"Curves, Contours and Body Horns"
This is an edited version (due to copyright claims) of a great TV special released by Granada (ITV) around the time the 40th anniversary Fender Stratocaster was released circa 1994. MK's part is only 1 minute but this is a great docu about a great guitar.

When I watched this in '94 I realised the strat had a middle pickup....Thanks Keith!....Use it all the time now!

One of the most intelligent comments I have heard about guitar players and their skills is either Eric Johnson or Stevie Ray Vaughan I don’t remember who said that saying so an so is a better guitar player is like saying red is better than blue as a colour, no such thing as the best guitar player in the world or ever.
@@Blacksmith1959you can’t be serious, so you are a Zappa fan that’s your thing but even a good guitarist, um no, if he was he would not have needed Steve Vai, and I don’t like him either, technically brilliant but musically lame, Zappa’s guitar playing sounds like some howling dying animal and I am a musician if you like that sound nothing wrong with that.
I recorded this on VHS back in 1994 (15 years old) and watched it so much I wore the tape out. I love this documentary but Dweezil at 40:35 still blows my brain 😎

Ive finally realized, its the Stratocaster for life. I have a 1972 American Stratocaster that sounds incredible and a recently acquired Fender blues Jr. Wow! The blues jr is such a fun amp.
Blues Jr IV with 3-band, reverb, and be sure to get the remote Fat switch!
Leo really was a genius. He along with his team , changed music forever and created the greatest guitar design ever .

The guitar intro defines what the Stratocaster is all about. Pure, melodic, aggressive and beauty. True and unique that all lovers of the fine instrument admire.

All these guys, the ones who are still with us looked so damn young in this film... getting old sucks ass, my friends...sucks it.
It's amazing to think that thing's started off in a tiny place with three girls on the 'assembly line.' These early 50s bolt together Telecasters were conceived as a working musician's instrument, something that now changes hands for between 15/20 thousand dollars; a friend said to me, 'Leo was a big electronics fan. He'd be able to power the neighbourhood's lights now with all the spinning he does in his grave.'

Excellent documentary with loads of good music and quotes. I've been playing guitar for over 20 years now and I can't play anything like these people. They have a tonne of soul and really feel that rootsy kinda music.
This is brilliant and wasn't a Fender PR thing. It was shown on ITV TV as a documentary about the brand. I've got it on video somewhere! I've been trying to find it for years.
The most versatile guitar ever made and to think Leo got in right first time is a mind Blower 🤯

The irony is that if the Knopfler sultans solo is from the 92 tour, then it's not a starts as he played sultans in 92 on a Pensa.
Also worth adding to what Richards said, Strats seem to get more beautiful as they age.

yes...minor pentatonic box position one and two, then mindless minor scale sequencing up and down through the shapes to return back to box position one again...i've taught that shot to the easily impressed for 30 years.
The Stratocaster fits your body when playing on stage. That is important for me. The tones sound natural.
I got a book about this over 15 years ago.it included all these guys words.it was like reading a play

I've got that book. It was going cheap, perhaps for some glaring editorial errors? It's good to catch up with this documentary, but I'm happier with the book.
I would say it is probably one of the most recognized design of guitar known around the world.
I’m surprised Yngwie wasn’t featured on this documentary considering he was one of the first to have a signature Strat in the company, along with the fact that his sound is hugely impacted by the Strat
Yngwie is pure tecnishin, very good tecnishin, but his music from finger to gitah never touch soul, even i try but not happen. Listen to men called marco nofloper, his sound puts me in the heven, his finger scuptere from god.

Eric Clapton was the first artist to have a signature Stratocaster, Yngwie was the second, but same year, 1988.
they way they talk of the revolutionary fender guitar, is how I felt seeing the hammond organ for the first time.

It's so damn sad, that Leo felt he had to sell out to CBS. I have several Fender Guitars, Strats, a Tele and even a P Bass, I also own a 1964 Pre CBS Strat. To me, it is priceless. Most Fender Guitars do, in fact, possess magic. Somehow, it's built in them, like Leo's Soul.
I read that Leo was diagnosed with cancer so decided to sell the company . After CBS bought him out , he was informed that the original diagnosis was in fact wrong , and it was a stomach virus he had , but by that time it was too late .

My Les Paul gave me an achy back once after playing it for a long time on stage :) never changed guitars the whole time :) that guy stuck on me :) loved playing it and still do! but saying that, I was not in the best of health at the time

I build my own guitars now I still love the telecaster the strat is great but I always go back to my telecasters.

I remember watching this documentary when it was first broadcast in Britain back in the early 90's I believe. I expected to see the likes of Clapton, Marvin, Hendrix, Richards etc discussing the Stratocaster. I recall the thrill - which I got again while watching this after 20 something years - of seeing my own personal guitar hero included within this documentary - Nils Lofgren. If you don't know his work, take the time to check him out. There's a reason he's included here.
I was disappointed Stevie Ray Vaughan was not featured more as I believe he was one of the greatest exponents of the Strat.....But a fine video,none the less.

Some of the best bits have been snipped sadly… the Hendrix at Woodstock section changed my life.
The thing about the Strat having enough varied expressions when playing and bringing out the players own feel is the most true thing said about it.
Strats are great, I love 'em and I've played plenty. But a tele is called getting it right first time.

The Stratocaster was literally made because the telecaster didn't balance well and was uncomfortable to a lot of session players.
Was waiting for the lightning fast pentatonic lick after the amazing cleans.......and it was Hank! I thought it was EJ!

Yes. I believe MK was influenced by JJ Cale and also by Chet Atkins. Singing style from Bob Dylan. Everybody gets influences from somebody, and the music evolves.
The first time I heard JJ Cale I thought he was MK. Until he started singing of course.

It's all in the fingers, not the guitar, the guitar is just a tool.
***** I know what you mean, but there have been many guitar players using the ''wrong'' guitar for the job, and because of that created a very unique sound that surprised everyone, so in that sense there is no ''wrong'', especially these days where you can swap out anything.

Gary Moore, Tony Iommi and many others disagree ! :p Like i said, i get what your saying, but if it might ever happen that your forced to use another guitar you'll most likely still sound as you, because the magic happens with your fingers, the guitar only enhances this.

Again, i totally understand what you mean, but we seem to disagree on one specific thing, my opinion is that the fingers mainly dictate someone's sound, and yours is that the guitar does, i understand that different guitars will give different sounds, one is low with a growl, the other high thin sounding, but with any player with their own voice you will still recongnize their sound on different guitars, because of their way of playing, wich is in the fingers.

Alright, it´s not the most important thing in this world. BUT it drives me CRAZY when anyone, and be it Mark Knopfler, tells you Hendrix didn´t actually play with his teeth. Well. ANYONE with a bit of patience can learn how to pluck the strings with their teeth. I, being a gigantic Jimi fan, did it with my first band at 15. And HE didn´t fool his audience. I know the sound.
No. As far as I found out, it´s really easy to pluck with your teeth, and impossible to do it with your tongue.

In response to Aidan Smyth. Check out if you can Nils's album called " Cry Tough" one of his earliest but rough and gritty. I believe it came out in 1976/77 I think you will like it.

A couple things I got from this vidio: 1 Listen to your customer. 2. Don't smash, burn or hang a guitar on a wall to collect dust. Put electricity and your mojo into it. When you pass the next guy/girl will build on your mojo.
Mark was playing Schecter guitars for years, in the Alchemy tour video I think there are no Fender guitars that were used. Am I right?
Telegraph road is played with a Schecter guitar. and i think i am right to say that "once upon a time " is played with a Schecter too.

Funny, a Gibson Les Paul recently sold for 2 million. One that is and was used by several musicians. Not one signed by a few artists and not one sold for "charity" The Gibson I had in mind was used on 3 separate number one songs that topped the UK hit parade...………..

I wouldn't be concerned about the guitar as much as I would be about the amp. If it was to fall in--there could be some issues....grounded or not. GFI protected would be important

Ironic, Hendrix played Keith Richards 1965 Stratocaster when Jimi arrived in London England in 1966. That 1965 Olympic white Stratocaster was gifted to Jimi by Keith Richards girlfriend Linda Keith...Keith Richards only found out later that his white Stratocaster was MIA...Keith and Linda's relationship soured soon there after..

Fender Instrument Co didn't sponsor Hendrix, Fender used Jimi's copyright image to sell there products, but Jimi had to pay full price for all his Stratocasters.Jimi also paid cash for his Marshall Amplifiers, Jim Marshall gave Jimi a small discount in price only.. All Black musicians paid cash up front ...
When Chas convinced Jimi to go to England with him he had to assure him they could get Stratocasters in Britain.

Fender even don't make a Hendrix tribute series guitar.
In other hand they made the Kurt Cobain series, even he not made any notable influence in guitar technic.
Riazor1370 Fender made several Hendrix tribute Stratocasters over the years. Fender also just released a new 2016 model..
it also has alot to do with the specific guitar you get. don't think because you spend 10 -20 gs on a vintage strat that it's gonna be a player. even the new custom shops can end up not being players. advice i got from a wise seasoned player was look for the guitars with wear from being played because you know it was well suited and was loved and if you see a vintage instrument in mint condition often times its in mint condition for a reason.

No, confirmation as far as we know, but the "original" music on the show is credited to the author of the book Ray Minhinnett.

It's one of the live versions of Dire Straits' "Sultan's of Swing". Every live solo is a bit different, but towards the end you can always tell. Check out the version on their live album called 'Alchemy'. Best solo I've ever heard.
