got me into Batman, I remember making sure I didn’t play around too long after school so I didn’t miss it. It also had the best theme song and I loved the opening credits.
I definitely appreciate this series more older than I did as a child since I was 3 when The Animated Series appeared on television. I remember having mixed feelings on Batman when he appeared on Justice League and Static Shock due to his emotionally distant nature, but the first seasons of this show is what I adore about Batman: He has a balance of hope, compassion and witty humor. Watching the episodes again also helped me love Clock King, Baby Doll, Harvey Dent and Poison Ivy for a time when she wanted a family.
I am currently watching this series right now and this series still holds up. As an adult you definitely appreciate this series more because of how mature it is compared to other cartoons that came out back in that time period and cartoons that have come out now. My favourite episodes though would be episodes that are not that popular but I love them. I like "The Cape and The Cowl Conspiracy "Night Of The Ninja" and the excellent "Nothing To Fear" which is in my opinion an episode which could have been a full length animated film.
I just rewatched the entire series. This series is the GOAT. I remember when my kids were little and they said it was too scary. I was an adult when the show started so I didn’t realize it. Looking at it again, I can see why they were scared. I also have always wondered why the riddler wasn’t Batman’s arch nemesis since Batman is supposed to be the world’s greatest detective.
I was 4 when the show came out, so it's a little weird to me to read that kids thought it was too scary. But it's also a good thing because that meant that the show did its job: telling intense, macabre, noirish action tales.
The Riddlers too neurotic and he handicaps/foils himself to the point that it’s hard to respect him as someone worthy of being his arch-nemesis. The Joker however is his complete and almost perfect foil. Order vs Chaos, planning vs free balling, logic vs utter insanity, and morality vs do whatever. The Joker, most of the time, can’t be bullied, scared, reasoned with by normal means, and his goals are sometimes just utterly unpredictable or non sensical. Everything Batman uses in his psychological and physical arsenal against bad guys are usually useless against him. Bane was a good villain but he’s pretty much just a “I’m arguably as smart as you and stronger than you” and that’s it. But more or less typical bad guy.
I remember when they would play the credits at the end so fast, I had no idea who the voice actors were. So you must have recorded each episode then paused it when the cast credit came up to figure out all the actors. I loved coming home from school and watching this plus the other cartoons from like 3-5 pm.
This tv show will always remind me of my childhood.im 32 now and i still consider it the best animated show.dark and mature, yet watchable by all ages.great video man.waiting for the new batman adventures one. 🦇
I wish you had mentioned "Mask of the Phantasm". It's clearly a consequence (or a by-product) of this show and, IMO, among the best Batman films ever done, competing (and winning over) several live action films.
I've watched the Animated Series back in the days. Unfortunately Kevin Conroy passed away on Nov. 10th of 2020 and Earl Boen passed away on Jan 5th this year.
you can actually hear Tim Curry's Joker... or well at least, his creepy laugh... his laughing line was used in a joker episode (if i remember well the first one, when he kidnap the major's son) for a giant Jack in the box trap puppet.
I listened to both, the Jack in the Box from Be a Clown (When he kidnaps the majors son), is Tom Curry. The other one might be him, but it doesn't sound as deep as his voice.
I grew up watching this show and loving every episode, re-watching it as an adult makes me realize how well they handled the maturity of the material well being a cartoon. I am so happy that I was also able to show my young cousin this show and they loved every episode. Funny that you mentioned you didn't really like Batman Beyond since it was the closest to a continual adaption of the Batman the animated series :P
Shout out to the brilliant title cards and incredibly cinematic music as well! (Rip Shirley Walker) One little nit-- you mentioned in Dreams of Darkness that Batman is committed at Arkham because they don't believe he's Batman. I'm pretty sure they commit him because they do believe he's Batman (who is nuts!)
I remember being 9 years old coming home from school or thankfully on the days I had off counting the hours until I could watch this show. I have every episode saved on my laptop and it’s truly one of my all time go to’s to binge over and over again.
The episode with Clayface was the first one I ever saw, and had probably seen it the most times on repeat. That was kind of a funny time in the early 90s were so many shows and movies seemed to have the need for a shape-shifting character thanks the popularity of the T1000.
Manbat & Clayface scared the hell out of me as a kid. This show is perfection. From the mature themes to the score the characters everything was amazing. So happy I got to experience it growing up.
Best TV adaptation of a superhero property to date. A phenomenal animated series that didn’t undermine its primary adolescent audience, backed up by brilliant voice work by Kevin Conroy and the likes of Mark Hamill. Best episode Beware The Gray Ghost… it really leaves you in tears.
My favorite episodes are when the villains work together against Batman, it's always entertaining watching them by to strategize and bicker with each other
I loved this show when I was a kid and I watched it all the time. I think that this is definitely the best batman animated tv show. I alway's loved batman and he is still my favorite superhero. Mark Hamill's joker voice is perfect and Kevin Conroy has a great batman voice.
@@chillabrew_glycolinstall The story basically already continued. The DCAU/Timmverse goes from BTAS through Superman and concludes with Justice League [Unlimited]. I think they've lost too much creative steam to recapture it though, especially if the studio is looking to tie into whatever this Pattinson version is going to be.
You're right in regards towards it influencing the style of American Animation for quite some time, as it was the first major production animation to feature an Americanized take on Anime-based animation(combining the stylings of yesteryear with the slow-growing American interests in Anime themes). Heck, to this day, there are still studios producing a more "fluid" take on this animation aspect(as Even Amazon Studios's successful series "Vox Machina" uses influence upon this basis, though leaning a bit more towards Anime-style). So, Batman: The Animated Series really opened the doors for works that came after it. It's just the saddening ordeal that Animated works, now of days, are being more scarcely developed.
That’s the story I’ve heard. Although you can hear some of his audio in “Christmas with the Joker” when Robin and Batman look for Joker in his warehouse trap
I was born in 1980. So I was well aware of cartoon's restrictions. If any cartoon started out good in the 1st season. The parent backlash would make sure the the subsequent seasons sucked. I couldn't believe how awesome Batman TAS was. The whole series! The action that they got away with! The dynamic story telling and character building. It was truly jaw dropping to have this on Fox after school!
Always love this series. It was friendly enough for young viewers without being too violent yet appeals to the older crowd (teens-adults) at the same time with the moody design work of Gotham, characters of the city and its storylines. Plus the voice work is top notch with its title hero, rogues gallery and Alfred & Robin and Barbara/Batgirl
Favourite Batman show of all time, and thank you for the video, there is a barely restrained enthusiasm (especially when talking about Kevin Conroy) in your voice that is truly heartwarming to hear :)
This is still the definitive Batman to me. Characters like Clock King and the Ventriloquist can be seen as goofy for sure, but when done right, they're oddly fascinating.
I would love to see you take on Gargoyles. Gargoyles was very dark and very unique at the time, but ABC decided to cancel the series with a cliffhanger that has never resolved during Season 3. The series holds up well and was way ahead of its time.
"Joker's Favor," was the FIRST one that came to mind when you said you might have had an, "odd man out," episode regarding favorite episodes. It's probably one of the best episodes.
Simply Awesome!!! I used to watch this everyday after school at 5pm. I still remember that's how good it was. The best stories and definitely one of the best Jokers!!
@JoBlo Videos *AYE YO! MR. BLO!, can-uh we get a link to the **19:38** score you mentioned? I might be able to dig through that site to find it but don't want to end up with some 3rd party shinanigans or some music you weren't referring to.*
Batman: The Animated Series, is by far one of my all-time favorite animated shows. There are so many classic episodes (they all are classics, really). I definitely enjoyed "Joker's Favor", "Blind As a Bat", "Eternal Youth", "I've Got Batman In My Basement" and "The Underdwellers". Those are episodes that I haven't heard being discussed very much. Very, very proud to own the entire series on DVD. I'm definitely going to binge watch the entire series, including the late 90s episodes, to commemorate the 30th anniversary of BTAS next year... Can't wait!! Awesome review, really enjoyed it! 👍
I really love Batman the Animated Series. I like Kevin Conroy portrayal of Batman, Mark Hamill as the Joker, Jeffrey Combs as Clayface, and Donald Glover as the Riddler. And Harley Quinn, of course
This one my favorite animated series of all time (alongside JLU, Avengers EMH, Last Airbender and Spectacular Spider man) and the best adaptation of Batman ever made. It's dark, the stories are mature but also embraces the fun and fantastic side of the comic books, appealing for both kids as well a older audience. I specially like how Kevin Conry's version of Batman has a much more balanced personality, He is brooding and badass vigilante but also able to show compassion and tries the best to help others, including his enemies. This heroic and compassionate side of Batman is what helps make him so likable and interesting in the Animated series and is something that is missing in most of the live action adaptations.
Batman: The Brave and The Bold was a great show! It had Batman teaming up with Abraham Lincoln to take down a steampunk cyborg John Wilkes Booth. That is a concept I can one hundred percent get behind. I enjoyed this retrospective look at an amazing show. Thanks for a great trip down memory lane!
Dude you talked about the episode but you didn't mention that Harlequin was invented by this TV show... Love in your videos but that's a massive oversight. It was amazing because you think she's always been there but that was the origin of her not from the comic books.
I think the name, "Fries", pronounced as "freeze" for Victor Fries' name is too on-the-nose and goofy regarding the Mr. Freeze persona. I think he should be called Victor Fletcher instead (just keeping the surname starting with "f" alive as it feels suitable, like an homage of sorts).
DOA is great! Classic Film Noir Mystery and Cinematic masterpiece! One can actually watch the ENTIRE DOA FILM while IN-GAME of DEUS EX MANKIND DIVIDED. really cool, i totally watched it all during my last playthrough. In the Dvali theatre near the end of the game, during your last time in prague. you have to watch it all in one sitting though- reloading a save midway through movie will restart the video clip.

I love the episodes you mentioned
Thanks for the heads up on the soundtrack, I didn’t know it existed. Awesome review thanks again.
I love this show. I own a few animation cels from it and the values just keep going up. Not that I want to sell any of them.
NEVER SELL
I loved this show when I was a kid and I watched it all the time. I think that this is definitely the best batman animated tv show. I alway's loved batman and he is still my favorite superhero. Mark Hamill's joker voice is perfect and Kevin Conroy has a great batman voice.
The thought of them continuing the series on HBO Max honestly scares me a little.
Why, would you prefer Netflix?
It shouldn't. Rumor has it, they're all coming back. I just hope it continues the story after the new batman adventures
R.I.P Kevin conroy, the true Dark Knight ❤
I heard Tim Curry’s Joker was too scary.
I will die on the hill that Mask of the Phantasm is, hands down, The best Batman movie.
the best movie score ever.
You and literally everyone else
The BAS music scores are also available on CD from La-La Land Records soundtrack label.
Batman the animated series and Xmen animated series was so ahead of this time with great writing and voice over characters superb-ness!
Jesse had a easy time narrating the script that David wrote because he’s also a fan of the show
Joblo showed the Joker how to be a toker and a midnight smoker.
Batman with Jesse shade narration now that’s a good Wednesday…don’t forget Batman beyond that was also a great show
Thank you for pronouncing Ra's correctly
This is the absolutely best Batman series ever. I just bought the full series box set last month!!🤣
Hat's off to you for remembering Brimstone. It was a great show. I thought I was the only one who remembered it.
Loved the Riddler's first episode. This show was great
Simply Awesome!!! I used to watch this everyday after school at 5pm. I still remember that's how good it was. The best stories and definitely one of the best Jokers!!
@JoBlo Videos
*AYE YO! MR. BLO!, can-uh we get a link to the **19:38** score you mentioned? I might be able to dig through that site to find it but don't want to end up with some 3rd party shinanigans or some music you weren't referring to.*
When I wrote the episode I just assumed it was part of the original show's soundtrack that's sold on amazon. I think there's like two volumes.
What happened? It’s simple. The definitive version of Batman was born.
Now do one on Superman the Animated Series
Love this show. Recently watched the episode Vendetta again, sooo good.
Amazing episode
YES!! I love this show! It's dark, Noir, adult themed, scary, violent, and gritty. The BATMAN Series we still love ego this day.
BTAS will forever be iconic!
Everything was great but no mention of "Heart of Ice". The storyline given to Mr. Freeze is absolutely heart breaking and fantastic.
Great video Jesse! Loved this show as a kid.
Please be aware Jesse is just the narrator not the writer of the episode give credit where credit is due
@@JoBloOriginals My bad. Since the video seemed to be in first person I thought that it was Jesse. My apologies. Great video David Arroyo, well done.
If WB hired the writers from Batman TAS for the live action movies, then those flicks would've been amazing, but alas, WB
This is no lie because Paul Dini wrote the 1st 2 Batman Arkham games & those are highly regarded.
One of the best animated series of all time. I'm currently re-watching them at the moment.
Was the audio recorded in 2011?
I think Mark Hamill just imitated his Trickster character from the old Flash show. And at least the Tim Curry recordings are on youtube now
I'll never forget the first time i saw TAS. I was 10 years old and couldn't believe what i had just watched.
You didn’t mentioned that HQ was a character created for this show not from the comics
Dude you talked about the episode but you didn't mention that Harlequin was invented by this TV show... Love in your videos but that's a massive oversight. It was amazing because you think she's always been there but that was the origin of her not from the comic books.
RIP Arleen Sorkin. 💔
Nice segue from "Have you ever made Batman laugh?" to talking about Mark Hamill voicing the Joker.
I love your narrative! Many thanks once more!
My First Real Introduction too Batman
It might have been mentioned and I missed it, but the character Harley Quinn originated from this series as well.
Jokers favor is my favorite episode of the whole series.
