I was born in 1998 in Post-Soviet Ukraine, and my Dad (a self-taught guitarist and a huge fan of MK and Dire Straits who doesn't even speak English) bought a CD player around the same time. From day one I've been listening to Mark's voice, he's my third parent in a way. I'm 23 now, and every single song of his has accompanied my life in a special way. I still have rediscoveries with Mark's discography, every age seems to align with certain moods and sounds. I'm glad to see Mark come up with more and more music and I'm so grateful for it all. He evolves as a songwriter and helps me evolve as a person, too.
Thats awesome! I was lucky my friends father introduced met to dire straits when I was 12, back in 1996. He always said: good music must be played loud. What do you think is Marks top three best songs at the moment? Greetings, Mark from The Netherlands
I've been a Mark Knopfler fan since the first time I heard Dire Straits in my younger days ( I had teenagers in the house)...I'm 81 now and still get the chills listening to anything he does. Don't talk to me when he is 'on'. Fabulous guitarist, most fantastic musical artist. Thank you for this beautiful series.
I love this. Don't talk to me when he is on, alright. I do accept a good home made dinner with loved ones when listening to his music though, be it Dire Staits or his latest albums.
to say someone is THE best guitarist in the world is stupid. Mark is unique and a virtuoso, it's not a competition, he has his own unique style, one of my favorite guitarist today without a doubt, a great guy too. There are many "best guitarists in the world" :) many aren't alive anymore, amoung them the great Jeff Beck who's just left us.....
So cool 😎 l love this Video WOW, great MUSIC 🎶 Thank you for the writing. Thank you, everyone in the band and the Sudio❤❤❤❤❤ 🤘🌬❌️❌️❌️❌️❌️❌️ You make my life a better place to be ❤❤
Mark Knopfler brings out this terribly enormous desire in me of meeting someone and growing old together in a farm in Scotland, surrounded by nature, music, books, warm home gatherings with nice food and lovely people. Basically, warmth, to go with the ups and downs of life. And kindness and authenticity. So, yeah, someone to share this wonderful music with and kind of be embedded in that mood ♥
Agreed, Mark is a Humble Soul, long may he and his bandmates continue. I was born in Scotland 1943 close to where Mark was born was born. I love the way he has matured in a way that he is happy who he is. I have been a follower since Sultan' s of swing.
Jeez , he's a genuis on the guitar playing right handed , yet he's a lefty. Amazing ... that's the old recording studio once owned by The Band and can be seen in the brilliant The Last Waltz movie . Shangri - La , Zuma Beach ...legendary all round .
I drive 300km everyday and Mark is the only one who makes the drive bearable, sometimes I even look forward to sitting behind the wheel and playing Shangri la or one of his other albums
I started listening to Mark's post Dire Straits stuff when I read the lyrics to Telegraph Road. Being from Michigan and having family from Toledo I wondered what would make an extremely talented and successful rocker from the British Isles write a song about a road between Detroit and Toledo? So I dug a little further and marveled at the stories, the history, and yes the unbelievable music that you get with his product. This revelation happened at the same time I started to get weary from another famous rocker who thought we were wanting sermons when we just wanted entertainment and songs....Suffice it to say that streaming and supporting Mark Knopfler is a value proposition and I always feel like I get the better end of the deal. I also find his work "fatigue proof" and every month when Tidal sends me my streaming recap there his mug is right out front. Where I hope it will stay for many years to come!
Re MARKS GUITAR Documentary: Without a doubt the very best Music Artist Documentary ever made. Riveting and Compelling. Mark Knopfler is deserves the Title of Virtuoso. In my 60+years of playing and listening to all music genres, Mark has easily become my number one Guitar / Hero / Arranger / Producer of All Time. His splendid life story is equal to the Man and His myriad of talents and unique skill sets. Thank you Gentlemen for the superb journey back down memory lane, insight and creative inspiration. Truly the Best..!!! Mark YOU ARE THE MAN..!! Thanks..!
I was listening to Our Shangri-La repeatedly for a month, moved by the depth of the power of living in the moment and the brevity of our lives that the song masterfully displays. I think it helped me love my wife a little more than I did before. You have blessed my life in many ways MK. Thank you
I am loving the tributes for him as a person. This is the impression I get from his lyrics, a thoughtful, respectful man. You can't write the words he writes and be a jerk.
Mimi Speike quite agree with you. it is aĺl about the music with Mark. Dire Straits were huge but I always got the impression he was not that interested in being a super star...even tho he was. Some of the melodies he wrote will last forever..this albumn is beautiful.
Isn't it amazing that Mark is actualy a LEFT handed guy in his "civil" life. And he play guitar with right hand. Incredible. THAT can be only natural born genious. Which he definitely is.
J'adore !Un grand merci MARK KNOPFLER ! Je TE SUIS RECONNAISSANT TOUJOURS ET POUR TOUJOURS !TU ES MON MUSICIEN PRÉFÉRÉ DE TOUS LES TEMPS ! Thank you !!!
Mark is the most seriously talented guitarist and songwriter of the last 40 years. As a songwriter myself and guitarist it’s a great mountain you climb as you start out. Of course for me Hendrix, Neil Young and Willie Nelson are the greatest singer/ guitarists ever, in the sense that they can write beautifully yet also express such profound sophistication in the way they just play the guitar. Mark is in the same category, as a great underrated guitar hero who is both literate and thoughtful. He is a master guitarist and songwriter, and gives me so much inspiration.
I've always been enamored with Mark's work with Dire Straits, and there is no doubting whatsoever as to his musical abilities in every sense, but "Shangri-La" is by far my very favorite album of his, hands down. It's so warm and unpressured, yet full of another great and varied story with each successive track. I found it astounding to learn that a SCOTTISH musician had to tell the world in song, the real story behind the McDonald Brothers and Ray Kroc, and how it became one of the truly greatest AMERICAN success stories ever - I find that aspect mind-blowing! This fact is chronicled in the director's comments in the film "The Founder", with Michael Keaton playing the role of Ray Kroc like nobody else could. I just LOVED this documentary in how it took the time to allow us to see just how it was done, the other talented musicians that made it happen, and the remarkable chemistry that made the music come alive and yet flow so damn easily! Special kudos to the gentleman on the keyboards in "Everybody Pays", my very favorite song on the album - his special touch just really helps MAKE that song into one of the greatest of all time, IMHO - sends a shiver up my spine every time. Thanks Mark Knopfler for being you, and for sharing your awesome God-given gift with us all, while we're alive to enjoy it! Peace!
MK you are more than only guitar player You Are good singer very good songwriter you're always give perfectly performer also your group there are also amazing MK you always make my day most of all I like your voice nobody can do what you doe you give me all in your music What I love thank you MK you and your group there are really marvelous keep good healthy everybody👍🎸❤💜🎸💖💟💜🎸💞
I was so lucky to saw Mark on his Shangri-La tour in 2005 (Ljubljana/Tivoli) It was out of this world literally mystical experience ! He is one of greatest guitarist, songwritter, producer, artist ever and for me greatest music inspiration :-)
I have looked for this everywhere! Is this the first time it has ever been shared? Of all MK's albums, Shangri-La was my least favorite. Then the movie about Ray Kroc started getting some attention, and I revisited the album and now I cannot take it off my player. Why did I ever think I didn't like it? Great stuff!
K. MERCI
Thank you for sharing this video. I have been listening to Shangrila almost every day for the last two months and it is such a pleasure in every possible way! My 2 1/2 year old grandson can't get enough of the Song for Sonny Liston..."more Sonny Liston!" We have listened to the song about 100 times now (and I am sure there are a couple hundred more times to come in the not too distant future). He has started to throw out lines from the song now and then. As a consequence I have spent hours thinking about the song and contemplating what makes it so great and I will have to say everything. It is an absolutely perfect song and very compelling story telling.
I love all the Mark Knopfler documentaries. Wonderful viewing. So heart warming to see how all the guys respect him and value playing and recording together with him. All such excellent musicians.

Fabulous documentary! Adds so much background to that fantastic solo album. First fell in love with the title track via the Real Live Roadrunning concert DVD/CD set. Set about working it out on my kid’s Strat. Love to play it, love to hear it. So many GREAT songs on this and all of MK’s albums. What else can be said about his musical genius and appeal that hasn’t already been said?
It is SO Gratifying to hear Many of Mark's Fans Inspirational Feelings we All get from all the Varied Facets of his Music. It is Even More Heartwarming to hear Mark's Thoughts and Philosophy about his Music. He makes US Feel we are his Friend. He is Such a Great Human and Soulful Being because he is Not Only a Musical GIANT and a Sensitive Lyrics Writer, but a Humble GENIUS. His Guitar and Lyrics Really strike a Chord (pardon the Pun) in Everyone's Soul! THANK YOU MARK FOR ENRICHING OUR LIVES WITH YOUR EVOCATIVE MUSIC!
"Going to San Bernardino ring-a-ding-ding." Shangri-La is always my go to album at the end of my listening sessions. Such a beautiful warm tone to this album... Sucker Row, The Trawlerman's Song, Back to Tupelo and the title track are great examples of the subtleties and genius of M.K... great band too. "Get another woman up in the cage... who ain't over the hill". So good. Thank you for posting this video.
